Preds edge Caps, win Presidents' Trophy
April 5, 2018

WASHINGTON (AP) Craig Smith scored twice and Ryan Johansen had the go-ahead goal late in the third period to help the Nashville Predators beat the Washington Capitals 4-3 Thursday night to clinch first place in the Central Division, the top seed in the Western Conference and the best record in the NHL.

Even though it'll be Pekka Rinne in net for the Predators when they open the playoffs next week, backup Juuse Saros stopped 28 of the 31 shots and captain Roman Josi scored on the power play to give them their first division title in 19 seasons of existence.

Nashville has a franchise-record 52 victories and will open the playoffs against the second wild card in the West as it tries to return to the Stanley Cup Final. The Predators clinched the Presidents' Trophy for the league's top record when Boston lost to Florida 3-2 later Thursday. Nashville watched from the arena as the Panthers scored late in the third period to top the Bruins.

Evgeny Kuznetsov scored twice and Alex Ovechkin added his NHL-leading 47th goal of the season for the Metropolitan-champion Capitals, who have nothing left to play for and could still face any of a handful of teams in the first round. Philipp Grubauer made 25 saves and strengthened his case to be Washington's Game 1 playoff starter over 2016 Vezina Trophy winner Braden Holtby.

DEVILS 2, MAPLE LEAFS 1

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - The New Jersey Devils are back in the playoffs for the first time since 2012.

Patrick Maroon set up second-period goals by Pavel Zacha and Miles Wood and the Devils ended a five-year postseason drought with the victory over Toronto.

Keith Kinkaid, the mainstay in goal since the end of January, made 31 saves as the Devils won their fourth straight and extended their points streak to eight games (7-0-1). He preserved the lead with a stop in close on Austin Matthews with just over seven minutes to play.

New Jersey is 10-2-1 in its last 13 in going from the worst team in the Eastern Conference a year ago to one that will get a chance to start playing for the Stanley Cup next week. After it was over, the players went to center ice and saluted the fans who were standing for much of the final minute.

William Nylander scored on a power play in the first period for Toronto to ice his second straight 20-goal season. Frederik Anderson was outstanding, making 37 saves, including saves on breakaways by Taylor Hall and Michael Grabner in the big second period.

The loss was only the fourth in 13 games (9-3) for the Maple Leafs.

FLYERS 4, HURRICANES 3

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Jakub Voracek scored with 5:45 left to lift Philadelphia past Carolina.

Claude Giroux, Ivan Provorov and Michael Raffl also scored for Philadelphia. The Flyers would have clinched a playoff spot if Boston beat Florida, but the Panthers topped the Bruins 3-2.

The Flyers seemed in great shape when Giroux put them up 3-2 with 9:42 remaining behind a wrist shot that beat goalie Scott Darling. It extended the Flyers captain's career-high totals to 31 goals and 98 points. The Hurricanes erased the lead when Brian Elliott let in his second soft goal of the game, this one Jordan Staal's backhander from a sharp angle near the side boards with 6:19 left.

Elliott returned after missing 25 games following core muscle surgery Feb. 13.

Klas Dahlbeck and Sebastian Aho also scored for Carolina.

PANTHERS 3, BRUINS 2

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - Jared McCann scored with 5:37 left and Roberto Luongo got the win in his 1,000th career game, helping Florida beat Boston to stay in playoff contention.

The Panthers trail Philadelphia by four points for the final Eastern Conference wild card and have two games remaining, including a matchup Sunday night with Boston. Florida needs to win both games and have the Flyers lose to the New York Rangers in regulation Saturday.

The 39-year-old Luongo became the third goalie to reach the 1,000-game mark, joining Hall of Famers Martin Brodeur (1,266) and Patrick Roy (1,029). He stopped 26 shots Thursday.

Aleksander Barkov scored his 100th career goal, and Frank Vatrano scored a goal against his former team for the Panthers. Danton Heinen and Ryan Donato scored for Boston.

PENGUINS 5, BLUE JACKETS 4, OT

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Phil Kessel scored 1:06 into overtime for Pittsburgh, and Columbus earned a point to clinch a playoff spot for the second consecutive season.

Kessel scored for the left circle for his second goal of the game and 33rd of the season. Conor Sheary tied it at 12:16 in the third period.

Patric Hornqvist and Kris Letang also scored, and Matt Murray had 26 saves for Pittsburgh. Zach Werenski, Matt Calvert, Boone Jenner and Cam Atkinson scored for Columbus.

JETS 2, FLAMES 1

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - Connor Hellebuyck made 31 saves to tie the record for victories in a season by an American goalie and Winnipeg beat Calgary for its fourth straight victory.

Hellebuyck has 43 victories to match the mark set by former Pittsburgh star Tom Barrasso in 1992-93.

