Rozier steals spotlight, leads Celtics past Cavaliers 102-88
January 3, 2018

BOSTON (AP) Terry Rozier scored 20 points in 20 minutes, stealing the spotlight from LeBron James, Kyrie Irving and Isaiah Thomas in a rematch of the Eastern Conference finals and leading the Boston Celtics to a 102-88 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday night.

Rozier scored the last eight Boston points of the first quarter to give the Celtics an 11-point lead, and had another eight in a row midway through the fourth when they expanded the lead to 21. Marcus Smart and Jayson Tatum had 15 points apiece, and Irving and Al Horford each had 11 points and nine rebounds to help Boston to its fourth straight win.

James had 19 points, seven rebounds and six assists, and Tristan Thompson had 10 points and 10 rebounds for Cleveland, which lost for the fourth time in five games. Playing on back-to-back nights - the Celtics had been preparing for them since New Year's Eve - Cleveland shot 34.8 percent.

It was the first time the teams had played since the season opener, when top Boston free agent Gordon Hayward broke his leg in a gruesome injury that reshuffled the Eastern Conference playoff race.

WARRIORS 125, MAVERICKS 122

DALLAS (AP) - Stephen Curry hit a long 3-pointer with three seconds to play, giving Golden State a hard-fought victory over Dallas.

Curry finished with 32 points as Golden State's ''Big Four'' combined for 100 - and the Warriors needed every one of them against a Mavericks team that had won four straight.

Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson had 25 points each, and Draymond Green added 18 to go with 10 rebounds.

Wesley Matthews led the Mavericks with 22 points, including seven 3-pointers, and Dwight Powell tied his career high with 21.

Dallas, playing from behind most of the game, erased a 12-point deficit with 4:32 to play, tying the score at 120 on Harrison Barnes' jumper with 39.9 seconds left.

76ERS 112, SPURS 106

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Joel Embiid shook off a sprained right hand that nearly kept him out of the lineup to score 21 points, grab 11 rebounds and lead Philadelphia past San Antonio.

The 76ers snapped a 12-game losing streak to the Spurs. They needed all 35 minutes from Embiid to knock off short-handed San Antonio.

Embiid was injured in a hard fall Saturday against the Suns. Philadelphia's leading scorer and rebounder sat at his locker before the game and said his hand was swollen and he couldn't shoot.

Embiid used a soft touch to sink a couple of shots during pregame drills, and that was enough to convince the Sixers he could play.

The Sixers blew a 16-point lead and might have been thumped from the outset had the Spurs not sat five players. Patty Mills led the Spurs with 26 points and LaMarcus Aldridge had 24 points and 14 rebounds.

ROCKETS 116, MAGIC 98

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - Gerald Green scored 27 points, Clint Capela had 21 points and eight rebounds and Houston got by without NBA scoring leader James Harden, routing Orlando.

Harden was sidelined by a strained left hamstring.

Green made his first five 3-point shots and finished 7 for 10 from behind the arc for the Rockets, who were never behind and led by as many as 28 late in the third quarter.

Eric Gordon added 17 points and six assists to help Houston tune up for its Thursday night showdown with Golden State.

Aaron Gordon led the Magic with 16 points after missing his first eight shots. Elfrid Payton and Mario Hezonja added 14 each during Orlando's 12th loss in 13 games.

WIZARDS 121, KNICKS 103

WASHINGTON (AP) - Bradley Beal scored 27 points, John Wall added 25 with nine assists and Washington beat New York.

Playing for the first time since he was selected Eastern Conference player of the week, Beal followed his 39-point outburst on Sunday by hitting 11 of his 14 field goal attempts for Washington, which was won five of six.

Marcin Gortat had a season-high 21 points, shooting 9 of 10 from the field.

Michael Beasley had 20 points, including 16 in the second half to lead the Knicks, who have lost six of seven.

Kristips Porzingis scored 16 points. New York has lost 14 of its last 15 against Washington.

HEAT 111, PISTONS 104

MIAMI (AP) - Kelly Olynyk scored 25 points, including a big layup with 39 seconds left, and Goran Dragic added 24 as Miami held off Detroit.

Olynyk finished with 13 rebounds and Dragic had 13 assists for the Heat, who are three games over .500 for the first time since April 2016.

Josh Richardson scored 22 for Miami, which shot 51 percent and outscored the Pistons 51-27 from 3-point range. James Johnson scored 16, Wayne Ellington had 12 and Hassan Whiteside added 10 for the Heat.

Tobias Harris led a balanced Detroit effort with 19.

NETS 98, TIMBERWOLVES 97

NEW YORK (AP) - Spencer Dinwiddie made the go-ahead jumper with 9.7 seconds left and tied his career high with 26 points, leading Brooklyn over Minnesota.

Jimmy Butler missed at the buzzer as the Timberwolves lost for just the second time in nine games.

Dinwiddie added nine assists as the Nets improved to 2-0 in the new year - more wins than they had all last January, when they were 1-15. Joe Harris came off the bench to score 17 points.

Butler finished with 30 points, mostly on the strength of 16-of-18 shooting at the foul line. Andrew Wiggins added 17 points and Karl-Anthony Towns had 16 points and 10 rebounds.

