NBA roundup: Nuggets end Warriors' 11-game winning streak
December 24, 2017

OAKLAND, Calif. -- The Denver Nuggets limited the Golden State Warriors to 3-for-27 on 3-point shooting Saturday, stunning the defending NBA champions 96-81 on the second night of back-to-backs for both teams.

The loss ended the Warriors' 11-game winning streak on the eve of their showdown with the Cleveland Cavaliers on Christmas Day in a rematch of last season's NBA Finals.

Coming off a tremendous defensive effort in a 102-85 win at Portland on Friday night, the Nuggets were even better less than 24 hours later, harassing Warriors stars Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson into a combined 12-for-38 shooting, including 1-for-15 on 3-pointers.

Gary Harris led five players in double figures with 19 points for the Nuggets, who were thumped 127-108 at home by the Warriors earlier this season when Golden State matched its season-high with 18 3-pointers.

Raptors 102, 76ers 86

TORONTO -- DeMar DeRozan, who scored a career-best 45 points Thursday against the Philadelphia, came back with 29 points in the rematch.

The Raptors have won six in a row and 12 of their past 13 games while the 76ers have lost five in a row and nine of their past 10.

The Raptors are 18-1 against the 76ers since 2013-2014.

Dario Saric scored 17 points for Philadelphia.

Hornets 111, Bucks 106

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Dwight Howard had 21 points and 16 rebounds, and Charlotte salvaged a weekend split against Milwaukee.

The Hornets rallied from an 18-point deficit in the third quarter after the Bucks opened the second half with a 19-2 run to make it 73-55.

The Hornets won thanks to free throws, as they attempted 40 free throws to Milwaukee's 17. Michael Carter-Williams' two free throws with 8.4 seconds left pushed a two-point lead to 107-103 and then Kemba Walker tacked on four more free throws in the final six seconds.

The Bucks were missing Giannis Antetokounmpo, who sat out with soreness in his right knee. Antetokounmpo came into the game as the NBA's second-leading scorer at 29.6.

Pacers 123, Nets 119 (OT)

INDIANAPOLIS-- Victor Oladipo scored 38 points to go with six assists as Indiana snapped a three-game home losing streak.

Myles Turner added 23 points, nine rebounds and six blocks, which ties a career high.

Spencer Dinwiddie led the Nets with 26 points and eight assists, and DeMarre Carroll added 20 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, helping Brooklyn outrebound the Pacers 51-41.

Rondae Hollis-Jefferson finished with 18 points and eight rebounds despite shooting 7 of 18 from the field.

Wizards 130, Magic 103

WASHINGTON -- Mike Scott paced a balanced scoring attack with 18 points and the unpredictable Wizards returned to their winning ways with a rout over Orlando.

Returning home after Friday's stunning 119-84 road debacle against the Brooklyn Nets, the Wizards (18-15) led 72-48 at halftime and pushed the margin to 29 in the second half en route to scoring their most points in any game this season.

Bradley Beal and Otto Porter each scored 17 points while Markieff Morris had 16. John Wall finished with 10 points and 13 assists. Washington has won four of six games.

Elfrid Payton scored a career-high 30 points and added 10 assists for the short-handed Magic, who have lost eight in a row.

Hawks 112, Mavericks 107

ATLANTA -- Guard Dennis Schroder scored 26 of his 33 points in the second half, including 10 in the final five minutes, to help Atlanta win.

Schroder, who didn't play on Friday night because of an ankle injury, matched his season high with 13 field goals and was 4-for-8 on 3 pointers. He added seven assists and three rebounds to help Atlanta break a two-game losing streak and sweep the season series against the Mavericks.

Schroder's 3-pointer with 1:21 left in the game gave Atlanta a 110-107 lead. The Mavericks had a chance to tie when Dirk Nowitzki missed a 3-pointer with 26 seconds remaining.

Celtics 117, Bulls 92

BOSTON -- The Celtics hit Chicago with a 38-point third quarter en route to a blowout of the Bulls that ended Boston's two-game losing streak.

The Celtics led by a point when Jaylen Brown hit a pair of 3-pointers to start and finish a 12-0 run over 2:49 early in the quarter, breaking the game open and sending the Bulls to their second straight loss after seven wins in a row.

The 38 points was a third-quarter high for the Celtics, who avenged a loss suffered in Chicago two weeks earlier.

Kyrie Irving, who didn't play in that first meeting, scored 25 points and dished out seven assists and Brown, who missed the loss in New York with Achilles soreness, scored 20.

Pelicans 109, Heat 94

MIAMI -- Ian Clark scored 19 points to the lead New Orleans over Miami.

Clark shot 7-of-11 from the field and made 5-of-7 3-pointers. DeMarcus Cousins finished with 16 points, seven rebounds and eight assists and Anthony Davis scored 17 points as the Pelicans swept their back-to-back set in Florida games after their win Friday at Orlando.

The Pelicans scored 13 unanswered points and built a 17-point lead midway through the third quarter. Clark's two 3-pointers and Davis' triple keyed the run. Davis' layup with 3:35 remaining capped the surge and gave the Pelicans an 81-64 lead.

Grizzlies 115, Clippers 112

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Guard Tyreke Evans scored 30 points with 11 assists as Memphis hung on to defeat the Los Angeles Clippers.

Trailing by as many as 16 points in the fourth quarter, the Clippers made it a one-possession game with 1:02 left when guard Lou Williams (36 points) hit a 3-pointer.

After Memphis failed to add to their lead, the Clippers had 21.3 seconds to attempt a game-tying shot. But the Grizzlies' defense forced Williams into a bad pass and turnover and the clock expired.

Memphis snapped a three-game losing streak and won for just the third time in the last 22 games. The 115 points marked a season high.

Thunder 103, Jazz 89

SALT LAKE CITY -- Russell Westbrook totaled 27 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists for his 11th triple-double of the season to lead Oklahoma City.

Paul George added 26 points and Carmelo Anthony chipped in 16 points for the Thunder. Oklahoma City beat Utah for the third straight time to win the season series 3-1.

Utah's Donovan Mitchell scored 29 points on 12-of-16 shooting after returning from a two-game absence.

Timberwolves 115, Suns 106

PHOENIX -- Jimmy Butler scored 32 points and Minnesota blew most of a 22-point third-quarter lead before regrouping to beat Phoenix.

Andrew Wiggins had 17 points and Karl-Anthony Towns had 16 points and 14 rebounds for Minnesota, which has won four of the past five games and six of the past eight.

TJ Warren had 24 points and Troy Daniels 18 for Phoenix.

Trail Blazers 95, Lakers 92

LOS ANGELES -- Maurice Harkless scored 13 of his season-high 22 points in the fourth quarter to lift Portland to a victory against the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Trail Blazers have won 14 straight against the Lakers and eight in a row at Staples Center.

Shabazz Napier started in place of injured leading scorer Damian Lillard and scored 21 points, CJ McCollum scored 17 and Zach Collins contributed 11 off the bench for Portland.

Harkless, who came in averaging 4.9 points, grabbed an offensive rebound, put it back while being fouled and made the free throw with 21.4 seconds left to give Portland a 94-92 lead. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope missed two 3-point tries in the final 10 seconds for the Lakers.

Spurs 108, Kings 99

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Being down two of their starters hardly mattered San Antonio against Sacramento.

The Spurs beat Sacramento for the 11th straight time, riding a 29-point, 10-rebound effort from LaMarcus Aldridge, a triple-double from Pau Gasol and terrific guard play.

San Antonio produced 29 assists as a team and committed only eight turnovers.

By doing so, the Spurs survived a night without All-Star forward Kawhi Leonard and starting guard Danny Green. Leonard, who has missed 30 games this season because of right quadriceps tendinopathy, sat out to rest as part of his comeback plan. Green had tightness in his left groin.

NBA notebook: Suns waive James
December 23, 2017

Two weeks after signing a standard contract with the Phoenix Suns, point guard Mike James was waived Saturday.

James was let go to make room for guard Isaiah Canaan, who had been signed to a hardship contract when guard Devin Booker was sidelined with an injury. Canaan has been productive, and with Booker returning soon, Canaan was signed to a contract for the rest of the season.

The 27-year-old James signed a two-way contract in the offseason, and that expired Dec. 6. The next day he was signed to a standard contract, becoming the first two-way signee to get a standard contract.

