April 1, 2019
ShareFacebookTwitterDiggMySpace

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) David Collins made a game-winning runner with 1.6 seconds left and finished with 23 points as South Florida edged past DePaul 63-61 in the first game of the best-of-three College Basketball Invitational championship series on Monday night.

DePaul tied it at 61 with 7.3 seconds left on Eli Cain's 3-pointer. Collins split two defenders on a high screen to get into the lane and sank a runner near the free-throw line. DePaul got it past midcourt but Cain's shot didn't hit the rim.

Laquincy Rideau had 15 points for South Florida (23-13). Alexis Yetna added 10 points and seven rebounds.

DePaul scored 25 first-half points, a season low for the team.

Cain had 19 points for the Blue Demons (18-16). Max Strus added 17 points. Femi Olujobi had 11 points.

DePaul will host South Florida on Wednesday night.

Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

? If you bet $100 on the Orioles in their first four games, you?d already be up $635.

? Tampa Bay (4-1) leads the Orioles (3-1) by a half-game atop the AL East.

? South Florida 63, DePaul 61? Bulls lead best-of-3 series, 1-0.

? Of the 17 NFL referees in 2014, only six of them still work in the NFL.

? Knicks 113, Bulls 105? Knicks cover as home favorite for 1st time since Nov. 7.

? Wonder how much it costs to open/close the roof at Marlins? Park?

**********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but??

13) Being involved in fantasy baseball and handicapping baseball teaches you patience; it is a very long season. There is a tendency to overreact to stuff that happens in the first week of the season, but as the cliche goes, it is a marathon, not a sprint.

12) Go through this every year; baseball players get hurt.
? Giancarlo Stanton (biceps strain) goes on the IL.
? 3B Miguel Andujar (labrum tear in shoulder) also went on the IL.
? Rays put 3B Joey Wendle (hamstring) on IL.
? Toronto put P Clayton Richard (knee) on IL.

11) Cardinals 6, Pirates 5 (11)? Chris Archer threw five shutout innings, bullpen blew a 4-0 lead. Archer threw 99 pitches in those five innings. Pirates wound up using eight relievers over the last six innings.

10) Orioles 6, Blue Jays 5? David Hess threw 6.1 hitless innings (82 pitches), then was taken out of the game. Toronto quickly scored two runs; Orioles hung on for dear life.

9) Braves 8, Cubs 0? Chicago made five errors in first five innings of this game; they?ve lost the last three days, giving up 26 runs. Rough start to the season.

8) Mets 7, Marlins 3? Pete Alonso hit his first major league homer, a 440-foot blast, in front of 6,489 fans, most of whom were rooting for the visitors from New York.

7) Belmont basketball coach Rick Byrd is retiring after coaching the Bruins for 33 years. Byrd won 805 games and made NCAA tournament eight times.

Belmont led the country in 2-point FG% in five of the last seven seasons.

6) If you bet on AAF games, some info thru eight weeks:
? Favorites are 22-10 SU, 16-16 vs spread
? Home teams are 18-14 SU, 16-16 vs spread.
? Under is 18-13-1.

5) Red Sox signed SS Xander Bogaerts to a 7-year, $132M contract extension.

4) There is a new minor league team this year, the Amarillo Sod Poodles, AA affiliate of the San Diego Padres. Minor league nicknames are getting weirder and weirder.

3) Phillies had four sellouts all of last year; after three home games this season, they?ve already had three sellouts. Curious to see what kind of reaction Bryce Harper gets in Washington when the Phillies play there tonight.

2) Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper has laid off one-third of its staff. 20 years ago, the paper had 340 journalists; now it?s down to 33.

1. Normal field for a PGA Tour event is 144 golfers, but The Masters has a different set of requirements. Right now, only 86 players have qualified for next week?s tournament, which would be the smallest field at Augusta since 1997.

Tuesday's NIT Semifinals
Kevin Rogers

Lipscomb (-1, 150 ?) vs. Wichita State ? 7:00 PM EST ? ESPN

This isn?t exactly the matchup people expected for the semifinals when the NIT began as Lipscomb (28-7 SU, 18-15 ATS) was a five-seed and Wichita State (22-14 SU, 21-14-1 ATS) was listed as a six-seed. The Bison were one win away from capturing the automatic bid out of the Atlantic Sun conference, but lost to Liberty at home, 74-68 to settle for the NIT.

