TOP 25 REWIND: New No. 1 expected following Kansas' loss

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) Top-ranked Kansas arrived in the desert one of seven undefeated teams left in college basketball.

The Jayhawks left smarting after being stuck in the center of a midcourt Sun Devil mosh pit.

Making the biggest plays down the stretch, No. 18 Arizona State picked up one of the premiere wins in program history, beating Kansas 80-76 Saturday in a game that will shake up the AP Top 25 .

''The reality of it is, we weren't going to run the table, let's not get carried away,'' Kansas coach Bill Self said. ''I hate saying this, you never ever want to lose, but certainly you'd rather learn from a nonconference loss than a conference loss, so hopefully we'll learn something from it and get better from it. I think it's a teaching moment.''

Arizona State had a defining moment.

The Sun Devils knocked off the Jayhawks a year ago in Lawrence, part of an undefeated nonconference schedule that propelled them into the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2014.

Arizona State (9-2) pulled off the biggest possible resume-builder at Wells Fargo Arena, setting off a court-rushing celebration by knocking off a No. 1 team for the second time in program history (Oregon State in 1981) and first time at home.

''That was one of the great sports moments of my life,'' said Arizona State coach Bobby Hurley, a two-time national champion at Duke and former NBA player.

Arizona State surely will vault up the rankings in Monday's poll.

Kansas (10-1) will drop, though how far remains to be seen.

The good news for the Jayhawks: Big man Udoka Azubuike should return soon after missing four games with a sprained ankle.

BLUE DEVILS NO. 1?

With Kansas losing, No. 2 Duke should be poised to move into the No. 1 spot for the second time this season.

The Blue Devils sent the Jayhawks from No. 3 to No. 1 after blowing out Kentucky in their opener but then losing to Gonzaga in the Maui Invitational title game.

Duke (9-1) solidified its case by blowing out Princeton on Tuesday and surviving a big test against previously-undefeated No. 12 Texas Tech on Thursday at Madison Square Garden.

KENTUCKY RISING

Kentucky opened the season with a dismal, 34-point loss to Duke and had an unexpected setback to Seton Hall at Madison Square Garden on Dec. 8.

The 19th-ranked Wildcats appear to be rounding into form now, following a decisive win over Utah with a resume-building victory over No. 9 North Carolina on Sunday.

Behind Keldon Johnson's 16 second-half points, Kentucky held off the Tar Heels 80-72 in Chicago, improving to 9-2 as it heads into Saturday's rivalry game against Louisville.

''We're not the same team we were two weeks ago,'' Kentucky coach John Calipari said. ''It's not even close. And hopefully two weeks from now, we're not gonna be the same team we are today.''

UNDEFEATED NO MORE

No. 14 Buffalo and No. 24 Furman had been among the remaining unbeaten teams heading into the weekend.

They both end it with one loss each and likely will fall in the poll.

Buffalo had no answer for Marquette's Markus Howard on Saturday, watching the 20th-ranked Golden Eagles' high-scoring guard rack up 40 of his 45 points in the second half of their 103-85 blowout win .

Furman moved into the rankings for the first time three weeks ago and kept winning to stay there. The Paladins could find themselves on the outside looking on Monday after losing by 20 to LSU .

No. 4 Michigan (12-0), No. 5 Virginia (11-0), No. 6 Nevada (12-0), No. 21 Houston (11-0) and St. John's (12-0) are the only undefeated teams remaining in Division I.

VOLS VAULTING

No. 3 Tennessee has its highest ranking since hitting No. 1 in 2007-08. With Kansas' loss and their lopsided win over Wake Forest this week, look for the Vols to possibly move up to No. 2 on Monday.

WATCH LIST

With Furman and No. 25 Syracuse losing, look for Oklahoma to possibly move into the Top 25.

The Sooners (11-1) just missed being ranked last week and stretched their winning streak to seven games with victories over Creighton and Northwestern.

Kansas State (9-2) also might sneak back into the poll after beating Southern Miss and Vanderbilt this week.