James averaged 10.4 points and 3.8 assists while playing in 32 games, including 10 starts. But his playing time was reduced when Canaan arrived.

Canaan is averaging 13.0 points, 5.0 assists and 25.0 minutes in his four games with the Suns. He played one game for the Houston Rockets earlier this season.

--An MRI exam conducted on Sacramento Kings guard De'Aaron Fox revealed a partial tear in his right quadriceps muscle, the team announced.

Fox sustained the injury when his knee made contact with Minnesota Timberwolves forward Karl-Anthony Towns' knee in the first quarter of their game on Dec. 14.

Fox will miss the next two weeks and then be re-evaluated.

--The Memphis Grizzlies
announced that they recalled forward Ivan Rabb from the Memphis Hustle of the G League.

Rabb has averaged 15.8 points, 9.9 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.53 blocks and 28.8 minutes in 15 games (13 starts) for the Hustle this season.

Rabb has played in three games for the Grizzlies this season.

--The Los Angeles Lakers announced that they recalled center Ivica Zubac from the South Bay Lakers of the G League.

In seven games with South Bay this season, Zubac has averaged 21.9 points, 9.3 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 2.0 blocks, and is shooting 64.5 percent.

--The Cleveland Cavaliers announced that they recalled center Ante Zizic from the Canton Charge of the G League.

In five games for the Charge this season, Zizic is averaging 17.2 points and 9.4 rebounds in 24.4 minutes. He has also appeared in 11 games with the Cavaliers this season.

--The Charlotte Hornets announced they recalled guard Julyan Stone from the Greensboro Swarm of the G League.

Stone is averaging 1.5 points, 1.5 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 6.3 minutes over four games with the Hornets this season.

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday

Rams 27, Titans 23? On opponents? opening drives this season, Rams forced 8 turnovers on 15 drives, which is an amazing stat. Todd Gurley was a beast in this game; 118 rushing yards, 158 receiving yards, two touchdowns. Rams clinch their first divisional title since 2003.

Tennessee lost its 3rd game in row, is in danger of missing the playoffs for 10th year in a row. Seven of Titans? last nine games were decided by five or less points. If Tennessee loses next week, they could still make it playoffs if Bills/Chargers also lose.

Bengals 26, Lions 17? This loss KO?s Detroit from playoff contention and likely ends the tenure of Jim Caldwell as head coach. Matthew Stafford makes $27M a year; he is now 59-65 as an NFL starter, 0-3 in playoff games. Lions last won a playoff game in 1991.

Chargers 14, Jets 7? Chargers won five of their last six games; they play Oakland next week in what should be a weird game, given how popular the Raiders remain in the LA area. Bolts need a win and also Titans to lose and then either Buffalo or the Ravens to lose to make the playoffs. Under is 9-1 in Chargers? last ten games.

Jets are 11-42 on 3rd down in last three games; they?re 2-8 in their last ten games. Not sure why Christian Hackenberg hasn?t played yet; its similar to the Davis Webb/Giants quandary.

Bears 20, Browns 3? Cleveland is 1-30 the last two years, 3-12 vs spread this year. Browns are -15 in turnovers their last six games. Does this mean Sam Darnold stays at USC? Sounds like he doesn?t want to live near Lake Erie.

Panthers 22, Buccaneers 19? Carolina hadn?t scored an offensive TD all day until they drove 59 yards for the game-winning score with 0:35 left? they?re in the playoffs now, but they can win the division if they win next week and the Saints lose at Tampa Bay. Carolina is +10 in turnovers in its last six games.

Bucs? GM and coach were talking big on Hard Knocks this past summer; but now they?re 4-11 and you wonder if Jon Gruden wants to coach the Bucs again, will they hire him?

Saints 23, Falcons 13? New Orleans is in the playoffs after starting season 0-2; Atlanta can still make playoffs by beating Carolina next week- they won 34-31 in Seattle Nov 20, the game that gives them the tie-breaker over the Seahawks.

This was first time in five years these two divisional rivals split their season series; New Orleans has won seven home games in a row- if they win next week, they?ll get another home game in the first round of the playoffs.

Weird thing about handicapping football; 10 of last 13 Atlanta games stayed under the total. Last year, 12 of 16 Falcon games went over the total. Each season is a separate entity.

Redskins 27, Broncos 11? Denver has to make a move for a franchise QB this winter; they were 1-7 on road this year, 0-4 as road underdogs, with six road losses by 10+ points- they?re -16 in turnovers. Thats a nice way of saying they?re terrible.

Washington is 3-2 in its last five games, can finish .500 if they beat the Giants next week. Going to be lot of QB-related issues this winter; will Redskins keep Cousins? Will Giants get rid of Eli Manning? Who will the Giants hire to be coach and GM? Will Washington keep Jay Gruden?

Chiefs 29, Dolphins 13? Do yourself a favor and find the video of Andy Reid?s post-game press conference; he did it in full Santa Claus garb. It is tremendous.

Chiefs win the AFC West, are 32-15 the last three years- they?re in playoffs for 4th time in last five years, but they also have questions? will they trade Alex Smith to the Browns?

As for Miami, they paid Jay Cutler $10M to come in and go 6-9- they lost six of last eight games, went 2-6 on the road. Dolphins can ruin Buffalo?s season by beating the Bills next week.

Patriots 37, Bills 16? NFL should go to FOX TV?s Mike Pereira, ask him how much he wants to take over the league?s instant replay system and put him in charge of it- that would fix a lot of the indecisiveness that seems to plague the current system.

As for Bills? coach Sean McDermott and other AFC East coaches, their job security is tied to how long Tom Brady decides to play, because as soon as #12 walks, the AFC East becomes a free-for-all. But if the Titans, Bills and Chargers all win next week, then Buffalo misses the playoffs in a tie-breaker with the Chargers, who beat them 54-24 when Nathan Peterman threw five INTs in a half in his first NFL start. Decisions like that are bad for a coach?s job security.

Home teams are 8-1-1 vs spread in AFC East divisional games this season.

49ers 44, Jaguars 33? This was the first game in NFL history with a final score of 44-33; there are media members who already want Jimmy Garoppolo fitted for his gold Hall of Fame jacket. Garoppolo is 6-0 as an NFL starter and the 49ers will be a trendy pick to make the playoffs next year, but at this point, they?re passing tired horses.

Jacksonville clinched the AFC South when the Titans lost; Andrew Catalon on FOX was killing Blake Bortles in the third quarter of this game. Guy QB?s a 10-5 team and is getting crushed on TV. Four of last five Jacksonville games went over the total.

Cardinals 23, Giants 0? Arizona got its first shutout in 25 years, night after the Vikings got their first shutout in 24 years. If I was a Giants fan, I?d want to at least see Davis Webb play, to see if he has any ability, or any potential to at least bring back draft picks in a trade. Quarterbacks are valuable, I?m told.

Cardinals head to Seattle next week with a chance to finish .500; they?re an older team with an older coach? will Arians be back? Will Carson Palmer be back?

Seahawks 21, Cowboys 12? Dallas outgained Seattle 283-136, and lost by nine points. Brutal day for the Cowboys, which didn?t score a TD, then watched kicker Bailey miss two easy FG?s to get margin within a TD in 4th quarter. Last nine times Dallas had the ball, they turned ball over three times, kicked four FG?s, missed two other FG?s. Touchdowns win games.

Seattle needs the Falcons to lose at home to Carolina next week, and then to beat Arizona to make the playoffs. Seahawks have gained a TOTAL of 285 yards the last two weeks- their OL is terrible, but Russell Wilson?s big heart is keeping them alive.

If the playoffs started Christmas morning (they don?t), they would look like this:
AFC: Patriots-Steelers-Jaguars-Chiefs. Wild Cards: Ravens/Titans
NFC: Eagles-Vikings-Saints-Rams. Wild Cards: Panthers/Falcons

NBA Christmas Day quintuple-header betting preview and odds

Philadelphia 76ers at New York Knicks (-2.5, 210)

The New York Knicks hope for another boost from the crowd at Madison Square Garden before beginning a stretch loaded with road games. The Knicks, who are 15-5 at home and 2-10 on the road, host the reeling Philadelphia 76ers in a Christmas Day matchup on Monday.

