Game 7 - Golden State Warriors vs. Houston Rockets

It all comes down to one game in the Western Conference Finals, as the Golden State Warriors visit the Houston Rockets in Game 7 on Monday night on TNT. The Warriors routed the Rockets on Saturday night and Golden State is a solid road favorite to win in Houston on Monday.

Both teams have injury questions, as the Warriors may be without defensive stalwart Andre Iguodala, while the Rockets could be missing guard Chris Paul.

Let?s look at the contest and NBA picks.

Golden State Warriors vs. Houston Rockets
Date and Time: Monday, May 26, 2018, 9:00 p.m. Eastern
Location: Toyota Center, Houston, TX
NBA Odds: Warriors -6.5, O/U 207.5
Warriors vs. Rockets TV Coverage: TNT

The Warriors have been up and down in this series and Game 6 on Saturday was a perfect example, as they started very poorly and trailed by 10 points at the half, but they were great in the second half and won the game by 29 points. "I have no clue why our team is like this," Steve Kerr said after the game. "It's kind of what we do." Klay Thompson led the way in Game 6 with 35 points, while Stephen Curry added 29 points. Golden State outscored Houston 93-47 over the last three quarters on Saturday night.

Despite getting throttled in the last three quarters, the Rockets are still very confident in their chances of winning on Monday. "Nothing changes for us. We know what we have to do," James Harden said to the media. "... We're still confident. We're a confident group. We've just got one chance."

Injury Report

The Warriors have been without forward Andre Iguodala for the last three games, as he has a bone bruise in his left knee. The Warriors have said that they are planning to be without Iguodala on Monday. Kerr said that Iguodala is still day to day because he has pain in the knee when running.

The Rockets missed Chris Paul on Saturday and his status for Monday is up in the air. Head coach Mike D?Antoni said Paul is receiving treatment "around the clock." ESPN reported on Sunday that Paul?s chances of playing were less than 50-50.

Key Stats

The Warriors are 7-21-1 ATS in their last 29 games following a pointspread cover. The Warriors are 6-21-1 ATS in their last 28 games following a straight up win of more than 10 points. The Rockets are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following a straight up loss.

Looking at the total, the Under is 5-1 in the Warriors last 6 road games. The Under is 16-7 in the Rockets last 23 home games. The Under is 7-2 in the last 9 meetings in Houston.

Warriors vs. Rockets Free Picks

I have had a lot of success picking games in this series and hope to close it out with a win on Monday. When it comes to Monday night there are a few things to consider. First, the number on Golden State is ridiculous. There is no way the Warriors should be laying 6.5 points on the road in this game. It is an overreaction to the blowout win in Game 6.

I think Golden State is the better team and they should win Game 7, but Houston is also a good team and they are playing at home. Teams playing at home in Game 7 in an NBA Playoff series win straight up 80% of the time.

They are 104-26 all-time and 30-12 since 2005. All of the value on Monday night is on Houston. I have had the under in almost every game of this series but the number has now finally been adjusted enough that I think there is value on the over. The total in the first two games of this series was 225.

It has been adjusted down throughout the series, as it was 219.5 for Game 5 and closeed at 214.5 for Game 6. It is now down to 207.5 for Game 7 and I think there is value on taking the over. I will go with Houston and Over the total on Monday night.

Warriors vs. Rockets ATS Pick: Rockets and Over the total.
Warriors vs. Rockets Score Prediction: Warriors 107, Rockets 106

Warriors top Rockets, will face Cavaliers
May 28, 2018

HOUSTON (AP) Stephen Curry and Golden State turned all those Houston bricks into a road back to the NBA Finals.

Kevin Durant scored 34 points, Curry sparked another third-quarter turnaround, and the Warriors earned a fourth straight trip to the NBA Finals by beating the Houston Rockets 101-92 in Game 7 of the Western Conference finals on Monday night.

The defending champions trailed by as many as 15 in the first half after falling behind 17 in Game 6.

Curry, who finished with 27 points, scored 14 of Golden State's 33 points in the third quarter as Houston's shooting didn't just go cold, it froze. The Rockets missed all 14 3-point attempts in that quarter as part of 27 misses from long range.

The Warriors will host LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 1 on Thursday night in the fourth straight matchup between the teams.

James Harden had 32 points as the top-seeded Rockets' bid to return to the finals for the first time since 1995 fell short without Chris Paul, who was nursing a hamstring injury.

The Rockets fell apart in the second half again after doing so in Game 6. The Warriors outscored Houston 122-63 in the second half of the final two games.

Golden State led by seven entering the fourth and pushed the lead to 10 on a 3-pointer by Klay Thompson with about 9 1/2 minutes left. Clint Capela made a hook shot for Houston but Durant hit a long 3 seconds later to make it 86-75.

The Rockets were behind by 13 after a 3 by Curry and had missed 27 straight 3-pointers when P.J. Tucker hit one from the corner to cut the lead to 89-79 midway through the quarter.

It was their first 3-pointer since one by Eric Gordon with about 6 1/2 minutes left in the second quarter that put the Rockets up 42-28.

Tucker's 3 was the first of seven straight points for Houston which cut the lead to 89-83.

But Durant scored six points in a 9-2 spurt after that which left the Warriors 97-85 with about three minutes to go.

Houston finally found a little offense after that, using a 7-2 run to cut it to 99-92, but their rally bid came up short.

Thompson added 19 for Golden State after scoring 35 in the Game 6 win and the Warriors got a fourth straight start from Kevon Looney with Andre Iguodala sitting out again with a bone bruise on his left leg.

After being down by 10 at halftime of Game 6, the Warriors trailed by 11 entering the third quarter on Monday night. Golden State opened the third quarter with a 10-4 run to cut the lead to 58-53 after a 3-pointer by Nick Young with about eight minutes left in the quarter.

Tucker made one of two free throws and the teams exchanged layups before Golden State scored nine straight points, with two 3s from Curry, to take a 64-61 lead.

Harden made two free throws before Curry scored eight points in a row, highlighted by a 3-pointer which bounced high off the rim before falling back in, to make it 72-63 with just over two minutes left in the quarter.

Golden State scored 33 points in the third quarter for the second straight game while Houston managed just 15 points on Monday night after it scored 16 in the third in Game 6.

TIP-INS

Warriors: Curry went to the locker room with trainers between the first and second quarters, but returned to the bench with about 10 minutes remaining in the second quarter and soon returned to the game. ... Thompson picked up his third foul with about 8 1/2 minutes left in the first quarter and sat out most of the period. ... Draymond Green had 10 points, 13 rebounds and five assists.

Rockets: Houston fell to 6-5 all-time in Game 7s and 4-2 at home. ... Capela finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds. ... Tucker had 14 points and 12 rebounds.

UP NEXT

The Warriors host Game 1 of the finals on Thursday and Game 2 on Sunday.

Tuesday?s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but??

13) What genius decided the Cubs had to play a day game in Pittsburgh Monday after they played a home game on ESPN Sunday night? That makes no sense.