13) Maybe the biggest downside of fantasy football being so popular is when guys don?t do so well at this time of year, they sometimes take a decent amount of grief from people who have them on their fantasy teams.

I have a fantasy baseball team and must admit that I take it pretty seriously, but I know enough to take it in stride when things don?t go my way. Fantasy football can be pretty random, as far as who gets targeted in the red zone, etc, take defeats in stride, please?!?!?!

12) Former NFL player/GM Matt Millen had a heart transplant over the weekend; the surgery was said to go well. Pretty amazing stuff medical people can do. Hope Mr Millen is back feeling well soon.

11) Tennessee Titans signed QB Austin Davis as insurance, with Marcus Mariota banged up and Matt Cassel his backup. Titans play Indianapolis for a playoff spot Sunday night.

Duke rises to No. 1 in AP poll again

Duke moved to No. 1 after blowing out Kentucky in its season opener, only to lose the top spot two weeks later with a loss to Gonzaga in Maui.

Well, the Blue Devils are back at No. 1.

Buoyed by a win over No. 12 Texas Tech and Kansas' loss at No. 18 Arizona State, Duke moved atop The Associated Press Top 25 released on Monday, receiving 35 of 64 first-place votes.

No. 2 Michigan received nine first-place votes, No. 3 Tennessee got 12, and No. 4 Virginia and No. 5 Kansas received four each.

No. 6 Nevada, Gonzaga, Michigan State, Florida State and Virginia Tech rounded out the top 10.

Duke (11-1) started the season No. 4 in the preseason poll, but moved to No. 1 for a record-tying 135th week in the first regular-season poll after turning its opener against then-No. 2 Kentucky into a laugher.

The Blue Devils stayed in the top spot until a rally against Gonzaga in the Maui Invitational title game came up short. Duke worked its way up to No. 2 and slid into the top spot after routing Princeton and holding off No. 12 Texas Tech last week.

The 69-58 win over the previously-unbeaten Red Raiders had a March-like feel at Madison Square Garden as two Elite Eight teams from a year ago played for the first time.

''This is a great night for college basketball,'' Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said.

WOLVERINES RISING

Michigan's follow-up to its national title-game run a year ago keeps chugging along.

Following a 21-point win over Air Force in their only game last week, the Wolverines (12-0) moved up two spots in this week's poll, passing Tennessee.

Michigan has its highest ranking since hitting No. 1 during the 2012-13 season and still has that stifling defense, allowing 55.8 points per game, good for third nationally.

VOLS JUST SHORT

Tennessee won in two blowouts last week and added 10 more first-place votes than the week before.

It wasn't good enough to keep the Vols ahead of undefeated Michigan.

Tennessee, which lost to Kansas on Nov. 23, finished a single point behind the Wolverines in the overall voting, 1,472 to 1,471.

BUZZING HOKIES

Virginia Tech entered the 2018-19 season with high expectations. The Hokies are living up to those so far under coach Buzz Williams.

Virginia Tech moved into the top 10 for the first time since 1995-96 after beating North Carolina A&T in its only game last week.

The Hokies have one blemish on their record, by one at Penn State, and have a win over then-ranked Purdue on their resume.

SUN DEVILS (BARELY) RISING

No. 17 Arizona State picked up one of the biggest wins in program history by knocking off top-ranked Kansas 80-76.

The Sun Devils (9-2) picked up only one spot in this week's poll, thanks to a road loss to Vanderbilt the previous Sunday.

The Jayhawks dropped four spots to No. 5, but should get big man Udoka Azubuike back soon after he missed four games with a sprained ankle.

RISING AND FALLING

No teams made significant jumps in this week's poll. No. 10 Virginia Tech and No. 16 Kentucky were the biggest movers, adding three spots each.

No. 21 Buffalo had the biggest drop, losing seven places after losing to No. 18 Marquette. No. 12 Auburn and No. 14 North Carolina lost five spots each.

