Arizona beat three stiffs (schedule #342) to open its season; Wildcats are #221 experience team that won all three of its games by 21+ points, but this is big step up in competition. Arizona is starting two seniors and a junior transfer. Iowa State is off to a 3-0 start with a 76-59 win over Missouri; Cyclones are #274 experience team (#326 in MC); they start two frosh, two seniors- their bench hasn?t played much, which could be problem here, playing three games in three days. Big X teams are 1-6 vs spread away from home; Pac-12 teams are 4-5.

Gonzaga is 3-0, beating two stiffs and Texas A&M by 23; Zags are #159 experience team that better not look ahead to Arizona/Duke next two days. Gonzaga is missing a starter with an injury; they?re starting two sophs, two juniors. Illinois lost its last game when its PG (7 assists in first game) got a concussion during a gameday walk-thru; I?m assuming he plays here. Illini is #310 experience team, starting two forth and a soph. WCC favorites are 5-0 vs spread away from home; Big 14 underdogs are 4-1.

Gonzaga vs. Illinois
Kyle Markus

The Gonzaga Bulldogs don?t get a bunch of competition during their conference season, so they always make sure to load up the non-conference slate with major conference foes. The third-ranked Bulldogs are playing in the Maui Invitational and will face off against the Illinois Fighting Illini this week.

Gonzaga has long proven to be much better than its mid-major status and will be the heavy favorite to pick up this victory. Illinois would love to pull the upset as it aims to push for an NCAA Tournament bid this season.

The Bulldogs are good enough to make a deep run in March Madness this season and will aim to begin building their resume with some impressive non-conference wins. This would be one of the first in college basketball wagering.

This NCAA basketball game between the Gonzaga Bulldogs and Illinois Fighting Illini will be held at the Lahaina Civic Center in Maui, Hawaii at 11:30 p.m ET on Monday, November 19th, 2018. The game will be nationally televised on ESPN2.

Odds Analysis

Gonzaga has started the season with a perfect 3-0 record, winning each game by at least 23 points. The Bulldogs began the year with a pair of easy victories and then picked up a quality one last time out with a blowout of Texas A&M.

Illinois is 1-1 on the season with a victory over Evansville and an 88-80 loss last time out to Georgetown. Gonzaga should be a double-digit favorite based on its talent level. The scoring total should be really high as the Bulldogs and Fighting Illini have shown the ability to fill it up early in the season in NCAA basketball wagering.

Key Stat

215.5. That?s the total number of points these two teams are averaging in the earlygoing. Gonzaga is putting up a sensational 106 points per game, which includes a season-best 120 points in its opener against Idaho State. The Bulldogs are shooting 53.4 percent from the field as a team and 32.9 percent from three-point range. Gonzaga has impressive depth as seven players are averaging at least nine points per game thus far.

Illinois isn?t quite as impressive but is still averaging 89.5 points per contest as it scored 99 against Evansville. The Fighting Illini is shooting 51.3 percent from the field and will need to be efficient in order to remain close in this one.

Player To Watch

Rui Hachimura -- Gonzaga?s leading scorer averaged in double digits a year ago but has taken a big leap forward after the Bulldogs lost some key players following last year?s impressive campaign. Hachimura is averaging 22.7 points and 5.7 rebounds per contest. He is shooting 64.3 percent from the field and Illinois will have to work hard to keep Hachimura from taking over this game.

Gonzaga has had some big-time players come through the program in recent years, many of whom have gone on to success in the NBA. Hachimura would love to follow that path and star for the Bulldogs before moving on to the professional level.

Duke rolls over San Diego State 90-64 in Maui Invitational
November 20, 2018
By The Associated Press

LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) R.J. Barrett scored 20 points, Cam Reddish added 16 and top-ranked Duke remained undefeated at the Maui Invitational with a 90-64 rout over San Diego State.

The Blue Devils (4-0) shot 52 percent, made 10 of 25 from 3-point range and improved to 16-0 in Maui while earning a spot in Tuesday's semifinals against No. 8 Auburn.

Duke has been the talk of college basketball since its highly-touted freshmen shot the season out of a canon with a blowout win over then-No. 2 Kentucky. The five-time Maui champion Blue Devils arrived in paradise the favorites and played like it against the Aztecs (2-1).