If the Pirates have to play a Memorial Day afternoon home game, at least make it a 4:00 first pitch. Or don?t schedule the Cubs to play at night on Sunday.

12) Nightcap of the Mets-Braves day/night twinbill started at 10:07 pm, after a 3-hour rain delay. With Tuesday?s weather forecast not looking so good, they tried like hell to get both games in Monday,

11) Pablo Sandoval played second base Sunday night, third time in 1,117 major league games he played there, first time he started a game at second.

10) Weird baseball injury late Monday night; Rhys Hoskins is batting in 9th inning with a 1-2 count; he swings and misses, but ball hits him on arm, bounces up and hits him in the face.

Umpires ruled it a foul ball, which was wrong; game should?ve ended there. Hoskins has to leave the game because he got drilled in the face with a deflected pitch, Pedro Florimon wound up striking out in his place as the Dodgers rallied late for a 5-4 win.

9) In his last seven starts, Jacob deGrom has allowed two runs in 43.1 IP, but has only two wins in those seven games. Mets scored total of nine runs in his last four starts.

8) Mets? relief pitchers have already had more at-bats this season than all of last season. They?ve had 20 this year on May 28- they had 18 in all of 2017.

7) Phillies will face Clayton Kershaw Thursday, as he comes off the disabled list, and might very well face Madison Bumgarner Friday, as he comes off the DL. Not the best luck there.

6) ESPN?s Steve Levy and Barry Melrose had a live shot from the Stanley Cup finals at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas with??.comedian Carrot Top.

5) Not sure of the exact crowd, but looked like they had over 10,000 fans in Washington to watch the hockey game on the big screen in the Capitals? arena. They went home unhappy as the Golden Knights won 6-4.

4) San Diego Padres are 7-3 this season when Tyson Ross starts, 15-30 when anyone else starts.

3) Golden Nugget Casino in Las Vegas is running a football pool again this fall; $1,000 per entry, you pick seven games a week, but you can use NFL or college games. The Westgate pool is five games per week, but only NFL games and it is $1,500 an entry.

2) Warriors 101, Rockets 92? Houston got outscored 122-63 combined in the second half of Games 6-7.

1) Happy 80th birthday to the great Jerry West, who still works as a consultant for the Clippers.

Round 4: It's Cleveland vs. Golden State
May 29, 2018

Here we go again.

And again.

And, well, again.

Round 4 - as many predicted, and others probably lamented - is happening. Cleveland and Golden State will meet for the fourth straight year in the NBA Finals, the Warriors looking for a third championship in that span and LeBron James and the Cavaliers trying to wrestle the crown away just as they did in the 2016 series.

On one side, the best team of this era.

On the other, the best player of this era and maybe any era.

Game 1 will be hosted by the Warriors at Oracle Arena on Thursday night.

''You've got to appreciate the moment,'' Warriors guard Stephen Curry said. ''Somebody asked, `Four years in a row getting to the finals, do you appreciate it?' Yes.''

Both teams are entering this title matchup with injury concerns. Cleveland's Kevin Love is in the concussion protocol and will need to complete a series of tests before he's cleared to return, and Golden State's Andre Iguodala - a former NBA Finals MVP - wasn't able to finish the Warriors-Rockets series because of a bone bruise in his leg.

The Warriors hoped Iguodala would return to the Houston series, but his progress stalled.

''That's just not an easy injury to predict in terms of recovery,'' Warriors coach Steve Kerr said.

There wasn't a lot of similarity in Cleveland's and Golden State's seasons, but their last few days have been mirror images of one another - both teams had to win Game 6s at home to fend off elimination, then had to go on the road and prevail in Game 7s to win their respective conference finals.

''One of the most challenging seasons I've had,'' said James, who may be playing the best basketball of his life right now at the end of his 15th season.

Here's some of what the Cavaliers have dealt with since Golden State-Cleveland III ended last June: Kyrie Irving got traded for Isaiah Thomas over the summer, coach Tyronn Lue had to miss time to deal with health issues, Love missed two months, they lost 11 games by 16 or more points, revamped their roster in February and spent much of the season unable to guard anybody.

They're in the finals again anyway, led by someone who will play in the last series of the season for an absurd eighth consecutive year.

''It's been a roller coaster,'' said James, who is seeking a fourth ring in his ninth finals appearance overall. ''It's been good, it's been bad. It's been roses. There have been thorns in the roses. There's been everything that you can ask for.''

This wasn't all peaches for Golden State, either. The Warriors didn't get the No. 1 seed out West, lost Curry to a knee injury late in the regular season, lost 10 of their final 17 games and got pushed to the brink.

''I'm glad we're going back,'' Warriors forward Kevin Durant said.

The Warriors swept the two regular-season meetings with the Cavaliers, winning by seven at home on Christmas Day (without Curry) and prevailing by 10 in Cleveland about three weeks later.

Film-wise, those two games are meaningless now. Of Cleveland's five leading scorers against Golden State this season, three no longer play for the Cavaliers. James and Love combined to score 100 points in the two games, but Dwyane Wade, Jae Crowder and Isaiah Thomas were all shipped elsewhere by the Cavs in a series of trade-deadline moves.

''We obviously know what LeBron's capable of,'' Curry said shortly after the Warriors' Game 7 win at Houston ended. ''It's a new team over there, so the other guys, we've got to lock in on their tendencies. But we'll worry about that when we get home.''

If the Cavaliers win this championship, it might be time to declare the regular season irrelevant.

Cleveland was only 50-32 this season. Should James and his mates get it done, that would be the second-worst, regular-season record for an eventual champion in the last 40 seasons. Houston went 47-35 on the way to the 1995 title; to find another champion who was worse, go back to Washington in 1978 when the Bullets were a mere 44-38.

''Everybody doubted us,'' Cavaliers forward Jeff Green said. ''Everybody had their opinions on what our team was, what we would do, what we can't do, from the start. ... And now, I mean, we're where we want to be. We're where we set out to be and where we knew we could be at this point.''

Same goes for the Warriors. This season was no cakewalk for them, either.

''We've been through a lot with this team,'' Warriors guard Klay Thompson said. ''Believe it or not, it's not all success with the Warriors. We got our bumps throughout the season. But to get to this point again, we earned it.''

And now it's time for one of these teams to earn a title.

Again.

Warriors back in finals again after test
May 29, 2018

HOUSTON (AP) The Golden State Warriors, so used to making things look easy, overcame one of their toughest tests to return to the NBA Finals.

They climbed out of huge holes in the last two games of the Western Conference finals to beat Houston, but may have to play in the first half the way they have after halftime if they hope to knock off LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers and repeat as champions.

''They played a great series, they made us work for everything ... I'm just proud of the way we battled,'' Klay Thompson said. ''We've been through a lot with this team, and believe it or not, it's not all success with the Warriors.''

''We've got our bumps throughout the season,'' he continued. ''But to get to this point again, we earned it.''

Without Andre Iguodala again, the Warriors shook off another terrible first half in Game 7 on Monday night to rally for a 101-92 victory that made them the fifth team in NBA history to advance to the finals in four straight seasons.