Liberty proved to be a worthy champion from the A-Sun as the Flames bounced Mississippi State in the opening round of the NCAA tournament. However, Lipscomb didn?t hang its head for the consolation prize of playing in the NIT as the Bison went on the road (all in the state of North Carolina) to knock off Davidson, UNC-Greensboro, and North Carolina State all in the underdog role.

Lipscomb rallied to beat Davidson in the opening round as 2 ?-point underdogs, 89-81 as the Bison erased a five-point halftime deficit. The Bison shot 53% from the floor, led by Michael Buckland?s 18 points as Lipscomb connected on 11 three-pointers. Lipscomb crushed top-seed UNC-Greensboro in the second round, 86-69 as 1 ?-point ?dogs, paced by Rob Marberry?s 24 points on 12-of-13 shooting from the floor to help the Bison improve to 7-2 ATS this season when receiving points.

The final victory for Lipscomb was a thrilling one in Raleigh as the Bison squeezed past N.C. State, 94-93, while outscoring the Wolfpack in the second half, 56-46. Another member of the Bison was the star this time around as senior guard Garrison Matthews went off for 44 points, while drilling eight treys. Lipscomb entered the NIT on a 2-7 ATS run, which included six non-covers as a double-digit favorite. The underdog role worked out for the Bison, who are playing in their first ever NIT Final Four.

Wichita State had an invitation to the Big Dance in each of the previous seven seasons, including a Final Four appearance in 2013, but a complete roster overhaul put the Shockers in unfamiliar territory. The Shockers lost three games in November, while suffering five defeats before AAC play even began (WSU lost eight games all of last season).

Gregg Marshall?s team started AAC action at 1-6, including ugly back-to-back double-digit road losses to UConn and USF. However, things slowly started to turn around for the Shockers, who compiled a 9-2 run to finish conference play, although none of the victories came against great competition (six wins against Tulane, East Carolina, and SMU). Wichita State managed a pair of AAC tournament victories over East Carolina and Temple before getting squeezed by Cincinnati in the semifinals as five-point ?dogs in a 66-63 setback.

Just like Lipscomb, Wichita State had to do its damage on the highway as the Shockers beat Furman, Clemson, and Indiana on the road to make its first NIT Final Four since 2011 (which they won). After knocking off Furman as a 4 ?-point underdog in the first round, 76-70, the Shockers tripped up Clemson, 63-55 as 6 ?-point ?dogs, while limiting the Tigers to 28% shooting from the floor. Wichita State took care of top-seed Indiana, 73-63 as 3 ?-point ?dogs, 73-63, while limiting its eighth opponent in the last 10 games to less than 70 points.

Since failing to cover in the season finale victory at Tulane, the Shockers have covered six consecutive games, while becoming the first team in the history of the NIT to defeat the top three seeds on its way to the semifinals. This is the first ever meeting between Wichita State and Lipscomb, as the Bison look for their second win against an AAC squad after topping SMU as 10-point underdogs in November.

Texas vs. TCU (-1 ?, 138) ? 9:30 PM EST ? ESPN

The Big 12 has three teams going to the Final Four, all from the Lone Star State. Technically, Texas Tech is heading to the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament, while Texas and TCU have to settle for meeting in Madison Square Garden in the NIT semifinals. There is plenty of pride on the line between these two state and conference rivals as the Horned Frogs (23-13 SU, 18-18 ATS) pulled off the season sweep of the Longhorns (19-16 SU, 16-19 ATS).

TCU has captured five of the past six matchups in the series dating back to 2017 as both victories this season finished UNDER the total. These teams first met on January 23 in Fort Worth as the Horned Frogs slipped past the Longhorns, 65-61 to barely cash as three-point favorites. Both teams struggled from the floor by shooting less than 41%, while Desmond Bane led TCU with 17 points. The Horned Frogs grabbed the sweep in Austin in the regular season finale, 69-56 as seven-point underdogs, as Bane went off for 34 points on 14-of-20 shooting from the floor, while the Longhorns shot just 37%.

The Horned Frogs hoisted the NIT championship in 2017, capped off by a blowout of Georgia Tech in the title game. TCU was one-and-done in the NCAA tournament last season after losing to Syracuse in the first round, but got off to a 12-1 start this season with the lone defeat coming to Lipscomb at home. However, the Horned Frogs lost their first five road Big 12 games, while suffering 1-6 run towards the end of the season prior to the victory at Texas on March 9.