RAPTORS 124, BULLS 115

CHICAGO (AP) - DeMar DeRozan had 35 points and Delon Wright set career highs with 25 points and 13 rebounds as Toronto beat Chicago.

DeRozan came up big again after scoring a franchise-record 52 points in a win over Milwaukee on New Year's Day. Held to nine in the first half this time, he scored 18 in the third quarter. He also shot 5 of 8 on 3-pointers and converted all 10 free throws.

Wright had his first career double-double and hit four 3s.

Serge Ibaka scored 16 points for Toronto. Fred VanVleet added 13 and the Raptors pulled away in the fourth quarter for their ninth win in 11 games.

Justin Holiday led Chicago with 26 points, and Lauri Markkanen added 22 points and 12 rebounds. Nikola Mirotic scored 20, but the Bulls dropped their third straight.

BUCKS 122, PACERS 101

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Giannis Antetokounmpo had 31 points and 10 rebounds, Khris Middleton added 27 points and Milwaukee pulled away from Indiana.

Antetokounmpo had his way around the rim with his usual array of dunks and layups, shooting 12 of 18. He secured his 18th double-double of the season with 1:01 left in the third quarter and was rested for the entire fourth.

Minus leading scorer Victor Oladipo (24.9 points per game) for a fourth straight game because of a knee injury, the Pacers couldn't keep up. Domantas Sabonis had a career-high 24 points on 10-of-13 shooting for Indiana, which lost its season-high fifth in a row.

The Pacers shot just 3 of 15 from 3-point range.

PELICANS 108, JAZZ 98

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Anthony Davis had 29 points and 15 rebounds to lead New Orleans past Utah.

Jrue Holiday carried the offense early with 18 first-half points and finished with 24 for the Pelicans. DeMarcus Cousins added 19 points and 11 rebounds.

Donovan Mitchell led the Jazz with 24 points, and Joe Johnson scored 20 off the bench.

The Pelicans' 3-point shooting was the difference, as New Orleans went 14 for 30 (46.7 percent) from beyond the arc while the Jazz were 7 of 32 (21.9 percent).

The game went back and forth before the Pelicans closed the third quarter on a 12-1 run, including seven points from Davis. He added 10 in the fourth to help close it out.

NUGGETS 134, SUNS 111

DENVER (AP) - Gary Harris scored 28 of his 36 points in the first half and Denver used a big third quarter to beat Phoenix.

Harris tied his career high in points, finishing 14 of 17 from the field. Nikola Jokic added 14 points, nine rebounds and eight assists to help the Nuggets stop a two-game slide and improve to 13-4 at home this season.

Wilson Chandler scored 17 points, Trey Lyles had 16 and Jamal Murray 13.

Devin Booker led the Suns with 17 points. Greg Monroe, filling in for starting center Tyson Chandler, had 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

? Tulsa 90, UConn 88 2OT? Huskies are 7-7; natives must be restless.

? Drake 87, Illinois State 62? Experienced Bulldogs are 3-0 in the Valley.

? Kentucky 74, LSU 71? Wildcats won first two SEC games by total of 8 points.

? Georgia Tech 64, Miami 54? Hurricanes? travel schedule caught up wth them.

? South Dakota State 87, North Dakota State 80? Solid road win for the Jackrabbits.

? Three of seven games in the Atlantic 14 last night went to overtime.

**********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud?..

13) Marquette 95, Providence 90 OT? People are going nuts about Oklahoma freshman Trae Young- he is really, really good, but Marquette sophomore Markus Howard is really good too, and he?s six months younger than Young, having given up his senior year of high school to enroll in college a year early.

Howard scored 52 points for Marquette last nite in this win at Providence; he was 11-19 on the arc, and is 45-45 on the foul line this season.

12) ESPN apparently wants to hire Alex Rodriguez for Sunday Night Baseball, but A-Rod wants to dictate who the play-by-play guy will be, which is holding up his signing with ESPN.

11) 37 of the top country?s 50 TV broadcasts in 2017 (74%) were NFL games, so maybe ratings for NFL games have gone down, but they?ve gone down less than everything else on TV.

10) Quote of the Day, Part 2:

?I?m tired of being quiet. I?m sick of watching people bash my child but if he suited up tomorrow he?d be the next coming of Jesus Christ to you guys. Enough is enough. Be a fan, be supportive, be empathetic or just be quiet until the NCAA does what they have to do.?

Nicole Player, whose son is Billy Preston, a Kansas recruit who is ineligible for now because of questions about a car he was driving when he got into an accident

9) Green Bay Packers? coach Mike McCarthy will be squarely on hot seat next year, seeing as the team has gotten ridden of lot of other people since their season ended Sunday.

Packers ?re-assigned? (fired) their GM, fired both coordinators and their QB coach. When Aaron Rodgers gets hurt, people get fired.

8) Nick Saban is 11-0 when coaching against a former assistant, with all the wins by 14+ points; Monday night is his first game against former assistant, Georgia coach Kirby Smart.

Of the other 13 teams in the SEC, five are coached by former Saban assistants.

7) The 12 NHL regular season games with the all-time best TV ratings were all outdoor games.

6) In the CFL, Hamilton Tiger-Cats traded QB Zach Collaros to the Saskatchewan Roughriders, which clears the way for the Ti-Cats to sign Johnny Manziel, which should be interesting.