Despite front-court foul trouble in the first half - Zion Williamson played seven minutes - Duke took control with an 11-0 run and led 49-32 by halftime behind Barrett's 16 points.

The Blue Devils kept the runaway going with an early 8-0 run in the second half, building the lead to 71-46 on Williamson's breakaway windmill dunk. Williamson had 13 points in 18 minutes.

Devin Watson had 15 points to lead San Diego State (2-1).

No. 6 NEVADA 90, CALIFORNIA BAPTIST 55

RENO, Nev. (AP) - Trey Porter had 14 points and nine rebounds, Jordan Brown scored 16 and Nevada beat California Baptist.

Nevada outrebounded the Lancers 47-31 and outscored them 40-24 in the paint.

Six players scored in double figures for the Wolf Pack (4-0). Caleb Martin had 14 points, Jazz Johnson added 11, Jordan Caroline 10 and Tre'Shawn Thurman 10.

Milan Acquaah, a Washington State transfer who started nine games for the Cougars last season, had 12 points for Cal Baptist. Jordan Heading also scored 12.

Cal Baptist (2-2) grabbed a 14-11 lead with 11:34 left in the first half, but Nevada answered with a 31-10 run to enter the break up 42-24.

No. 7 NORTH CAROLINA 101, SAINT FRANCIS (PA) 76

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - Cameron Johnson scored 20 points, freshman Nassir Little added 19 and North Carolina beat Saint Francis of Pennsylvania in the on-campus round of the Las Vegas Invitational.

Luke Maye had 11 points and 10 rebounds, Kenny Williams had a career-high nine assists and freshman Coby White finished with 16 points for the Tar Heels (5-0), who shot 52 percent and never trailed.

North Carolina fought through some early turnover trouble and finally pulled away from the pesky Red Flash (1-3) before reaching triple figures for the third time in four games.

Jamaal King had 21 points, Andre Wolford scored 18 and Keith Braxton added 14 to lead the Red Flash, who shot 34 percent yet early in the second half were within striking distance of their first Top 25 victory since 1959.

No. 8 AUBURN 88, Xavier 79, OT

LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) - Bryce Brown scored 26 points, Jared Harper added 25 and Auburn outlasted Xavier to open the Maui Invitational.

The Tigers (4-0) shot poorly from the perimeter early and had a hard time shaking the new-look Musketeers (2-2), missing badly on a shot to win it in regulation.

Auburn took control in the overtime behind its defense, outscoring Xavier 11-2. The Tigers scored 31 points off Xavier's 22 turnovers overall to earn a spot in the semifinals against the Duke-San Diego State winner.

Ryan Welage had 17 points and Paul Scruggs 16 for the Musketeers.

Auburn had a five-point lead with a minute left in regulation, but Naj Marshall made a 3-pointer from the wing to pull the Musketeers within 77-75.

Xavier tied it at 77-all with 26 seconds left in regulation on Tyrique Jones' two free throws and Brown's last-second shot came up well short.

No. 12 KANSAS STATE 82, MISSOURI 67

ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands (AP) - Dean Wade scored 21 points, and Kansas State defeated Missouri in the championship game of the Paradise Jam tournament.

Barry Brown Jr. added 19 points and six assists, Xavier Sneed had 13 points and Kamau Stokes scored 10 for the Wildcats (5-0), who won their first in-season tournament title in four tries under head coach Bruce Weber.

Jordan Geist had 24 points, Xavier Pinson added 12 and Mark Smith 11 for the Tigers (3-2).

No. 14 FLORIDA STATE 93, CANISIUS 61

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Mfiondu Kabengele scored a career-high 18 points and Terance Mann added 12 as Florida State warmed up after a seven-day layoff to beat Canisius.

Kabengele, the nephew of former NBA All-Star center Dikembe Mutombo, came off the bench to shoot 6 of 12 from the floor and had six rebounds for the Seminoles. Florida State is 3-0 for a third straight season.

Malik Johnson scored 20 points for Canisius (1-1), which had 13 first-half turnovers and finished the night with 18.

ARIZONA STATE 72, No. 15 MISSISSIPPI STATE 67

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Kimani Lawrence scored 22 points to lead Arizona State to a victory over Mississippi State in the heavyweight bracket of the MGM Main Event.