Golden State trailed by 11 at halftime after being behind at the break by 10 points in Game 6, becoming the first team to win multiple elimination games in the same series when trailing by double digits after two quarters.

Coach Steve Kerr lamented that Golden State's first half on Monday night was ''one of the most bizarre first halves'' his team has played since he's been with the Warriors and joked that he thought of resigning at halftime before getting serious.

''Our talent took over,'' Kerr said. ''It's as simple as that. We've got three of the best shot-makers in the league ... we stayed with it.''

The trio - Thompson, Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant - combined to score 47 points in the second half to pull away from a Rockets team that missed 27 straight 3-pointers from the second quarter to the halfway mark of the fourth quarter.

''I think it was just a level of experience and maturity from our group that helped us get to the finish line,'' Curry said.

The Warriors outlasted the Rockets despite missing Iguodala for the last four games with a bone bruise on his left leg. It's unclear if the 2015 NBA Finals MVP will return for Game 1 on Thursday, but if he does it will give Golden State a boost in trying to slow down James.

While Golden State certainly isn't happy the way it started the last two games, its ability to turn things around in the second half gives the Warriors confidence heading into the next challenge. The Warriors outscored Houston 122-63 in the second half of the final two games.

Houston gave them a much bigger test than the Warriors have had in quite some time and this series was their first with three losses since the Cavaliers won the 2016 finals 4-3.

''Just keeping our composure was big for us the entire series,'' Curry said. ''Whether we figured it out, win or lose, we showed a lot of fight, a lot of grit and resiliency to stay positive as we went through the series no matter what the situation was.''

Thompson was clear that the mistakes he made before halftime on Monday night won't happen again. After scoring 35 points in Game 6, he collected three fouls in less than four minutes to force him to sit out most of the first quarter.

''I cannot do that next series, and that's a big no-no,'' he said. ''Learned my lesson. Those guys are great at drawing fouls but I've got to be smarter than that. That really hurt. I hated not being out there when I was supposed to.''

Curry, before he could look forward to the finals, he took some time to reflect on what it took to get past the Rockets and appreciate the accomplishment of having another shot at the title.

''This was a part of our story that we hadn't been through before,'' he said. ''Our backs against the wall, not having home-court advantage, needing to win two games to keep ourselves alive. This is a true testament to how hard it is to get to the finals, how hard it is to have a chance to play for a championship.''

Wednesday?s List of 13: Mid-week musings??.

13) Guy at South Point Casino Tuesday bet $90,000 on Golden State to win the NBA Finals; if they do win, he wins $10,000. Risking $90K to win $10K makes for a long couple weeks until the deed is actually done.

12) Houston Rockets missed 27 straight 3-pointers Monday night; read somewhere on the Interweb that their odds of missing 27 straight 3-pointers was something like 70,000-1.

During the time the Rockets were going 0-27, Golden State was 13-23 behind the arc.

11) Dodgers? first 25 wins this season were won by 15 different pitchers, which is kind of hard to believe. Had to double-check that, but it is true.

10) When major league teams play a doubleheader, the two home plate umpires do not work the other game.

9) World Series of Poker started Tuesday; will be 78 events from now until July 17. Few years ago, I was staying at the Rio and walked around the World Series for a half hour or so- wasn?t much fun watching other people play cards.

Very quiet room though; this huge floor of a convention center filled with card tables- the only sound you hear is chips clicking together.

8) Why people buy ?conference championship? t-shirts? Why? Wait to see if your team wins the league championship; thats the t-shirt you want. If your team loses in the finals, then you go back and buy the conference champ t-shirt, if you want.

7) In 22 road games, Aaron Judge is hitting .221 with three homers, seven RBI.

In 30 home games, he is hitting .337 with 12 homers and 33 RBI.

6) Giants? P Dereck Rodriguez made his MLB last night in Denver, after Jeff Samardzija left the game after the first inning with a shoulder issue. Dereck is the son of Hall of Fame catcher Pudge Rodriguez.

5) Mets put Noah Syndergaard on the DL Tuesday morning with a sprained ligament in a finger on his pitching hand, then oft-injured Steven Matz left Tuesday night?s game with an injury, apparently a blister on his pitching hand.

4) Glad to hear the 76ers? coach Brett Brown got a 3-year contract extension; he coached thru lot of losing seasons but then finally got to enjoy success this season. Good for him.

3) Atlanta Braves started eight different pitchers in their last 11 games.

2) Going into Tuesday?s game, Dodgers had been without Clayton Kershaw for 24 games. In those games, LA?s starting pitchers had a 2.98 ERA, 1.12 WHIP.

1? NC State hasn?t won a conference title in football, basketball or baseball since 1992.

Why the Golden State Warriors will win the NBA Finals
May 29, 2018

If there is a glaring hole on Golden State's championship resume, it's that the Warriors have never gone back-to-back.

That will change.

The Warriors are about to win their second straight NBA championship and their third in the last four seasons - all of them coming at the expense of the Cleveland Cavaliers, who won't have enough even if LeBron James plays to the absolute utmost of his capabilities. The Warriors have home-court advantage, and have three of the best four players who will appear in the series.

They're just too good to lose.

If they were going to lose, it would have been in the Western Conference finals against the Houston Rockets. Houston was a team that was built for one purpose - beating the Warriors. And the Rockets might have done it, too, had Chris Paul's hamstring not popped in the final seconds of Game 5 and forced him to the sideline for the rest of the series.

Golden State rallied in both Game 6 and Game 7, as Paul looked on helplessly. Yes, the Warriors caught a huge break. They won't waste this chance.

The teams have changed mightily over the last four seasons. There were 20 players who appeared in first Cavaliers-Warriors game of the 2014-15 season - only eight of them will be in uniform during this series. Kevin Durant is in Golden State now, Kyrie Irving isn't with the Cavaliers anymore, the benches are very different particularly in Cleveland's case.

But the principals are still there: James, Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green.

And over these four years since James returned to northeast Ohio, the Warriors are 17-9 against the Cavaliers. Golden State needed six games to beat Cleveland for the title in 2015, five games last season and if Andrew Bogut didn't get hurt in Game 5 of the 2016 Finals the Warriors - who ended up blowing a 3-1 lead that year - probably would have won that series as well.

James might be playing the best basketball of his life. That's why Cleveland is still in these playoffs.

Even he won't be able to save the Cavs this time.

Cleveland looked like a team that couldn't guard anyone in the regular season, and to its credit has greatly improved on that end of the court during this postseason. But facing Golden State will be such a bigger challenge than Indiana, Toronto and Boston could provide. And if the Warriors get Andre Iguodala back, their spacing will be even better and put further demands on the Cavs.

The Cavs won't have any pressure on their shoulders. The Warriors will have it all, but after Curry, Durant and Thompson found a way to rally from 15 points down in Houston to win a Game 7 on the road and capture the Western Conference, Golden State will come into this series brimming with confidence.

That confidence will keep growing until they get handed another Larry O'Brien Trophy.

The pick: Warriors in five.