5) April 17 will be the 50th anniversary of the A?s first game in Oakland; they?re giving away all 50,000 seats that night, for the A?s-White Sox game.

4) QB?s Sam Darnold/Josh Rosen both declared for the NFL Draft Wednesday; if the Raiders hire Jon Gruden, ESPN needs to find another QB guru to ?interview? these QB prospects before the draft, the way Gruden did the last few years? it was his best TV work.

3) Florida State 81, North Carolina 80? Seminoles snapped a 7-game skid against UNC; they were up 11 at the half, hung on for the win.

2) Oklahoma 109, Oklahoma State 89? Sooners made 15-27 on the arc; Lon Kruger coached in the NBA and he has an NBA-level talent in freshman guard Young.

1) LSU?s defensive coordinator Dave Aranda is staying in Baton Rouge; he?ll be making $2.5M a year for the next four years. Thats $2.5M a year for an assistant football coach. Wow.

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) Miles Bridges had 15 points, seven assists, six rebounds and two blocks to help No. 1 Michigan State turn a closely contested game into another rout, pulling away to beat Maryland 91-61 on Thursday night.

The Spartans (15-1, 3-0 Big Ten) went on a 15-0 run late in the first half to take control and led 44-32 at halftime. They refused to be content with the 12-point lead, building 30-plus point cushions in the second half by diving for loose balls, playing tough defense and finishing with a season-high 16 3-pointers.

Freshman Jaren Jackson had 15 points, three blocks and two steals despite playing just 4 minutes in the first half because he had two fouls.

Anthony Cowman scored 26 points for the Terrapins (13-4, 2-2), who had won seven straight.

COLORADO 90, No. 4 ARIZONA STATE 81, OT

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) - Namon Wright scored five of his 19 points in overtime, including two crucial free throws at the end, for Colorado.

Down 11-0 to start the game, the Buffaloes (9-6, 1-2 Pac-12) steadily whittled away and opened up a six-point lead with 1:17 remaining in regulation. But the Sun Devils (12-2, 0-2) stormed back, with Mickey Mitchell tying the game at 74 with 5 seconds left on an emphatic dunk.

In overtime, the Buffaloes hit six straight free throws down the stretch. It was the highest-ranked team Colorado has beaten since knocking off No. 3 Texas on Feb. 4, 2003. The Colorado fans stormed the court to celebrate.

McKinley Wright added 19 points and George King chipped in 18 as Colorado snapped a three-game skid, including two straight to start conference play.

Tra Holder had 24 points for Arizona State before fouling out in OT.

No. 9 WICHITA STATE 81, HOUSTON.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) - Landry Shamet scored 18 points in just 22 minutes to lead Wichita State.

Wichita State (12-2, 2-0 American Athletic Conference) made nine of its first 11 3-point shots and led by as many as 25 in the first half. Starting guards Shamet and Conner Frankamp (15 points) were a combined 12 of 15 from the field.

Rob Gray led Houston (12-3, 2-1 American) with 13 points, six below his season average. He was 6 of 14 from the field.

No. 14 ARIZONA, UTAH 82

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Deandre Ayton scored 24 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for Arizona.

The Wildcats (12-3, 2-0 Pac-12) have won nine straight.

Rawle Alkins finished with 22 points for Arizona and Parker Jackson-Cartwright added 19.

Sedrick Barefield led Utah (10-4, 2-1) with 23 points and David Collette added 19.

Utah rallied from a 17-point deficit to tie the game late, but couldn't pull off the upset.

No. 19 CINCINNATI 55, TEMPLE 53

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Jacob Evans III hit the winner with .4 seconds to play for Cincinnati and the Bearcats got a needed assist from a soaring water bottle.

The Bearcats (13-2, 2-0 American Athletic Conference) rallied down the stretch to win their sixth straight game.

Temple led by two points when a turnover and on offensive foul caused coach Fran Dunphy to angrily smack a water bottle on the scorer's table and send the plastic container to the court. Dunphy was whistled for the technical. Gary Clark made one of two free throws to cut the Bearcats' deficit to one.

Kyle Washington put the Bearcats ahead 52-50 on a 3-pointer from the wing and Evans hit the jumper in the final second to win it.

Washington led the Bearcats with 18 points and Evans had 14.

Obi Enechionyia led the Owls (7-7, 0-3) with 14 points. The Owls have lost four straight games.

No. 19 GONZAGA 89, PEPPERDINE 59

MALIBU, Calif. (AP) - Killian Tillie had 22 points and eight rebounds to lead Gonzaga.

Johnathan Williams scored 13 points and Rui Hachimura had 12 points and six rebounds for the Bulldogs (13-3, 3-0 West Coast Conference), who have not lost to Pepperdine since 2002.

Gonzaga outscored Pepperdine 48-14 in the paint and had a 36-13 edge off the bench, with Corey Kispert adding nine points and eight rebounds. Zach Norvell Jr. scored all 10 of his points in the second half.

Eric Cooper Jr. had a season-high 19 points for the Waves (3-12, 0-3).

Warriors run past Rockets, 124-114
January 4, 2018

HOUSTON (AP) Stephen Curry is well aware that Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey has crafted his team specifically to try and beat the Golden State Warriors.