Texas jumped out to a 5-0 start, including a neutral-site upset of North Carolina in Las Vegas as nine-point underdogs in November. However, the Longhorns fell the next day to Michigan State in that same tournament, which began a three-game losing skid which included losses to Radford and VCU at home. Shaka Smart?s team leaped out to a 2-0 record in Big 12 play, as the Longhorns won at eventual conference champion Kansas State in the opener.

The ?Horns lost five of next six games after the 2-0 start, including a 10-point setback in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge to Georgia, who finished near the bottom of the league. There were several highlight wins at home, including victories over Kansas, Baylor, and Iowa State in Austin, but Texas picked up only one road win after beating K-State which came at last-place West Virginia in early February.

Both Texas and TCU reached the NIT semifinals by going 3-0 at home in their first three tournament contests. The Longhorns squeezed by South Dakota State in the opening round, 79-73 as eight-point favorites in spite of jumping out to a 19-0 lead. Texas held off Xavier in the second round, 78-76 in overtime, but once again couldn?t cash as four-point chalk. Leading scorer Kerwin Roach II, who missed the final four regular season games due to a suspension, paced Texas with 21 points, only the fourth game he has topped the 20-point mark this season.

Texas captured a win in its final home game of the season by blasting former conference rival Colorado, 68-55 as five-point favorites. Although the final margin was 13 points, the Longhorns built a commanding 44-19 halftime lead to reach their first NIT semifinals since 1978, the year they claimed their only NIT championship.

TCU is the only top seed remaining as it won all three of its NIT games by double-digits at home. The first victim was state counterpart Sam Houston State in an 82-69 triumph as 12-point favorites, followed up by an 88-72 rout of Nebraska as 4 ?-point chalk in the second round. TCU rallied past Creighton in the third round, 71-58 by outscoring the Bluejays, 41-25 in the second half as Kouat Noi led the Horned Frogs with 25 points. The Horned Frogs started the season at 5-0 ATS away from Fort Worth, but have covered only three of their last 11 games on the highway.

NCAAB
Armadillo's Write-Up

Tuesday, April 2

Hampton is 5-8 outside Big South (#211 NC sked); they won three of last four true road games, losing by seven at Campbell in Big South tourney. Pirates won eight of last nine games after being 10-15 at one point this season; they?re experience team #8 that plays pace #31 with a bench that doesn?t play much (minutes #300). Marshall won eight of its last nine games, winning last five home games; Thundering Herd is 9-6 outside C-USA; they play 5th-fastest tempo in country, are experience team #143 (#26 in MC).

Texas Southern is 6-8 outside SWAC, but all 14 of those games were on road; their first D-I home game this season was Jan 19 (they did have two non-D-I home games). Tigers won 16 of their last 18 games overall, winning their last eight true road games. TSU won its last game in triple OT at ULM, rallying back from down 14 in 2nd half. Wisc-Green Bay scored 93.3 ppg in winning first three games in this event; Phoenix is experience team #105 that plays tempo #12- they?re 7-7 outside Horizon (NC sked #10). Green Bay won six of its last seven home games.

NIT, New York City

Lipscomb has to be very fired up to be playing in NYC; they?re located in Nashville, so they?re not yokels, but national TV for an A-Sun team is a big deal. Lipscomb won at TCU this year, lost by 4 at Louisville; they beat NC State 94-93 in Raleigh LW, making 14-28 on arc. Bisons are #48 experience team whose eFG% is #48 in country. Wichita State won 14 of its last 17 games after starting season 8-11; they?re experience team #274 (#346 in MC) that has been riding on back of senior F McDuffie. All three of Shockers? NIT wins were true road games.

TCU beat Texas twice this season, 65-61 at home, then 69-56 in Austin; Texas took total of only 16 FT?s in those two games. Longhorns lost their last four games away from home- their last road win was Feb 9 in West Virginia. Texas is experience team #281 that plays tempo #320. TCU won five of its last six games, winning two of last three on road; Horned Frogs are #203 that is very thin due to in-season defections. TCU scored 80.3 ppg in winning its last three games. Dixon is rumored to be in the mix for the UCLA job; he is a TCU alum but grew up in LA.