Arizona State, which climbed as high as No. 3 after opening last season 12-0, improved to 4-0, while handing the Bulldogs their first loss of the season (3-1).

The Sun Devils held off a second-half rally by Mississippi State, which tied the game at 65 when Nick Weatherspoon drained a long-range jumper just inside the 3-point line with one minute left in the game.

But Lawrence answered with a 3-pointer with 33 seconds left, and the Sun Devils held on for the win.

Luguentz Dort added 17 points and nine rebounds, while Remy Martin scored 16 for the Sun Devils.

The Bulldogs were led by Aric Holman, who had 22 points and 10 rebounds.

No. 16 CLEMSON 72, AKRON 69

GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands (AP) - Shelton Mitchell scored 22 points with four steals, Elijah Thomas had 15 points and 12 rebounds and Clemson beat Akron in the first game of the Cayman Islands Classic.

Marcquise Reed added 16 points for Clemson (4-0), which returns four starters from last season's Sweet 16 game. Sophomore Aamir Simms added 12 points to reach double figures for the fourth straight game after doing it just three times last season. Mitchell was 9 of 13 from the free-throw line compared to Akron's 15 attempts, and Thomas secured his 12th career double-double with 4:08 to play.

Mitchell had 10 points in the first half as Clemson led for 18 of the 20 minutes. He made two free throws with 40 seconds left for a 70-59 lead, and Akron's Daniel Utomi capped it with a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Loren Cristian Jackson made five 3-pointers and scored 25 points for Akron (3-1).

No. 17 UCLA 80, PRESBYTERIAN 65

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Jaylen Hands scored 19 points and Jalen Hill had a career-high 20 rebounds to lead UCLA to a win over Presbyterian College.

The Bruins (4-0) did what they were expected to do in dispatching the Blue Hose (3-3) and while they ran out to a big lead at halftime, they survived a scare in the second half.

Presbyterian College outscored UCLA 39-20 over the first 12:20 of the second half to cut UCLA's lead to 61-58. That was as close as Presbyterian would get as UCLA answered with a 12-2 run to put the game away.

Adam Flagler led Presbyterian College with a game-high 29 points.

No. 3 Gonzaga 84. Illinois 78

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but??.

13) I hope this isn?t offensive but it made me laugh???

?An Albuquerque woman is suing Samsung for $1.8M after she necessitated medical attention after inserting her cellphone inside her vagina and was unable to retrieve it for 96 hours.?

The 39-year old woman claims her medical bills at University of New Mexico?s Hospital amount to $1,168,000 and that she has suffered from severe psychological distress because of the whole ordeal. She said she first inserted the cell phone inside her vagina as a dare from one of her friends, but quickly realized that the phone would not come out.

Moving right along???

12) Did you know that over the last six basketball seasons, Kentucky is just 2-10-1 vs the spread as a road underdog in conference games?

11) Colorado fired football coach Mike MacIntyre, who had a 30-44 record in six seasons. Buffs started this season 5-0, but an injury-depleted team lost its last six games. MacIntyre will not coach Colorado in its last regular season game, against Cal.

10) Kansas? new football coach Les Miles gets a 5-year contract that will pay him $2,775,000 a year, with longevity bonuses 2020 and 2022. Its good to be friends with the AD.

Miles gives a great press conference; he probably has been our Quote of the Day on this site as much as anyone, except maybe Steve Kerr.

9) We?ve talked before this season about Washington State QB Gardner Minshew, who has led the Coogs to a 10-1 record, throwing for 29 TDs and 3,852 yards.

My question is this: How on God?s green earth was Minshew not the full-time starter last year at East Carolina? He split time with a Duke transfer named Thomas Sirk. Coaching matters.

8) San Diego State football coach Rocky Long played DB in the old World Football League, playing for the Detroit Wheels in 1974. Great name for a team. WFL used a yellow football so it would show up better on TV. Pretty sure Pat Haden played in that league too ,maybe for the South California Sun.

7) Friday night, Utah Jazz lost 113-107; the team?s star Donovan Mitchell took 35 shots and had zero assists, which usually infers that the player is selfish, which Mitchell isn?t.

Mitchell was 12-24 on 2-point shots, 1-11 outside the arc; you can pass the ball and not get an assist because your teammates miss shots, but 35 shots and zero assists is very unusual.