Warriors made heavy favorites
May 29, 2018

Golden State Warriors Are Massive Favorites in NBA Finals

The Cavaliers Have Their Work Cut Out For Them?

After a pair of absolutely thrilling Game 7?s, we have the fourth straight rematch of the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Golden State Warriors that pretty much half of everyone I talk to wanted. Most people are like ?Man, I just want something different!? That?s fine, but there?s literally nothing as compelling as LeBron versus Golden State. For now, it?s the best we can get.

The Warriors have been inserted as insane -1000 favorites to win the 2018 NBA Finals, facing a Cleveland team that is listed at +725. All people want to talk about is ?sweep or no sweep? and that?s fine. It?s very difficult to suggest that we?re not looking at another squash compared to what we witness last season.

Some are attributing Golden State?s fourth appearance in the Finals to luck, and that?s fair given that the Rockets went 0-for-27 from beyond the arc in an historically abysmal shooting performance that came at the worst possible time. I?ll agree that some of that is just pure, bad luck and the Rockets faced quite a bit of that with some iffy foul calls and the loss of CP3.

But then again, this is the Houston Rockets we?re talking about. They?re not closers and never really have been. That?s why Chris Paul was brought in, and hopefully stays. You can easily make the argument that this series has a different ending if Paul doesn?t rip his hamstring to shreds. However, you can just as easily say that the Warriors were never going to lose or that they had to overcome the loss of Andre Igoudala. ?What if? arguments are stupid in that way.

2018 NBA Finals Schedule
Game 1 ? Cleveland at Golden State -12.0 (Thu, May 31st)
Game 2 ? Cleveland at Golden State (Sun, June 3rd)
Game 3 ? Golden State at Cleveland (Wed, June 6th)
Game 4 ? Golden State at Cleveland (Fri, June 8th)
Game 5 ? Cleveland at Golden State (Mon, June 11th)
Game 6 ? Golden State at Cleveland (Thu, June 14th)
Game 7 ? Cleveland at Golden State (Sun, June 17th)

The fact remains that Golden State and Cleveland are back at the pinnacle, and no matter how bored you are with these two consistently clashing, it?s a cool moment to enjoy as a fan. Four straight times? That?s never happened before, though the Celtics-Lakers met four times in five years in the 1960?s.

Wrinkles abound in this series. LeBron has seriously never looked better, but his supporting cast hasn?t looked this bad since 2007. Kevin Love is hurt and still middling his way through the concussion protocol. Outside of sweeping a Toronto Raptors team that was crippled by PSL (post-season LeBron) disorder, the Pacers and Celtics pushed Cleveland to seven games. Both nearly won it.

Nothing that Cleveland has dealt with in the playoffs is on the level of the Golden State Warriors, but this particular defending champion looks?tired. They?re most certainly the better team in the 2018 NBA Finals. But they don?t have that killer instinct that they rampaged the playoffs with last year while going 16-1 SU in 17 games. Everybody?s stolen at least a game from them.

Trying to convince yourself that Cleveland can win this series feels like a losing battle. Even the Rockets were being pegged as +7.5 road dogs in the Western Conference Finals, and that was with Chris Paul in the fold. Cleveland is already a +12 point dog in Game 1 and even that feels sort of generous.

Igoudala being injured and the Warriors not really having any semblance of low-post defence seems inconsequential given how much shooting they have. I mean, even Nick Young helped contribute in a minute, momentum changing way that had a tangible impact. The only thing that could really pave the way for Cleveland being competitive in this series is an injury and that seems immensely implausible.

The distance between Cleveland and Golden State, even with all the little things that seem to ding up the Warriors, is negated simply by the lack of Kyrie Irving on the Cavaliers. If the Cavs couldn?t even touch the Warriors last year when they had him, why would you believe that they could this year with a team that is older, slower, less dynamic and just struggled against a categorically awful Eastern Conference side of the bracket.

The oddsmakers don?t. You probably shouldn?t either.

That doesn?t means you shouldn?t watch it. At the very least, the lines on this series are intriguing, and the Warriors have been softer on the ?crushing opponents? side of things than years past. If Cleveland has any value in this series, it?s as a road dog because we all already know how this series is going to end.

Odds against Cavs in NBA Finals
May 29, 2018

CLEVELAND (AP) The odds are longer than a Stephen Curry 3-pointer, Kevin Durant's wingspan or Draymond Green's catalog of technical fouls.

LeBron James and the Cavaliers are being given little - or no - chance of winning their fourth straight NBA Finals matchup against the Golden State Warriors, who have been installed by Las Vegas bookmakers as the heaviest favorites in the past 16 years.

Wanna bet?

The Warriors are 12-point favorites to win Thursday's Game 1, the largest spread in a Finals game since 1991, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

Cleveland coach Tyronn Lue isn't blinking.

''We're all focused on winning a championship,'' Lue said Tuesday before the team flew to California. ''We played our best basketball going into the playoffs. We've gotten better and better throughout the course of the playoffs. Our main focus and our main objective is to win a championship, so we can't worry about what the outside guys are saying and who's being picked. We know what we have here and what we're trying to do.''

Cavs vs. Warriors, Part IV: an expected conclusion to an unpredictable season.

Lue said All-Star forward Kevin Love remains in concussion protocol and his status for the series opener is in question. Love sat out Cleveland's Game 7 win at Boston on Sunday after suffering a head injury when he and Celtics rookie forward Jayson Tatum accidentally banged heads during the opening minutes of Game 6.

Love was replaced in the starting lineup by veteran Jeff Green, who stepped up and scored 19 points as the Cavs completed their comeback after trailing 2-0 and 3-2 in the series.

Love is expected back for the Finals, and Lue needs his experience against the Warriors, who like the Cavs rallied to win the Western Conference finals by taking Game 7 on the road.

There was a moment when it looked as if both Cleveland and Golden State could miss the Finals.

It disappeared quickly,

''They've been tested. We've been tested,'' Lue said. ''They've been to Game 7s. We've been to Game 7s. We've won championships and they've won championships, so they understand what it takes and they knew what it took.''

Since the playoffs opened, Cleveland has embraced the ''Whatever It Takes'' mantra that began as a catchy organizational slogan and morphed into a way of survival.

The Cavs have twice been pushed to seven games, overcome injuries and gotten much-needed contributions to ease the burden on James from role players Green, Jordan Clarkson and Larry Nance Jr.

However, in this series when every possession will be magnified, Lue will count on four players who have been around since the Cavs first met the Warriors in the 2015 Finals.

And because they won a championship in 2016 together, the core four of James, Love, J.R. Smith and Tristan Thompson share something special.

''Just having these guys here who have been through it, been through the tough times, been through the great times as well, this is a bond that can't be broken,'' Lue said. ''Just reminds me a lot of guys I played with back in the day when you see Horace Grant, Robert Horry, Derek Fisher, just something about winning a championship with those guys that you will never forget, and it's a bond that can't be broken.''

While Love has been solid, Smith and Thompson haven't always come through this season for Cleveland.

One of the streakiest shooters in the league, Smith has had prolonged slumps. Thompson, who missed time with a severe calf injury, wasn't a factor until Lue started him in Game 7 of the Indiana series.