Lipscomb edges Wichita State in NIT
April 2, 2019
ShareFacebookTwitterDiggMySpace

NEW YORK (AP) Garrison Mathews is the kind of player only the most die-hard basketball fans would know, his prolific scoring seldom on any sports highlight clips. With the college basketball spotlight blasted on Madison Square Garden, Mathews put the sport on notice and buried a shot in the clutch that sparked madness for tiny Lipscomb.

Mathews swished his ninth 3-pointer of the game in front of an exuberant Lipscomb bench for the lead with 1:10 left in the game to send the Bisons on their way to the NIT championship in a 71-64 win over Wichita State on Tuesday night.

''It was good to just do it for the team and kind of give us a lift,'' he said.

He carried them to the NIT final. Lipscomb will face Texas, a 58-44 semifinal winner over TCU, Thursday for the NIT title.

Mathews had been buried in obscurity for the ASUN Conference Bisons (29-7), but put on a show on national television in crunch time at Madison Square Garden. He yelled as the shot fell from beyond NBA 3-point range and the Bisons rose from the bench in jubilation. Mathews sealed the win with free throws and finished with 34 points, setting the stage for Lipscomb to play for its first NIT championship.

''People should know about us by now,'' forward Rob Marberry said. ''I think people can finally see Lipscomb's a basketball school now.''

Wichita State's Samajae Haynes-Jones stole the ball near the 3-point line and the 6-foot guard exploded for a fast break dunk that turned MSG yellow and gave the Shockers a late double-digit lead. But they faded down the stretch and one of the hottest second-half teams in basketball missed their final 10 shots and over the final 8-plus minutes to head home empty-handed.

Dexter Dennis scored 13 points and Markis McDuffie had 12 for the Shockers.

The Shockers had a solid season under coach Gregg Marshall, six years after he led the program to the Final Four. Marshall led the Shockers to the 2011 NIT championship, a springboard for the most successful era in program history. The Shockers (22-15) made their own sensational run in the NIT, beating the No. 1, 2 and 3 seeds, all on the road, just to make it to New York.

''This was a year we could have taken a big dip. I mean, a big dip,'' Marshall said. ''But we're in Madison Square Garden playing in April.''

The Shockers had their hands full against the fifth-seeded Bisons.

A year after NIT champion Penn State drew big, rowdy crowds to Madison Square Garden, the arena was nearly empty for the matchup between teams from Kansas and Tennessee. New Yorkers wasted their chance to watch Mathews, named to The Associated Press All-America honorable mention team. Mathews was named ASUN player of the year and averaged 26.3 points in the NIT. He entered with a whopping 2,429 career points and scored 44 points in an NIT quarterfinal win over North Carolina State.

He created open looks by moving without the ball and was a burst of energy in Lipscomb's first ever game against the Shockers.

Mathews hit three 3s and scored 18 points in the first half to give Lipscomb a 35-30 lead at the break. The Bisons, who lost the ASUN Tournament championship game to Liberty, looked to Mathews every chance they got. He buried a 3 on a fast break off a turnover to bring the Bisons within one, and even his misses worked in their favor. He missed on a long 3, but Ahsan Asadullah scored on an uncontested tip for a five-point lead.

SOMETHING DIFFERENT

The NIT was a bit of a mad scientist in the college basketball lab. The 3-point line was extended to the same distance used by FIBA (22 feet, 1.75 inches). The free throw lane matched the NBA and was widened from 12 to 16 feet. The shot clock also reset to 20 seconds after an offensive rebound instead of the full 30 seconds, as well as other minor changes.

The experimental rules will help the NCAA determine if a marginally more difficult 3-point shot will be effective for college basketball and if widening the lane will reduce physicality and create more driving opportunities.

''The style of play in men's college basketball is healthy and appealing, but the leadership governing the game is interested in keeping the playing rules contemporary and trending favorably,'' said Dan Gavitt, NCAA senior vice president of basketball.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) Jon Elmore scored 23 of his 28 points in the first half and Marshall held on to beat Hampton 80-78 in the semifinals of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament on Tuesday night.

Elmore had 23 points, five rebounds and five assists in the first half as Marshall built a 51-38 lead. He was 7 of 12 from the field, including 6 of 9 from distance. Marshall made 11 3-pointers in the first 20 minutes and finished with 13.

Hampton trailed by 13 points early in the second half, but rallied to take its first lead, 65-64, since the 5:52 mark of the first half.

C.J. Burks made a go-ahead transition layup following a steal to give Marshall a 76-74 lead and he added four straight free throws from there to seal it.

Burks scored 10 of Marshall's final 11 points and finished with 17. Jannson Williams added 12 points for Marshall (22-14), which will host the championship game on Thursday night.

Trevond Barnes had 18 points for the Pirates (18-17). Kalin Fisher added 16 points. Jermaine Marrow had 15 points.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) Sandy Cohen III scored 23 points as Green Bay narrowly beat Texas Southern 87-86 in overtime in the semifinals of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament on Tuesday night.

Cohen stole it at the top of the 3-point arc and raced the other way for a dunk and free throw for an 85-82 lead with 1:10 to go.

Jeremy Combs made a put-back shot with eight seconds left to give Texas Southern an 86-85 lead but after a timeout, Cohen dribbled down the court and sank a free-throw line jumper at 1.5. The Tigers' heave at the buzzer didn't hit the rim.

Trevian Bell added a career-high 21 points for the Phoenix (21-16). Tank Hemphill had 12 points and Cohen reached 1,000 points in just his 59th game with Green Bay.

Green Bay will play at Marshall on Thursday night in the championship game.

Tyrik Armstrong had 23 points for the Tigers (24-14). Combs added 21 points. Devocio Butler had 19 points.

Texas takes care of TCU, 58-44
April 2, 2019
ShareFacebookTwitterDiggMySpace

NEW YORK (AP) Kerwin Roach II is the Texas guard's name, the numerals not part of the running tally marker for his season suspensions.

Back on the roster, Roach stayed in the game and kept the Longhorns in the hunt to end the season in New York with a championship.

Roach turned a season marred by suspension into a can't-miss performance in the first half to help Texas get comfortable at Madison Square Garden and beat TCU 58-44 on Tuesday night for a spot in the NIT championship.

''It was tough for our team when he went out,'' coach Shaka Smart said. ''It was certainly tough for him. He was really, really down and disappointed in himself.''

''But, I told him, you're going to get to play again.''

He's got one more game left, and the Longhorns (20-16) will play Lipscomb for the title on Thursday night at the Garden.

Roach served two suspensions this season and was pained as he had to watch senior night festivities from the bench. Roach was reinstated for the Big 12 Tournament and led Texas to its fourth straight win in the NIT. He scored 13 of his 22 points in the first half to spark the Longhorns to a 15-point lead, and they held on against pesky TCU (23-14). Texas can win its first NIT title since 1978.

TCU had swept the season series against Texas and failed to go 3-0 against its in-state and Big 12 rival. Texas still has won 18 of the last 25 games against the Horned Frogs.

TCU coach Jamie Dixon insisted his team (with a 7-11 mark in the Big 12) was snubbed by the NCAA Tournament selection committee and used it as a motivating force for the program. Fueled by the snub, the Horned Frogs stormed past Sam Houston State, Nebraska and Creighton to get to New York.

Dixon has led a traditionally downtrodden program in TCU into a mid-pack Big 12 winner, one reason why speculation has swirled that UCLA has targeted him as a candidate for its vacancy.

''I have a great job. I'm very lucky where I'm at,'' Dixon said, dismissing UCLA questions.

Alex Robinson, who led TCU with 12 points, said Dixon made postseason play possible in Fort Worth, Texas.

''I remember before he got here, we were a really separated bunch,'' he said. ''He made sure we came together and played together.''

The Horned Frogs won the NIT in 2017 and made the NCAA Tournament last season for the first time in 20 years. The push for back-to-back tourney bids fell just short, and so did a second-half run that whittled the lead to five.

Roach dunked off a beautiful backdoor cut and Dylan Osetkowski scored a baseline layup off a pick-and-roll to give Texas breathing room and end the threat. Roach had averaged 15.7 points in the NIT, Osetkowski had 15.3 points and the duo delivered again in the semifinal. Osetkowski, who had 13 points and nine rebounds, connected on a late 3 that made it a 14-point lead and left only a few hundred burnt orange cheering faithful in the house.

Smart has only said that Roach violated university policy for the stretch-run suspension of his leading scorer (14.8 points). Roach had also been suspended for the season opener and the 2016 season opener. Against TCU, Roach hit his only 3 and made 6 of 8 shots overall in the first half for 13 points and a 31-17 lead.

