Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Top 6 picks in Week 12 of Westgate SuperBook NFL handicapping contest (3,123 entries)

1) Patriots -9.5 (1,007)- W

2) Giants +6 (902)- W

3) Steelers -3 (837)- L

4) Packers +3.5 (721)- L

5) Panthers -3.5 (691)- L

6) Colts -7.5 (683)- L

Season record: 37-32-3

**********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Den: Wrapping up a sports Sunday

Seahawks 30, Panthers 27? Carolina had ball nine times in this game; they got inside Seattle 20-yard line on seven of those nine drives, but scored only 27 points, which isn?t good, and it cost them this game- they also missed a 51-yard FG on one of the two drives that didn?t get into the red zone. Panthers also fumbled five times, though they didn?t lose any of them.

Carolina lost its last three games, with no takeaways in any of them; this was their first home loss this season. Seattle passes the Panthers in Wild Card race; they?re 10-6-2 in last 18 games as a road underdog.

Browns 35, Bengals 20? Maybe it is Hue Jackson?s fault; Browns won two of three games since they sent Jackson away, scoring 28-35 points in last two games. Bengals brought Jackson on as an assistant coach and haven?t won since, giving up 51-24-35 points in their last three games.

Cleveland?s offense in first half: 4 drives, 37 plays, 289 yards, four TD?s. They ran out the last 0:32 of the first half with a fifth drive.

Andy Dalton hurt his thumb in this game, as Cincy lost for 5th time in last six tries.

Browns ended a 25-game losing streak with this win.

Buccaneers 27, 49ers 9? This doesn?t happen much, but every so often, handicapping is a simple game. Saturday night, 49ers? LB Reuben Foster was arrested at the team?s hotel and charged with domestic violence. The night before a game- brilliant!!! This makes the 49ers a go-against play.

49ers released Foster after the game.

Buccaneers gained 400+ yards for 6th time in last seven games, but won for first time in last five weeks. For once, they didn?t turn the ball over, going +3 in turnovers.

Eagles 25, Giants 22:
? Giants in first half: 5 drives, 38 plays, 346 yards, 19 points
? Giants in second half: 5 drives, 22 plays, 56 yards, 3 points.
? Philly was scoreless in first quarter for 5th game in a row.
? Eagles won 17 of their last 21 games against the Giants.

Unless Saquon Barkley is hurt and Giants are hushing it up, they committed malpractice here by not feeding him the ball enough. 13 runs, 8 pass targets wasn?t near enough in this game and for the love of God, if you go for two points from the 1-yard line, give him the bleeping ball!!!!

Bills 24, Jaguars 21? This game was like a throwback to the 70?s; both teams ran for more yards than they threw for; Bills completed only 8 passes all day, but on an unseasonably warm day in western NY (44 degrees), Jacksonville lost its 7th game in a row.

Bills? rookie QB Allen ran the ball 13 times for 99 yards; unless he learns to slide or get OB and avoid big hits, he is going to have a short NFL career. He?s got talent, but he?s got to preserve his health, or else??..

Ravens 34, Raiders 17? Speaking of running QB?s, Lamar Jackson toned it down in this game, running only 11 times, after 27 runs LW; Jackson is 2-0 as an NFL starter while Oakland lost for 6th time in its last seven games. Raiders are 15 for their last 55 on third down.

Patriots 27, Jets 13? New England is now 13-2 in last 15 series games; they gained 498 yards in this game, averaging 9.1 yards/pass attempt in a game where Jets had 10-yard advantage in field position. Patriots won last five series games played in the New Jersey swamp; they?re 14-7 vs spread in last 21 games as road favorites.

The Duke Blue Devils aren?t invincible. That?s what Gonzaga proved last week. However, they are still very good, and the Indiana Hoosiers are going to get a taste of that this week. This is a matchup between two of the most successful programs in the history of college basketball. Duke is still on top but Indiana doesn?t have that type of talent this year.

Indiana would love nothing more than to go on the road and pull an upset that would no doubt be a huge benefit for March Madness purposes. However, the Hoosiers more likely goal will be covering the spread because Duke has a dominant team and will be backed by a raucous crowd.

The Blue Devils will aim to get back on track in this one and should have no issue doing so in NCAA basketball gambling.

This NCAA basketball game between the Indiana Hoosiers and Duke Blue Devils will be held at Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, North Carolina at 10:30 p.m ET on Tuesday, November 27th, 2018. The game will be nationally televised on ESPN.

We'll have NCAA basketball odds at BookMaker.eu available for every game of the 2018 NCAA basketball season.

Odds Analysis

The Duke Blue Devils are 5-1 on the season. They fell for the first time last time out against Gonzaga but still might be the best team in the country. Duke has played a pair of games at home this season and has won both of them.

Indiana is also 5-1 on the season. It lost to Arkansas by a point on November 18 but has otherwise gone unblemished. The loss to the Razorbacks was the Hoosiers? lone road game of the year thus far. Both teams can really score so the scoring total figures to be pretty high for this matchup in NCAA basketball odds.

Last Time Out

There were some expecting Duke to go much of the year without a loss so the defeat to Gonzaga was certainly a surprise. The Blue Devils fell behind by as many as 16 points in the second half but rallied before falling short, 89-87. Gonzaga missed multiple free throws down the stretch to give Duke a chance but the Blue Devils had four shots blocked in the last couple minutes as they couldn?t complete the comeback.

Star freshman Zion Williams had 22 points and 10 rebounds while while R.J. Barrett had a team-high 23 points. Even though Duke lost it was a good learning experience that may pay dividends down the road.

Player To Watch

Juwan Morgan -- The Indiana big man should play a big role in whether or not the Hoosiers can hang around in this one. He is averaging 17.5 points, 9.0 blocks and 1.3 blocks per game on the season. Morgan is shooting 71.7 percent from the floor and hopes to get a multitude of easy buckets.

Morgan struggles from the free throw line and Duke would be smart to send him there when he has an easy look at the basket. Duke has the talent advantage on the court so the Hoosiers need players to step up, and Morgan is at the top of that list.

Free NCAA Basketball ATS Picks

The loss last time out was but a bump in what should be a special season for Duke. Williamson should be able to dominate this game and the Blue Devils will pull away. Indiana is trying to prove it can hang with the big boys but this will be a dose of reality.

Take Duke in a blowout victory at home in NCAA basketball betting. The ?under? could be the right call as the scoring will slow down late when the game is in hand.

NCAA Basketball Pick: Duke Blue Devils 87, Indiana Hoosiers 70

Experienced Gonzaga, UVA stand tall early
November 26, 2018
By The Associated Press

PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas (AP) Experienced Gonzaga and Virginia sent not-so-subtle reminders not to discount talented, veteran-led teams.

While Duke and its vaunted freshmen class were the talk college basketball for the first two weeks of the season, Gonzaga and Virginia walked away with titles to cap off Thanksgiving holiday tournaments.

The Zags held off the much-ballyhooed Blue Devils to win the Maui Invitational in what could have been a preview of a late-March showdown. At the other end of the spectrum were the Cavaliers, who beat No. 25 Wisconsin to win the Battle 4 Atlantis in a low-scoring game featuring teams content to grind it out with defense and clock-melting stretches that limited the number of possessions and magnified any mistake.

Both styles worked.

''We said we want to learn something as every team would as they come into this tournament,'' Virginia coach Tony Bennett said after Friday's win against the Badgers and preseason Associated Press All-American Ethan Happ.

Experience also showed for No. 6 Nevada and No. 11 Michigan State in winning separate brackets at the Las Vegas Invitational , with both being led by upperclassmen (Wolf Pack fifth-year senior Caleb Martin and Spartans junior Cassius Winston) who earned MVP honors. And in Michigan State's case, that title came by maintaining poise well enough to rally from 19 down against Texas.

Here are some takeaways from those holiday tournaments:

MAUI'S TOP TRIO

Maui had the best field of the week with Duke, Gonzaga and No. 8 Auburn, so there were plenty of measuring-stick moments among legitimate Final Four contenders.

No team was more impressive than Gonzaga - in any tournament.

The Zags offense created problems for Duke, with the Blue Devils having a hard time deciphering all their ball screens and motion. Gonzaga will only get stronger when 6-foot-10 junior Killian Tillie returns from preseason ankle surgery in the coming weeks. Tournament MVP Rui Hachimura, a versatile and aggressive 6-8 junior forward, is establishing himself as one of the nation's top players.

But it was Gonzaga's defensive efforts that most impressed coach Mark Few, who said, ''We can really build on that.''

DOMINANT HUNTER

Virginia showcased a growing, game-changing presence in 6-7 redshirt sophomore De'Andre Hunter.

Hunter was the Atlantis MVP in the Bahamas after three sometimes-dominant performances. First came a near triple-double against Middle Tennessee. Then he matched a career-high with 23 points and hit a key 3-pointer with about a minute left to help hold off Dayton . He closed with 20 points against Wisconsin.

He was the ACC's sixth man of the year last year but suffered a broken wrist that sidelined him for the NCAA Tournament - and the Cavs certainly missed him as they struggled to contain UMBC's guards in that unprecedented 16-vs-1 March upset. As long as he stays healthy, he's a weapon at both ends alongside veterans Kyle Guy and Ty Jerome, not to mention Virginia's best NBA prospect by far.

''You look at the length and the dimensions, and some of those nice plays he makes offensively,'' Bennett said. ''But I get equally excited about what he's doing defensively, spreading out and being able to guard sometimes a 4, sometimes a perimeter guy. And his alertness took a step in the right direction.''

CHAMPS BACK?

There is reason for optimism at Villanova, though the reigning national champs still have work to do.

The Wildcats looked befuddled in a blowout home loss to Michigan in a rematch of last year's title game and an overtime home loss to Furman , which knocked the Wildcats out of the Top 25 poll. Guard Phil Booth said at the time the Wildcats are ''a young team trying to find our way.''

Villanova looked more like it had figured out that path at the AdvoCare Invitational in Orlando, Florida.

The Wildcats beat Canisius, Oklahoma State and No. 14 Florida State. Sunday's 66-60 win against the Seminoles prompted coach Jay Wright to note: ''We've grown so much.''

And they are still growing, trying to replace the talent from last year's title winner, including AP national player of the year Jalen Brunson and Final Four most outstanding player Donte DiVincenzo.

ON POINT

Freshman Coby White could be taking hold of the starting point guard job for North Carolina.

He had 33 points - the most by a UNC freshman since Harrison Barnes had 40 in the 2011 Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament - and seven 3-pointers in the loss to Texas in the Las Vegas Invitational. He followed with 19 points and eight assists against UCLA.

The production came with junior point guard Seventh Woods sidelined by a concussion. Woods lacks White's scoring potential but has 27 assists with just six turnovers.

REPLACING YOUNG

Oklahoma senior guard Christian James appears ready to fill the scoring void created by the one-and-done departure of Trae Young to the NBA.

Young led the country in scoring and assists; James arrived at the Battle 4 Atlantis averaging a Big 12-best 22.7 points.

James had at least 18 points in three straight games as Oklahoma finished third. Coach Lon Kruger has said he expects it will have to be a group effort this year to replace Young's production, but added: James ''is shooting with confidence and making good plays.''

James said his teammates are telling him they need him to score and ''that takes a load off of me knowing I can relax and play my game and let it flow.''

Gonzaga wins first game as nation's No. 1
November 26, 2018
By The Associated Press

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) Trayvon Reed scored 23 points and John Jones added 20 to help Texas Southern shock No. 18 Oregon with an 89-84 victory Monday night.

Reed, a 7-foot-2 senior, made all nine of his shots and also was 5-for-5 from the foul line for the Tigers (2-4), who were 24-point underdogs.

It was just the fourth nonconference loss at home for the Ducks since Matthew Knight Arena opened in 2011.

Oregon led by 13 points early in the second half before the Tigers rallied. Reed's dunk with 9:59 left in the game capped a 23-8 run and gave the Tigers a 61-59 advantage. Bol Bol, the Ducks' 7-2 freshman center, had 32 points and 11 rebounds for his third double-double. He hit two free throws with 3:20 left to tie the game at 75.

Reed then scored four straight points to give the Tigers a 79-75 advantage with 2:18 left. Will Richardson hit two free throws 12 seconds later to get Oregon back within two.

Derrick Bruce had eight of his 13 points in the final 1:11 to seal the win, including making all six of his free throws in the final 43 seconds.

Payton Pritchard had 14 points, and Will Richardson and Victor Bailey Jr. added 13 each for Oregon (4-2).

No. 1 GONZAGA 102, NORTH DAKOTA STATE 60

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - Brandon Clarke and Rui Hachimura each scored 18 points as Gonzaga beat North Dakota State to remain undefeated.

Corey Kispert added 17 points and Zach Norvell Jr. 15 for Gonzaga (7-0), which reached No. 1 in The Associated Press Top 25 earlier in the day by virtue of beating former No. 1 Duke at the Maui Invitational.

Vinnie Shahid scored 16 points for North Dakota State (2-5), which shot just 36 percent in the game.

Clarke made all nine of his field goal attempts and added eight rebounds and five blocks for Gonzaga. Six Zags scored in double figures.

Gonzaga has beaten four teams from Power Five conferences already this season, and came in averaging 97 points per game to 71 for the Bison.

North Dakota State stayed close early, and led 19-18 with just over 10 minutes left in the first.

No. 25 MISSISSIPPI STATE 88, ALCORN STATE 65

STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) - Nick Weatherspoon and Lamar Peters both scored 17 points, Reggie Perry added 16 points and 11 rebounds and Mississippi State beat Alcorn State.

Mississippi State was efficient on offense, shooting 33 of 54 (61 percent) from the field. Weatherspoon shot 6 of 10, including 2 of 3 from 3-point range. Peters was 6 of 9 shooting, including 5 of 8 from behind the arc.

The Bulldogs led by as many as 33 points in the second half. Quinndary Weatherspoon added 14 points and Tyson Carter had 10.

Mississippi State (5-1) was a little careless with turnovers in the opening minutes, but recovered to push its lead to 44-29 by halftime. The Bulldogs shot 17 of 25 (68 percent) from the field in the first half, including 4 of 6 from 3-point range.

Alcorn State (1-6) was led by Deshaw Andrews, who scored 26 points. The Braves shot just 37.3 percent from the field.

Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Betting lines on this weekend?s college football conference title games:

? Pac-12: Washington -5.5 vs Utah

? AAC: Central Florida -3 vs Memphis

? Big X: Oklahoma -7.5 vs Texas

? SEC: Alabama -13 vs Georgia

? ACC: Clemson -26 vs Pittsburgh

? Big 14: Ohio State -14.5 vs Northwestern

**********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but??.

13) OK, first thing today, I?d like some feedback from you, the reader; whats your favorite Christmas song? I?ll post some of the more interesting answers I get sometime before Christmas.

E-mail me at ffib13@gmail.com Thanks.

12) Jacksonville Jaguars fired offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett Monday, then named Cody Kessler their new starting QB for their home game against the Colts this week.

Previous starter Blake Bortles had started 70+ consecutive games for Jacksonville, but the team?s 7-game losing streak cost him his starting job, at least for now. During Bortles? tenure as the Jaguars? starting QB, Jacksonville fired three offensive coordinators.

11) We all think its great to be a pro athlete or a celebrity, but can you imagine what it is like to be sitting at home Monday night watching the ballgame and while a Tennessee player is hurt. the TV geniuses decide to analyze whats wrong with the Jaguars.

All of a sudden, it becomes a ?bash Bortles? thing; we all know that QB?s get too much credit and too much blame, thats why they get paid a lot of cash. But it still has to be weird to be sitting at home and hear guys who may or may not know a lot critiquing your career.

10) Aaron Rodgers lost his last eight road starts; it?s the longest road losing streak by a Packers QB since David Whitehurst lost nine straight from 1978-81.

9) Bengals lost QB Andy Dalton (hand) for the season; backup Jeff Driskel will get his first NFL start Sunday at home against Denver. Driskel has thrown 36 passes in four NFL games; he was 17-29 passing in Sunday?s loss to the Browns.

8) Texans 34, Titans 17? When did it become OK for football coaches to become reckless and go for it on 4th down whenever they feel like it? The NFL is a multi-billion dollar business, do things that are smart!!!

Down 14-10 late in 2nd quarter, Tennessee had 4th-and-1 on the Houston 2-yard line. Instead of doing the smart thing, kicking a FG to make it 14-13, Titans not only go for it, they give the ball to a backup TE masquerading as a fullback, first time he ever carried the ball in the NFL.

The play doesn?t work, Houston runs the next play 97 yards for a TD and school is out. There is a proper time to be conservative and/or ?normal.? You do enough goofy things that don?t work, and your players will stop believing in you.

7) Last week was the first time the Big East didn?t have anyone in college basketball?s top 25 since February, 1982. Villanova is back in the top 25 this week.

6) Of the first 85 games ACC basketball teams played this month, only four of them were true road games, and North Carolina played two of those (Wofford, Elon).

5) Atlanta Braves signed C Brian McCann to replace Kurt Suzuki and fill out their platoon at catcher with Tyler Flowers. Braves are also expected to sign 3B Josh Donaldson to a one-year deal, which Donaldson would use to get a longer deal at this time next year.

4) Red Sox beat the Dodgers in the World Series; the difference in each player?s winning share and losing share of World Series money: $154,810.23.

3) Random fact: 19,429 baseball players have made it to the major leagues.

2) Ole Miss football team went 0-8 against the spread in conference games this season, the first SEC team to do that, since at least 1985. They?re fifth team since 2005 in any conference to go winless against the spread in league play.

1) This week, Rhode Island became the 8th state to have legalized sports betting; New York hasn?t done a damn thing yet, while everyone goes over to New Jersey to bet, and spend money on food and Christmas shopping. Brilliant!!!

Tuesday's Tip Sheet
David Schwab

First up is the Pittsburgh Panthers on the road against the Iowa Hawkeyes. The North Carolina State Wolfpack are in Madison to take on the Wisconsin Badgers and the highlight of the night is a 9:30 p.m. tip in Durham between the Indiana Hoosiers and the No. 3 Duke Blue Devils.

Pittsburgh Panthers at Iowa Hawkeyes (ESPNU, 9:00 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: Iowa -13 ?, Total 152 ?

Betting Matchup

As Pitts? football team prepares to face Clemson in the ACC Championship, the basketball team will be trying to extend its current SU winning streak to seven games. The Panthers have been able to cover in five of their first six games, including a big 75-73 upset against St. Louis last Wednesday as four-point underdogs. The total has gone OVER in four of those first six games.

Iowa is also undefeated at 5-0 SU, but it has been a tough bet at 2-3 ATS. The total has gone OVER in three of those five games. The Hawkeyes? biggest win so far was 77-69 victory against Oregon as four-point underdogs on Nov. 15. The next night, Iowa hammered Connecticut 91-72 to easily cover as a 4 ?-point favorite. Sophomore forward Luke Garza has been the team?s leading scorer with 16.2 points per game.

Betting Trends

--The Panthers are just 2-9 ATS in their last 11 games playing a Big Ten Team and the total has stayed UNDER in four of their last five matchups against this conference.

--The Hawkeyes are 5-17 ATS in their last 22 ACC matchups and the total has gone OVER in 22 of their last 30 home games.

--This will be the first meeting between the two in recent memory.

North Carolina State Wolfpack at Wisconsin Badgers (ESPN 2, 9:00 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: Wisconsin -7, Total 144

Betting Matchup

The Wolfpack are another ACC team with perfect SU 6-0 start in their first six games. They have been able to cover in four of those six outings after closing as heavy double-digit favorites in all six contests. The total has stayed UNDER in four of the six games. Senior guard Torin Dorn has led the way with 18.2 points and 7.2 rebounds a game. He put up 19 points and pulled down nine rebounds in NC State?s recent win against Mercer.

Wisconsin?s lone setback against five SU wins was a 53-46 loss to Virginia last Friday in the Battle 4 Atlantis championship round. The Badgers closed as four-point underdogs and it was the first time they failed to cover in their last five games. Their biggest SU win of the season came against Xavier on Nov. 13 in a 77-68 victory as slight two-point underdogs. Wisconsin is averaging 74.0 points per game while allowing just 57.8 PPG at the other end of the court.

Betting Trends

--The Wolfpack have failed to cover in 20 of their last 27 road games and they are 3-8 ATS in their last 11 games against the Big Ten.

--The Badgers are 18-8 ATS in their last 26 games against an ACC team and the total has stayed UNDER in five of their last six games.

--Wisconsin has won the previous two meetings both SU and ATS with the total evenly split at 1-1.

Indiana Hoosiers at No. 3 Duke Blue Devils (ESPN, 9:30 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: Duke -13 ?, Total 155

Betting Matchup

Indiana faced Duke at home in last season?s ACC/Big Ten Challenge as 8 ?-point underdogs and it went onto lose 91-81. Heading into this season?s matchup, the Hoosiers are off to a solid 5-1 start straight-up. However, they have failed to cover against the spread in their last three games, including a 73-72 road loss to Arkansas as 3 ?-point favorites. All five wins have come on their home court.

The Blue Devils quickly moved to No. 1 in the nation with an impressive 118-84 victory against Kentucky as two-point underdogs in their season opener. They dropped a few spots in the latest AP Top 25 with last Wednesday?s 89-87 loss to Gonzaga as eight-point favorites. Duke has averaged 91.8 points per game in its SU 5-1 start. It has gone an even 3-3 ATS with the total staying UNDER in four of the six games.

Betting Trends

--The Hoosiers are 1-4 ATS in their last five ACC games and the total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in eight of their last nine road games.

--The Blue Devils have covered the spread in nine of their last 11 games against a team from the Big Ten and the total has stayed UNDER in 12 of their last 16 home games.

--The road team in this matchup has covered ATS in four of the last five meetings with the total going OVER in three of those five games.

Michigan gets two big tests this week
November 27, 2018
By The Associated Press

Michigan's follow-up to its national championship game appearance has been impressive so far. Despite losing three key players, the defensive-minded Wolverines have yet to lose this season and blew out then-No. 8 Villanova in a title-game rematch.

Two big tests come this week.

The seventh-ranked Wolverines (6-0) start the week with a prime time, marquee match-up against No. 11 North Carolina on Wednesday in Ann Arbor. Three days later, Michigan opens the early Big Ten season against No. 19 Purdue and preseason All-American guard Carsen Edwards.

''I don't think we're this juggernaut. We're just OK,'' Michigan coach John Beilein said following an 83-55 win over Chattanooga last week. ''No matter what happens next week, we're going to keep growing and trying to get better.''

It's gone pretty well so far.

Michigan lost Moe Wagner, Duncan Robinson and Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman, leaving the Wolverines without three of their top four scorers from last year's team. But the Wolverines still play with a defensive fervor few teams can match and have allowed one team - George Washington - to eclipse 60 points this season.

It's still early in the season, but Michigan leads the nation in scoring defense, allowing 48.3 points per game, and its closest win was by 19 points.

The Tar Heels are loaded again this year with preseason All-American forward Luke Maye, Cameron Johnson and Kenny Williams back, playing alongside one of Roy Williams' best recruiting classes in Chapel Hill. North Carolina (6-1) suffered its first loss of the season to Texas in the Las Vegas Invitational, but bounced back by rolling over UCLA in the consolation game.

The Boilermakers (5-1) got huge news during the offseason. Edwards opted to return instead of leaving for the NBA and he hasn't disappointed, leading Purdue with 25.3 points per game while shooting 46 percent. Purdue's only loss came to No. 13 Virginia Tech. The Boilermakers play No. 15 Florida State on Wednesday before heading to Ann Arbor.

Get through this week with two wins and Michigan will be more than OK.

ZAGS AT NO. 1

Gonzaga (6-0) leapfrogged No. 2 Kansas to take over the top spot in this week's AP Top 25 following a rousing victory over former No. 1 Duke in the Maui Invitational title game.

Playing without forward Killian Tillie, one of their best players, the Zags relied on their experience and defense down the stretch to beat the Blue Devils and earn the program's third No. 1 ranking.

Gonzaga rolled over North Dakota State 102-60 on Monday and has what could be a tough road game against Creighton on Saturday. The Bulldogs also will be without Geno Crandall after the reserve guard fractured his right hand during practice on Sunday.

RANKED VS RANKED

Holiday tournament week is typically filled with multiple games between marquee programs and this year was no different.

The week after the holiday tournaments includes just a handful of games between ranked teams.

No. 4 Virginia gets a big test after winning the Battle 4 Atlantis title in the Bahamas, playing at No. 24 Maryland on Wednesday.

The tough Big Ten has another match-up of ranked teams on Friday, when No. 22 Wisconsin plays at No. 14 Iowa.

ROAD BULLS

Buffalo pulled off a massive upset in last year's NCAA Tournament, knocking off Arizona as a No. 13 seed. The Bulls are a popular pick to have some more mid-major magic with five of their top six scorers back.

Buffalo, up to No. 22 in this week's AP Top 25, opened the season with five straight wins and this week will play in Northern Ireland at the Belfast Hall of Fame Classic.

The Bulls open against Milwaukee at the SSE Arena on Friday, then play Stephen F. Austin or San Francisco on Sunday.

WATCH LIST

Arizona State (5-1) just missed being ranked for the first time this season, finishing five points behind No. 25 Mississippi State in this week's poll despite beating the Bulldogs on the way to the MGM Main Event title. The Sun Devils play Omaha on Wednesday and Texas Southern on Saturday, both at home.

Keep an eye on Furman. The Paladins (7-0) have never been ranked in the AP poll, but were right behind Arizona State and Clemson among teams getting votes this week.

Furman is off to its best start as a program and has notched wins over two of last season's Final Four teams, beating Loyola-Chicago and national champion Villanova. The Paladins play Western Carolina on Saturday and could move into the poll if a few teams ahead of them falter.

NCAA Preview - Michigan State at Louisville

The Michigan State Spartans visit the Louisville Cardinals on Tuesday night in a game that can be seen on ESPN. The Spartans come into this game at 5-1 SU and 4-2 ATS, while the Cardinals are 3-2 SU and 2-2-1 ATS.

The Spartans have played some tough opponents already this season including Kansas, Texas and UCLA. The Cardinals won their first three games of the season, but then suffered losses to Tennessee and Marquette. Let?s look at Michigan State at Louisville and college basketball picks.

Michigan State at Louisville
Date and Time: Tuesday, November 27, 2018, 7:30 p.m. ET
Location: KFC Yum Center, Louisville, KY
College Basketball Odds at BetDSI: Michigan State -5, O/U 153.5
Michigan State vs. Louisville TV Coverage: ESPN

This is one of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge matchups and it should be a good one on Tuesday night. Michigan State is one of the top 15 teams in the country, while Louisville has been better than expected. The Cardinals played well in last week?s NIT Season Tip-Off, as they played Tennessee tough for a while and then lost in overtime to Marquette. Both Michigan State and Louisville played in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge a year ago and it was Michigan State beating Notre Dame, while Louisville lost to Purdue.

Michigan State is averaging almost 90 points per game, while giving up about 67 per contest. They have actually gone under in four of their six games. Michigan State has been led by their backcourt duo of Cassius Winston and Joshua Langford who have combined to average 36.5 points per game this season.

The Cardinals have a young squad that goes 10 deep and no player has been averaging more than 28 minutes per game. Louisville is averaging about 86 points per game and giving up 75 per contest. They have gone over in four of their five games this season.

Matchup to Watch

The Cardinals are led in scoring by Jordan Nwora who is averaging 18.4 points and 7 rebounds per game. The Spartans figure to put Kenny Goins on him, although Michigan State really doesn?t have a great choice to defend Nwora. Goins is probably the most capable defender, as Nick Ward isn?t that great on defense and the freshmen, Gabe Brown and Thomas Kithier are not up to the task. It should be Goins against Nwora with Xavier Tillman spelling him. If Michigan State can?t find an answer for Nwora they will have trouble on Tuesday night.

Key Stats

The road team is 4-0 ATS in the last 4 meetings in this series. The Spartans are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games. The Spartans are 3-8-1 ATS in their last 12 road games. The Cardinals are 8-3-1 ATS in their last 12 vs. the Big Ten.

Looking at the total, the Under is 4-0 in the Spartans last 4 overall. The Under is 4-1 in the Spartans last 5 road games. The Over is 8-2 in the Spartans last 10 vs. the ACC. The Over is 4-1 in the Cardinals last 5 overall. The Over is 4-1 in the Cardinals last 5 home games.

Michigan State vs. Louisville Free Picks

Michigan State is a good team, but this one is on the road and it won?t be easy, as Louisville is better than expected. The Cardinals gained a lot of great experience playing in the NIT Tip-Off and they looked like they belonged. I am tempted to take Louisville, as I expect them to be listed as a home dog in this contest.

I think the better choice in this game is the total. I know that Michigan State has gone under in four of their six games, but that was due to their opponent?s lack of scoring. Louisville is very capable of running up and down the court with Michigan State. Neither of these teams is that great defensively and both have shown early in the season that they can score a lot of points. I expect a high scoring game on Tuesday night that goes over the total at BetDSI.

Michigan State vs. Louisville ATS Pick: Over 153.5
Michigan State vs. Louisville Score Prediction: Louisville 82, Michigan State 80

Wednesday?s 2nd list of 13: Catching up on college hoop

If you spent all of November watching football and you missed the start of college basketball season, here is some of what you missed??.

13) Gonzaga 89, Duke 87? Finals of Maui Classic was a terrific game; Duke led 2-0, but that was it- they were down by 16 with 15:54 left, before tying game late. Zags made 10-19 on the arc, and they were playing without Tillie, who made 47.9% of his 3?s last year.

12) Virginia 53, Wisconsin 46? Predictably slow-paced game (58 possessions) in final of the Battle for Atlantis. Teams combined to go 6-28 on arc; Badgers only got to foul line three times and forced only five turnovers (-8). If you bet the under, this was a rocking chair game.

11) Kansas 87, Tennessee 81 OT? Vols start three seniors, two juniors, led by 8 early in 2nd half, but three Jayhawks played 40:00+ in this OT thriller. Kansas made 44% of its 3?s in its 5-0 start. Tennessee is #36 experience team, Kansas #283.

10) Virginia Tech 89, Purdue 83? Finals of Charleston tourney elevated Hokies into the top 25, which they may have floundered by losing at Penn State last night. Tech outscored Purdue 19-7 on foul line. Both teams made over 40% of their 3?s.

9) Duke 118, Kentucky 84? Result like this in a season opener distorted everyone?s view of the season; did Duke become a little overrated because they played so well in this game? If you?re John Calipari, how do you restore the young Wildcats? confidence- they were down 91-54 at one point.

8) Louisville 82, Michigan State 78 OT? Chris Mack has a tough job, following Rick Pitino at a place where the fanbase isn?t exactly patient, but this win gets him off on the right foot.

7) San Diego 70, Colorado 64? Toreros are #6 experience team in America; they?re 5-1 with a 3-point loss at Washington. The middle of the WCC is better this season than it has been for a few years. San Diego starts four seniors, so this is a big year for them.

6) Buffalo 99, West Virginia 94 OT? Bob Huggins has young guards this year, which isn?t a good thing, but Buffalo is really good and should dominate the MAC. Bulls were down 69-56 with 8:05 left in regulation, but they forced 19 turnovers (+8) and got a great road win.

5) UConn 83, Syracuse 76? Orangemen don?t leave home before Christmas too much; they made only 23.3% of their 3?s in their first five games. This was Danny Hurley?s first statement win as the new UConn coach, coming in New York City, where it was like an old Big East conference tournament game.

4) Michigan 73, Villanova 46? Wildcats graduated four guys from LY?s national champs, and Michigan took its frustrations out for losing the national title game to Villanova eight months ago- this game was 49-17 at one point. Another early season brickfest, with teams combining to make only 8-32 on the arc.

3) Ohio State 64, Cincinnati 56? Good road win for Buckeyes squad that is experience team #281, while Cincy is #131 in experience. OSU led 55-39 with 5:23 left, before Bearcats made a late run but fell short. Buckeyes also have a road win at Creighton already.

2) Seton Hall 83, Miami 81? Finals of Wooden Legacy tournament in Fullerton; when they announce the Field of 68 in March, games like this will carry some weight, even though it was played almost four months before Selection Sunday. Pirates are #233 experience team; this is a great win for them.

1) Texas 92, North Carolina 89? Longhorns look to be improved this year, after going 30-37 the last two years. Texas lost to Michigan State the next night, but they?ve got this win and a neutral court win over Arkansas- the #256 experience Longhorns hope to be a factor in March.

Wednesday?s List of 13: College basketball knowledge??.

13) Top four rated conferences so far this season:

Big X, Big 14, ACC and the Big East.

12) Teams with least experience in country, among teams in the betting rotation:

Kentucky, UCLA, Cal State-Northridge, Maryland, Chattanooga and Duke

One of those six teams has a lot more talent than the other five.

11) Minutes Continuity measures how much guys have played together more than their experience- teams cobbled together by transfers are rated low in this metric:

Highest: Washington, Kansas State, Brown, Cal State-Fullerton, George Mason

Lowest: Tex-Arlington, Chattanooga, Idaho, Wichita State, Oakland

10) Teams who used their bench the most so far this year:
Denver, Manhattan, Georgia, Princeton, NC State

Teams who used their bench the least:
San Diego, Furman, Georgia State, St John?s, Boston College

9) Challengers to Gonzaga?s dynasty in the WCC are changing a little. St Mary?s is only 3-3 to start the season, but San Francisco and LMU are both still unbeaten. Conference seems to be a little deeper this season; BYU is still pretty good and San Diego seems improved, too.

8) Mike Davis is the guy who replaced Bob Knight as the basketball coach at Indiana, which was an enormous job for a rookie coach. That was 18 years ago.

18 years and three jobs later (he has won at all his coaching stops) Davis is now the coach at Detroit Mercy in the Horizon League. His son Antone is a freshman for the Titans, and the kid can shoot a basketball- he?s made 24 of his last 38 3-point shots.

Horizon League has slipped of late (ranked #24 LY, were as high as #10 in 2011) and Davis got this job because the Titans are 16-47 the last five years. Detroit?s last winning season was in 2013, when their best player was the then-coach?s son (Ray McCallum Jr).

Detroit starts young Davis and four seniors, so they?ll be an interesting follow this winter. They also have five true freshmen, six JC transfers and two graduate transfers.

7) Rough start to the season for the Pac-12; Oregon is their highest-rated team, but the Ducks lost at home to Texas Southern Monday, as a 24-point favorite. Not looking good right now for the Pac-12 to get a lot of at-large spots in the NCAA?s.

6) Texas Southern uses November/December to fund its program, playing a ridiculous number of road games for guarantee fees. Here is who they?ve played so far:

Nov 6, won 72-69 at Baylor
Nov 10, lost 104-67 at Gonzaga
Nov 12, lost 85-73 at Iowa State
Nov 14, lost 103-64 at San Diego State
Nov 18, lost 85-63 at Evansville
Nov 26, won 89-84 at Oregon

Their first Division I home game is January 19th. January freakin? 19th.

5) Teams who have taken the highest % of 3-point shots:
Drake, Eastern Washington, Villanova, Siena, North Dakota State

4) Teams who have made the highest % of 3-point shots:
Indiana State, New Mexico, Detroit, South Dakota State, Creighton

3) Teams playing the fastest tempos so far this season:
FIU, Marshall, Eastern Kentucky, Citadel, Rider, Green Bay

Teams playing slowest tempo so far this season:
Virginia, Siena, Marist, Wisconsin, Cincinnati, Houston

2) As of Monday night, there were still 15 kids in the country who?ve taken 2+ foul shots per game and made all of them, led by Oakland?s Jaevin Cumberland, at 26-26.

1) Oakland?s Braden Norris was leading the country in 3-point %age, making 12 of his 14 shots behind the arc. Ian Sistare of Dartmouth was next, at 11-14.