Following its 52nd game on Christmas (22-29), New York plays 16 of its next 20 on the road, where its woes continued with a 104-101 setback at Detroit on Friday. "We just have to play our game," center Enes Kanter told reporters. "Look at their roster, if they stay healthy, they're going to do really good things. I think they've been way better than what they've been." Kanter was likely referencing the Sixers' issues without star center Joel Embiid, who returned from a three-game layoff but was limited to 14 points in 23 minutes in Saturday's 102-86 loss to Toronto. Philadelphia, which hopes to have Embiid ready for a complete effort on Christmas, has dropped five in a row overall and is 1-7 when its big man sits.

TV: Noon ET, ESPN, NBCSN Philadelphia, MSG (New York)

LINE HISTORY: The Knicks opened as 1.5-point home favoites and that line was bumped up to -2.5. The total hit betting boards at 214 and was dropped all of the way down to 210.

INJURY REPORT:

76ers - SF J. Redick (Questionable, Hamstring), SG F. Korkmaz (Questionable, Foot), SG J. Anderson (Early Jan, Shin), PG M. Fultz (Early Jan, Shoulder).

Knicks - C E. Kanter (Probable, Face), SF T. Hardaway Jr. (Early Jan, Leg).

ABOUT THE 76ERS (14-18 SU, 16-15-1 ATS, 17-15 O/U): Embiid was still bothered by a sore lower back in Saturday's loss and he picked up a technical foul as frustrations began to bubble up."He wants to do so much more and he can't," coach Brett Brown told reporters of Embiid. "He just hasn't practiced or, recently, played. There was a rhythm and a fluid side of his game that he was searching for." Fellow youngster Ben Simmons was held to 10 points on 5-of-13 shooting in the loss, his first outing during the losing streak in which he shot below 50 percent.

ABOUT THE KNICKS (17-15 SU, 19-13 ATS, 16-16 O/U): Although he needed 28 shots to get there, Kristaps Porzingis' 29-point effort in Friday's loss was a positive step for the 7-3 star, who missed two games due to a groin injury before going 0-for-11 from the floor in a win over the Boston Celtics on Thursday. The Knicks were 16-13 before last season's Christmas Day game but a loss on the holiday to the Celtics kicked off a 1-10 swoon, and Porzingis is hoping for a better experience. "Of course, it's always fun to play on Christmas Day," Porzingis told the media. "It's always a big game. I remember last year we were playing against Boston, it was really fun. We lost the game. But it was a good experience. My whole family is here again. They're a young team that's fun to watch and I think we're the same way so it's going to be entertaining."

TRENDS:

* 76ers are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
* Knicks are 13-3 ATS in their last 16 home games.
* Under is 6-1 in 76ers' last 7 games following a straight up loss of more than 10 points.
* Under is 5-1 in Knicks' last 6 vs. NBA Atlantic.
* 76ers are 4-0 ATS in the last 4 meetings.

Cleveland Cavaliers at Golden State Warriors (-5, 219)

The Golden State Warriors will host the Cleveland Cavaliers in an NBA Finals rematch on Christmas Day, but the meeting will be missing some star power. Warriors point guard Stephen Curry is expected to remain out while recovering from an ankle injury and Cavaliers point guard Isaiah Thomas is not quite ready to make his season debut.

Curry missed the last eight games and the team has no plans to rush him back for the marquee matchup. "If we weren't playing Cleveland on Christmas and I told you Steph hasn't even played in a 3-on-3 game, he hasn't had any contact at all and the game is 48 hours from now, you'd say, 'Steph's not going to play," Golden State coach Steve Kerr told reporters on Saturday. "But because it's the magnitude of the game, everybody wants to know, but we can't let that affect our judgement. He can't play. It would be completely irresponsible if he did." Thomas was brought in from the Boston Celtics in the trade that sent away Kyrie Irving over the summer but has been battling a hip injury and will not make a targeted Christmas return. "That was a target for my kids," Thomas told reporters. "So they mad, but I'm fine with it. I have no rhythm, so there is no way I can play in an actual game right now and be very effective like I'm used to being. Slowly that will come back and I'll get a feel for it. I also got to get in some shape."

TV: 3 p.m. ET, ABC

LINE HISTORY: The Warriors opened as 7.5-point home favorites and that number has tilted towards the Cavs, down to -5. The total hit betting boards at 221 and has been reduced to 219.

INJURY REPORT:

Cavaliers - SG J. Smith (Questionable, Knee), PG I. Thomas (Early Jan, Hip), PG D. Rose (Out Indefinitely, Ankle), SG I. Shumpert (Late Jan, Knee).

Warriors - C Z. Pachulia (Questionable, Shoulder), PG S. Livingston (Questionable, Knee), PG S. Curry (Early Jan, Ankle).

ABOUT THE CAVALIERS (24-9 SU, 11-21-1 ATS, 16-16-1 O/U): Cleveland, which fell 4-1 in the NBA Finals to the Warriors last spring in the third straight Finals meeting between the teams, comes in hot with wins in 19 of its last 21 games. The Cavaliers bounced back from a rare loss by edging the Chicago Bulls 115-112 on Thursday behind 34 points, nine assists, six rebounds and three steals from LeBron James. The superstar forward, who averaged 33.6 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists in the Finals last spring, is carrying Cleveland once again by putting up 28.4 points on 57 percent shooting, 9.2 assists and 8.2 rebounds.

ABOUT THE WARRIORS (26-7 SU, 15-18 ATS, 16-17 O/U): Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson have been carrying the load while Golden State battles through a series of injuries but finally hit a cold spell as the team's 11-game winning streak came to a halt with a 96-81 loss to the Denver Nuggets on Saturday. Thompson and Durant combined to go 1-of-15 from 3-point range, and the team shot 3-of-27 from 3-point range. "Sometimes the ball doesn't go in the hole," Kerr told reporters. "Sometimes when the ball doesn't go in the hole, it affects the body language and energy of the guys. We had some good shots early that didn't go in. It just didn't happen for us. But I'm really proud of our guys. Eleven in a row, given all the injuries. It's hell of a streak. We'll flush this one down the toilet and move on."

TRENDS:

* Cavaliers are 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games following a straight up win.
* Warriors are 1-7 ATS in their last 8 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600.
* Over is 6-1 in Cavaliers last 7 vs. NBA Pacific.
* Over is 7-0 in Warriors last 7 games following a straight up loss.
* Over is 4-0 in the last 4 meetings.

Washington Wizards at Boston Celtics (-4.5, 206)

The Washington Wizards and Boston Celtics moved beyond bad losses with blowout wins and both seek to win a second straight contest when they renew a heated rivalry in a Christmas Day affair in Boston. The Celtics followed up a one-point home loss to a depleted Miami Heat squad with a nine-point setback at Madison Square Garden before righting the ship with a 117-92 rout of Chicago on Saturday.

"I thought obviously we looked fresher; we looked like we had our legs under us," Boston coach Brad Stevens told reporters. "We were excited to play coming off those two tough losses. And that's a good basketball team. I mean, and they were really playing at a high level. You could see that in the first half." The Wizards suffered their second-highest margin of defeat at Brooklyn - a 119-84 loss - on Friday before bouncing back at home against the injury-ravaged Orlando Magic. Mike Scott led a balanced attack with 18 points and Washington shot 54.7 en route to the 130-103 triumph. The teams split four heated meetings last season, including one that saw tensions spill into a shouting match in the back hall of TD Garden, and then squared off in a back-and-forth Eastern Conference Semifinals won by the Celtics in seven games.

TV: 5:30 p.m. ET, ABC

LINE HISTORY: The Celtics opened as 4.5-point home favorite and the spread has yet to move off the opening number. The total hit betting boards at 204.5 and has been bumped up slightly to 206.

INJURY REPORT:

Wizards - SG S. Mac (Out For Season, Achilles).

Celtics - PF M. Morris (Probable, Knee), PG S. Larkin (Questionable, Knee), SF G. Hayward (Out Indefinitley, Ankle).

ABOUT THE WIZARDS (18-15 SU, 16-17 ATS, 11-22 O/U): Scott's recent accuracy has been among the most notable aspects of Washington's season, and he rebounded from a rare off night to make 7-of-8 shots - including his one 3-point try - against the Magic. "Healthy, confidence, work on my game a lot," he told reporters when discussing the hottest stretch of his six-year career. "With a lot of repetition comes confidence." Excluding a 3-for-8 effort in the loss to the Nets, Scott is 60-for-80 in a nine-game span while making more than half of his 27 3-point attempts.