Furman's first run at being ranked came to an end this week after the Paladins lost by 20 to LSU.

Nebraska dropped out of the poll from No. 25 despite winning its only game last week.

IN AND OUT

No. 20 North Carolina State (11-1) moved into the poll for the first time since 2013 after knocking off then-No. 7 Auburn on Wednesday and South Carolina Upstate on Saturday.

No. 25 Oklahoma is ranked for the first time since hitting No. 4 in last year's poll.

TCU wins Diamond Head Classic, 83-69 over Indiana State

HONOLULU (AP) Alex Robinson had 15 points, eight rebounds and four assists and TCU withstood a late rally to beat Indiana State 83-69 on Tuesday night in the championship game of the Diamond Head Classic.

TCU led 40-30 at halftime behind a balanced scoring attack as nine of the 10 Frogs who played scored. TCU had its first double-digit lead with 3:23 left in the first half and Indiana State wasn't able to get closer than eight points the rest of the game.

TCU was ahead by 22 points with 9:38 remaining but didn't make another field goal for nearly six minutes as Indiana State went on an 11-0 run to pull to 71-60. But Robinson scored six points during an 8-0 run to seal it.

JD Miller had 12 points, 11 rebounds and four assists for TCU (11-1), which won its eighth straight. The Frogs will stay in Hawaii to face Hawaii Pacific on Friday.

Jordan Barnes, averaging 21.5 points per game, had 14 points, six rebounds and four assists for Indiana State (8-4). Tyreke Key also scored 14 points. The Sycamores were just 8 of 16 at the free-throw line.

Bucknell secures 3rd place at Hawaii's Diamond Head Classic

HONOLULU (AP) Jimmy Sotos had 14 points, five rebounds and a tournament-record 12 assists to pace five Bucknell starters in double-figure scoring, and the Bison beat UNLV 97-72 on Tuesday to claim third place at the Diamond Head Classic.

Bucknell led 47-30 at halftime behind freshman Andrew Funk's three 3-pointers and 11 points. Bucknell was 8 of 13 from distance in the half and shot 55 percent overall. UNLV was just 1 of 11 from 3-point range in the half. Freshman Joel Ntambwe had 10 points, on 3-of-10 shooting, and six rebounds for UNLV.

Nate Sestina scored Bucknell's first eight points of the second half and Avi Toomer drilled a 3-pointer from the top of the key for a 58-36 lead.

Kimbal Mackenzie added 16 points and Sestina had 14 for Bucknell (6-6). Bruce Moore, Toomer and Funk each scored 11.

Ntambwe had 13 points and seven rebounds for UNLV (6-6). Amauri Hardy added 12 points. UNLV, one of the nation's top offensive rebounding teams, had 26 second-chance points.

Hawaii beats URI 68-60, takes 5th

HONOLULU (AP) Zigmars Raimo scored 19 points, Drew Buggs had 12 points and eight rebounds and Hawaii beat Rhode Island 68-60 on Tuesday for fifth place at the Diamond Head Classic.

Brocke Stepteau dribbled around a double team at the top of the key, drove the lane and finished in traffic for a 62-58 lead with 54.6 seconds left. URI was off on a 3-pointer and Eddie Stansberry extended Hawaii's lead to six points at the free-throw line.

Stepteau and Stansberry each finished with 11 points for Hawaii (8-5). Jack Purchase hit a 3-pointer just before the halftime buzzer to give Hawaii a 34-32 lead.

Jeff Dowtin led the Rams (6-5) with 17 points. Cyril Langevine added 11 points with 14 rebounds and Fatts Russell had 10 points and seven assists.

The teams combined to go 11 for 45 from distance in a game with 17 lead changes.

Colorado finishes 7th at Diamond Head

HONOLULU (AP) Lucas Siewert scored 17 points, freshman Daylen Kountz added 12 and Colorado beat Charlotte 68-53 on Tuesday in the seventh-place game of the Diamond Head Classic.