''As much as he talks about it, yeah it's hard not to,'' Curry said. ''It's pretty ... clear.''

But on Thursday night with the Rockets missing the most important piece on their team in James Harden, Chris Paul and his supporting cast were not enough to overcome the defending champions.

Curry scored 29 points, Klay Thompson had 28 and the Warriors pulled away late in the fourth quarter for a 124-114 victory.

Draymond Green added a triple-double with 17 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists to become the franchise career leader in triple-doubles with 21. It was his second this season to move him past Tom Gola.

The Warriors extended their road winning streak to nine games and have won an NBA-best 16 road games this season.

The teams stayed close through most of the game, but the Warriors had a seven-point lead with about 3 1/2 minutes left. They scored the next five points, highlighted by a 3 from Curry, to make it 120-109 and send many of the home fans streaming for the exits.

The Rockets got 30 points from Eric Gordon, and Gerald Green came off the bench to score 29 and tie a career high with eight 3-pointers as they played their second game without Harden, who is out for at least two weeks with a hamstring strain.

''We've got to get better as a team,'' Houston coach Mike D'Antoni said. ''We're just not quite there defensively, communication, all the stuff we can control we're not doing.''

The Warriors were short-handed, too, playing without Kevin Durant, who missed the game with strained right calf. But Andre Iguodala returned after sitting out Wednesday night with back and hip strains and had 10 points and eight assists.

''Obviously they were missing their best player without James so we felt like there was an opportunity for us,'' Thompson said.

Curry added nine rebounds and five assists and a steal in his third game back after missing 11 with a sprained right ankle.

Golden State led by 10 after a dunk by David West with about 7 1/2 minutes remaining. The Rockets scored the next five points, with a 3-pointer from Gerald Green, to get to 108-103, but the Warriors scored the next five points to go up by 10 again.

The Warriors were up by 3 after three and opened the fourth quarter with an 8-1 run to make it 101-91 with about 10 minutes left.

Chris Paul re-entered the game after that and he helped get things going when he found Gordon for a 3-pointer which started a 7-2 run that cut the lead to 103-98. Paul finished with 28 points, nine assists and seven rebounds.

Gerald Green's second 3-pointer in less than a minute put Houston up by two midway through the third quarter. The Warriors scored the next seven points, with a 3-pointer from Thompson, to take a 79-74 lead about a minute later.

They didn't stay on top for long though as the Rockets scored the next 11 points to go up 85-79. Gerald Green delighted the crowd when he knocked down a 3 from the corner before being fouled Iguodala and crashing to the ground. He also made the free throw.

The Warriors ended a 2 1/2 minute scoring drought on a dunk by Kevon Looney before Curry added a layup.

But Gerald Green pushed the lead to 88-83 when he banked in another 3-pointer.

The Warriors closed out the quarter with a 10-2 spurt, capped by 3s from Nick Young and Curry, to take a 93-90 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Rockets led 63-62 at halftime.

TIP-INS

Warriors: Omri Casspi missed his second straight game with a strained back. ... Curry played in his 600th career game with the Warriors, making him the 10th player in franchise history to reach that mark.

Rockets: Nene normally doesn't play the second game of back-to-back games but was also dealing with a bruised right knee that coach Mike D'Antoni could cause him to miss more time. ... Paul received a technical foul in the fourth quarter.

NICE CATCH

R&B singer Usher watched the game from a courtside seat next to Golden State's bench and got involved in the action when he caught Trevor Ariza and Curry as they sailed out of bounds and into his seat chasing a loose ball in the third quarter. Usher put his hands up to protect himself as they barreled his way and laughed as he collected himself after the two players got up.

''I think he made it out of that collision all right,'' Curry said. ''I just wanted to make sure his voice was fine. I didn't want to mess with that, that's his moneymaker.''

GREEN'S SHOT

Gerald Green became the first player in franchise history to make seven or more 3-pointers in consecutive games after he made seven on Wednesday night against Orlando. Golden State coach Steve Kerr raved about the work of Green, who was signed on Dec. 28.

''Gerald Green just kept them in the game almost singlehandedly,'' Kerr said. ''He's one of those guys it seems like you should just leave him open because it's all of the challenged ones that he makes. He makes all these crazy, difficult shots when you're flying at him and then there's some that are open that he misses.''

UP NEXT

Warriors: At Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday.

Rockets: At Detroit on Saturday.

Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

Super Bowl exacta odds: winner listed first

6-1? Patriots over Vikimgs

15-2? Vikings over Patriots

8-1? Vikings over Steelers

11-1? Patriots over Eagles, Patriots over Rams, Patriots over Saints

12-1? Steelers over Vikings

14-1? Saints over Patriots

**********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here??.

13) Carson Palmer retired this week; he earned $174,148,722 in his NFL career, which means he can do whatever he wants the rest of his life, but lot of athletes have trouble finding something to do that is as stimulating/interesting as playing ball.

Former Phillies star Mike Schmidt talked about that after he retired, how he has struggled to find something that motivates him like baseball did. Schmidt does Phillies games on TV on the weekends; he tried managing in the minor leagues, but that didn?t last long.