Lue never lost faith in either player. It's a trust that can't be measured.

''I'm always going to stick behind my guys,'' Lue said. ''Even when they're struggling, I just have confidence and a belief that when we need those guys, and we call on those guys, they'll be ready and they'll produce. You've seen that throughout the course of the playoffs this year and you've seen it the last three years, that those guys are up for the challenge. They rise to the occasion. And just because a guy is not playing well, you can't give up on a guy.

''You gotta give those guys a chance, especially when you've been there before with them and you know who they are.''

Unlike the past three Finals, Lue won't have Kyrie Irving, traded to Boston last summer.

The All-Star point guard was Cleveland's not-so-secret weapon, the one the Cavs turned to in order to spell James and keep the Warriors off-balance.

''He allowed us to go one on one against the mismatches and can't nobody stop him one on one,'' Lue said. ''We're gonna miss that, but we're just going to have to play a different style of basketball without him being here.''

Now that's a safe bet.

20-1? Rickie Fowler

25-1? Henrik Stenson

Quote of the Day
?There remains a fundamental question the owners are going to have to address. When you take away the home plate umpire?s control over the strike zone, you take away a principal piece of his authority in terms of managing the whole game. You really need to think carefully about whether you want to make that change.?

Thursday?s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud

13) Didn?t write about this yesterday because I was trying to fully grasp whats going on, but there are strange doings on social media this week. Apparently 76ers? GM Bryan Colangelo was discovered to be running five burner Twitter accounts, which did various things that a GM shouldn?t be doing, like disclosing players? medical information and ripping his predecessor.

12) 76ers put out a statement saying they?re investigating the whole thing.

Joel Embiid said ?I talked to him and he said that he didn?t say that. He called me just to deny the story. Gotta believe him until proven otherwise. If true though, that would be really bad.?

One thing no one in Philly wants to do is tick off Embiid.

11) There are 30 teams in the NBA- their draft is two rounds, so that is 60 guys who will get drafted in late June.

Last I heard, 77 kids have bolted college early for the NBA; when you add in foreign players and international players, going to be lot of disappointed kids after the draft. G-League draft will have lot of recognizable names in it.

10) Cleveland Browns? DB Demarious Randall tweeted this week that if the Cavaliers beat Golden State in the NBA Finals, he would buy everyone who re-tweeted his tweet a Cavaliers? jersey (they cost around $100).

Well, 831,404 re-tweeted his tweet, and since Randall doesn?t make anywhere near $9M a year, he had to use the ?obviously it was a joke? line, referring to his offer to buy lot of jerseys.

9) Did some research this week; looking at which umpires call the highest %age of strikes, Here is part of what I found. Most every umpire is somewhere around 17%.

Highest %age of strikes called (for starting P?s only):
Culbreth 20.8%, Greg Gibson 20.6%, Nelson 19.9%, Lentz 19.5%

8) Lowest %age of strikes called (for starting P?s only):
Reynolds 14.4%, Woodring 14.9%, Bucknor 15.4%, Welke 16.0%

7) Duke, Northwestern, Purdue are leading the race for Clemson transfer QB Hunter Johnson, who has to sit this season out, but then will have three years to play. Johnson was rated asthe #2 pro-style passer in the 2017 recruiting class

6) Cubs scored 8+ runs in seven of Jon Lester?s 11 starts.

5) Dodgers put P Kenta Maeda (hip strain) on DL.
Phillies put LF Rhys Hoskins (jaw) on DL.

4) Washington 3, Vegas 2? This is just third time since 2005 that Stanley Cup finals are tied 1-1.

3) Nevada Wolf Pack got very good news Wednesday, as the Martin twins are coming back to Reno to play another year of ball, which makes the Wolf Pack a top 20 team.

2) The baseball commissioner hinted this week that calling balls/strikes via automation isn?t impossible in the future. Does this guy even like baseball? Why would this be a good idea?

Having humans call balls/strikes is as important as having humans play the game.

Call me paranoid, but if my favorite team the A?s was playing New York in the ALCS, with the big money TV ratings for the World Series at stake, do you think I?d be trusting that someone wasn?t rigging the automated umpire to favor New York? You bet your ass I?d think that.

1) If you want a laugh, find the front page of today?s New York Post. It has a picture of two people sitting in the Oval Office, after their discussion about prison reform. I?m not going to say anything else about it, other than you can find the picture on Twitter or the Post?s website.

Read the captions above the picture; classic New York Post stuff.

Game 1 - Cavaliers at Warriors
May 30, 2018

For the first time in the history of all four major professional sports (the NBA, NHL, NFL and MLB), the same two teams will meet in the NBA Finals to decide a league?s champion for the fourth straight year.

But Golden State vs. Cleveland IV nearly didn?t happen. The Cavaliers had to survive three elimination games, including a pair of Game 7?s. They had to weather multiple storms, trades, leaves of absence and controversies during a chaotic regular season.

As for the Warriors, they trailed Houston 3-2 in the Western Conference finals and faced considerable deficits in the first half of both Game 6 and 7. If not for an injury to the Rockets? perennial All-Star guard Chris Paul, who missed both of the series?s final two games with a hamstring injury, you know Houston would?ve had a great opportunity to advance past Golden State.

Whatever the case, the Cavs and Warriors are here and bettors are prepping for Round 4 of this rivalry. Game 1 is scheduled for Thursday night at Oracle Arena. Tip-off is slated for 9:05 p.m. Eastern on ABC.

As of Wednesday afternoon, most betting shops had Golden State (70-29 straight up, 43-55-1 against the spread) installed as a 12.5-point home favorite for the series opener. The total was 214.5 points and the Cavs were available on the money line for an enormous +700 return (paid $700 on $100 wagers).

The Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas opened the Warriors as 12-point home ?chalk? with a total of 215.5 on Tuesday morning. Jay Kornegay and his staff initially had Golden State favored by seven for first-half wagers, but that number was up to 7.5 on Wednesday afternoon.

Sportsbook.ag has the Warriors listed as huge -1100 favorites to repeat as NBA champs. The Cavs are massive +700 underdogs (risk $100 to win $700). The offshore website also has series props. For instance, if you?re bullish on LeBron James and Co., you can wager on Cleveland at -1.5 games (to win the series by Game 6 at the latest) for a +1500 payout (risk $100 to win $1,500).

On the flip side, you can trim a bit of the price off of the Warriors by backing them at -1.5 games for the series at a -600 price. Even better yet still expensive, Golden State is at a -250 price to win by -2.5 games (a four-game sweep or polishing the Cavs off in Game 5).

As for the distance of the series, Sportsbook has those options as well. For gamblers expecting a sweep (by either team), ?under? 4.5 games offers a +220 return (risk $100 to win $220). Bettors expecting the best-of-seven showdown to go deep can take ?over? 5.5 games at +165. For ?over? 6.5 games, the payout is +400.