ABOUT THE CELTICS (27-9 SU, 22-12-2 ATS, 19-17 O/U): Kyrie Irving and Jaylen Brown scored a combined 45 points and made 9-of-13 3-pointers in Saturday's win. Irving has made 23-of-48 triples over a five-game span and is averaging 28.5 points over his past 11 outings. "I think that's the one thing that gets lost in all the handles and all the different moves and the plays that end up on YouTube, is how ? how skilled he is shooting the ball," Stevens said. "He's just a tremendous shooter. He's got beautiful touch. He doesn't miss when you're just doing shooting without defense. He's an elite shooter. So it doesn't surprise me when he goes on runs. You almost like you take for granted how good he is."

TRENDS:

* Wizards are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games following a straight up win.
* Celtics are 0-6 ATS in their last 6 games following a straight up win.
* Under is 6-1 in Wizards last 7 road games vs. a team with a home winning % of greater than .600.
* Over is 12-3 in Celtics last 15 games playing on 1 days rest.
* Wizards are 0-9 ATS in the last 9 meetings in Boston.

Houston Rockets at Oklahoma City Thunder (+3, 216.5)

The Houston Rockets finally hit a rough patch despite James Harden's historic performances and dropped the last two after winning 14 in a row. Harden will try to post his third straight 50-plus outing and lead the Rockets to a win when they visit the Oklahoma City Thunder on Christmas Day.

Harden became the first player since Kobe Bryant in 207 to reach 50 in back-to-back games when he went for 51 against the Lakers on Wednesday and hit that number again against the Clippers on Friday, but he also joined Wilt Chamberlain as the only players to reach 50 points in consecutive losses. "We lost," Harden told reporters when asked about his historic scoring binge. "It doesn't matter." The Thunder are finally beginning to surge with wins in four straight games as the roles become more clearly defined for their three star players. "We're playing well," forward Paul George told reporters after a 103-89 win at the Utah Jazz on Saturday. "We're playing for one another. Our defense is holding up and offensively we're starting to get a little flow."

TV: 8 p.m. ET, ABC

LINE HISTORY: The Rockets opened as 4-point road favorites and that number has been bet down slightly to 3. The total hit betting boards at 215 and has been bet up to 216.5 as of Christmas Eve.

INJURY REPORT:

Rockets - C C. Capela (Questionable, Heel), PG C. Paul (Doubtful, Hip), SF T. Williams (Out Indefinitely, Knee), PF L. Mbah a Moute (Early Jan, Shoulder).

Thunder - No injuries to report.

ABOUT THE ROCKETS (25-6 SU, 16-14-1 ATS, 17-14 O/U): The last two games were finished without point guard Chris Paul, who left in the fourth quarter on Wednesday with a left adductor strain and sat out Friday. The All-Star is day-to-day and remains questionable for Monday's marquee matchup. "Our aura is not right," Rockets coach Mike D'Antoni told reporters after Friday's setback. "These guys are a little tired. We've got to get guys back. This is an episode, a couple of episodes. The last two games, we just didn't play well enough and without the spirit and all that. Guys are kind of a little dead. Whether it's tiredness or whether they're into themselves a little too much, I don't know. We'll work on it, but obviously it's not good enough."

ABOUT THE THUNDER (18-15 SU, 12-21 ATS, 13-20 O/U): Carmelo Anthony is adjusting to his role playing off the ball and Paul George is turning into a defensive stopper for Oklahoma City, but Russell Westbrook is still running the show. Westbrook is averaging 29.8 points on 59.8 percent shooting with 9.5 assists and nine rebounds during the four-game winning streak, and collected his fifth triple-double of the month in Saturday's win. George showed off his defensive prowess with six steals against the Jazz and has multiple thefts in each of the last seven contests.

TRENDS:

* Rockets are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 road games.
* Thunder are 1-7 ATS in their last 8 home games.
* Over is 7-0 in Rockets last 7 vs. Western Conference.
* Under is 7-0 in Thunder last 7 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600.
* Rockets are 12-3 ATS in the last 15 meetings.

Minnesota Timberwolves at Los Angeles Lakers (+5, 216)

The Los Angeles Lakers dropped five of their last six games, with the losses coming by an average of five points. The Lakers will try to end the mounting frustration over close losses with a win on Christmas Day when they host the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Los Angeles was playing the second night of a back-to-back on Saturday after a 113-106 loss at defending champion Golden State on Friday and missed a pair of 3-point attempts in the final seconds while falling at home 95-92 to Portland on Saturday. "Going in I told the guys we've gotta be ready, we've gotta be professionals," Lakers coach Luke Walton told reporters. "We're gonna be tired. It's our job to be ready. I didn't think we did a good job of that. I thought guys on our bench were pouting. I thought there was too much feeling sorry for ourselves as opposed to being professionals." The Timberwolves are trying to sweep a three-game road trip and earn their fourth consecutive win after knocking off Denver and Phoenix in the first two stops. "Just find ways to win," Minnesota coach Tom Thibodeau told reporters. "This is a tough league. I know everyone says, 'Well, you should win this game, you should win that game.' It doesn't work like that. That's not how the league is."

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, TNT

LINE HISTORY: The T-Wolves opened as 4-point road faves and when it was announced that Lonzo Ball would miss the game the line jumped slightly to 5. The total hit betting boards at 213.5 and has been bumped up significantly to 216.

INJURY REPORT:

Timberwolves - PF N. Bjelica (Questionable, Foot), C J. Patton (Out Indefinitely, Toe).

Lakers - G L. Ball (Out, Shoulder), C B. Lopez (Mid Jan, Ankle).

ABOUT THE TIMBERWOLVES (20-13 SU, 14-17-2 ATS, 18-14-1 O/U): Minnesota's recent winning streak is being sparked by an uptick in production from veteran swingman Jimmy Butler, who is averaging 31.3 points on 54.5 percent shooting over the last three games. "Jimmy Butler," Thibodeau told reporters when asked how his team was able to pull out a 115-106 win at Phoenix on Saturday. "Jimmy Butler was not going to let us lose the game and you can't say enough about what he does for this team. He has changed everything for us." Butler is averaging 26.3 points this month - up from 16.2 in October and 17.9 in November - and the Timberwolves are 7-4 in 11 December games.

ABOUT THE LAKERS (11-20 SU, 16-15 ATS, 16-15 O/U): Los Angeles shot 42.4 percent from the floor in Saturday's loss while ending a seven-game streak of scoring at least 106 points, and rookie Kyle Kuzma finally began to cool off. Kuzma matched Jordan Clarkson with a team-high 18 points but was just 6-of-19 from the floor after averaging 27.5 points on 60.9 percent shooting in the previous four contests. Fellow rookie Lonzo Ball came up two rebounds shy of a triple-double on Saturday but went 4-of-13 from the floor after appearing to break through with a 9-of-16 effort in Friday's setback.

TRENDS:

* Timberwolves are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 road games.
* Lakers are 7-0 ATS in their last 7 games playing on 1 days rest.
* Over is 7-1 in Timberwolves last 8 vs. a team with a losing straight up record.
* Over is 5-1 in Lakers last 6 overall.
* Over is 7-1 in the last 8 meetings.

Inside the Paint - Christmas
December 24, 2017

The NBA holiday schedule tips off early and ends late with five games slated for your betting needs.

Let?s break down the first three contests and hope you and yours have a Merry Christmas!

(Straight Up and Against the Spread)

Philadelphia (14-18 SU, 16-16 ATS) at New York (17-15 SU, 19-13 ATS) - ESPN, 12:00 p.m.

-- BookMaker.eu sent out the Knicks as 1 ?-point favorites on Sunday afternoon and the line was pushed up quickly to 2 ?. The total opened 212 and moved to 211.

-- After starting the season 13-9 and showing a lot of promise, the 76ers have been a complete mess and I hope head coach Brett Brown doesn?t become the fall guy. He?s faced a lot worse adversity since he started coaching the team in 2013 but the squad has dropped five straight games and nine of their last 10 entering Monday?s game.