12) This would be an interesting TV series; looking up retired athletes and seeing what they?re doing now. Anfernee Hardaway is an interesting person to look at? he coaches high school basketball in Memphis now, and has a really good team. Hardaway earned over $120M in his playing career.

11) TV ratings for the college football bowl games were up 7% from last year; yes, there are too many bowls, but yes, people are watching them.

10) Snowy day here today at Armadillo World HQ; it is a windy, snowy mess here, but was also a solid day of movies on TV. Bull Durham, Blue Chips, The Bodyguard, plus I found a Without a Trace marathon. Better than braving the elements outside on a cruddy winter day.

9) Kevin Durant donated $3M to the University of Texas to support the basketball program and the Center for Sports Leadership and Innovation. Durant only played one season at Texas, before heading on to the NBA.

8) RIP Rob Picciolo 64, who passed away this week. Picciolo played nine years in the majors, six of them for the A?s? he was a solid fielder who today would be a super-utility guy. He had been coaching in the major leagues, with the Angels and Padres.

7) Central Florida went 13-0 this year, joining this list of smaller-budget football programs that had an unbeaten season. Here is how the other four teams did the following season:

Utah, 2005? 7-5, won Emerald Bowl 38-10
Boise State, 2007? 10-3, lost Hawai?i Bowl 41-38
Utah, 2009? 10-3, won Poinsettia Bowl 24-13
TCU, 2011? 11-2, won Poinsettia Bowl 31-24

6) Lot of college basketball teams have almost no depth; Syracuse lost 73-67 at Wake Forest on Wednesday; they played two guys the whole 40:00, two others 37:00. Their subs played a total of only fifteen minutes.

5) Sign of the Times: In Tulsa?s 90-88 double OT win over UConn Wednesday, Golden Hurricane made 17-41 3-pointers, 25-36 on foul line, but only 7-23 inside the arc. Shooting has become a huge skill, since teams that don?t have much depth play more zone.

4) Guy named Briceton Branch won around $1.3M when he won this year?s Westgate SuperContest, where you pony up $1,500, then pick five NFL games a week against the spread. More than 2,700 handicappers were involved this season, the biggest one they?ve had.

3) Football coaches are gypsies; Giants? offensive coordinator Mike Sullivan is the new QB coach in Denver. Rumors on the Interweb Thursday had the Broncos more interested in acquiring Kirk Cousins than Eli Manning- they?re desperate to upgrade their QB play from the last two years.

2) There are rumblings that Donald Trump is going to the Alabama-Georgia game Monday nite, raising the possibility that player(s) on either team might take a knee during national anthem; seeing how there will be roughly 200 players on the sidelines, what are the odds that we get thru the night without some politically-inspired drama?

1) Warm thought of the day: Dodgers? spring training tickets go on sale Friday morning; tickets are $3 cheaper if you buy them in advance, as opposed to buying them the day of the game.

Friday's Tip Sheet
January 4, 2018

Game of the Night: Wolves at Celtics ? 7:30 PM EST

Boston (31-10 SU, 25-14-2 ATS) picked up a modicum of revenge by knocking off Cleveland on Wednesday, 102-88 as three-point home favorites. Six Celtics scored in double-figures, led by Terry Rozier?s 20 points of the bench, while Kyrie Irving posted 11 points on 5-of-14 shooting in his second matchup against his former team. Boston looks to complete its four-game homestand following victories over Houston and Brooklyn, as the Celtics have allowed 98 points or less in four of the past six games at TD Garden.

Minnesota (24-15 SU, 17-20-2 ATS) was tripped up in the final seconds on Wednesday as 6 ?-point favorites in a 98-97 setback at Brooklyn. The Wolves held their third straight opponent to 98 points or fewer, but allowed Brooklyn to shoot 51% from the floor, including hitting 14 three-pointers. Jimmy Butler paced the Wolves with 30 points as 16 of those came from the free-throw line, but the team shot 1-of-11 from long distance.

The Celtics swept the Wolves last season, including a 13-point triumph by Boston at home in mid-March. Minnesota has dropped 10 consecutive matchups at TD Garden since 2006, while looking to improve on a 2-4 record on the road against Eastern Conference foes this season.

Good to See You Again

The Bucks and Raptors are hooking up for the second time in five days after Toronto pulled out a 131-127 overtime victory at the Air Canada Center. DeMar DeRozan lit up the Bucks for a career-high 52 points on 17-of-29 shooting from the floor, but Milwaukee managed to pick up the cover as six-point underdogs.

Toronto (26-10 SU, 21-15 ATS) rallied from an early double-digit deficit to knock off Chicago on Wednesday, 124-115 to cash as 4 ?-point favorites. The Raptors began the fourth quarter on a 16-4 run after being tied following three quarters, as Dwane Casey?s team improved to 5-1 this season against teams from the Central division.

Toronto is making its first trip to Milwaukee since knocking out the Bucks in the opening round of the playoffs last season, as the Raptors captured two of three games at BMO Harris Bradley Center.

Milwaukee (20-16 SU, 16-15-5 ATS) has won 13 of 19 home contests this season, coming off Wednesday?s 122-101 blowout of Indiana as 7 ?-point favorites. Jason Kidd?s squad has covered in four straight games, while moving to 8-1-1 to the OVER in the last 10 home contests.