After losing Game 4 to Houston at home (95-92), Golden State dropped a 98-94 decision at Toyota Center as a one-point road underdog. This put the Warriors? season ? and their quest to win a third NBA title in four years ? in doubt heading back home to Oakland for Game 6. However, Paul?s hamstring injury late in Game 5 prompted him to sit out.

This development prompted oddsmakers to make the Warriors 12.5-point home favorites for Game 6. Without Paul, Houston shockingly raced out to a 39-22 advantage at the end of the first quarter. Steve Kerr?s team would outscore the Rockets 29-22 to slice the deficit to 10 by intermission.

Klay Thompson hit a pair of treys early in the third quarter that shifted the momentum toward the home team. Golden State would surge into the lead with 3:35 left in the third quarter. It was all Warriors from there. They blasted Houston by a 31-9 margin in the final stanza en route to a 115-86 victory. (Yes, Houston backers were ahead of the number 29.5 points and ended up losing by 16.5 points.)

Thompson drained 9-of-14 attempts from 3-point range and finished with a game-high 35 points. Steph Curry added 29 points, six assists, five rebounds and three blocked shots, while Kevin Durant had 23 points, seven boards and four assists. Durant made only 6-of-17 field-goal attempts. Draymond Green produced four points, 10 rebounds, nine assists, five blocks and four steals.

After surviving a first-quarter debacle in Game 6, conventional wisdom indicated that Golden State would come out strong in Game 7 at Toyota Center. Or not!

Once again, Mike D?Antoni?s team made all the energy and effort plays early. Durant was forcing low-percentage shots and loafing back on defense. The crowd was electric and the Rockets led 24-19 going into the second quarter. They?d extend the lead to 11 for another double-digit advantage at halftime.

However, you could sense that Houston should?ve been up by more at intermission. Part of that blame can be pointed at the officials. James Harden was clearly fouled on a pair of 3-point launches, yet nothing was called and six free-throw attempts earned by Harden didn?t happen.

Then on a play in the third quarter, a foul was called on a Harden 3-pointer that was good. Again, he was clearly in the act of shooting, meaning the triple should?ve counted and Harden should?ve been headed to the charity stripe to potentially complete a four-point play. But the referee inexplicably ruled the foul was on the floor. Fortunately for Houston, it was in the bonus and Harden made both FTs. Nevertheless, another point was taken away, as was another free-throw attempt.

In the second half, Houston went ice cold. I?m talking North Pole without a jacket freezing. I thought Boston?s Terry Rozier struggled in Sunday?s Game 7 (and to be clear, much to my dismay as a Celtics? backer that night, Rozier did indeed struggle ? mightily!) when he went 0-of-10 from downtown. The Rockets nearly tripled that dismal effort by missing 27 straight 3-balls. Meanwhile, Curry buried 4-of-5 shots from long distance in the third quarter alone, scoring 14 of his 27 points.

After Harden dished to Clint Capela for a dunk that gave Houston a 61-55 edge, Golden State responded with a ruthless 17-2 run. Capela was substituted for at the next whistle after his dunk and was resting during this stretch. I felt D?Antoni waited entirely too long to put his big man back in the game and should?ve used a timeout earlier (to get Capela back in and halt Golden State?s sick surge). The Warriors enjoyed a 33-15 third-quarter advantage to take a 76-69 lead into the final stanza.

Houston trimmed the deficit to six at 89-83 with 5:07 remaining, but it would get no closer. Golden St. captured a 101-92 win to cover as a six-point road favorite. The 193 combined points dropped ?under? the 208-point total (which was the lowest of the series).

Houston backers merely lost by three points to the number, which undoubtedly left those bettors lamenting the no-calls on Harden and the bricks by the Rockets from 3-point land in the first 18 minutes of the second half.

Curry nearly went for a triple-double, tacking on 10 assists, nine rebounds, four steals and one block to his 27 points. Durant came on strong in the second half and finished with 34 points, five boards, five assists, three blocked shots and one steal. Thompson, who made 8-of-13 FGAs and 3-of-7 from downtown, had 19 points. Green was also in double figures with 10 points, 13 boards and five assists.

Jordan Bell, the Warriors? rookie center out of Oregon, didn?t score but certainly made his presence felt. His play in the postseason has earned the confidence of Kerr to give him major minutes. In fact, I won?t be shocked if we see Bell defending James at times during the Finals. He had five rebounds, three assists, two blocks and one steal in Game 7, but it was one particular play that stood out.

With the Warriors strangling Houston?s momentum in the aforementioned 17-2 run late in the third quarter, Curry drove to the hole before dishing to Bell in the corner. Bell caught and the ball and noticed Curry sprinting toward him. Instantly recognizing that the red-hot pure shooter was wanting a corner trey, Bell bounced the ball between his legs and stepped toward the baseline to set a screen on an oncoming defender. Curry caught the between-the-legs bounce pass perfectly in stride, squared his feet and launched a 3-ball that splashed the nets and left the crowd deflated.

Cleveland trailed Boston in the East finals throughout the series, although it twice pulled even at 2-2 and then 3-3 after winning and covering in Game 6. In fact, the home team had won outright and covered the number in the first six games of the ECF. Furthermore, the Celtics were 10-0 both SU and ATS at home in the postseason going into Game 7 at TD Garden.

Making matters worse for the Cavs, Kevin Love had suffered a concussion and was ?out.? This led to Boston being listed as a 2.5-point home ?chalk? at most spots.

Brad Stevens?s team came out strong and led 26-18 at the end of the opening quarter. Boston would build the lead to as high as 12 midway through the second at 35-23, but Cleveland answered with a 15-8 blitz to end the first half and slice the deficit to four.

Tyronn Lue?s club surged into the lead with 4:10 left in the third quarter. The Cavs built the lead to five before the C?s went back in front early in the fourth. With Cleveland leading by four midway through the final stanza, Boston?s Jayson Tatum drove hard to the rim and accomplished the unthinkable ? for anyone, much less a 19-year-old rookie ? by dunking with authority on James?s face.

With the poise of a 10-year veteran, Tatum didn?t lose his composure after sending the crowd into a frenetic frenzy. Instead, on the very next possession, he used a shot fake to shake a defender and then knocked down a go-ahead trey.

But the lead would be short-lived. Once the Cavs went in front 76-73 with 4:44 remaining, Boston missed nine shots in a row. Cleveland won by an 87-79 count, with the 166 combined points falling way ?under? the 197-point tally.

James produced 35 points, 15 rebounds, nine assists and two blocked shots, making 12-of-24 FGAs. Jeff Green?s offense was pivotal, as the Georgetown product scored 19 points and snagged eight rebounds. J.R. Smith (12 pts) and Tristan Thompson (10 pts, 9 rebs) were also in double figures.

Kerr?s squad is 37-13 SU and 21-28-1 ATS in its home outings.

Cleveland (62-38 SU, 40-59-1 ATS) owns a 25-25 SU record and a 23-27 ATS mark in its road assignments. The Cavs are in their richest underdog situation of the season. They?re 15-9 ATS in 24 games as underdogs, but this is their first spot as ?dogs of more than 7.5 points.