Saturday night in their win at Boston, Mitchell took 21 shots and had six assists.

6) QB?s the Redskins are working out this week to be a backup to new starter Colt McCoy; Mark Sanchez, EJ Manuel, Josh Johnson, TJ Yates and Kellen Clemens.

How does every NFL team not keep three QB?s on their roster? What would?ve happened if McCoy had gotten hurt during the Houston game? Who would play QB then? Redskins don?t have a quarterback on their practice squad.

5) Carolina QB Cam Newton threw an 82-yard pass to DJ Moore early in the third quarter in Detroit Sunday; it was the longest NFL reception in three years that didn?t wind up as a TD. Panthers kicked a FG on that drive; the 4-point difference was important in a 20-19 game.

4) Los Angeles Rams? business offices are pretty close to where the wildfires have been burning; the offices will be closed for a couple more weeks. Lot of team employees have been working from their homes during this difficult time in southern California.

3) Singer Dolly Parton has donated over 100 million books to children; in a world that is going crazier by the day, thought I?d point out some good news, too.

2) Sacramento Kings are 8-8 and much-improved this season, but there are rumors that the team?s powers-that-be are unhappy about the playing time their younger players are getting, and as a result, coach Dave Joerger?s job is in jeopardy. The front office wants the young players to play more; the coach wants to win now, so he can stay employed. Go figure.

You wonder why some teams always, always lose???

1) Speaking of which, I wake up Sunday morning and one of first things I read is that the Browns are thinking about interviewing former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice to be their new head coach. Seriously.

Preview: Wildcats (4-0) at Bulldogs (4-0)
Date: November 20, 2018 10:30 PM EDT

For much of the past two decades, Gonzaga and Arizona have battled for the unofficial title of Best Team on the West Coast.

They'll renew their rivalry on Tuesday in the middle of the Pacific in the semifinals of the Maui Invitational.

The Wildcats have won five of the teams' eight meetings since 2000, while the Zags won the most recent match-up, 69-62 in 2015.

But the most memorable game in the series occurred in the second round of the 2003 NCAA Tournament when Arizona outlasted the Bulldogs 96-95 in a double-overtime classic.

In Maui on Monday, the No. 3 Zags (4-0) got a scare from Illinois in the late going before prevailing 84-78, while the Wildcats (4-0) trailed Iowa State by 10 with 11 minutes remaining before going on a 12-2 run to tie the game at 56 with 5:11 left. Arizona knocked off the Cyclones 71-66.

Arizona's defense was a key to the comeback. The Cyclones shot 34.5 percent in the second half after leading 36-27 at the break.

"I'm just proud of our guys. I feel like today just showed how we loved each other as brothers," senior guard Justin Coleman said, according to the Arizona Daily Star. "It just shows the connection we have as a team because we got out-rebounded, we got down 10, but it showed the effort and the togetherness we had through adversity to get back and win the game."

Coleman had a season-high 18 points on 7-for-13 shooting to lead the Wildcats.

After three easy home wins to start the season, Arizona coach Sean Miller wasn't sure what kind of team he had.

Last November, the Wildcats lost all three of their games at the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament, and he didn't want to see a repeat of that performance.

"You come to this tournament, you don't want to be the team that is 0-3 when they leave Maui," Miller said. "Every win here is a very hard one to get."

In the Maui nightcap, the Zags got off to a slow start for the second straight game.

In Thursday's 94-71 win over Texas A&M, Gonzaga found itself tied at 28 late in the first half before overwhelming the Aggies, outscoring them 62-28 over the next 22 minutes.

Against the Illini, Gonzaga took a seven-point lead into the break after a close first half and pushed its advantage to double digits for much of the second half before the Fighting Illini cut the lead to two on three separate occasions in the final five minutes.

The Zags committed 22 turnovers in the win.

"(The) 22 turnovers are definitely the most we've committed this year," forward Jeremy Jones said. "That's definitely something we need to clean up (against Arizona)."

Jones, a senior who hasn't played many minutes during his Gonzaga career, had career highs of 14 points and 11 rebounds and made two late free throws to put the game away.

"Jeremy was fantastic," Gonzaga coach Mark Few said. "That's the kind of story you root for as a coach. I couldn't be happier for Jeremy."