Overcoming Slow Starts

Although Chicago and Dallas are each over 12 games below .500, these two have turned a profit recently for backers. The Bulls (13-25 SU, 22-15-1 ATS) couldn?t hold on to an early lead over the Raptors in Wednesday?s nine-point home setback. Chicago failed to cover for the second straight game, but the Bulls still own a solid 13-3 ATS record in the last 16 contests, while putting together a 7-1 ATS mark in their past eight on the highway.

The Mavericks (13-26 SU, 20-18-1 ATS) had their four-game winning streak snapped by Stephen Curry and the Warriors in a 125-122 home setback on Wednesday. Dallas picked up a cover as eight-point underdogs, the fifth consecutive ATS win for Rick Carlisle?s club. The Mavs have won five of their past seven games at American Airlines Center, while beating the Bulls four straight times.

Final Stanza

The Jazz and Nuggets hook up for the final time in the regular season on Friday as Denver looks to even the season series at 2-2 with a win. Utah (16-22 SU, 19-19 ATS) sits in last place of the Northwest division after losing at home to New Orleans on Wednesday, 108-98 as one-point favorites. It?s been a rough stretch for Quin Snyder?s team, who owns a 3-11 SU and 5-9 ATS record the past 14 contests, including a 1-8 record away from Salt Lake City.

One of those eight defeats came at Denver on December 26, a 107-83 blowout loss to the Nuggets as 5 ?-point underdogs. The Nuggets (20-17 SU, 18-18-1 ATS) snapped a two-game skid in Wednesday?s 134-111 melting of the Suns as 12-point favorites, as Denver scorched Phoenix for 62% shooting from the floor. Each of the first three meetings between the Jazz and Nuggets have finished UNDER the total, while the UNDER is on a 9-1 run in the last 10 matchups.

Winning Wizards

Washington (22-16 SU, 19-19 ATS) swept a three-game homestand against Houston, Chicago, and New York, as the Wizards have won five of their past six games. In Wednesday?s 121-103 blowout of the Knicks, the backcourt duo of John Wall and Bradley Beal combined for 52 points on 20-of-32 shooting, while the Wizards knocked down 59% of their shots.

The Wizards travel to Memphis (22-16 SU, 19-19 ATS), looking for a season sweep of the Grizzlies after winning at home in mid-December, 93-87. The Grizzlies finished off a five-game western swing at 2-3 SU and 3-2 ATS, capped off by a 113-105 setback to the Clippers on Tuesday. Following a 1-11 stretch at home, the Grizzlies have won two of their last three at FedEx Forum, while beating the Wizards in their previous two home matchups.

Starting to Heat Up

Since consecutive losses earlier this month to the Warriors and Spurs, the Heat (20-17 SU, 16-19-2 ATS) have won nine of their last 13 games to reach the 20-win mark. The latest victory came in Wednesday?s 111-104 triumph over the Pistons as 4 ?-point favorites. Goran Dragic paced Miami with 24 points and 13 assists, while Kelly Olynyk continues his solid season with the Heat by scoring 25 points and grabbing 13 rebounds.

Miami will try to avenge a 29-point setback at New York in late November as the Knicks venture to south Florida. New York (18-20 SU, 20-18 ATS) dropped to 3-13 away from Madison Square Garden following Wednesday?s 18-point loss at Washington, while falling to 1-6 in the past seven games overall. The Knicks have fared well at the American Airlines Arena recently by capturing the last three matchups, while seven of the past eight meetings between New York and Miami have finished UNDER the total.

Fast Break

-- The 76ers seek their third victory over the Pistons this season as the two teams hook up in Philadelphia. The Pistons have dropped three consecutive games away from Little Caesars Arena, while the Sixers are riding a three-game winning streak following a 112-106 home win over the Spurs.

-- San Antonio returns home after losing two of three games on its three-game swing as the Spurs welcome in the Suns. Phoenix owns an 0-2 record this season against San Antonio, but the Suns have won four consecutive games off a loss following a 23-point defeat at Denver.

-- The Hawks look to rebound after blowing a late eight-point lead in the final 90 seconds in Tuesday?s setback at Phoenix. Atlanta remains out west to face Portland, attempting to beat the Blazers for the second time in less than a week. The Blazers are back home after a 1-2 road swing as Portland tries to improve on a 1-6 record in its last seven games at the Moda Center.

-- The Lakers have fallen apart at the seams by losing eight consecutive games, including a 133-96 setback to Oklahoma City on Wednesday. Los Angeles hosts Charlotte, as the Hornets seek consecutive road wins for the first time this season after blowing out Sacramento. Charlotte had defeated L.A. in five straight meetings before getting tripped up at home by the Lakers in early December, 110-99.

Kris Dunn, Bulls survive frantic rally to beat Mavs
January 5, 2018

DALLAS (AP) Kris Dunn scored a career-high 32 points, Justin Holiday added 23 and the Chicago Bulls held off a frantic Dallas rally in a 127-124 victory over the Mavericks on Friday night.

Rookie Lauri Markkanen had 16 with an emphatic follow-up dunk during a surge that put the Bulls up 10 with 1:08 to play.