-- Saturday?s 102-86 loss at Toronto was the worst setback during their current losing streak. Center Joel Embiid returned to the lineup but he only played 23 minutes and finished with 14 points and eight boards.

-- After this game at Madison Square Garden, the 76ers head to the West Coast for a quick three-game road trip.

-- New York has won five of its last seven but is coming off a 104-101 loss to Detroit on Friday as a 6 ?-point road underdog. The road loss to the Pistons shouldn?t come as a surprise knowing the team has struggled all season as visitors (2-10 SU, 4-8 ATS).

-- Fortunately for the Knicks, they haven?t dropped back-to-back games since early December and they?ve been lights out at home (15-5 SU, 15-5 ATS). The 76ers have gone 7-9 SU and 8-8 ATS as visitors.

-- New York has stood tall against its rivals, going 4-2 both SU and ATS in divisional games. Meanwhile, Philadelphia remains winless (0-5) against Atlantic foes albeit the five setbacks came against the Raptors (0-3) and Celtics (0-2).

-- The 76ers haven't played on Christmas since 2001 when they dropped an 88-82 decision at the Los Angeles Lakers. Philadelphia owns an all-time record of 16-13 on the holiday.

-- New York has played on Christmas more than any other team in the NBA, owning a 22-29 record. The Knicks came up short to the Celtics 119-114 in a shootout last season from Madison Square Garden.

-- Monday?s matchup will be the first meeting between the pair this season after they played to four tight encounters in the 2016-17 campaign. They split the series 2-2 and the home team came out on top in each contest but the four games were decided by a combined six points. The 76ers covered all four games and the ?under? went 3-1.

Cleveland (24-9 SU, 11-21-1 ATS) at Golden State (26-7 SU, 15-18 ATS) - ABC, 3:00 p.m.

-- Golden State was sent out as a five-point home favorite over Cleveland with a total of 221. The line has held steady while the total has dipped to 219 ? at BookMaker.eu.

-- This will be the third straight season that the pair will be meeting on Christmas. Cleveland nipped earned a 109-108 last season on the holiday and in the 2015-16 season, Golden State (-6 ?) hung on for an 89-83 win from the Bay Area.

-- Since these teams began their rivalry in 2016 NBA Finals, Golden State has gone 14-8 SU and 12-9-1 ATS against Cleveland which includes an 11-7 record in the postseason. The point-spread has only mattered twice during this span, which occurred when the Cavaliers earned a late push in Game 7 of the Finals last summer and the aforementioned holiday battle two years ago.

-- The Cavaliers are 3-10 SU and 4-8-1 ATS in their last 13 games played at Oracle Arena.

-- Cleveland has been listed as underdog five times this season and it?s been a great investment for bettors, going 4-1 SU and 5-0 ATS.

-- Also, the Cavaliers have been a more sound investment on the road (10-5 SU, 9-6 ATS) but it does enter this game on a 1-5 ATS run over their last six games.

-- Golden State had its 11-game winning streak snapped on Saturday as it was embarrassed 96-81 to the Nuggets as an eight-point home favorite. The Warriors couldn?t buy a shot from the outside, going 3-of-27 (11%) from 3-point land and finishing the game at 38.6 percent from the field.

-- The Warriors haven't dropped back-to-back games this season, the only club to do so. After a loss this season, Golden State has gone 6-0 SU and 3-3 ATS. Offensively, the Warriors have averaged an incredible 132.6 PPG in those games and not surprisingly the 'over' has cashed in all six wins.

-- Stephen Curry (ankle) has missed the last seven games for Golden State and is expected to be reevaluated in another week. The club is 8-2 this season without him in the lineup.

-- The loss to Denver was just the fourth this season (12-4 SU, 7-9 ATS) at home for the Warriors.

-- Not surprisingly, Cleveland (6-2) and Golden State (12-2) both own solid non-conference records. The Cavs have won six straight against the West but five of those wins came at home.

-- VI handicapper Marc Lawrence offered up these angles to watch for the holiday that focus on both the side and total for this particular matchup.

-- Defending NBA Champions have gone 7-9 SU and 5-10-1 ATS since 1999.

-- Of the 24 non-conference clashes played on Dec. 25 since 1991 involving Eastern and Western Conference foes, these matchups have watched the 'under' go 18-5-1 which includes a 1-1 mark last season.

Washington (18-15 SU, 16-17 ATS) at Boston (27-9 SU, 22-12-2 ATS) - ABC, 5:30 p.m.

-- These teams met in the second round of the playoffs last season and Boston captured the series in seven games. The home team won all of the games and six of the seven were decided by double digits as the host averaged 117 PPG, which helped produce a 5-2 ?over? record.

-- BookMaker.eu opened Boston as a 4 ?-point home favorite with a total of 204 ? but that number was pushed up quickly to 206.

-- Washington is coming off its best offensive performance of the season on Saturday as it posted a 130-103 victory over Orland as a 12-point home favorite.

-- Make a note that the Wizards are just 2-7 in their last nine games following a win.

-- Scott Brooks and his troops haven?t been terrible on the road (8-9 SU, 10-7 ATS) this season but they enter this game with a 0-3 mark in their last three away and the setbacks came to the Nets twice and Clippers.

-- Playing up and down to their opponent has been a common theme this season for Washington, who is 9-6 against winning clubs but 9-9 versus teams at .500 or below.

-- Boston is a winning club but its hit a reality check recently. The Celtics started the season 22-4 but are just 5-5 over their last 10 games.

-- They even dropped back-to-back games this past week, which was the first time this season since they began 0-2. Fortunately for the C?s, they avoided the three-game slide with an impressive 117-92 win on Saturday against a surging Chicago club.

-- Including that result, Boston has gone 14-4 SU and 10-6-2 ATS at TD Garden this season. Just before beating the Bulls, they dropped home games to the Jazz (107-95) and Heat (90-89).

-- Even though these teams played to a bunch ?over? tickets in the playoffs last season, both squads are much better defensively this season. Boston (98.2 PPG) is ranked second in scoring defense and Washington is sitting in 12th (103.6 PPG), which is an improvement from 21st last season (107.5 PPG).

-- The Wizards have watched the ?under? go 22-11 (67%) this season and that includes a 13-4 mark in games played outside of D.C.

-- Boston has gone 13-17 all-time on Christmas but this game at TD Garden will be the first home game played on the holiday for the Celtics. The Wizards haven?t played on the holiday since 2014 and they own a 15-7 mark in franchise history.

Christmas Night Essentials
December 25, 2017

Houston (25-6 SU, 16-14-1 ATS) at Oklahoma City (18-15 SU, 11-21-1), TNT, 8 p.m.

Last season?s top two MVP candidates haven?t seen one another yet, but this matchup is about more than Russell Westbrook getting together with former teammate James Harden.

For the Rockets, who continue to sport the league?s best record, this is about preventing what would be their first three-game losing streak of the season. They?ll likely have to get it done without point guard Chris Paul, who exited Wednesday?s loss to the Lakers with a left abductor strain that has him listed as doubtful here. Houston is 15-1 in games he?s appeared in this season.

The Rockets entered last week on a 13-game winning streak and hadn?t lost since welcoming back Paul before falling to both L.A. teams despite James Harden scoring 51 points in each contest. Center Clint Capela, currently on the short list when discussing the NBA?s most improved players, has missed time with a heel strain that has him listed as questionable.

Capela has been one of the game?s most efficient players on both sides of the ball thus far this season, emerging as the x-factor in Houston?s run to the NBA?s best record. Forward Luc Richard Mbah a Moute, a defensive standout who has hit the ground running with his new team, has been out due to a shoulder issue that is expected to sideline him until much later in the week.

OKC is the healthier team in this matchup and has started to get it together, coming into this one 10-3 in December after opening the month with an 8-12 mark. The Thunder?s current four-game winning streak is their longest of the season, coming off the heels of disappointing loss to the Kristaps Porzingis-less Knicks in Carmelo Anthony?s return to Madison Square Garden.

Anthony failed to score in the second half of a 111-96 loss to New York and shot just 5-for-18, continuing a disappointing first season in Oklahoma City that has seen him struggle to fit in with fellow All-Stars Westbrook and Paul George. He was held to just four points and six boards in a 95-94 win over Denver, but has rebounded nicely from those brutal nights against his former teams and is averaging 19.7 points and 4.7 rebounds over the last three games, which includes coming in on a streak of 11-for-22 shooting from 3-point range.