Blake Wheeler scored his 23rd goal for his 90th point of the season, and Paul Stastny added a goal to help Winnipeg improve to 10-1-0 in its past 11 and 51-20-10 overall. Rookie Spencer Foo scored his first NHL goal in his third game for the Flames.

ISLANDERS 2, RANGERS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Thomas Hickey and Anthony Beauvillier scored 2:32 apart in the second period and the New York Islanders kept up their recent mastery of the Rangers.

Jaroslav Halak stopped 34 shots as the Islanders won for the 11th time in the past 12 meetings with the Rangers. They swept the four-game season series for the second time in the past three seasons, after never previously doing it since joining the NHL in 1972.

The Islanders are also 6-0-0 at home against the Rangers since moving to Barclays Center in 2015.

Kevin Hayes scored, and Ondrej Pavelec made 20 saves for the Rangers.

OILERS 4, GOLDEN KNIGHTS 3

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - Connor McDavid had three assists to push his NHL-leading points total to 106 and help Edmonton beat Vegas.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Matt Benning, Mike Cammalleri and Ty Rattie scored for the Oilers. They snapped a five-game losing skid. Brayden McNabb, Brandon Pirri and Oscar Lindberg replied for the Pacific Division-leading Golden Knights. They had won three in a row.

CANADIENS 4, RED WINGS 3

DETROIT (AP) - Nicolas Deslauriers' second goal put Montreal ahead late in the second period and the Canadiens held on to beat Detroit.

The Original Six teams are out of the playoff race, finishing up the season playing only for pride.

Brendan Gallagher and Artturi Lehkonen also scored and Antti Niemi made 23 saves.

Darren Helm, Tyler Bertuzzi and Dylan Larkin scored for Detroit.

Friday?s 6-pack

Major league batting averages the last seven years, for lefty hitters who pull the ball on the ground. Shifting has forced lefty batters to hit the ball in the air more.

2017 ? .197

2016 ? .193

2015 ? .207

2014 ? .208

2013 ? .222

2012 ? .221

2011 ? .235

Quote of the Day
?It?s the first time in my career where I make a 13 without missing a shot. Simple as that. I felt like I hit a lot of good shots and unfortunately the ball just didn?t want to stop. It?s just unfortunate, but that?s what it is.?
Sergio Garcia, after shooting 81 Thursday, including a 13 on the 15th hole

Friday?s quiz
Which major league team played in Kansas City before the Royals existed?

Thursday?s quiz

Clayton Richard of the Padres was once a backup QB at Michigan.

Wednesday?s quiz

Luxor is the Las Vegas hotel/casino that is shaped like a pyramid.

***********************

Friday?s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here??.

13) With 20 more days until the NFL Draft, it is beginning to look like Lamar Jackson will be the most interesting player to follow.

The Louisville QB was a really good college player- he won the freakin? Heisman Trophy, but his Wonderlic score wasn?t good and there are reports that when he was analyzing plays/concepts on the white board with coaches, he didn?t do well either, both major red flags for QB prospects.

Then there?s the thing about his mother being his manager which hasn?t helped anything.

12) Lot of outfielders now carry an index card in their back pocket to help them position themselves for different hitters.

11) Fresno State hired San Diego State assistant Justin Hutson as its new coach; he spent the last 12 years as an assistant in the Mountain West, for the Aztecs and at UNLV. He is considered to be a great recruiter? basketball people on Twitter were very enthusiastic about this hire.

10) I mentioned couple weeks ago how Texas-Arlington fired coach/alum Scott Cross despite his team going 72-33 the last three years; now it turns out the Mavericks? basketball budget is in the lower half?..of the Sun Belt Conference!!!!

School?s AD says he wants the basketball team to be like Gonzaga, but the school spends money like it is a bottom 50 team. No bueno.

Texas-Arlington?s basketball budget is $1.5M; Gonzaga?s is $7M.

9) Pretty good basketball tournament Nov 22-23 at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas; Michigan State, North Carolina, UCLA and Texas.

8) Oakland A?s did a logical thing and acquired OF Trayce Thompson off waivers from New York. Trayce will live in Oakland with his brother Klay, who plays across the parking lot from the Oakland Coliseum with the Warriors.

Trayce Thompson will likely only be in Oakland for 10 days or so, unless he makes a positive impression before the A?s need a 5th starting pitcher on April 17.

7) Oddsmakers put out over/unders for individual team totals for each NFL game; say Team A is a 3-point favorite over Team B and the total of 41, then Team A?s total would be 22 and Team B?s would be 19. You wager on stuff like this, if you live somewhere that has legal wagering (ahem).