The Longhorns went 1-4 in his absence over his most recent suspension ended before the Big 12 Tournament.

Three career suspensions, and one more chance to cut down the nets.

''He's a guy that's got a level of athleticism that allows him to get by his man and put the other team in a bit of a bind,'' Smart said.

GET COMFY AGAIN

Texas returns to MSG in November - along with Duke, Georgetown and California - to play in the Empire Classic.

Wednesday?s 6-pack

Some very early NFL over/under win totals:

? Arizona 5, under -$130

? Atlanta 8.5, over -$125

? Baltimore 8.5

? Buffalo 6, under -$120

? Carolina 8, under -$120

? Chicago 9.5

Quote of the Day

?Everybody wanted to play out the season and everybody is disappointed. Everyone was led to believe that the Alliance was well-funded and we could play three years without making any money and this, that and the other. Obviously, everything that was said was not very truthful.? Steve Spurrier, talking about the AAF

Monday?s quiz
Last time only one #1-seed got to the Final Four was three years ago, when #1-seed North Carolina lost to Villanova in the national title game.

***********************************

Wednesday?s List of 13: Mid-week musings??.

13) After eight weeks of games, the AAF has suspended operations, which is sad for the people who worked there. Players only got paid for the first seven weeks of the season.

Takes lots of money to fund a start-up league like this; there are rumors that the guy from the NHL?s Carolina Hurricanes who invested in the AAF only wanted access to the technology for the league?s betting app, and once he had that, he pulled the plug on spending more money. Supposedly, he dropped $70M on this fiasco. Must be a good betting app.

Not sure what this means, if anything, for the XFL, which starts up next spring.

12) So it is April 2 and here in upstate New York, spring is slowly emerging. It was 46 degrees when I left my house today; in the bank, a guy in line behind me was wearing shorts. Oy.

11) Ronald Acu?a signed a $100M extension with the Braves that keeps his contract under team control until 2028. Team-friendly deal.

10) Seattle TV analyst Mike Blowers told an interesting story Monday night:

Blowers was playing for the Mariners in the mid-90?s; Lou Piniella (a noted hothead) was the manager. Blowers made two errors in the 9th inning that cost Seattle the last game of a road trip. Blowers: ?Lou was sitting towards the front of the plane; he wasn?t real happy with me.?

Next game for Seattle is a home game; Blowers comes to the plate for the first time, and is booed when his name is announced. He hits a grand slam.

Second time up, Blowers is still booed a little; he hits a 3-run homer.

Third time up, Blowers gets a standing ovation.

Lessons: Baseball is a tough game; people are fickle.

9) Washington Wizards fired team president Ernie Grunfeld after 16 seasons; Wizards are having their first losing season in six years. Washington hasn?t been to a conference final since 1979, so the franchise?s issues go way back before Grunfeld was around.

8) Last Thursday, Michael Reed started in RF on Opening Day for the Giants; he went 0-8 with six strikeouts in four games and Tuesday, he was designated for assignment. Produce or else.

7) Nationals? SS Trea Turner tried to bunt last night; the ball hit his finger and he left the game, with what looked a lot like a broken finger.

6) Former tennis star Billie Jean King is a minority owner of the LA Dodgers.

5) Few years ago, I?m driving thru New Jersey and stop for gas. I get out of the car and start pumping the gas, and this little Asian guy comes running out of the store, yelling at me, waving his arms. Apparently it is illegal in New Jersey to pump your own gas. Who knew?

Funny thing, they pump it for you but the gas is still cheaper than it is in New York.

4) From Christopher Kamka: Last time Cubs, White Sox, Bulls, Blackhawks all won on the same day was April 21, 2012, the day Philip Humber threw a perfect game for the White Sox.

3) Puerto Rico has a larger population than 21 of the 50 states.

2) Lipscomb 71, Wichita State 64? Shockers led by 11 in second half, but veteran Lipscomb team rallied back, scored last 14 points of the game and will play for the NIT title Thursday night.

1) Texas 58, TCU 44? If you had Texas-Lipscomb in your NIT brackets, you?re about to get paid. TCU beat the Longhorns twice during the regular season, but came up empty here.