The 10-time All-Star was at one point considered more likely to be on the opposite side here, but discussions for the Knicks to move him to Houston fell apart. The Rockets badly wanted Anthony, courting him unabashedly before he ultimately wound up with the Thunder, who were able to strike a deal by moving Enes Kanter, Doug McDermott and picks.

Although the experiment hasn?t yielded immediate success, Oklahoma City did rout Golden State as a home underdog in the first meeting between the teams and is plenty capable of pulling off another upset win here. Houston is a perfect 3-0 straight up and against the number on Christmas over the past decade, but will have to pull out a road win while short-handed.

The Rockets are favored by 2, but that?s the lowest number they?ve been asked to cover all season. Houston has only been an underdog twice this season. Oklahoma City will be a ?dog for just the fourth time, and only the second time in its home arena, having drilled the Warriors at Chesapeake Energy Arena 108-91 as a 5.5-point underdog on Nov. 22.

The Thunder got Steven Adams back from concussion protocol early last week and are a more physical team without him. The New Zealand native credited his team?s physical defense with making the difference in Oklahoma City?s most recent win, an impressive 103-89 Saturday night rout in Salt Lake City. OKC has been the worst team against the spread for most of the season, but have covered four of its last seven to match a season-best run. These Rockets eliminated the Thunder in five games in last year?s playoffs and have won 13 of the last 17 meeting between these teams.

Minnesota (20-13, 14-17-2) at L.A. Lakers (11-20, 16-15), TNT, 10:30 p.m.

The highlight here revolves around who is calling this game, since TNT?s Inside the NBA A-team will hit the road, leaving their Atlanta-based studio to team up on the broadcast. Ernie Johnson, Charles Barkley, Shaquille O?Neal and Kenny Smith will help add to the broadcast featuring a Timberwolves team that?s off to a good start in looking to make their first playoff appearance since 2004.

The new-look Lakers will be appearing in their 43rd Christmas Day game, second among all teams behind the Knicks. On the slate despite Kobe Bryant?s retirement, L.A. won last year?s date over the Clippers, one of just two victories it enjoyed over 16 December games last season. Timofey Mozgov, now playing for Brooklyn, led the way in producing their 12th win of the season.

The Lakers are in the same boat of looking for win No. 12 on Christmas night, but are in a much better place, personnel-wise. Rookies Lonzo Ball and Kyle Kuzma have tremendous potential, while former No. 2 pick Brandon Ingram has come into his own, averaging 16 points per game.

Of those three cornerstones, only one is certain to play.

Kuzma, the Lakers? leading scorer (17.7), has averaged 27 points in leading the team in that category in each of the past four games, and he?ll have to do the heavy lifting with Ball (shoulder) sidelined and Ingram questionable after missing Saturday night?s 95-92 loss to Portland with a quad injury and tendinitis above his left knee. Starting center Brook Lopez has been absent the last three games due to an ankle sprain and won?t return until early January. Ball will be out for at least a week after feeling his shoulder pop after getting tangled up with Blazers center Jusuf Nurkic. An MRI revealed a sprain.

Rookie second-round pick Jason Hart is likely to start again, as will center Andrew Bogut. Either Larry Nance or Julius Randle should join the frontcourt, while reserve guard Jordan Clarkson is likely to get more minutes given Ball?s absence.

The Timberwolves made their first Staples Center visit of the season a winning one against the Clippers on Dec. 6 and hope to close out what would be a perfect three-game road trip in this matchup, having taken down Denver and Phoenix.

Minnesota nearly blew a 23-point second-quarter lead against the Suns on Saturday but recovered to beat them for the first time in three tries this season. The Wolves will be looking for their first Christmas win ever, falling in their debut 112-100 against the Thunder last year despite Karl-Anthony Towns? 26 points and eight boards.

The Lakers have been a fixture on the Christmas Day schedule despite their struggles late in the Kobe Bryant era. One thing to keep in mind with L.A. is that the under is 9-2-1 in their last dozen games on this holiday and 32-18 overall since ?05.

Head coach Tom Thibodeau hasn?t gotten the results he?s been seeking with his Wolves hovering near the league?s bottom-five in defensive rating, but this could be a good opportunity for him to start turning that around against the banged-up Lakers. Minnesota has seen the over prevail in three straight games and five of its last six. Since Nov. 20, the posted total has been surpassed in 12 of 17 Timberwolves games. They split with the Lakers last season and have lost three in a row to them at Staples, last winning in the 2015-16 opener.

Monday's Best Bet

Monday NBA Best Bet
Cleveland Cavaliers vs Golden State Warriors

While everyone is playing around with their new gifts and gadgets on Christmas morning, NBA bettors know there is no time to get complacent as the annual quintuple-header in the Association takes center stage on Christmas Day.

This year the centerpiece of the five contests is the Finals rematch between Cleveland and Golden State. These two teams have had a loss or two lately, but they looked primed to be on a collision course once again in the NBA Finals. League leaders like Boston and Houston might have something to say about that though and both are in action on Christmas as well, so with the best of the best in action, there will be some great games.

With the eventual NBA Champion playing on Christmas day in each year since 2010 (the Dallas Mavericks weren't involved in action and beat Miami that spring), and every Finals combatant playing on Xmas since then except for the San Antonio Spurs in December 2012 (they would lose to Cleveland that following spring), chances are these two of these 10 teams involved in action will be playing for the game's grandest prize in June, so let's get right to the Best Bet:

Golden State (-4.5); Total set at 221.5

These two teams are no strangers to playing one another on Christmas as this will be the third straight year they do so. All three games have been Finals rematches and just like their meetings in the Finals, these two teams have split the first two meetings on Christmas Day. Golden State won 89-83 back in 2015 to prove their first Championship the previous spring was no fluke, only to see the Cavs come back in the spring of 2016 and win it all.

Last year it was Cleveland's turn to bring home the W on Christmas with a controversial 109-108 victory as they then saw the Warriors rebound and beat them for the title the following spring. If that pattern holds true, then maybe neither team really wants to win this game as they'd much prefer the holding that trophy in June.

(An interesting side note here, not only has the NBA Champion played on Christmas of that year in every season since 2011 Christmas Day, but the eventual NBA champion has also lost SU on Christmas Day in four consecutive seasons).

Both teams won at home and with Golden State being at home for the ?rubber match? taking the +4.5 points with Cleveland on the spread is rather tempting given the history. But it's the total I'm looking to play on here as I think this number is way too high for a game of this magnitude ? especially when Stephen Curry is out ? and we should see a playoff-type feel to this contest.

That 89-83 game in Golden State back in 2015 might be too low of a projection for total points this time around, but the 'under' result should remain the same. The Warriors are coming off an abysmal shooting performance on Saturday night as it's really starting to look like Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson are really getting tired carrying this team amid all the injuries they are currently dealing with.

Outside of those two guys, there really isn't a Warriors player you can trust to score at a high level, and while they did get Draymond Green back on Saturday, asking him to be a leading scorer against the Cavs is a bit much.

Cleveland's own defense hasn't been great in their last two outings and that's a bit of a departure for them when they rattled off 18 wins in 19 games earlier this month. Even with Curry out, Cleveland has plenty of experience coming up short against this team in high-scoring, shootout affairs and will look to bring back sound defensive fundamentals in this game.

The total has either landed on the closing number or stayed below in in nine of Cleveland's last 11 trips to Oakland (2-7-2 O/U), and Cleveland themselves are also on a 2-5 O/U run on the road and a 3-8 O/U run after failing to cover a spread.

With Golden State 1-4 O/U in their last five at home, 2-6 O/U in their last eight overall, and 1-4 O/U in their last five against a team that's won 60% or more of their games, expect to see some defense played in this high-profile contest. The early local start time doesn't do either team any favors either as this game stays well below the number.

Best Bet: Under 221.5 points

The Oversized Stocking Stuffer Preview for NBA Christmas Day

As they do every year, the NBA has wrapped five beautiful presents under the tree for us on Christmas Day, so we?re taking a deep dive on every single matchup to get you ready for what?s going to be an awesome day on the hardwood. The lines are obviously subject to change so check back to BetOnline.ag?s NBA sportsbook on Christmas Eve to lock in your bets.