For the series opener, Love is listed as ?questionable? due to concussion symptoms. In 17 postseason games this year, Love has averaged 13.9 points, 10.0 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 0.6 steals per game. He has shot at just a 38.8 percent rate from the field and made only 34.6 percent of his 3-pointers.

Iguodala will miss his fifth straight game Thursday night due to a knee contusion sustained in Game 3 of the West finals vs. Houston. Draymond Green is dealing with an ankle issue from Game 7, but he?s listed as ?probable.?

VegasInsider.com?s Kevin Rogers points out that Golden State has come out strong in series openers in these playoffs and in the Finals against Cleveland over the past three seasons. Rogers said, ?Everyone knows how big of a favorite the Warriors are over the Cavaliers to capture their third title in four seasons. Cleveland has plenty going against them in this series and trying to control Golden State?s dynamic offense is one of those obstacles. The Warriors have eclipsed the 113-point mark in all three series openers this postseason, while beating the Cavaliers in Game 1 of the Finals in each of the past three seasons and covering the number as a favorite.?

The ?under? has cashed in five consecutive games for Golden State and went 6-1 in its WCF series vs. the Rockets. Going back further, the ?under? is on a 9-1 run in the Warriors? past 10 outings. They?ve seen the ?under? go 11-5-1 in 17 postseason games to date.

The ?under? 54-44-1 overall for the Warriors, 26-23-1 in their home contests.

The ?under? is 52-46-2 overall for Cleveland, 26-24 in its road games. The ?under? is 11-7 for the Cavs in these playoffs to date, 6-3 in their road assignments. They?ve seen the ?under? hit in each of their past four road outings.

Going back to the 2015 NBA Finals, these teams have met 24 times and the ?under? has gone 13-9 in those games with a pair of pushes. The ?under? cashed in both regular season encounters between the pair and the early money appears to leaning to the low side again.

BookMaker.eu opened Game 1 at 218 and the number had dropped to 214 ? at most betting shops as of Wednesday. VI?s Chris David weighed in on the total for Game 1.

He explained his stance, ?I thought the opening total was a fair number and I?m a little surprised by the early drop and perhaps bettors are going with what they just saw. We haven?t seen many shootouts in this year?s postseason and the ?under? has prevailed at a 43-35 mark and that includes an 11-3 mark in the conference finals. While I don?t believe we should ignore those numbers or the impressive job put forth by Golden State?s defense against Houston, I still believe the Warriors will have their way with Cleveland?s defense. They averaged 121.6 PPG in last year?s finals and this year?s defensive unit for the Cavaliers is much worse. The team total on Golden State is listed at 113 ? on Thursday and I expect the club to jump ?over? that number, something it has nearly done in Game 1 of its first three playoff series (119, 123, 113).

?Cleveland?s team total (100) isn?t high but it?s only eclipsed that number three times on the road in this year?s postseason, two of the efforts coming at Toronto. The stats on LeBron James in Game 1 openers haven?t been great but I?m betting on a different outcome in this Game 1. I feel the pressure is off him and just getting to this matchup has been an achievement in itself. I would ride the ?over? on the team total for the Cavs and also go against the line move and play the game high as well,? added David.

While David has a lean to the ?over? in the opener, he?s certainly going against the ?under? tendencies that we?ve seen in Game 1 over the finals recently. The low side has gone 10-3-1 in the last 14 openers in the finals and that includes a 2-1 mark in the last three years between Golden State and Cleveland.

**B.E.?s Bonus Nuggets**

-- Sportsbook.ag?s odds for Golden State to sweep the series are +225. For the Cavs to deal out broom treatment, gamblers can snag an unfathomable 200/1 payout.

-- Sportsbook has Durant as the -150 ?chalk? to win Finals MVP honors for a second straight year. Curry, who hasn?t yet the Finals MVP award, has the second-shortest odds at +160. James is next at +650, followed by Thompson (15/1), Green (20/1), Love (150/1) and Jeff Green (250/1).

-- Iguodala, who took MVP honors 2015, is joined by George Hill, J.R. Smith, Kyle Korver and Shaun Livingston with 500/1 odds. Nick Young is the long shot at 5,000/1.

-- Golden State is 6-2 ATS in its past eight head-to-head meetings with Cleveland.

-- The ?under? has cashed at an 8-2-2 clip in Cleveland?s last 12 games played at Golden State.

-- BetOnline.ag has odds for the team that LeBron will play for in the first regular-season game of 2018-19. The 76ers and Cavs are the +175 co-favorites. The Rockets have the next-shortest odds (+250), followed by the Lakers (+400), Warriors (16/1), Heat (20/1) and Clippers (25/1).

-- With the Game 7 win over Boston, LeBron?s teams now own a 6-2 all-time record in Game 7?s.

-- Stat line for Boston?s Al Horford in Game 7: 17 points, four rebounds, three assists compared to zero turnovers and one steal. Horford made 7-of-12 FGAs and 3-of-3 FTAs. In 19 postseason games, the two-time national-title winner from the University of Florida (who has helped his team to the playoffs in all 11 seasons he?s been in The Association) averaged 15.7 points, 8.3 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 1.2 blocked shots and 1.0 steals per game. Horford hit 54.4 percent of his FGAs, 34.9 percent of his treys and 82.7 percent of his FTs. He had a 63/32 assist-to-turnover ratio.

-- According to a tweet from Jon Campbell, a Sports Analyst at OddsShark.com, James?s teams during his storied career have posted an 18-23 SU record and a 17-22-1 ATS mark in the NBA Finals. The ?over? has hit at a 19-18-4 clip in those 41 contests.

-- LeBron obviously had the last laugh but I still can?t quit thinking about Tatum?s sick dunk. With a healthy Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward, in addition to a high first-round pick in the upcoming Draft, I like Boston to win it all next season.

-- There seems to be a lot of LeBron-MJ convo/debate out there lately. When James came in the league, I said he looks like Magic Johnson with more muscle, Larry Bird with more speed and quickness and a taller/stronger version of Michael Jordan. Still, until he collects another ring or two, this actually isn?t much of a conversation. And let?s not even get into how he had to ?go superteam? with Chris Bosh and D-Wade to get his first two titles. I take MJ over LBJ every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Warriors, Cavs earned fourth straight Finals the hard way
May 30, 2018

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Cleveland and Golden State were stressed and stretched to their limits in the conference finals this time around, leaving little time to recoup and prepare for their latest showdown in the NBA Finals.

''Splintered'' is how Stephen Curry described what he feared could happen in the second quarter of Game 7 at Houston, with the Warriors pushed to the brink by the Rockets.

So, Golden State held a serious team chat and got it together at last. LeBron James willed his Cavaliers back to the big stage with another spectacular performance against Boston.

''It was a special moment for us. And I think one that we'll look back, if we get the job done over these next two weeks, where, again, as an appreciation of all that goes into winning a championship,'' Curry said Wednesday, ''and doing it by committee and making sure every guy, whether you're playing well or not, or things are going your way or not, that we all bring something to the fold that have gotten us to four straight Finals.