April 3, 2019

CHICAGO (AP) Max Strus scored 32 points and DePaul beat South Florida 100-96 in overtime Wednesday night, sending the College Basketball Invitational championship round to a deciding third game.

DePaul (19-16) will host the Bulls (23-14) on Friday night for the title.

Paul Reed had a career-high 28 points along with 16 rebounds and three blocks for the Blue Demons to tie the series at one game each. Femi Olujobi added 14 points.

Reed hit a 3-pointer to give DePaul an 82-79 lead, but he missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 57 seconds left in regulation. USF worked the ball around the arc and Alexis Yetna made a 3-pointer to tie it with a half-minute left. After a timeout, Strus dribbled down the clock, but nearly turned it over as time expired.

Lyrik Shreiner got into the lane and made a contested layup to extend DePaul's lead to 94-88 with 1:41 left in overtime. The Blue Demons stayed ahead by making foul shots.

Laquincy Rideau had a career-high 35 points and eight assists and South Florida. Yetna had 26 points and 13 rebounds, and Justin Brown added 13 points.

Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Some more very early NFL over/under win totals:

? Cincinnati 6, over -$115

? Cleveland 9, over +$120

? Dallas 8.5, 0ver -$135

? Denver 7, over -$115

? Detroit, 7

? Green Bay 9, 0ver -$125

**********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud??

13) Was looking at an old picture of Ebbets Field in Brooklyn tonight; the dugouts there were a lot closer to the area behind home plate than they are now. I?m guessing dugouts were also much smaller then than they are now.

Which reminded me of an old story back when the Astros played in the Astrodome; someone told Houston?s owner that he could charge more money for seats behind the dugout, so that season, the Astrodome had the longest dugouts in major league history. Go figure.

12) Brewers 1, Reds 0? Memo to the Milwaukee analytics geniuses: This one is simple. Every time Freddy Peralta pitches, Manny Pina catches. Every time.

In 15 games with Pina behind the plate, batters have hit .168 vs Peralta.
In three games with other catchers, batters have hit .245 against him.

11) Nationals 9, Phillies 8? Jake Noll walked with the bases loaded to force in the winning run, handing the Phils their first loss, but he was sent to the minor leagues after the game, because Howie Kendrick comes off the DL tomorrow.

10) Last time the Phillies started a season 4-0? How about 1915. Wow.

9) Nuggets 113, Spurs 85? I?ve thought about picking NBA games on this site, but there are a lot of reasons why I don?t want to. Players taking games off when they?re not hurt is a big one.

Gregg Popovich got thrown out of this game 1:03 after it started, so obviously, the game didn?t mean much to him. Since the Spurs clinched a playoff spot last week, Popovich has been ejected twice in the Spurs? last three games.

8) Coaching carousel:
? Texas A&M hired Virginia Tech coach Buzz Williams
? Fairfield hired Rutgers assistant Jay Young as its new coach.

7) Fred Hoiberg is the new basketball coach at Nebraska; he was born in Lincoln.

His grandfather Jerry Bush coached the Cornhuskers in the late 50?s. Hoiberg?s other grandfather was a Sociology professor at Nebraska.

6) There are two basketball Hall of Fames; there is the Naismith Hall of Fame in Springfield, MA which includes all of basketball, and there is the College Basketball Hall of Fame in Kansas City.

No idea what goes into the selection process for either, but this is odd:
? Jerry Tarkanian is in the Naismith HOF, but not the college basketball HOF.
? Eddie Sutton is in the college basketball HOF, but not the Naismith HOF.

5) Virginia coach Tony Bennett banked a $250K bonus when the Cavaliers won their Sweet 16 game, and another $250K when Virginia made it to the Final Four.

4) Fantasy baseball is funny sometimes; guy in our league cut Hunter Renfroe this week, and rightfully so, he had only started one game this season, but same night Renfroe got cut, he gets the start against Arizona and hits two homers off of Zack Greinke. Go figure.

3) Colorado Rockies signed P German Marquez to a five-year, $43M contract extension.

Cubs signed IF David Bote to a 5-year, $15M extension.

2) Average salary for an NFL referee this season is scheduled to be $205,000. Pretty good part-time job.

1) Advance planning: Chicago White Sox? home opener for Thursday afternoon was postponed at roughly noon Wednesday; it?ll be played Friday instead.

Likewise, the Cardinals? home opener with San Diego today was also moved to Friday.