Enjoy the Christmas weekend and the holidays, folks!

ALWAYS TRUST THE PROCESS

(Philadelphia 76ers +1 over New York Knicks)

The Knicks have been betting darlings recently with an awesome 4-1 SU and ATS stretch that?s thankfully included Kristaps avoiding injury. The battle between him and Embiid will be one to watch, but the overall matchup between the teams is offset by how good Simmons is compared to the rest of the Knicks. New York is tougher and more physical than everyone expected, and Philadelphia has serious problems on defence, but The Process is about to be put on his biggest stage and he will absolutely steal the spotlight.

THE DURANT-LEBRON MATCHUP WE?VE BEEN WAITING FOR

Cleveland Cavaliers +6.5 over Golden State Warriors

As you no doubt know already, the Warriors will be without Stephen Curry for the time being and that may detract from the championship rematch we?ve all been waiting to see since the season start, but it also offers us a chance to measure the two best players in the world against each other for once. That?s a pretty special Christmas present to NBA fans if you ask me.

LeBron James has to put the memory of having Durant ice the 2017 NBA Finals in his face to bed, and can do that in this game to a major extent. An incredible stat line of 28.4 / 9.2 / 8.2 on the season is what we?ve grown accustomed to with The King, but lost in that is the fact that him and Kevin Love lead all non-centers with 22 and 20 double-doubles all season. And the Cavs don?t even have Isaiah Thomas yet.

Durant has had a much quieter season this year statistically but is still a major force on the top offensive team in the entire NBA. Between the two teams, Curry has always been the x-factor that completely tilts the rivalry in favor of the Warriors and now that he?s sidelined we?ll get to see a matchup between Durant and LeBron on the level we haven?t seen in a long, long time.

This might be the best game to not bet on simply so you can enjoy it unscathed and unbiased, but if you?re going to leverage on this one then I?m encouraging a play on the Cavaliers. They?re running with the team that they?re familiar with, and Golden State has had some layup games since Curry?s injury.

I am too excited for this one and every part of your Christmas Day should be cleared to watch this game.

A BLEEDING BENCH IS KILLING THE BOSTON CELTICS

(Washington Wizards +5 over Boston Celtics)

The Wizards have far and away been one of the most disappointing bets of the NBA season, and they simply don?t match up that well against the hard charging Celtics. Washington is a surprisingly average team offensively, ranking just 14th overall. But they?re catching Boston at a good time. Jaylen Brown isn?t able to anchor the bench unit for Boston with a strained Achiles tendon, and that has literally been a major weakness for Brad Stevens.

Opponents are catching Boston off their mark when they rest their starters, and there?s just not enough firepower overall for the Celtics to be worthy of your trust. If you?re going to take the Wizards at any time, it?s on the road where they?re 10-6 ATS. And I love the matchup of Wall-Irving on Christmas Day. This will be a fun game that Washington just won?t want to give up too easily, and the Celtics are essentially treading water until a couple players return from injury.

HOLY CRAP WERE THE ROCKETS LUCKY TO GET ERIC GORDON

(Houston Rockets -4.5 over Oklahoma City Thunder)

When the Rockets traded for Eric Gordon, they got the insurance policy that they needed. This offence is fully capable of running through James Harden, which slips Gordon in to the two-guard spot. In a recent loss to the Lakers, Gordon stepped up in to Paul?s spot on the starting rotation and dropped 21 points. People have long forgotten how good Gordon is and he?s in an absolutely perfect offence to shine his skill set. Houston is a pristine 9-4 ATS when travelling, and there?s absolutely no way I can stomach the Oklahoma City Thunder as a bet.

Russell Westbrook is one of my favorite players to watch, but this offence is undeniably one of the least enjoyable to observe. There has to be a major paradigm shift for the OK3 to get rolling and it probably has to start with all three learning how to use each other a bit better. It?s a work in progress that I haven?t abandoned completely, but all logic dictates that Harden will savor an opportunity to remind his former team of what they passed up on by trading him so many seasons ago.

Besides, are you going to bet against the one guy who has a Santa Claus beard on Christmas Day?

CAN WE TRUST WIGGINS?

Minnesota Timberwolves -3.5 over Los Angeles Lakers

By far the most difficult game to get a read on is the Lakers-Timberwolves, which ends the fun slate that we have on Christmas Day. Los Angeles has gone on a terrific, albeit strange, run as of late with a record of 3-3 SU and 5-1 ATS. A 38-point game by rookie Kyle Kuzma has cemented this starting lineup as an incredibly intriguing one, even if Lonzo tends to have more bad nights than good ones.

Despite leading the division in the Northwest and boasting so many interesting talents, the Timberwolves have sort of been an afterthought. Their awful 13-17-2 ATS record has disinterested the betting community to a large extent. At the core of their issues is the fact that Andrew Wiggins hasn?t taken a leap at all. The Canadian superstar is averaging just 17.6 points per game so far.

The Lakers aren?t as far behind as everyone assumed they would be, but theyr?e still a young team with a great coaching staff that will take time to find some consistency. Living up to expectations in big, nationally televised games is not a moment I feel that they?re ready for. The Timberwolves are by no stretch a serious contender yet, but they?re by and large a much more balanced team that can frustrate the run-and-gun that the Lakers try to employ. Karl-Anthony Towns has no equal in this game and will play like it to end your Christmas Day NBA betting on a high note.

Warriors, Cavs headline holiday hoops
December 25, 2017

NEW YORK (AP) Not since the Kobe-Shaq breakup have two rivals spent so many Christmases together.

Golden State and Cleveland are playing the holiday's heaviest-hyped matchup for the third straight season. The same teams hadn't met that many times on Christmas since the Lakers and Miami squared off from 2004-06.

This time the Warriors, as the NBA champions, are home for the holiday after having to travel to LeBron James' house last season.

''It's great. It's no fun playing on the road on Christmas,'' Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. ''It's great playing at home. I always enjoy Christmas Day home games.''

The Lakers-Heat trilogy began immediately after Los Angeles had dealt Shaquille O'Neal to Miami, making it an obvious addition to the schedule because of his feud with Bryant, even though the Lakers had fallen from championship contention.

Dwyane Wade played in those games, beginning what's been one of the most successful Christmas careers. His 10 wins in 12 appearances are the most in NBA history, and his 301 points are tied with James for third on the list.

Now together, they will to lead Cleveland to its 20th win in 22 games.

---

A look at the games on the schedule of the 70th edition of the NBA on Christmas:

PHILADELPHIA 76ERS AT NEW YORK KNICKS, Noon.

The 76ers hope Joel Embiid can return from a back injury to play in their first Christmas Day game since 2001. The Knicks have played a league-high 51 games on Christmas and their 22 victories are tied with the Lakers for the most. They better enjoy being home for the holidays because they won't be many times after Christmas. New York, tied for the NBA low with two road victories, plays 16 of its next 20 games away from Madison Square Garden after Monday.

CLEVELAND CAVALIERS AT GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS, 3 p.m. EST

Stephen Curry isn't expected back and Isaiah Thomas isn't quite ready, so these familiar foes won't look like they did last June or will if they meet again next June. Their first meeting this season is on the same floor as their last one, the Warriors' victory in Game 5 of the NBA Finals. The team that won the title followed by also taking the Christmas Day matchup the next season after their two previous championship clashes, with the Cavaliers erasing a 3-1 deficit in the 2016 Finals and then a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter last Dec. 25 at home.

WASHINGTON WIZARDS AT BOSTON CELTICS, 5:30 p.m. EST

It's hard to make history on a franchise with as much history as theirs, but the Celtics will just by stepping on the floor Monday. They've never played a home game on Christmas, with 28 road contests and two at neutral sites. Expect them to be rude hosts to a Washington team returning to Boston for the first time since Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals, a series in which the teams exchanged hard fouls and bad blood in what's become a heated rivalry recently.

HOUSTON ROCKETS AT OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER, 8 p.m. EST

Perhaps it's time for Carmelo Anthony's breakout performance with the Thunder, because nobody has been better on Christmas. He has averaged 33.2 points in five games, tops among all players who made at least four appearances. This is the Thunder's first chance to see what Anthony and Paul George mean in this matchup after the Rockets easily dispatched them in the first round of the playoffs. James Harden has scored 51 points in his last two games, but the Rockets lost both of them after winning 14 in a row.

MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES AT LOS ANGELES LAKERS, 10:30 p.m. EST

The Timberwolves get another chance after losing in Oklahoma City last year in their first appearance on Christmas. Christmas games may be new to the Wolves but not to fans in Minnesota, as the Lakers made their first 11 appearances on the holiday from 1949-59 when they were based in Minneapolis. The Lakers have gone on to play 19 straight years on Christmas, so rookies Lonzo Ball and Kyle Kuzma better get used to having holiday plans.

Brown to Warriors mean so much
December 25, 2017

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Mike Brown had just finished spending some rare down time on Alameda's Coast Guard Island stuffing care packages for overseas military and veterans when Camille Spaulding approached to introduce herself and tell the Warriors assistant coach about a college student friend scraping by to attend an occasional Golden State game.

Upon hearing that, Brown found a piece of paper and wrote a note for Spaulding to hand off: He would leave Brian Trieu tickets to an upcoming game.

Four days later on Nov. 11, Brown delivered on that commitment to an overjoyed and appreciative Trieu, who brought along a buddy to see a Warriors' win against the 76ers.

Brown also supported military members by signing card after card with his autograph and "Thanks for all you do!" He gets it. His father, Bobby, served 26 years in the Air Force.

''I grew up on military bases,'' Brown said. ''Growing up in the military and especially playing high school sports, you're going from base to base to base. And then sometimes you make friends with kids on other bases so you go to that base for a day. For me, this is fantastic and I do feel like I'm kind of back in time being on this base.''

That giving approach is just part of Brown's generous nature, and as the defending champions host LeBron James and Cleveland on Christmas Day, everyone will remember exactly what he did to help guide Golden State to a second title in three years last June filling in for ailing coach Steve Kerr. Brown coached the Warriors for 11 postseason contests - all wins - including Game 1 of the Finals against the Cavaliers team he once led.

After the pressure-packed championship run, he had earned a little break. Brown and his brother took off along the Pacific Coast Highway on their motorcycles just before training camp and stopped at many of the most scenic spots before ending up in Seattle. They headed back on I-5 to see Brown's son, Elijah, at Oregon, and caught a Ducks football game against Nebraska.

Brown needed some time to unwind after a whirlwind summer that followed a frenzy of a finish to Golden State's championship season. He also sold his home in Cleveland, at last cutting ties to his former life.

Looking back, Brown considered himself like a substitute teacher leading the Warriors.

''Hopefully we were a class that obeyed and paid attention and he didn't have to send us to the principal's office,'' cracked two-time MVP Stephen Curry, out for the Christmas game with a sprained right ankle.

And oh how thankful he is everybody involved cooperated and made his life fairly easy.

It didn't hurt he had superstars like Curry, Kevin Durant, Draymond Green and Klay Thompson.

''Mike, he's so happy here,'' Kerr said. ''He tells me all the time how much he loves working here, how much he loves living in the bay. We're obviously lucky to coach such a great roster.''

Brown insists key backup Andre Iguodala likely has no idea how much he helped by keeping a pulse on the team, serving as a sounding board for the interim coach and communicating anything he saw or ideas he had.

''I think he changed himself for us, too,'' Iguodala said. ''He's used to doing things a certain way based on his training. He adjusted some things he would normally, he would act a certain way to this or he would do this in his normal situations. I think it was both sides, `OK, Steve's out, we've got to tighten up in this area where he's lax on to help Mike out and Mike will do the same for us.'''

Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry, another former top Golden State assistant, admired Brown's handling of the Warriors from afar during the postseason.

''It's a great atmosphere there. The players are really locked in for team success, but I thought Mike did a great job of managing the games and the rotations,'' Gentry said. ''He's had a lot of success in this league, he's been a Coach of the Year in this league so it wasn't like they were getting a guy that was wet around the ears. They got a veteran guy that has great relationships with the players and is a really good basketball coach. He said it was one the most pleasant experiences he's gone through as a coach because the guys were so locked in making sure everything was fine.''

Everybody involved with the Warriors, from the top executives on down, so appreciated Brown's ability to balance his changing roles.

Curry realizes it couldn't have been easy.

''That's got to be a very nerve-wracking experience because of how much is at stake, especially in the playoffs,'' Curry said. ''But he handled it with composure just like the head coach would. He has that experience but he did it in a very modest way, if you will.

''He knew it wasn't about him but he was very confident in himself to take responsibility and make the right calls and say the right things and push us in the right direction as Coach Kerr would have it. You could have a coach that would come in and say `Look at me, look at me, look what I did' type of vibe but that would distract us from the goal at hand, the mission at hand.''

NBA Note - Los Angeles Lakers Ball, Lonzo
December 24, 2017

PG Lonzo Ball, who was injured in the second quarter of Saturday night's game against the Portland Trail Blazers, had an MRI on Sunday that revealed a sprain in his left shoulder.

Ball will be reevaluated in one week, according to a statement released by the Lakers. He will not play in Monday's game against visiting Minnesota, the Lakers said.

Ball played 28 minutes in Friday's game at Portland. He returned to the court after suffering the injury when he became tangled with Portland's Jusuf Nurkic near the end of the first half.

He told reporters after the game he felt a "pop" when the injury occurred. He finished with 10 points and four assists.

If Ball does not play until he is reevaluated in a week, he will miss five games.

NBA roundup: Durant's defense seals win over Cavs
December 25, 2017

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Klay Thompson broke a late tie with a 3-pointer and Kevin Durant protected the lead with two key defensive plays on LeBron James, lifting the Golden State Warriors to a 99-92 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA's marquee matchup on Christmas Day.

Neither team led by more than nine points in the tightly contested rematch of last spring's NBA Finals, which the Warriors won in five games.

Durant, despite just 8-for-19 shooting, had 25 points to pace the Warriors, who have won six of their last seven at home against the Cavaliers.

Kevin Love had a game-high 31 points and 18 rebounds for the Cavaliers. James was held to 20 points on 7-for-18 shooting.

Sixers 105, Knicks 98

NEW YORK -- Joel Embiid had 25 points and 16 rebounds, and J.J. Redick added 24 points with four 3-pointers as Philadelphia snapped its season-high five-game losing streak.

Enes Kanter had 31 points -- including 14 in the third quarter -- and 22 rebounds, and Kristaps Porzingis added 22 points for the Knicks, who have lost three of four after winning four straight.

Ben Simmons, who struggled offensively and finished with eight points, had a crucial steal and breakaway dunk with 1 minute, 6 seconds left, jumping in front of a Porzingis pass and taking it the other way to give the 76ers an eight-point cushion. He then forced a turnover on New York's next possession, and Philadelphia was able to juice the clock late.

Wizards 111, Celtics 103

BOSTON -- Kelly Oubre Jr. and Bradley Beal both scored five straight points during a late 12-0 run, leading Washington past Boston.

It was the first time the Celtics played at home on Christmas, and they were fighting an uphill battle throughout the game. They wiped out an 11-point third-quarter deficit and led by five before the Wizards (19-15) caught fire.

Beal scored 25 points and grabbed eight rebounds and John Wall had 21 points, 14 assists and five boards. Kyrie Irving and Jayson Tatum led the Celtics with 20 points apiece.

Thunder 112, Rockets 107

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Russell Westbrook scored 31 points to lift Oklahoma City over Houston.

Westbrook outdueled James Harden, who finished with 29 points.

Paul George added 24 and Carmelo Anthony 20 for the Thunder, who extended their season-long winning streak to five games.

Trevor Ariza and Eric Gordon scored 20 for the Rockets, who lost for the third consecutive time after winning 14 consecutive games.

Timberwolves 121, Lakers 104

LOS ANGELES -- Taj Gibson and Jimmy Butler scored 24 points apiece and Minnesota continued its best start in 14 years with a victory against Los Angeles.

Karl-Anthony Towns had 21 points and 10 rebounds and Jamal Crawford contributed 19 points off the bench for the Timberwolves, who shot a season-high 58.3 percent from the floor.

Kyle Kuzma made 6 of 11 3-pointers and scored 31 points to lead the Lakers. Jordan Clarkson added 17 points and Julius Randle scored 16 off the bench.