Last year the Chargers led the NFL by allowing 4.59 points less per week than their opponents? over/under; Vikings were next at -3.88 per week.

6) Houston Texans allowed 4.2 ppg more than their opponents? total each week; Denver was 31st in the NFL, at +2.98 ppg.

5) As far as offense goes, he Rams scored 5.75 more ppg than the oddsmakers estimated to lead the league; Jacksonville was next, at +4.72 ppg.

4) Most disappointing offensive teams were Oakland at -4.14 ppg and Atlanta (-4.06).

3) I?m not a ?Get off my lawn!!!? guy on this subject, but this is an interesting fact, with the strikeout becoming so prevalent now.

In 1950, Yogi Berra went to the plate 656 times and struck out 12 times. Twelve.

He hit 28 homers, knocked in 124 runs and struck out 12 times.

2) Sergio Garcia had a rough day; he hit five balls in the water on the 15th hole and got a 13. He shot an 81, which isn?t good. Garcia can?t even go home when he misses the cut Friday; since he is the defending champ, he?ll present this year?s champ with the green jacket Sunday.

No one in Masters history had even gotten worse than an 11 on the 15th hole; Ben Crenshaw is one of the guys who got an 11 on #15.

To his credit, Garcia played the last three holes in -1.

1) Brewers? closer Corey Knebel hurt his hamstring in the 9th inning of Milwaukee?s loss to the Cubs last night. It didn?t look good. The game was 8-0 Cubs when he got hurt.

NHL betting cheat sheet and odds: How to bet hockey's final weekend
Monty Andrews

We?ve reached the final weekend of the NHL regular season. Before you place a single bet on hockey, make sure you know all the angles with our NHL betting cheat sheet.

Singing the Blues

The St. Louis Blues are on the brink of squandering an opportunity to participate in the Stanley Cup playoffs, but there's still time to salvage the season as the Blues visit the Central Division-rival Chicago Blackhawks on Friday night.

The Blues have lost four games in a row to remain one point behind the Colorado Avalanche for the second Western Conference wild card spot. The Avalanche have lost three consecutive games themselves. The Blackhawks are on the outside of the playoff picture but would love to play the spoiler role in this one. St. Louis is a +4,000 long shot to win the Stanley Cup championship at SportsInteraction.

Vegas finale

The Vegas Golden Knights wrap up one of the most successful inaugural seasons in the history of pro sports when they square off against the Flames in Calgary Saturday night. The Golden Knights exceeded even the loftiest expectations this season and go into the final weekend having already secured the Pacific Division title with 51 victories and 109 points. They also brought a windfall for Sin City supporters, earning more than +18 units on the season ($1,800 if you bet $100 on each of their games).

Even more impressively, Vegas has remained a betting favorite from start to finish and goes into Friday with +700 odds to do the unthinkable and win the Stanley Cup in its first season of existence - the fourth-best odds of any team in the league.

Big finish

There's just one game on the final day of the regular season and it could be a big one, as the Boston Bruins entertain the Florida Panthers. This one could have significance for both teams. The Bruins come into the final three days of the regular season tied with the Tampa Bay Lightning atop the Atlantic Division, with both teams having two games left to play.

The Panthers enter the weekend having won three in a row and they'll need two more victories, combined with a Philadelphia Flyers regulation loss Saturday afternoon to the Rangers, to squeak into the final Eastern Conference wild-card spot.

Injury updates

* Anaheim Ducks forward Patrick Eaves will not return to the team this season. Eaves has appeared in just two games with the Ducks after being diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome in September Anaheim is +2,000 to win the Stanley Cup at SportsInteraction.

* Ottawa Senators forward Marian Gaborik will need up to eight weeks of recovery time after undergoing surgery to fix a herniated disc in his back. Gaborik has four goals and three assists in 16 games since joining the Sens in a trade with Los Angeles.

* A lower-body injury has forced the New York Islanders to shelf defenseman Johnny Boychuk for their final game of the season. Boychuk has appeared in just 58 games for the lottery-bound Islanders, recording six goals and 12 assists.

Stanley Cup odds

* The Nashville Predators remain the team to beat in the latest Stanley Cup futures odds. The Presidents' Trophy winners are installed at +400 to take home their first title in franchise history after coming up just short last season.

* Whoever emerges as the Atlantic Division champion this weekend will likely see an odds boost heading into the postseason. But for the time being, both the Tampa Bay Lightning and Boston Bruins are Stanley Cup co-favorites at +550.

* Fancy a three-peat? The Pittsburgh Penguins are paying out at +950 - the sixth-best odds in the league - to become the first team to win three consecutive Stanley Cup titles since the 1980s New York Islanders.

Betting trends

* The Overs have it. Barring an unprecedented run of low-scoring games, the Over will emerge as the stronger play this season. There have been 618 games to exceed the total compared to 598 Unders. Just 20 games remain in the regular season.

* Home favorites continue to be a superior play relative to the season average, with 65.5 percent of home-ice faves converting over the previous 30 days. That hot stretch has raised the overall season rate for home favorites to 60.7 percent.

* The Golden Knights are positioned to return the most value of any team during the regular season. Vegas enters the final stretch of the campaign at +18.12 units, comfortably ahead of the runner-up Winnipeg Jets (+16.84). New Jersey (+14.40) sits third.

NHL: Flyers, Panthers could play tiebreaker
April 6, 2018

If the Philadelphia Flyers and Florida Panthers are even in points, regulation and overtime wins, and goal differential at the end of the season, they will play a one-game tiebreaker to determine who goes to the playoffs.

The NHL announced the unlikely but possible tiebreaker Friday as Philadelphia had one game and Florida two remaining. For the tiebreaker to happen on Tuesday, the Flyers would need to lose their regular-season finale Saturday against the New York Rangers by exactly two goals and the Panthers would need to beat the Buffalo Sabres and the Boston Bruins in a shootout Saturday and Sunday.

In that case, Philadelphia and Florida would each have 39 regulation/overtime wins and a plus-1 goal differential over the season, since a shootout victory counts as a goal. The teams split their season series (which by rule eliminates the odd game between them to even out home ice) and the league does not have any further tiebreakers.

Philadelphia has 96 points to Florida's 92 and needs just a point against New York to clinch the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

This most recently happened in 2000 when the NHL announced Montreal and Buffalo would play a tiebreaking game if they finished the season tied for the final spot in the East. It did not come down to that, but it's the precedent the league used to make this decision.

The league contacted the teams and the NHL Players' Association before announcing the plan. After a coin flip was the mechanism in 2000, a lottery machine such as the one that determines the top three draft picks would be used this time to decide which team gets home-ice advantage.

Panthers general manager Dale Tallon declined comment and a Flyers spokesman said GM Ron Hextall was not speaking about the tiebreaker.

Given the tightness of the standings in the East and West, it's likely this situation spawns a longer list of tiebreakers beginning next season. Records against common opponents and within the conference could be used, as they are in the NFL.

Eastern Conference Favorites
April 6, 2018

Grading the Eastern Conference Heavyweights

I make no bones about touting the NHL playoffs as the most exciting gauntlet run that exists. In no other sport is the race so wide open in the post season due to the inherent nature of the sport itself. Those who are keen on hockey already know that this is the truth ? anyone can win. For bettors who are new to hockey, just accept it as fact.

The moneyline glory that comes flying across your face each and every night aside, the NHL has reached a form of parity that suggests that the top billed teams should be taking a fair crack at having their names etched on the Stanley Cup.

Currently, the Nashville Predators are listed as the presumptive favorites to win the title but a lot of that has to do with the fact that the Western Conference is watered down compared to the east. It?s a true pick-your-poison option of two in the west with Nashville and Las Vegas vying for your attention. Check out the NHL futures below. The next best bet in the west is the Winnipeg Jets at +1000.

Odds to Win the 2018 Stanley Cup

Nashville Predators +500
Tampa Bay Lightning +550
Boston Bruins +650
Vegas Golden Knights +650
Pittsburgh Penguins +900
Toronto Maple Leafs +1200

For that reason, much of the spotlight has been shone on the highly competitive Eastern Conference which has three teams that have played like contenders all year and a fourth who are the two-time defending champions. So how do they actually stack up against each other, and where is your money best suited in the NHL playoffs? Basically anywhere but Columbus, Philadelphia or New Jersey.

Boston Bruins (+300 to win Eastern Conference)

Zero weaknesses. That?s the best qualifier to describe the Bruins. Acquiring Nash at the deadline solidified a team that has a depth of riches in size, speed and brute force. After the deadline, the Bruins were briefly the Stanley Cup favorite but those odds have normalized greatly in the past few weeks.

The reason is that the blue line, which is still led by Zdeno Chara, has shown weaknesses against both Tampa and Toronto. Boston has allowed 20 goals against and scored 20 goals against those two teams. Speed seems to be their weakness, but that?s regular season play. In the playoffs, size and aggressiveness are absolutely essential and no team is more bruising than then Bruins. A solid play overall.

Tampa Bay Lightning (+275 to win Eastern Conference)

An absolutely scintillating offence that ranks first in the league has been matched by a less than stellar defensive effort. Tampa is a big soft for most people?s liking, which is exactly why sharps and handicappers tend to move away from them when it comes to the NHL playoffs. They rank 27th in both penalty killing and face offs, which is a must-haves in the post season.

That coupled with the questionable health of one Steven Stamkos makes the Lightning a vulnerable favorite. They receive these odds as the winningest team in the conference (and the league as a whole) but they might have run too hot during the regular season. Questions abound as to whether or not Andrew Vasilevskiy can really hold his own in the pressure cooker of the playoffs as well.

Toronto Maple Leafs (+600 to win Eastern Conference Finals)

The darling bet of the Eastern Conference has been the Leafs for the entire season. Nobody argued that they?d be this good eventually, it?s just that nobody thought it would happen so fast. Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner and William Nylander have turned this team in to a force of nature.

Toronto is a great team in the face-off circle, a high scoring offense that has depth on three lines and Freddy Andersen has blossomed in to a reliable netminder between the posts. Everything suggests that they?re a hard lesson or two away from being a real Stanley Cup contender, but that belies just how exciting this team is. Plus, I?m sure that this young squad hasn?t shaken the brutal series loss to Washington last year.

If anything, the kids in Toronto have grown like weeds and are undoubtedly a threat to steal the conference title. The odds here mean you don?t have to go nuts to win a nice chunk of change, and Toronto has shed their reputation as a failing franchise. This team is fantastic and the only reason the odds are here is because the team lacks some size and ferocity. They?re the inverse of the Bruins to a certain point, but that?s the great thing about the hockey playoffs ? teams can most certainly rise to the challenge.

NHL hockey has also changed over the years to value rosters like Toronto?s over the carnage inflicted by bigger, more violent squads. I?m not saying that they?re a lock, but they?re a great value play overall.

The tough part? Toronto is destined for a rivalry to end all rivalries if and when they play Boston in the opening round.

Pittsburgh Penguins (+450 to win Eastern Conference)

You can?t talk about the Eastern Conference without mentioning the Penguins. To forget them is to be mistaken. If you?re looking for the best bet overall, it?s right here. Great value. Great team. Know how to win. The Penguins essentially have it all.

They are by no means perfect, but no team in the Eastern Conference truly is. What they have is the deadliest scoring line in playoff hockey (for now), and two icons in Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby. Matt Murray, a playoff hero from just last year, has already backstopped this team to a terrific season.

Pittsburgh is not the team that they were last year or the year before, but ?getting it done? in the grinder of the NHL playoffs is an important element to creating a winning team. The ebbs and flows are violent enough, and Pittsburgh knows how to ride and counter them. Experience means so damn much at this point in the year which is what makes Pittsburgh such a viable investment.

Washington Capitals (+550 to win Eastern Conference)

I?d be remiss to write about the Eastern Conference without mentioning the Capitals, who are being overlooked for a lot of reasons, but they have a great potential opening round matchup with New Jersey. They?ll kill the Devils without blinking. Washington has been relatively even across the board in terms of play, and it certainly feels as if their window is closing. They?ve never really felt like a true Stanley Cup threat even at Ovechkin?s prime. Since rising to the top of the conference, they?ve also never escaped the second round. Hard to take them seriously to be honest.

Bruins beat Senators to preserve chances for East's top spot
April 7, 2018

BOSTON (AP) David Pastrnak and Tommy Wingels scored 51 seconds apart in the second period, and Boston beat the Ottawa Senators 5-2 on Saturday night, preserving the Bruins' chances for the No. 1 playoff seed in the Eastern Conference.

Danton Heinen also scored for Boston, which added late goals by Noel Acciari and David Backes in the final two minutes to put away the Senators and complete the season sweep.

Anton Khudobin stopped 26 shots for the Bruins, who host Florida on Sunday night in a game postponed by a winter storm Jan. 4. Boston trails Tampa Bay, which lost in overtime at Carolina, by one point for the top spot in the East and the Atlantic Division.

Ryan Dzingel scored both goals for Ottawa and Colin White had two assists. Daniel Taylor made 29 saves for the Senators, who finished 28-43-11 one year after reaching the Eastern Conference finals.

AVALANCHE 5, BLUES 2

DENVER (AP) - Nathan MacKinnon scored his first goal in 10 games, Jonathan Bernier stopped 32 shots and Colorado earned the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Defensemen Samuel Girard and Tyson Barrie scored, while captain Gabriel Landeskog and Matt Nieto added empty-netters for the Avalanche, who won the West's second wild card and head to the postseason for the first time since 2013-14. They will face top-seeded Nashville in the opening round a season after recording a league-low 48 points.

Game No. 82 for these two boiled down to a winner-take-all scenario, though the Avalanche had to win in regulation.

Jaden Schwartz had a power-play goal and Brayden Schenn scored with 38.4 seconds remaining for the Blues, who saw their playoff appearance streak halted at six straight seasons.

FLYERS 5, RANGERS 0

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Claude Giroux earned his first career hat trick in the regular season and Philadelphia clinched a playoff berth in its final regular-season game.

Giroux finished with 34 goals and 102 points. He extended his career highs in points and goals while becoming the sixth player in franchise history to reach 100 points in a season.

Michael Raffl and Ivan Provorov also scored for the Flyers, who are returning to the playoffs after missing out last year, and will be vying for their third Stanley Cup. The club won back-to-back titles in 1973-74 and 1974-75.

Brian Elliott made 17 saves in his second game in goal after returning from a 25-game absence because of core muscle surgery on Feb. 13.

Henrik Lundqvist finished with 35 saves for the Rangers (34-39-9), who ended their regular season with their ninth loss in the last 11. Hours later, New York fired coach Alain Vigneault.

HURRICANES 3, LIGHTNING 2, OT

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Elias Lindholm scored 49 seconds into overtime, and Carolina prevented Tampa Bay from clinching the top spot in the Eastern Conference.

Justin Williams had a goal and an assist, Jordan Staal scored a deflected goal and Phil Di Giuseppe had two assists for the Hurricanes. They had lost three straight and four of five down the stretch during their ninth straight season without making the playoffs - tied for the third-longest such drought in NHL history.

Ondrej Palat scored the tying goal with 8:49 left and Ryan Callahan also scored for Tampa Bay. But with star Steven Stamkos out for a third straight game with an upper-body injury, the Lightning earned one point for going to OT but relinquished control of the Atlantic Division race to Boston.

The Bruins, who beat Ottawa 5-2 on Saturday night, will win the division and claim the top spot in the East if they beat Florida on Sunday night.

MAPLE LEAFS 4, CANADIENS 2

TORONTO (AP) - Frederik Andersen made 31 saves to set a franchise mark with his 38th win of the season to led Toronto.

Auston Matthews scored his 34th goal to match his jersey number and added an assist as the Maple Leafs finished with a club-record 105 points.

Zach Hyman, Nazem Kadri and Patrick Marleau had the other goals for the Leafs, while Jake Gardiner had two assists.

The Leafs still have to wait one more day to find out their first-round playoff opponent. A win by the Bruins on Sunday against Florida would see Boston move into first in the Atlantic Division and set up a meeting between Tampa Bay and Toronto.

Anything else would set up a Leafs-Bruins matchup.

Daniel Carr and Jeff Petry scored for Montreal, and Carey Price stopped 26 shots.

DUCKS 3, COYOTES 0

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Rickard Rakell had a goal and assist, and Ryan Miller made 31 saves to lead Anaheim.

Rakell added an assist and scored for the 12th time in his last 19 games. He led the playoff-bound Ducks with a career-high 34 goals and 69 points this season.

Miller earned his fourth shutout of the season and 43rd of his career. It was also his 370th career win, moving him past Tom Barrasso for second place on the all-time list among U.S.-born goalies.

Adam Henrique scored his 24th of the season for Anaheim (44-25-13), and Hampus Lindholm added an empty-netter before the final buzzer.

Antti Raanta stopped 24 shots for the Coyotes (29-41-12), who finished last in the Pacific but went 17-9-3 in their last 29 games.

PANTHERS 4, SABRES 3

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - Hours after Florida was eliminated from playoff contention, Vincent Trocheck scored late in the third period to help the Panthers hold off Buffalo.

The Panthers' slim playoff hopes ended when Philadelphia beat the New York Rangers 5-0 earlier in the day. Florida took out its frustration on the Sabres, going ahead 3-0 in the first period en route to its franchise-record 27th home victory.

Jonathan Huberdeau scored a power-play goal for the Panthers. Colton Sceviour had a goal and an assist and Nick Bjugstad also scored.

James Reimer made 38 saves in place of Roberto Luongo, who had played three games in four nights, including his 1,000th game Thursday.

Ryan O'Reilly, Sam Reinhart and Jason Pominville scored for Buffalo. Chad Johnson allowed three goals on 12 shots in the first period and was replaced to start the second with Adam Wilcox. Wilcox finished with 14 stops in his NHL debut.

PREDATORS 4, BLUE JACKETS 2

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Filip Forsberg scored three goals, and Nashville Predators finished off the best regular season in franchise history.

The Predators accepted their first Presidents' Trophy before the game from NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly, and captain Roman Josi grabbed the trophy with his left hand before the rest of the team joined him on the ice for photos. Fans then chanted ''We want the Cup'' for the defending Western Conference champs who lost the Stanley Cup in six games to Pittsburgh last June.

Nashville followed up the trophy presentation by winning its franchise-record 53rd game this season to finish with 117 points.

Austin Watson also scored for Nashville and Pekka Rinne made 25 saves to go 42-13-4 this season.

Josh Anderson and Brandon Dubinsky scored for Columbus.

ISLANDERS 4, RED WINGS 3, OT

DETROIT (AP) - John Tavares scored 3:16 into overtime as New York rallied for a win in the season finale.

Tavares, set to be a free agent in the offseason, snapped a wrist shot past Red Wings goalie Jared Coreau on the stick side.

Ryan Pulock's power-play goal with 29.7 seconds left in regulation tied it after Detroit led 3-1. Anders Lee got his 40th goal and Andrew Ladd also scored for the Islanders (35-37-10), who are missing the playoffs for the second straight year and eighth in the last 11. Thomas Greiss stopped 36 shots.

Mathew Barzal had two assists for the Islanders to give him 63, tying Bryan Trottier's franchise record for a rookie set in 1975-76.

Henrik Zetterberg, Justin Abdelkader and Dylan Larkin scored for the Red Wings (30-39-13), who are also missing the postseason for a second straight season. Coreau finished with 35 saves.

JETS 4, BLACKHAWKS 1

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - Andrew Copp scored twice and Winnipeg's Connor Hellebuyck set an NHL record for most wins in a season by an American goalie.

Hellebuyck made 30 saves to pick up his 44th win, surpassing Tom Barrasso's 1992-93 run with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Dustin Byfuglien and Kyle Connor also scored for the Jets (52-20-1), who have won five straight and a franchise-record nine in a row at Bell MTS Place. The Jets, who relocated from Atlanta in 2011, also set franchise records for wins, points and home wins (21).

Winnipeg opens the NHL playoffs next week at home against the Minnesota Wild.

Brent Seabrook scored and Jeff Glass stopped 35 shots for the Blackhawks (33-39-10), who didn't make the playoffs for the first time since 2007-08.

CAPITALS 5, DEVILS 3

WASHINGTON (AP) - Alex Ovechkin scored twice to make it an NHL-leading 49 goals as Washington beat New Jersey.

Serenaded by chants of ''We want 50,'' Ovechkin wrapped up his seventh Maurice ''Rocket'' Richard Trophy as the league's top goal-scorer and came one short of his eighth 50-goal season. Ovechkin scored for the third consecutive game and is the oldest player to lead the NHL in goals since Phil Esposito in 1974-75.

By beating the Devils in regulation, the Metropolitan Division-champion Capitals ensured they wouldn't face them in the first round of the playoffs. Playing without MVP front-runner Taylor Hall, New Jersey fell to the second wild card in the Eastern Conference and will open on the road against the Atlantic Division winner - either Boston or Tampa Bay.

Nicklas Backstrom, Michal Kempny and Andre Burakovsky also scored, and Braden Holtby stopped 23 of the 26 shots.

Patrick Maroon had a goal and two assists, and rookie Nico Hischier and Miles Wood each scored for New Jersey. Cory Schneider allowed five goals on 25 shots.

Avalanche head back to playoffs after 5-2 win over Blues
April 7, 2018

DENVER (AP) Nathan MacKinnon scored his first goal in 10 games, Jonathan Bernier stopped 32 shots and the Colorado Avalanche earned the final playoff spot in the Western Conference with a 5-2 win over the St. Louis Blues on Saturday night.

Colorado improved to 28-11-2 on home ice this season in front of a raucous crowd, matching a franchise record for wins that was set in 2000-01, when the team hoisted the Stanley Cup.

Game No. 82 for these two boiled down to a winner-take-all scenario. Although, there was one caveat - the Avalanche couldn't allow the game to go to overtime since the Blues held the tiebreaker. St. Louis pulled out all the stops late in the third: Taking out goalie Jake Allen with around 4:35 remaining. Landeskog and Nieto sealed the win with empty-net tallies.

Colorado finished with 95 points to become first NHL team to post a 40-point gain over an 82-game season since the Pittsburgh Penguins jumped 47 from 2005-06 (58) to 2006-07 (105).

Jaden Schwartz had a power-play goal and Brayden Schenn scored with 38.4 seconds remaining for the Blues, who saw their playoff appearance streak halted at six straight seasons.

Leading 2-1 late in the third, MacKinnon beat Allen with a shot over the goaltender's shoulder. MacKinnon had been held without a goal since March 18 when he had two against Detroit. He finished with 97 points - the most by an Avalanche player since Joe Sakic had 100 in 2006-07.

Barrie gave Colorado a 2-0 lead in the second on a goal from the blue line that led to a challenge by St. Louis, which felt the puck left the zone. The officials took a long look before ruling it a good goal and determined ''there were no definitive replays which showed that the puck left the attacking zone,'' according to NHL situation room.

Soon after, Schwartz answered when he tipped in a shot on a power play.

The Blues arrived in town late following a 4-1 win in Chicago on Friday night. They sent Allen to the Mile High City early so he would be better rested for the big game. Allen made one diving save after another to keep things close.

Girard scored his first goal since Feb. 22 on a slap shot through traffic with 46 seconds left in the first period to give the Avs a 1-0 advantage.

St. Louis was dealt a blow midway through the first period when leading goal-scorer Vladimir Tarasenko left with an upper-body injury. He didn't return.

The game definitely had a Game 7 feel. It made sleeping the night before a bit restless, Barrie said.

The last time two teams met in their final game of the season while contending for the last available playoff spot in the conference was 2010. In that contest, Philadelphia beat the New York Rangers in a shootout.

NOTES: There was a moment of silence to honor the people who were killed in a bus crash involving a junior hockey team in western Canada. ... Blues D Alex Pietrangelo played in his 617th career NHL game. He surpassed Bob Plager for second on the team's all-time list for defensemen. ... RW Chris Thorburn suited up in his 800th career game. ... Colorado was without D Erik Johnson and G Semyon Varlamov, who are both sidelined by knee injuries.

UP NEXT

Blues: Offseason.

Avalanche: Face Nashville in the first round of the playoffs. The Avs were 0-3-1 against the Predators this season.

Quote of the Day
?The things I ended up being really good at were the things I found myself putting effort into. A lot of people talk about passion, but that?s really not what you need to focus on. You really need to evaluate and say, ?Okay, where am I putting in my time?. Because when you look at where you put in your time, where you put in your effort, that tends to be the things that you are good at. And if you put in enough time, you tend to get really good at it.?

Sunday?s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday

13) Mets 3, Nationals 2? Washington 3B Anthony Rendon got called out on strikes his first two times up in Saturday?s game, both on marginal pitches; after the second strikeout, Rendon flipped his bat but didn?t say a word? umpire Marty Foster tossed him anyway, at which point Washington manager Dave Martinez came out and got himself tossed, too.

Steven Matz threw 93 pitches in five innings for the Mets; 30 of them were called strikes by Foster and I?m telling you, it might be a very long time before another pitcher has 30 pitches called strikes in one game? I keep track of this stuff and I?ll let you know. It rarely happens.

But that is why the Nationals were steamed during this game.

12) Astros 1, Padres 0 (10)- Alex Bregman hit an infield pop-up just in front of the plate with two out in the 10th inning; Eric Hosmer overran the ball, it fell untouched and Houston got a win in a highly unlikely way, with the winning run scoring from second. We might not see another ball like that fall untouched the rest of the season.

11) AAF is a new spring football league that kicks off next February; Orlando is the first city to be named to the league, and Steve Spurrier is going to be their coach, which lends the league instant credibility.

Spurrier coached the Tampa Bay Bandits in the USFL back in the 80?s.

10) Mets 3, Nationals 2? Mets are off to a very strong 6-1 start. Last time the Mets started a season 6-1 was in 2006.

9) Didi Gregorius? stats, contrasted between Arizona and New York:
2 years in Arizona: .241 BA, .682 OPS, 13 HR?s in 703 PA.
3+ years in Bronx: .278 BA, .758 OPS, 57 HR in 1,780 PA.

8) Re-watched Jon Gruden?s half-hour QB Camp TV show with Jared Goff today, done before the Rams picked Goff two years ago; those shows are great TV, but now that Gruden is coaching the Raiders, they?re gone for now.

ESPN needs to find someone (Jaworski? Dilfer? Gannon?) to pick this show up and grill these young QB?s. Think it helps the players and it is fun/educational to watch on TV.

7) Angels? utility guy Nolan Fontana is the grandson of Lew Burdette, who was a really, really good pitcher for the Braves back in the 50?s/60?s- he was 203-144 in his career.

6) Nuggets 134, Clippers 115? LA is 42-38, but they?re eliminated from playoff contention.

5) There was only one birdie Saturday at the 11th hole at The Masters: Jeff Knox, the non-competing marker who played with Paul Casey.

4) Saturday?s 3rd round scoring average of 71.264 was the lowest 3rd round average at the Masters since 1986.

3) Lot of people got out of Puerto Rico after the hurricanes last summer; so many people left that they they?ve closed 283 schools on the island. Thats a lot of kids that are gone.

2) Top three guys in the lineup for the New Hampshire Fisher Cats of AA Eastern League are the sons of three former big leaguers? Cavan Biggio, Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

1) Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Humboldt Broncos, a junior hockey team in western Canada whose bus was in an accident Friday- 15 people passed away. Very sad thing.

Back in my college days, I was student manager of the basketball team; we spent lot of snowy nights in buses in places with hideous weather. My heart goes out to the friends and families.