''And we've done it by appreciating everybody that's a part of that group. I think that two and a half minutes was a special moment for us, and it should give us great momentum going into the series.''

Now, James and the Cavs and Curry and the defending champions find themselves in familiar territory, facing off in a fourth straight NBA Finals - just with far less prep time after each team played furious Game 7s on the road to get back here.

Cavs-W's, Act IV is a little bit different, indeed. Game 1 is Thursday night at Oracle Arena.

King James stands in the way of a Warriors repeat, just as he did in spoiling that quest for Golden State and leading the Cavs to a championship two years ago with a Game 7 win on the Warriors' home court, where they have currently won 17 of the last 18 postseason games.

James never counted out Golden State.

''Just going against the Warriors in the last three years in the Finals, I kind of figured or thought that they could get it done,'' he said. ''Just because of the 18 of a possible 21 Finals games that I've played against them in the last three years, I figured out that they could make it happen.''

Here are some things to watch for heading into the best-of-seven series:

JAMES' SHOT:
James isn't ready to make any bold predictions about how great he might be in his eighth straight Finals.

Yet the way he prepares, there's no doubt in his mind he will be ready when the ball tips.

''The level that I can play at is to be seen, but the level that I put into the game and put into my craft is who I am,'' James said. ''So numbers and things like that kind of take care of itself. But for me, I understand and I know how much I put into the game. So everything else is OK.''

NO REST FOR THE WEARY: With only two days between games after the Warriors eliminated the Rockets 101-92 on Monday night, Draymond Green is happy to have an opponent in Cleveland he knows so well.

''In recent years we've been kind of having a week off, at most, to prepare for the Finals. It's almost a day to prepare this time,'' he said. ''So it definitely helps knowing the opponent, knowing, obviously, everything stops and starts with LeBron, and trying to do what we can to make things tough on him, but also take other guys out of the game.''

The Cavs finished their series Sunday at Boston, so James spent a relaxing Memorial Day Monday with family having a barbecue.

INJURY WOES: Both teams face significant injury concerns: Golden State defensive stopper and 2015 Finals MVP Andre Iguodala was ruled out for Game 1 with a bone bruise in his left knee, while Cleveland's Kevin Love remains in the NBA's concussion protocol with his status uncertain.

GOLDEN STATE AMONG GREATEST: James considers Golden State among the greatest teams ever, and insists each side has earned this. James is ignoring the critics who say this annual matchup might be bad for basketball.

''Teams have had their opportunities to beat the Cavs over the last four years and teams have had opportunities to beat the Warriors over the last four years,'' James said. ''If you want to see somebody else in the postseason then you've got to beat `em.''

It's an annual tradition for LeBron James: The NBA Finals
May 30, 2018

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) LeBron James spent Memorial Day with his kids enjoying some barbecue. Once the grill got turned off, the television went on and he tuned in to study Game 7 of the Western Conference finals.

Golden State at Houston.

James had no doubt who would win.

''Going against the Warriors in the last three years in the finals, I kind of figured or thought that they could get it done,'' James said. ''Just because of the 18 of a possible 21 finals games that I've played against them in the last three years, I figured that they could make it happen. Just their championship DNA.''

He was right. And Warriors-Cavs IV now awaits.

The NBA Finals are now as much a part of James' calendar each year as birthdays and holidays. He's always there, now eight consecutive years and counting, the last four of those with the Warriors standing in the way of James and his Cleveland Cavaliers. Game 1 is Thursday night, and even with James playing at absurd levels the Cavs find themselves as significant underdogs.

James is averaging 34 points, 9.2 rebounds and 8.8 assists in these playoffs. Anything less than that, and he'd have a lot more time for those barbecues with his kids. And in this series, even more might be required if he's to win his fourth ring in the past seven years.

''He doesn't walk around acting like he's carrying a team, like he's carrying an organization,'' Cavaliers guard Kyle Korver said. ''He doesn't walk around like that. I mean, he knows he's LeBron James, and he knows who he is. But he's really for all of his teammates. He's always talking to guys, trying to help them get better. He's a really great leader.''

That's one of the countless areas where James has gotten better - one of the countless reasons why the finals are now an annual rite for him.

Warriors coach Steve Kerr remembers watching the last Miami-San Antonio title matchup in 2014 when the Spurs basically dared James to shoot the ball from the perimeter by sliding under every screen the Heat would set for him.

The Spurs won that series in five games. They made it look easy at times, too.

''Contrast that to now where he's shooting fadeaway 3s from 30 feet to close games out,'' Kerr said. ''I think his confidence level in his shot is the biggest thing. But I think it is pretty remarkable when you've got a guy who is already considered one of the top few players ever to play the game can make that much improvement late in his career. It's a testament to his work ethic and to his work on his skillset.''

The Warriors have more talent, by a very wide margin. They have four All-Stars - Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Kevin Durant and Draymond Green. They have former MVPs in Curry and Durant. They have a former Finals MVP coming off their bench, or rather they will when Andre Iguodala returns from the bone bruise that has kept him sidelined of late.

The Cavaliers have James.

That represents hope. He makes the Cavs better. He even makes the Warriors better.

''LeBron's one of those guys that in order for you to be great like that, you've got to do it, day after day after day,'' Durant said. ''A lot of people don't have that mental capacity to even think about being that great every day, you know what I'm saying? So that's inspiration right there. That's just motivation to be the best that you can be as well.''

Once that TV went on Monday night, James locked in on this series.

Around-the-clock treatment on his body Tuesday, including 4 1/2 hours of it on the team's flight to San Francisco. Treatment and workouts on Wednesday. Treatments and pregame shooting on Thursday. Then game time.

Unlike that Rockets-Warriors game, he doesn't know what will happen in Game 1.

But he's ready. He's always ready.

''The level that I can play at is to be seen, but the level that I put into the game and put into my craft is who I am,'' James said. ''So numbers and things like that kind of take care of itself. But for me, I understand and I know how much I put into the game. So everything else is OK.''

Andre Iguodala out for Golden State in Game 1 of NBA Finals
May 30, 2018

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Golden State forward Andre Iguodala will be out for Game 1 of the NBA Finals on Thursday night as he recovers from a bone bruise in his left knee that cost him the final four games of the Western Conference finals.

The Warriors said Iguodala, who was injured in Game 3 against the Rockets on May 20, was evaluated Tuesday and is making progress but still has the bruise and inflammation of the nerve surrounding his knee. Coach Steve Kerr has said Iguodala wouldn't play until he can run without pain. He will be re-evaluated ahead of Sunday's Game 2.

Kevin Love's status for Cleveland remained unclear as he went through the concussion protocol after he was injured in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals against Boston. He wasn't scheduled to attend media day Wednesday at Oracle Arena, where the Warriors host the series opener.

Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Favorites for the Memorial golf tournament this weekend:

12-1? Dustin Johnson, Jason Day

14-1? Justin Thomas, Justin Rose, Rory McIlroy

16-1? Jordan Spieth, Eldrick Woods

20-1? Rickie Fowler

25-1? Henrik Stenson

33-1? Matsuyama, Reed, Leishman, Watson

**********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud
