Saturday’s Den: Wrapping up the first Friday of college basketball

— Say you’re a general manager for a major league ballclub ; your team just won the World Series, 4th time in six years they’ve been in the World Series. Your life is good, right?

James Click is 44; he had worked his way up the Tampa Bay Rays’ organization from an intern position, before landing the Houston Astros’ GM job in 2020. His Astros lost the World Series last year, won the World Series this year, but was only offered a 1-year contract going forward.

Click turned down the 1-year offer and is gone from Houston. Technically the sides “parted ways” but the reality is, Houston owner Jim Crane let him walk.

Curious to see where the Astros go from here.

— Gonzaga 64, Michigan State 63
Spartans led by 12 with 16:24 left in game.
Timme had 22 points, 13 rebounds, made only 4-10 on foul line.
Michigan State shot 25% in second half.
Game was played outdoors, on a battleship in San Diego.

— Michigan 88, Eastern Michigan 83
This was a fun game, had a March feel to it.

Eagles led 73-69 with 6:00 left.
Emoni Bates scored 30 points in his EMU debut.

— San Diego State 82, BYU 75
BYU led by 10 early in second half.
Foul shots: BYU 10-16, Aztecs 26-37
San Diego State was +10 in turnovers (20-10)

Visiting Cougars led 50-43 at halftime.
Foul shots: UNC 27-38, Charleston 6-9
Tar Heels shot 30-38 (78.9%) inside the arc.

— Toledo 93, UAB 85
Favored UAB led 46-39 at halftime.
Toledo forced 22 turnovers, shot 58% inside arc.
Rockets were 47-17 last two years, 32-7 in MAC games.

— Wisconsin 60, Stanford 50

Alabama 30, Ole Miss 24
Alabama outscored Ole Miss 13-0 over final 22:00 of game.
Crimson Tide scored TD with 0:08 left in first half, trailed 17-14 at half.
This result puts LSU in SEC Championship game.
Rebels converted 8-16 on third down, were 0-3 on 4th down

LSU 13, Arkansas 10

Commodores snap a 26-game SEC losing streak.
Vandy drove 80 yards, scored game-winning TD with 0:32 left.
Commodores converted 11-17 third down plays.

Pittsburgh 37, Virginia 7
Virginia’s first play: 29-yard pick-6
Virginia’s second play: 39-yard pick-6
0:16 into game, Pitt led 14-0.

Virginia’s third play was a draw play for no gain; the home fans cheered.

West Virginia 23, Oklahoma 20
Mountaineers kicked a 25-yard FG at the gun for the win.
This is West Virginia’s first Big X win over the Sooners.
Oklahoma scored 2 points when West Virginia botched the snap on a PAT.

Huskies are bowl eligible for first time since 2015.
UConn is 8-2 against the spread this year.

— College Football Upsets of the Week:
Arizona (+20) 34, UCLA 28
Boston College (+19) 21, NC State 20
Vanderbilt (+18) 24, Kentucky 21
UConn (+14) 36, Liberty 33
UL-Monroe (+13.5) 31, Georgia State 28
Washington (+13) 37, Oregon 34
West Virginia (+8) 23, Oklahoma 20
TCU (+7) 17, Texas 10
Purdue (+6.5) 31, Illinois 24

Houston 43, Temple 36
Houston threw a 44-yard TD pass with 0:40 left for the win.
Owls’ QB EJ Warner was 42-59/486 passing, with three TD’s.
Houston is 6-4 and is now bowl eligible.

TCU 17, Texas 10:
10-0 TCU was a 7-point underdog to 6-4 Texas. Go figure.
Total yardage was 283-199, TCU
Longhorns converted once in 13 third down plays.

North Carolina 36, Wake Forest 34
Tar Heels kicked 33-yard FG with 2:12 left for the winning points.
Third straight loss for Wake Forest, giving up 48-30-36 points.
North Carolina wins Coastal Division, will play Clemson in ACC title game.

Central Florida 38, Tulane 31
UCF QB Plumlee ran for 176 yards, two TD’s; threw for 132 yards and another TD.
UCF ran ball for 336 yards, converted 10-18 on third down.
Both teams are 8-2, 5-1 in the AAC.

Tennessee 66, Missouri 24— Back in July, Missouri coach Eli Drinkwitz took a shot at Tennessee’s issues with the NCAA; the alleged violations happened under the previous coaching regime. Vols led this game 59-24 in last 3:00; they were running no-huddle offense, throwing the ball (with their 2nd unit), scored a meaningless TD with 0:36 left to rub salt in the wound.

This game was 28-24 with 8:55 left in third quarter; Tennessee dominated from there. Vols gained 724 yards, averaging 7.1 yards/rush, 12.1 yards/pass.

Washington 37, Oregon 34
This game was on FOX so I couldn’t watch it, seeing how DirecTV and Mission Broadcasting are greedy bastards who can’t agree on $$$, so that station is blacked out in Albany.

Washington tied game on 62-yard TD pass with 3:07 left.
Huskies won game with a 43-yard FG with 0:51 left.
Total yardage: 592-522, Oregon. Ducks ran football for 312 yards.

College Basketball Notes:
Wright State 73, Louisville 72— Cardinals are first team since Arkansas State in 1991-92 to start a season 0-2, with two one-point losses.

Alcorn State 66, Wichita State 57— Shockers went 303-84 in Gregg Marshall’s last 11 years coaching there; they fired him after there were multiple allegations of verbal and physical abuse from former players.

Wichita is 32-20 since then, 17-11 in conference games.

Boise State 71, Washington State 61— Good win for the Mountain West Conference.

James Madison 97, Buffalo 62— Dukes scored 106-97 points in winning their first two Division I games- they scored 1.41, 1.09 points/possession in those games.