Preview: Tigers (4-0) at Blue Devils (4-0)
Date: November 20, 2018 8:00 PM EDT

Usually when heavyweights collide in Hawaii, it's a pair of Sumo wrestlers squaring off in a circular ring.

On Tuesday night, a more traditional mainland heavyweight collision is on tap when No. 1 Duke and No. 8 Auburn meet in a semifinal game of the Maui Jim Maui Invitational.

The Blue Devils (4-0) easily dispatched San Diego State on Monday, cruising to a 90-64 victory against the Aztecs at the Lahaina Civic Center.

Earlier in the day, the Tigers kicked off the tournament with a thrilling 88-79 overtime victory over Xavier.

Auburn (4-0) likes to push the tempo and shoot the 3. Against the Musketeers, Bruce Pearl's squad connected on 11 of 35 shots beyond the arc. The Tigers recorded 10 steals and forced 22 turnovers.

Coincidentally, Duke, which is 16-0 at Maui, also prefers an up-tempo pace, but as the Blue Devils showed against the Aztecs, they're pretty good at playing at a methodical pace as well.

San Diego State clogged the middle and forced Duke to beat them from outside, and the Blue Devils happily obliged, draining 10 of 25 3-point attempts.

"As long as our guys were ready to shoot, they were ready to shoot and they knocked them down," Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski said. "I thought that was the differential in the first half."

Neither team found much rhythm in the first half, yet Duke led by 17 at intermission. They stretched the lead to 35, which allowed Krzyzewski to rest his starters.

Pearl didn't have that luxury as the Tigers wasted a five-point lead with a minute to go and ended up in overtime. Yet playing a close game might be an advantage for Auburn should the Tigers be able to keep it close against Duke.

Auburn boasts one of the best guard tandems Duke will see with Jared Harper and Bryce Brown. They combined for 51 points against Xavier.

The Tigers are confident and are ready for the challenge.

"I feel like we're more ready than anybody, to be honest," Brown said. "We have an extremely deep team. With our guards and our bigs, we have a lot of depth. Or depth, we are more prepared than anybody," he added.

Krzyzewski is well aware of what the Tigers are capable of doing. They shoot the 3 well (10-for-27 against Xavier) and when they get to the free-throw line the Tigers don't miss (21 of 24 on Monday).

"They have more veterans, but Maui puts you in unusual situations. I think overall those situations, if you handle them well get you better. If you don't handle them well, you lose. But you learn why you can lose," Krzyzewski said. "So we get to see how our young guys do in that situation against a Top-10 team, a very well coached team."

The Auburn defense will have its hands full against freshman Zion Williamson, Cam Reddish and R.J. Barret, who combined for 49 points against the Aztecs.

But Duke has plenty of depth as well with Tre Jones, Jack White, Javin DeLaurier and 7-foot center Antonio Vrankovic.

Still, the diminutive Harper isn't rattled by the prospects of facing what's been called one of the best assembled college teams of all time.

"If we can defend and rebound, we can play with anyone," he said. "Rebounding will be a focus for us."

Loaded Maui Invitational underway
November 19, 2018
By The Associated Press

LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) Zion Williamson poked the ball free with a clear path to the basket, the crowd rising in anticipation before he even reached midcourt.

The voices in the Lahaina Civic Center rising with Duke's rim-wrecking freshman, Williamson launched through the air, head well above the rim as he threw down a windmill dunk and roars echoed off their ceiling.

Duke's soaring-and-scoring show hit paradise and it's showing no sign of slowing down.

The top-ranked Blue Devils breezed through their Maui Invitational opener on Monday, blowing out San Diego State 90-64 to remain undefeated on the Valley Isle.

''They understand being part of something bigger than them, but still being really good,'' Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said. ''The spotlight is bigger, their stuff will show if the spotlight's on the whole team.''

Duke has been the talk of college basketball since its highly-touted freshmen shot the season out of a canon with a blowout win over then-No. 2 Kentucky. The five-time Maui champion Blue Devils arrived in paradise the favorites and played like it against the Aztecs (2-1).

Duke (4-0) built a 17-point halftime lead despite front-court foul trouble - Williamson played seven first-half minutes - and shot 52 percent, making 10 of 25 from the 3-point arc.