Colorado trailed by eight points with 5:20 remaining in the first half, but closed on a 19-2 run - with nine points from Namon Wright - for a 35-26 lead. Both teams were 11-of-23 shooting in the first half but Colorado attempted 10 more free throws. Charlotte was held to just six points in the first six minutes of the second half as Colorado pulled away with a 49-32 lead.

Wright finished with 10 points for Colorado (9-3), which snapped a two-game losing streak. The Buffaloes start Pac-12 play next week at Arizona.

Jon Davis scored 25 points for Charlotte (3-8). With nine points in the first half, Davis moved past Leemire Goldwire for ninth on Charlotte's career scoring list. Milos Supica added 11 points for the 49ers, who have lost six of their last seven.

Ahmed Hill, No. 10 Virginia Tech blow out Md.-Eastern Shore

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) Zach Norvell Jr. scored 20 points and No. 7 Gonzaga started with a 29-1 run against North Alabama in a 96-51 victory on Friday night, the Bulldogs' 13th straight win at home.

Brandon Clarke had 16 points, 12 rebounds, four blocks and three steals for Gonzaga (12-2), which was ranked No. 1 for two weeks earlier this season. Rui Hachimura added 14 points, Josh Perkins scored 13 and Corey Kispert had 10.

Christian Agnew scored 18 for North Alabama (3-11), which is in its first year of Division I basketball and is still seeking its first win over a D-I opponent.

The Zags went ahead 29-1 in the first seven minutes, making nine of their first 12 shots. North Alabama did not make a field goal until nearly eight minutes were gone in the first, when Agnew scored.

NO. 10 VIRGINIA TECH 85, MARYLAND-EASTERN SHORE 40

BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) - Ahmed Hill scored 20 points and Virginia Tech shot nearly 66 percent as it drubbed Maryland-Eastern Shore for the Hokies' sixth consecutive victory.

Kerry Blackshear Jr. added 15 points and Wabissa Bede scored 14 for the Hokies (11-1), who continued their best start to a season in 100 years.

The Hawks (1-13) were led by Dontae Caldwell with 10 points as they lost their eighth in a row and 30th consecutive game on the road.

The Hokies played without scoring leader Nickeil Alexander-Walker (18.5 points per game) because of a sprained right ankle.

NO. 11 TEXAS TECH 71, TEXAS-RIO GRANDE VALLEY 46

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) - Jarrett Culver scored 19 points, first-time starter Deshawn Coprew had 13 points and 10 rebounds and Texas Tech pulled away from Texas-Rio Grande Valley in the Red Raiders' final tuneup before Big 12 Conference play.

Culver and the Red Raiders (11-1) cranked up their signature defense in the second half, turning a close game into a rout with 12 minutes to go as Texas Tech bounced back from its first loss of the season, 69-58 to top-ranked Duke in New York eight days earlier.

Terry Winn led the Vaqueros (8-7) with 17 points.

NO. 18 MARQUETTE 84, SOUTHERN 41

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Markus Howard scored 23 of his 26 points in a hot-shooting first half, and No. 18 Marquette overpowered Southern.

Howard was 8 for 8 from the field in the opening half, including 5 of 5 from the 3-point arc. The Golden Eagles (11-2) won their eighth straight game, their longest streak since 2015-16.

Sidney Umude had 10 points for Southern (1-12), which was held to 26 percent shooting (14 of 54).

NO. 20 NORTH CAROLINA STATE 97, LOYOLA-MARYLAND 64

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Torin Dorn scored 17 points and North Carolina State wrapped up its nonconference schedule by beating Loyola-Maryland.

Freshman Jericole Hellems matched his season high with 16 points for the Wolfpack (12-1) in the team's first game with an AP Top 25 ranking in nearly six years. N.C. State shot 63 percent and used a 13-0 run spanning halftime to stretch out the lead.

Andrew Kostecka scored 27 points for the Greyhounds (4-9), who closed a five-game road swing with a third straight loss by at least 18 points.
