Friday's Tip Sheet
December 15, 2017

Game of the Night: Spurs at Rockets ? 9:35 PM EST

The top two teams not only in Texas but also in the Southwest division meet up at the Toyota Center for the first time this season. Houston (22-4 SU, 14-11-1 ATS) is riding an 11-game winning streak following Wednesday?s 108-96 victory over Charlotte as 12-point home favorites. Chris Paul paced the Rockets with 30 points and 11 assists, as Houston improved to an impressive 12-0 with the All-Star point guard in the lineup.

The Spurs (19-9 SU, 14-13-1 ATS) look to rebound after getting tripped up by another Lone Star State rival on Tuesday in a 95-89 setback at Dallas. Kawhi Leonard made his season debut after missing the first 27 games with a quad injury as last season?s MVP finalist scored 13 points in 16 minutes of action. Gregg Popovich?s squad moved to 11-2 this season to the UNDER on the road, while being held to less than 100 points for the 10th time away from AT&T Center this season.

San Antonio knocked out Houston in six games of the Western Conference semifinals last season, including the series clincher at the Toyota Center by 39 points. The Spurs captured four of five meetings at Houston, while posting a 7-3 mark against the Rockets in 10 matchups from the regular season and playoffs in 2016-17.

Great Expectations

The Thunder (13-14 SU, 9-18 ATS) ended a nine-game ATS slide in Wednesday?s 100-95 triumph over the Pacers in Paul George?s return to Indiana. OKC covered for the first time as a favorite since November 15 against Chicago, as the Thunder improved to 5-2 in the past seven games to creep closer to the .500 mark. The Thunder continue a three-game road trip in Philadelphia, seeking consecutive away victories for only the second time this season.

The 76ers (14-13 SU, 16-10-1 ATS) put a halt to a four-game skid in Wednesday?s 118-112 overtime victory at Minnesota as five-point underdogs. Rookie standout Ben Simmons was limited to eight points in 40 minutes of action, but Joel Embiid registered a 28-point, 12-rebound effort to end a three-game losing streak against Western Conference opponents. Philadelphia has slipped to a 1-4 ATS record in its past five home contests, while looking for its first win over OKC since 2008, a span of 16 consecutive losses.

Sounds of Silence

Utah (13-15 SU, 15-13 ATS) was finally getting things on the right track following a six-game winning streak, capped off by a 116-69 blowout of Washington on December 4. The Jazz haven?t won since that rout as Quin Snyder?s club is riding a four-game skid, including a 103-100 setback at Chicago on Wednesday less than a month after destroying the Bulls by 30 points at home. Utah travels to Boston as the next six games for the Jazz come against playoff teams from last season (Celtics, Cavaliers, Rockets, Thunder twice, Spurs).

This was supposed to be the first time Gordon Hayward faced off against his former team, but the Celtics? forward suffered a devastating leg injury in the season opener at Cleveland. Boston (24-6 SU, 20-8-2 ATS) hasn?t skipped a beat with Hayward sidelined as the Celtics are in control of the Atlantic division, while holding off Denver on Wednesday, 124-118 as six-point favorites. The C?s have owned the Jazz recently by winning eight of the last 10 meetings since 2012, including each of the past five matchups at TD Garden.

Central Clash

The Pistons (15-13 SU, 17-9-2 ATS) ended their seven-game losing streak in Thursday?s 105-91 triumph at Atlanta to easily cash as 4 ?-point favorites. Detroit heads to Indiana looking to improve on a 3-2 record with no rest, while splitting a pair of matchups with the Pacers this season as each squad has won at home. The Pistons own a solid 8-2-1 ATS mark as a road underdog, but one of those two defeats came at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in mid-November, 107-100 as 1 ?-point ?dogs.

The Pacers (16-12 SU, 17-11 ATS) put together a furious rally against Oklahoma City on Wednesday after trailing by double-digits, but fell short in a 100-95 loss to see their four-game winning streak snapped. Indiana?s six-game homestand finishes up tonight as the Pacers seek a 4-0 record at home against Central division foes. Nate McMillan?s squad has won all seven games this season when listed in the home favorite role, while covering six times.

Clipper Comeback

Following a 4-0 start to the season, the Clippers (11-15 SU, 12-14 ATS) dropped 15 of their next 19 games and Blake Griffin suffered a knee injury that will keep sidelined indefinitely. However, Los Angeles has suddenly won three straight games, as this hot streak began in last Saturday?s 113-112 triumph over Washington as two-point underdogs. Now, the Clippers and Wizards hook up for the second time in less than a week, this time at Capital One Arena where Los Angeles has dropped two of the past three visits.

The Wizards (15-13 SU, 14-14 ATS) returned home from a five-game road swing to hold off the Grizzlies on Wednesday, 93-87 as 7 ?-point favorites. John Wall returned to the Washington lineup after missing nine games with a knee injury as the All-Star guard scored 13 points, but the Wizards own a 3-7 ATS home record when Wall is active. Since November 17, Washington has slipped to a 1-5 ATS mark as a favorite, including a 1-4 ATS ledger this season at home against Western Conference foes.

Unbelievea-Bulls

Don?t look now, but Chicago (7-20 SU, 14-12-1 ATS) is surging. Granted, the Bulls aren?t a threat for the postseason, but Fred Hoiberg?s club has won four straight games, while covering in each of their past five. Chicago took care of Utah as home underdogs on Wednesday to sweep a three-game homestand with all three victories coming in the ?dog role. The Bulls make the short trip to Milwaukee, as Chicago dropped three of four meetings to its Central division rival last season.

The Bucks (15-11 SU, 10-12-4 ATS) look to rebound following Wednesday?s seven-point setback at New Orleans, as Jason Kidd?s squad has won seven of their past eight contests at BMO Harris Bradley Center. Milwaukee has won and covered in each of its previous three opportunities off a road loss, while the Bucks are laying their biggest number to the Bulls tonight (8) since being listed as a seven-point favorite back in November 2002.

Fast Break

-- Miami and Charlotte meet for the second time this month after the Heat rallied past the Hornets two weeks ago, 105-100. The Heat have captured five of the past seven matchups, while the Hornets have lost four of their previous five home games overall.

-- The Blazers rallied from a 16-point deficit in Wednesday?s win at Miami as Portland makes the short trip to Orlando. Portland defeated Orlando at the Moda Center last month, 99-94, but the Blazers have lost four of their past five visits to Amway Center. The Magic has failed to cover in five straight games, while dropping three in a row overall.

-- The Nets head north of the border following a seven-point home loss to the Knicks on Thursday. Brooklyn lost all four matchups with Toronto last season, while going 0-8 SU and 2-6 ATS in the past eight meetings. The Raptors are riding a 7-1 run, but return home from a four-game road trip after edging Phoenix on Wednesday.

-- Atlanta and Memphis have been perennial playoff teams over the last five years, but the two teams have combined for just 14 wins this season. The Grizzlies have lost 15 of their past 16 games, including 11 of their previous 12 at FedEx Forum. The road team won each matchup last season, while the Hawks own a dreadful 0-6 record with no rest following Thursday?s home defeat to the Pistons.

-- New Orleans and Denver have split a pair of high-scoring games this season with the Pelicans knocking off the Nuggets nine days ago, 123-114. The Nuggets are back at home following a six-game road swing, as Denver posted a 2-4 SU and 2-3-1 ATS mark. New Orleans has compiled an impressive 7-3 ATS record in its previous 10 away contests, including consecutive covers as underdogs at Houston and Portland.

Friday NBA Best Bet
Oklahoma City Thunder vs. Philadelphia 76ers

NBA bettors have a full slate of games to work with tonight as there are 11 games on tap and some big ones to boot. San Antonio in Houston as the nationally televised nightcap is going to attract plenty of eyeballs, but other games like Utah/Boston and LAC/Washington ? which is a rematch of a game last week which L.A won 113-112 ? are just as intriguing in their own way.

However, it's the first game on ESPN's Friday night double-header that has caught my eye as we've got Oklahoma City in Philadelphia to take on ?The Process.?

Philadelphia (-1); Total set at 212.5

Both of these teams are coming off hard-fought wins in their last outings, as OKC was able to topple the Pacers in Paul George's return to Indiana, while Philadelphia was able to get an OT win in Minnesota against the Timberwolves. Each have had at least a day off since then leading up ton tonight so fatigue won't be a big concern, and given a tight point spread slightly in favor of Philadelphia winning tonight, oddsmakers expect a close game. I'm inclined to agree with them there and I don't really see much value on either team in terms of playing the side.

But this total of 212.5 ? which has been bet up since opening around 210.5 late yesterday ? has gotten to the point where this number is much too high, especially for an OKC game. The Thunder have had scoring issues all year long as George, Carmelo Anthony, and Russell Westbrook continue to work out the kinks in their new relationship as teammates.

It's because of those big names on the floor that OKC continues to get tagged with slightly inflated totals by oddsmakers (as a way to somewhat cover their ass) but the 101.7 points the Thunder average per game suggests that anything around 210 or more is probably a shade too high.

Obviously some of that has to do with the Thunder's opponent on a particular night, and while Philly is 6th in the league with a 108.6 points per game average, the only Top 3 defensive team they've faced this year (San Antonio, Boston, OKC) has been the Celtics (twice), and each time the 76ers were held to fewer than 100 points. OKC's play on defense has been what's kept them afloat so far this year and I expect it to be their calling card again tonight.

Furthermore, OKC has been lined with a total of 210 or higher 12 times so far this year and their O/U record in those games sits at 4-8 O/U. A 12-game sample size isn't huge by any means, but to have the 'under' hit at a 2-1 clip in that scenario and have bettors already pushing tonight's line up higher makes this play on the low side of tonight's total quite attractive.

With the Thunder also on a 2-10 O/U run against teams from the East, and a 6-14 O/U run in their last 20 on the road things look even better. Each of OKC's last four trips to Philadelphia have stayed below the posted total, and while this will be the first time they've got Anthony and George in the mix in that scenario, a 7-20 O/U run for the Thunder after scoring in triple digits themselves doesn't bode well for all those bettors pushing this line upwards.

Philly is in a favorable 'under' spot as well as they are 1-5 O/U after scoring 100+ themselves as a scoring outburst by Philly tends to attach a higher number to their next contest. The Sixers are also 1-4 O/U after getting an ATS win last time out, and 8-18-1 O/U at home vs a team with a losing record overall. It sounds funny to say, but OKC does indeed have a losing record at 13-14 SU, something I don't think many would have thought would be the case nearly two months into the season.

Yet, all of it adds up to what should be a lower scoring game tonight as this game probably tops out at that 210 number oddsmakers initially put out on the game.

Best Bet: Under 212.5 points

NBA roundup: Outmanned Jazz jolt Celtics
December 15, 2017

HOUSTON -- Chris Paul delivered an impressive two-way performance and the Houston Rockets rolled to a 124-109, wire-to-wire win over the San Antonio Spurs on Friday night at Toyota Center.

Paul finished with 28 points, eight assists and seven steals as the Rockets, who are unbeaten with Paul in the lineup this season, extended their winning streak to 12 games in large part courtesy of an early 3-point barrage.

All five Rockets starters scored in double figures, with James Harden adding 28 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Clint Capela (18 points, 10 rebounds) and Ryan Anderson (12 points, 10 rebounds) had double-doubles for the Rockets, who are 13-0 with Paul in the lineup.

The Spurs pulled their starters in the third quarter, with LaMarcus Aldridge (16 points) leading that group with just 27 minutes. Kawhi Leonard, playing in just his second game after a quad injury, did not play after the break after scoring 12 points in the first half.

Nuggets 117, Pelicans 111 (OT)

DENVER -- Will Barton scored 11 of his 19 points in overtime in his return to the lineup, and Denver rallied from 18 points down to beat New Orleans.

Gary Harris had 21 points, Trey Lyles scored 14 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter and Nikola Jokic had 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Nuggets in his first game back after missing seven with a sprained left ankle.

DeMarcus Cousins scored 29 points, Anthony Davis had 28 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks, and Jrue Holiday scored 25 points for the Pelicans.

Thunder 119, 76ers 117 (3OT)

PHILADELPHIA -- Russell Westbrook registered 27 points, 17 rebounds and 15 assists and Oklahoma City outlasted Philadelphia in three overtimes.

Westbrook shot 10 of 33 yet managed to notch his 10th triple-double of the season and the 89th of his career. Paul George and Carmelo Anthony scored 24 points apiece for the Thunder, who earned their third straight road win. It was also their 17th consecutive win over the Sixers.

Joel Embiid led the Sixers with 34 points while playing a career-high 48 minutes. J.J. Redick scored 19 points and Dario Saric added 16. Jerryd Bayless had 14 points and Ben Simmons had 12 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds.

Jazz 107, Celtics 95

BOSTON -- Utah lost two starters to injury in the first half but ended a four-game losing streak by stunning Boston.

Utah starters Rudy Gobert (knee) and Derrick Favors (left eye laceration, six stitches) left the game, with Gobert departing before it was two minutes old.

Ricky Rubio had 22 points, seven rebounds and five assists, and rookie Donovan Mitchell scored eight straight points for his team late and finished with 17 points, nine assists and six rebounds.

Kyrie Irving had 33 points, six assists and four rebounds for Boston. Al Horford, who returned from a one-game absence with a sore knee, added 21 points, seven assists and six rebounds.

Wizards 100, Clippers 91

WASHINGTON -- Mike Scott matched his season high with 22 points off the bench and Bradley Beal had 20 points and 11 rebounds as Washington overcame its latest uneven performance by beating Los Angeles.

John Wall had 15 points in 29 minutes in his second consecutive game after sitting out nine in a row following injections in his knee to help with inflammation. Scott sank 9 of 10 shots from the field.

Lou Williams had 23 points and Jawun Evans scored 15 for the Clippers. Los Angeles had won three in a row, starting with a 113-112 win over the Wizards on Dec. 9. DeAndre Jordan finished with 12 points and 16 rebounds.

Pistons 104, Pacers 98

INDIANAPOLIS -- Andre Drummond had 23 points and 13 rebounds as Detroit held off Indiana.

The Pacers rallied from a 16-point deficit in the fourth quarter to get within 100-98 in the final two minutes, but the Pistons regrouped as Reggie Jackson hit two key free throws to make it 102-98 with 18.1 seconds remaining. Drummond then blocked Victor Oladipo's step-back 3-point attempt on the next possession to seal the win.

Oladipo led Indiana with 26 points and eight rebounds. Myles Turner had 24 points and eight rebounds.

Heat 104, Hornets 98

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Tyler Johnson and Wayne Ellington came off the bench to score 16 points apiece, and Miami beat Charlotte.

The Heat built a 17-point lead in the fourth quarter and then held off a Charlotte rally in the final six minutes. The Hornets got as close as two in the final two minutes, but Dion Waiters hit a 15-footer with 1:08 left to push the lead to 102-98. Goran Dragic later hit two free throws with 9.0 seconds remaining to push the lead to six.

Waiters finished with 12 points on a night when the Heat shot 50 percent from the field. Josh Richardson, James Johnson, Kelly Olynyk and Bam Adebayo scored 11 points each. Kemba Walker led the Hornets with 25 points. Dwight Howard had 15 points and 16 rebounds.

Raptors 120, Nets 87

TORONTO -- Kyle Lowry posted his 11th career triple-double and DeMar DeRozan scored 31 points as Toronto defeated Brooklyn.

Lowry had 10 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds as the Raptors won their second game in a row and the eighth in their past nine. The Nets lost their second in a row. The Raptors have defeated the Nets in the past nine meetings between the teams.

Serge Ibaka added 18 points and eight rebounds for Toronto, Jonas Valanciunas contributed 14 points and Jakob Poeltl and Norman Powell scored 11 each. Nik Stauskas had 22 points and seven rebounds off the bench for Brooklyn.

Trail Blazers 95, Magic 88

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Damian Lillard scored 21 points and CJ McCollum added 20 as Portland handed Orlando its fourth straight loss.

Al-Farouq Aminu added 15 points as the Trail Blazers swept the season series. Nikola Vucevic led an injury-wrecked Orlando team with 26 points and 14 rebounds, while Jonathon Simmons and D.J. Augustin added 15 and 14 points, respectively.

Aaron Gordon, who returned to the Magic after missing three games with a concussion, had 13 points before leaving the game midway through the fourth quarter with a right calf strain.

Bulls 115, Bucks 109

MILWAUKEE -- Bobby Portis scored 27 points and Chicago extended its winning streak to five games by beating Milwaukee.

Only one of Chicago's starting five failed to score in double figures as Nikola Mirotic added 22, Robin Lopez scored 18 and Kris Dunn finished with 17 for the Bulls, who shot 48.8 percent from the field and made eight of 22 attempts from beyond the arc.

Khris Middleton and Giannis Antetokounmpo led Milwaukee with 29 points apiece but Middleton went 2-for-8 from distance while the Bucks were 9-for-32 as a team despite matching the Bulls by shooting 48 percent overall.

Grizzlies 96, Hawks 94

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Guard Tyreke Evans scored 22 points and made a driving layup with 1:02 left in the fourth quarter to give Memphis the victory over Atlanta.

Marc Gasol (13 points, six rebounds and five assists) scored all his points in the third quarter as the Grizzlies broke a five-game losing streak and won for just the second time in their last 18 games. Atlanta has lost four in a row and six of the last seven games.

Kent Bazemore led Atlanta 19 points, five assists and three steals. Dennis Schroeder had 18 points and 11 assists and Taurean Prince finished with 17 points.

NBA roundup: Knicks spoil Anthony's return to MSG
December 17, 2017

NEW YORK -- Michael Beasley had 30 points on 11-of-18 shooting from the field to lead six New York players in double figures as the Knicks spoiled Carmelo Anthony's return to Madison Square Garden with a 111-96 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Saturday night.

Anthony, who was with the Knicks for nearly seven seasons and ranks as the seventh-leading scorer in franchise history, finished with 12 points -- including zero in the second half -- on 5-of-18 shooting in his first game back in New York since being traded during the offseason for Enes Kanter, Doug McDermott and a second-round draft pick.

Anthony received a mostly warm reception from the MSG crowd during a highlight video played during introductions. While there were loud cheers for Anthony, who averaged nearly 25 points during his nearly seven-year run but had little playoff success, there was also a smattering of boos.

Heat 90, Clippers 85

MIAMI -- Erik Spoelstra became the Miami franchise leader for coaching victories in a win against Los Angeles.

Spoelstra passed current Heat president Pat Riley to set the record with 455 wins. Miami climbed above .500 for the first time in December.

Josh Richardson sank a career-high six 3-points and scored a career-high 28 points to lead the Heat. Clippers center DeAndre Jordan notched a double-double with 12 points and 20 rebounds. He has four consecutive double-doubles -- his longest streak of the season -- and seven double-doubles in his past eight games.

Rockets 115, Bucks 111

HOUSTON -- James Harden scored a game-high 31 points and Chris Paul produced 23 of his 25 points in the second half as Houston extended its winning streak to 13 games with a victory over Milwaukee.

Paul had just two points on 0-of-5 shooting before the intermission but opened the second half by drilling three consecutive 3-pointers. He was just as lethal down the stretch, nailing back-to-back mid-range jumpers off screens to lift the Rockets (24-4) to a seven-point lead with 33.7 seconds left.

Houston improved to 14-0 with Paul in the lineup.

Cavaliers 109, Jazz 100

CLEVELAND -- LeBron James passed Larry Bird for sixth place in career triple-doubles and Cleveland beat Utah.

James' 60th triple-double in 15 seasons included 29 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists. It was his third triple-double in a now-completed four-game homestand -- each game won by the Cavs.

James scored 10 points in the fourth quarter. He was 9 of 15 from the field and 10 of 10 from the free-throw line.

Trail Blazers 93, Hornets 91

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- CJ McCollum scored 25 points and Portland held on for its third straight victory with a win over Charlotte.

The Blazers led by 16 points early in the fourth quarter but had to go back to work after the Hornets fought back to tie at 87 in the final five minutes. Ultimately, Portland held on when Charlotte's Kemba Walker missed a 3-pointer at the final buzzer. The Trail Blazers didn't make a field goal in the final four minutes.

Portland has defeated Miami, Orlando and Charlotte in the last four days on a five-game road trip. They are now 9-5 on the road for the season.

Spurs 98, Mavericks 96

SAN ANTONIO -- Manu Ginobili hit a running left-handed layup with 3.1 seconds to play for the deciding basket as San Antonio scored the game's final 13 points to roar from behind and beat Dallas.

Dallas led just 96-92 after the Spurs' Bryn Forbes poured in 3-pointer from the corner with 2:13 to play.

After a pair of empty possessions from both teams, LaMarcus Aldridge brought the Spurs to within 96-94 on short jumper with 58.6 seconds to play. Aldridge then hit a contested turnaround jumper in the lane with 23.4 seconds remaining to tie the game.

Celtics 102, Grizzlies 93

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- A great first quarter and a solid burst to start the fourth kept Boston from back-to-back embarrassments, coming away with a victory over struggling, but still scrappy, Memphis.

Al Horford and Terry Rozier sparked a 16-0 run at the start of the fourth as the Celtics erased a 73-71 Memphis lead built largely on a third-quarter explosion from Marc Gasol, who had 21 of his game-high 30 points during the stretch.

Kyrie Irving led Boston with 20 points, rookie Jason Tatum had 19 points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots. Horford had 15 points and seven boards, Aron Baynes added 13 points and six rebounds while Marcus Smart scored 11 and Rozier added 10 points off the bench.

Suns 108, Timberwolves 106

MINNEAPOLIS -- Phoenix overcame 27 turnovers to grind out a hard-fought win over Minnesota.

Phoenix helped itself with another dominating performance from its bench. One game after putting up 55 points on the Toronto Raptors, the Suns' reserves outscored Minnesota's bench 69-20, led by 17 points apiece from Dragan Bender and Troy Daniels, Isaiah Canaan's 15 points, and 12 points and a career-high 19 rebounds from Alex Len.

The Suns led 103-98 with 3:33 to play but consecutive baskets by Jimmy Butler, Jeff Teague and Taj Gibson put Minnesota back on top by one with 1:22 to go.

NBA roundup: Bullock, Pistons topple Magic
December 17, 2017

WASHINGTON -- LeBron James registered his fourth triple-double in five games with 20 points, 12 rebounds and 15 assists as the streaking Cleveland Cavaliers beat the Washington Wizards 106-99 on Sunday night.

Kevin Love led the Cavaliers with 25 points, while Jeff Green had 15 points. Cleveland has won 18 of 19 games, including the past five.

Little separated the Eastern Conference contenders for much of the game as the teams were tied at the end of the second and third quarters. James's 3-pointer early in the fourth quarter put the Cavaliers in front for good and sparked an 8-0 run. Green's three-point play capped the surge as Cleveland led 95-89 with 6:55 remaining.

Bradley Beal scored 27 points for the Wizards, who had won two in a row. John Wall had 15 points and 10 rebounds. Washington made 12 3-pointers but finished 9 of 16 on free throws.

Pistons 114, Magic 110

DETROIT -- Reggie Bullock scored a career-high 20 points, and Detroit held off a late surge by undermanned Orlando.

Bullock, who was inserted into the starting lineup four games ago, made 8 of 10 field-goal attempts. His previous scoring high was 17 points last season, also against the Magic.

Tobias Harris, Reggie Jackson and Anthony Tolliver scored 17 points apiece for the Pistons, who have won three straight following a seven-game losing streak. Mario Hezonja scored 28 points to led Orlando, which got 24 points and 14 rebounds from Nikola Vucevic.

Raptors 108, Kings 93

TORONTO -- DeMar DeRozan led a balanced offense with 21 points as Toronto defeated Sacramento.

The Raptors also defeated the Kings last Sunday in Sacramento.

Kyle Lowry scored 16 points and added seven assists and five rebounds for the Raptors, who have won nine of their past 10 games. Garrett Temple and Bogdan Bodganovic each scored 18 points for the Kings.

Pacers 109, Nets 97

NEW YORK -- Victor Oladipo scored 26 points as Indiana beat Brooklyn.

Oladipo led the Pacers in scoring for the 21st time this season and produced his 26th game with at least 20 points. After shooting a combined 35.4 percent (17 of 48) in Indiana's losses to Oklahoma City and Detroit, Oladipo went 9 of 14 on Sunday.

Five Indiana players reached double figures as the Pacers shot 56.6 percent and won for the fifth time in seven games. Allen Crabbe scored 17 points for the Nets.