The position-less Blue Devils kept the crowd wondering what would happen next with a series of acrobatic moves and finishes at the rim, pushing the lead and themselves into Tuesday's semifinals against No. 8 Auburn. Duke is 16-0 all-time in Maui.

''They're good players, it is plain and simple,'' said San Diego State's Jeremy Hemsley, who finished with 12 points. ''They know how to play the game of basketball, they play it at a high level.

Devin Watson had 15 points to lead San Diego State (2-1), which plays Xavier in the second round.

---

NO. 8 AUBURN 88, XAVIER 77

Auburn had a hard time shaking Xavier. Behind their star guards and a stingy defense in overtime, the eight-ranked Tigers are moving on in Maui.

Bryce Brown scored 26 points, Jared Harper added 25 and No. 8 Auburn shut down Xavier in overtime for an 88-79 victory.

''They're terrific back court players, you can see the difference that experience makes,'' Auburn coach Bruce Pearl said. ''You just can't be afraid to fail. You just got to go out there and put it on the line. I thought these guys both did that, they both competed and the difference obviously was their outstanding play.''

The Tigers (4-0) shot poorly from the perimeter early - 3 for 15 from 3-point range and had a hard time shaking the new-look Musketeers (2-2). The Tigers missed missing badly on a shot to win it in regulation, but outscored Xavier 11-2 in overtime.

Auburn scored 31 points off Xavier's 22 turnovers overall to earn a spot in the semifinals against Duke.

Ryan Welage had 17 points and Paul Scruggs 16 for the Musketeers.

ARIZONA 71, IOWA STATE 66

Arizona needed 30 minutes to get going. Once the Wildcats did, short-handed Iowa State had no real answer.

Justin Coleman scored 18 points and Arizona rallied from a 10-point second-half deficit to knock off the Cyclones 71-66.

Arizona (4-0), with its overhauled roster, was ragged well into the second half before playing better at both ends during a 12-2 run that tied it at 56-all with five minutes left. The Wildcats went ahead and stayed there, making eight straight free throws in the final 39 seconds to earn a spot in Tuesday's semifinals against No. 3 Gonzaga or Illinois.

''We didn't panic, we hung in there,'' Arizona coach Sean Miller said.

The scrappy Cyclones (3-1) played without point guard Lindell Wigginton and forward Solomon Young due to injuries, and Cam Lard and Zoran Talley because of suspensions.

That left eight scholarship players for the Maui opener against Arizona, but it didn't slow them early. The Cyclones led by seven at halftime and stretched it to 10 midway through the second half before Arizona rallied.

Marial Shayok led Iowa State with 19 points.

NO. 3 GONZAGA 84, ILLINOIS 78

Gonzaga knew it would have a tough time against Illinois' frenetic style of play.

It took the Zags some time to figure it out and they still needed some big plays down the stretch, but now they're off to the Maui Invitational semifinals.

Rui Hachimura scored 23 points, Zach Norvell Jr. added 15 and No. 3 Gonzaga held off Illinois 84-78 to earn a semifinal showdown with Arizona.

Gonzaga (4-0) overcame 22 turnovers by shooting 52 percent.

''They're a team that brings a lot of adversity,'' Gonzaga coach Mark Few said. ''When you are strong with it (the ball) and shoot a high percent, that's what ends up giving it to you.''

Gonzaga went up 13 in the second half and withstood Illinois' 10-0 run to lead nine with 97 seconds left.

The Illini weren't done, though.

Alan Griffin hit a 3-pointer and Trent Frazier scored on a four-point play to pull the Illini within 80-78.

Illinois forced Gonzaga into a difficult shot and got the ball back with 30 seconds left, but Frazier air-balled a long 3-pointer.

Gonzaga's Jeremy Jones hit two free throws to send the Zags into Tuesday's semifinals.

Frazier scored 27 of his 29 points in the second half and Giorgi Bezhanishvili added 17 for Illinois.

No. 1 Duke beats No. 8 Auburn 78-72 to reach Maui title game
November 21, 2018
By The Associated Press

LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) R.J. Barrett and Cam Reddish scored 18 points each, and top-ranked Duke survived its stiffest challenge of the season, holding off No. 8 Auburn 78-72 Tuesday night to reach the Maui Invitational title game.