The Mavericks slowly trimmed the deficit with full-court pressure and fouls in the final minute. Dallas actually had a shot to tie, but Yogi Ferrell's 3-pointer at the buzzer was short. The teams combined for 35 points in the final 68 seconds.

Wesley Matthews led Dallas with 24 points and Harrison Barnes had 23 in a fitting matchup of teams having nearly identical seasons - miserable starts followed by respectable recoveries that pulled each out of last place in its conference.

76ERS 114, PISTONS 78

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid sparked Philadelphia to a mammoth lead in a romp over Detroit.

Embiid had 23 points and nine rebounds. Simmons had 19 points and nine assists to lead the Sixers to their fourth straight win, which moved them back to .500.

With 2 minutes left in the first half, Embiid and Simmons had combined for 26 points on 12-of-19 shooting. The Pistons had 26 points on 11-of-38 shooting.

The 76ers have a bad habit of blowing double-digit leads that crushed their push toward a more respectable spot in the standings. They wasted an 18-point lead in a loss to Portland. The Sixers turned a 22-point edge into a loss against Toronto. And they led by 16 points before Sacramento beat them.

The Sixers opened the game on a 15-2 run and, unlike their December collapses, they never let this one get close. They led 97-61 through three.

CELTICS 91, TIMBERWOLVES 84

BOSTON (AP) - Marcus Smart scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half, Kyrie Irving had 16 points, nine rebounds and eight assists and Boston pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat Minnesota.

Terry Rozier had 14 points and nine rebounds, Aron Baynes had 11 points and 10 rebounds and Jaylen Brown also scored 11 for Boston, which has won five straight and six of seven.

Karl-Anthony Towns led the Timberwolves with 25 points and a career-high 23 rebounds. Jimmy Butler scored 14, Jamal Crawford had 13 points and Andrew Wiggins scored 10 for Minnesota, which lost back-to-back games for the first time since November.

Towns pulled down more than half of the Timberwolves' 43 rebounds, and no other Minnesota player had more than four as Boston dominated the glass 56-43.

RAPTORS 129, BUCKS 110

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Jonas Valanciunas scored all of his 20 points in the decisive third quarter and Toronto beat Milwaukee for the second time this week.

Toronto outscored Milwaukee 43-19 in the third quarter to win its fourth consecutive game, including a 131-127 overtime victory over the Bucks on Monday. The Raptors have won 10 of 12.

Valanciunas played the entire third quarter, going 8 of 9 and grabbing nine of his 13 rebounds, as the Raptors extended a two-point halftime lead to 104-78.

Serge Ibaka scored 17 of his team-high 21 points in the first half, and DeMar DeRozan, who scored 52 points in the Raptors' win over Milwaukee on Monday, had 14 of his 20 in the third.

Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 24 points for the Bucks. Malcolm Brogdon had 19 and Eric Bledsoe added 17.

HEAT 107, KNICKS 103, OT

MIAMI (AP) - Wayne Ellington scored 24 points, Goran Dragic added 19 and Miami survived a back-and-forth flurry in the final minutes to beat New York in overtime.

Josh Richardson scored 18 and Tyler Johnson added 16 for Miami, which went 19 for 20 from the foul line - 13 for 13 after halftime. The Heat set a franchise record by taking 42 3-pointers, and Ellington had another team all-time mark by attempting 16.

Doug McDermott's 3-pointer with 1.1 seconds left in regulation sent the game to overtime, and the Knicks led twice in the extra session. Miami finished the game on a 7-2 spurt, started by a 3 from Ellington with 2:22 remaining.

Courtney Lee scored 24 for New York, which got 20 from Michael Beasley and 15 from Kristaps Porzingis. The Knicks lost despite shooting 49 percent and holding the Heat to 40 percent.

SPURS 103, SUNS 89

SAN ANTONIO (AP) - Kawhi Leonard and Manu Ginobili each scored 21 points, and San Antonio got its ninth straight home win over Phoenix.

Ginobili joined Vince Carter as the only 40-year-old players to score 20 points off the bench. He shot 7 for 10 from the field in setting a season high for points.

The Spurs were without starters LaMarcus Aldridge, who sat out for rest, and an injured Danny Green, but had 15 steals and six blocks against the Suns while shooting 47 percent.

Devin Booker had 21 points and Marquese Chriss added 12 for Phoenix.

NUGGETS 99, JAZZ 91

DENVER (AP) - Trey Lyles scored a career-high 26 points, Jamal Murray also had 26 points and Denver beat Utah.

Lyles also grabbed seven rebounds. He averaged 21 points and 7.5 rebounds in the two home games against his former team to help the Nuggets split the season series with the Jazz. Denver outscored the Jazz 38-16 in the third quarter after trailing by three at halftime.

Donovan Mitchell had 15 points, seven rebounds and seven assists, Ricky Rubio also scored 15 points and Derrick Favors had 14 points and 10 rebounds for Utah. The Jazz have lost 12 of 15 since starting the season 13-11.

The game was tied at 56 when Murray hit a 3-pointer, was fouled and made the free throw to start a 20-5 Denver run.

TRAIL BLAZERS 110, HAWKS 89

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - CJ McCollum had 20 points and Portland beat Atlanta.

Damian Lillard added 14 points before sitting for the fourth quarter and the Blazers snapped a three-game losing streak to the Hawks at the Moda Center. Seven of Portland's players were in double figures.

Dennis Schroder had 14 points to lead the Hawks. They trailed by 25 points in fourth quarter en route to their third loss in four games.

It was not known whether Lillard would play against the Hawks because of a calf injury, but he started. Lillard was averaging just over 25 points heading into the game.

WIZARDS 102, GRIZZLIES 100

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Bradley Beal scored 34 points, John Wall added 25 points and nine assists, and Washington survived a late Memphis rally.

Markieff Morris, who had 12 points and matched his career high with 17 rebounds, converted a pair of free throws with 3 seconds left to provide the winning margin. Washington has won four straight.

Tyreke Evans led Memphis with 26 points, while Marc Gasol finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds as the Grizzlies lost their second straight.

HORNETS 108, LAKERS 94

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Kemba Walker had 19 points and seven assists, and Charlotte wrapped up a solid road trip with its first back-to-back victories since Thanksgiving, beating spiraling Los Angeles.

Jeremy Lamb scored 17 points and Marvin Williams added 16 for the Hornets, who won three of four in California and avenged their home loss to the Lakers last month. Six players scored in double figures for Charlotte, which has won four of six overall.

Lonzo Ball had 11 points and five assists in his first game since Dec. 23 for the Lakers, who have lost nine straight since Dec. 20. The rookie point guard missed six games with a sprained left shoulder, and he returned in limited minutes while rebuilding his strength.

Brandon Ingram had 22 points and a career-high 14 rebounds, but Los Angeles dropped to 1-12 since winning at Charlotte on Dec. 9. The Lakers (11-27) are in last place in the Western Conference.

Saturday?s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here??

13) Did some research today: as far as NFL teams meeting for third time in season in playoffs; in Super Bowl era, the home team is 34-25 in the third meeting. Teams that swept first 2 meetings are 11-5 in third meeting.

Carolina lost to the Saints twice this year, so they fit this scenario Sunday.

12) Jon Gruden is going to get a 10-year, $100M contract to coach the Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders, which seems excessive, but now ESPN needs to come up with someone to replace Gruden interviewing college QB prospects before the NFL Draft, because that was some of their best programming.

College basketball notes from last few days:
11) Western Kentucky?s 4-star recruit Josh Anderson became eligible this week, and will play at Marshall Saturday. Anderson is an athletic defender at guard who gives the Hilltoppers needed depth- they used seven players in their last three games.

10) North Texas won two of its first three games in C-USA; the three games were decided by total of four points.

9) Stanford 107, UCLA 99 2OT? Bruins went 19-35 on foul line in this double OT game, a game Bruins led by 13 with 9:31 to play. Six players fouled out of this game, three on each side.

8) Over last seven years, Big West has put seven different teams into the NCAA tournament; in these one-bid leagues, all that really matters in the conference tournament in March, not sure if thats a good thing, but it is what it is.

7) Best college basketball studio show is on FS1, with Steve Lavin/Jim Jackson analyzing games and Rob Stone. Good banter where you can learn stuff, and laugh at same time.

6) Mike Dunleavy Sr has coached 1,329 NBA games; quite a coup for Tulane to hire him as their basketball coach. Green Wave was 33-63 the last three years, 6-25 in Dunleavy?s first season last year, but they?re 11-4 this year, and 2-1 in the AAC with wins over Temple/SMU.

Big improvement for Tulane, who last finished over .500 in conference 11 years ago.

5) Cal Poly 80, Cal-Santa Barbara 79 OT? Gauchos led this game 23-2 on road Thursday nite, but let it slip away down the stretch. Not too many teams that are down 21 come back to win.

4) Colorado 90, Arizona State 81 OT? Sun Devils were unbeaten, ranked #4 in country, but now they?re 0-2 in Pac-12, after losing to Arizona/Colorado. ASU was 9-33 on arc in this game, was +7 in turnovers. Conference play is tough, much more competitive.

3) UNLV 82, San Jose State 76 OT? UNLV coaches dodged a bullet here; down a point with 0:16 left, Rebels called timeout, but star player McCoy didn?t check in quick enough during the timeout, so he had to stay on the bench, and since UNLV was out of timeouts, they played the most important possession of the game without their best player. No bueno.

UNLV tied the game, McCoy came back in and played the OT, and the Rebels survived to win a game that would?ve been a hideous loss. San Jose State is rebuilding- there was almost no one there? there had been a power outage on campus during the day. UNLV did its walk-thru in a mostly dark gym? seriously. TV announcer Drew Goodman filmed part of it with his phone.

2) Tennessee State 67, Jacksonville State 60? Gamecocks were 0-3 on foul line for the game; you don?t see that a lot- they were 10-24 on the arc. Tennessee State was 15-15 on the line; they shot 61% inside the arc. JSU may have been looking ahead to its game with Belmont Saturday.

1) Texas A&M scored 61.5 ppg in losing its first two SEC games, after an 11-1 start to their season, but think they get leading scorer Hogg back from suspension for their home game with LSU today. Hogg was 5th (and hopefully last) Aggie to be suspended this season- they just got couple guys back from knee injuries- they?re very good if they can just get back to full strength.