The Blue Devils (5-0) got off to another stellar start, looking as if they would run another top-10 team out of the gym. But the Tigers (4-1) clawed back, trimming a 17-point deficit to 61-56 in the second half by fearlessly attacking Duke at both ends.

Every time Auburn tried to get closer, however, the Blue Devils answered with an alley-oop dunk or step-back jumper.

Duke will play No. 3 Gonzaga on Wednesday night, seeking an unprecedented sixth Maui Invitational title.

Marques Bolden anchored Duke's defense, blocking seven shots while finishing with 11 points and nine rebounds. The Blue Devils blocked 11 shots overall.

Jared Harper had 22 points and Bryce Brown 16 for Auburn.

No. 3 GONZAGA 91, ARIZONA 74

LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) - Rui Hachimura scored 24 points, Zach Norvell Jr. added 20 and Gonzaga earned a spot in the Maui Invitational title game with a win over Arizona.

Gonzaga (5-0) was out of sync late in the first half after a good start, falling into an eight-point hole.

The Zags turned the Lahaina Civic Center into The Kennel West early in the second, the cheers growing louder with each basket during a 15-2 run that put them up 56-53.

Two-time Maui champion Arizona (4-1) fought back to keep it close, but only for a little while. Gonzaga went on another run, pushing the lead 79-67, and kept the Wildcats at bay from there.

Justin Coleman had 28 points for Arizona, which had three assists on 21 field goals.

No. 16 CLEMSON 64, GEORGIA 49

GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands (AP) - Marcquise Reed scored 24 points and grabbed nine rebounds, Elijah Thomas had his second straight double-double and Clemson beat Georgia to reach the championship game of the Cayman Islands Classic.

The Tigers will play Creighton for the title Wednesday.

Thomas finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds for Clemson (5-0), off to its best start since the 2013-14 season. Shelton Mitchell, who scored a season-high 22 on Monday, chipped in with 13 points and David Skara had three of the Tigers' nine steals.

Coach Brad Brownell won his 154th game at Clemson, three from passing Bill Foster for second in program history.

Derek Ogbeide led Georgia (3-2) with 11 points.

LIPSCOMB 73, NO. 18 TCU 64

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - Garrison Mathews had 23 points, Kenny Cooper scored 17 with a couple of breakaway layups off steals and Lipscomb held on to upset TCU for its first win over a Top 25 team.

Lipscomb (4-1), the ASUN Conference preseason favorite, had been 0-13 against ranked teams since 2006. All those losses were by double digits.

Alex Robinson had 17 points, 10 rebounds and six assists for TCU (3-1), which lost a November game for the first time since 2015. The Horned Frogs' 18-game winning streak during the month had been the second-longest among Division I programs, behind only Virginia's 21 in a row.

The Bisons built a 12-point lead before Mathews rebounded a missed 3-pointer by Kouat Noi that would have tied the game with just more than a minute left. Mathews then made a 3 at the other end.

No. 21 OREGON 83, GREEN BAY 72

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - Bol Bol had 21 points and nine rebounds, Payton Pritchard added 18 points and Oregon held off Green Bay.

The Ducks (4-1) won the game at the foul line, making 33 of 42 free throws to just 9 of 18 for the Phoenix (3-3). Green Bay had a 27-22 edge in field goals, including 9-6 on 3-pointers.

Bol was the catalyst in the first half with 15 points as the Ducks led 38-29, and Pritchard scored 16 in the second half. Paul White and Will Richardson had 10 points apiece.

Sandy Cohen III led the Phoenix with 18 points.

No. 23 OHIO STATE 68, SAMFORD 50

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Kaleb Wesson scored 17 points, Keyshawn Woods added 14 and Ohio State shook off a sluggish first half to beat scrappy Samford.

Ohio State (5-0) seemed out of sync from the opening tip, as coach Chris Holtmann benched four starters for being late to ''game-day preparation,'' according to the school. The Buckeyes shot just 37.5 percent from the field in the first half while Samford shot 50 percent and led 32-29 at the break.

But in the second half, Ohio State went on a 21-3 run that sealed the win. The Buckeyes shot 50 percent to 24 percent for Samford (5-1).

Junior guard Myron Gordon led the Bulldogs with 18 points.
