Resilient Lightning rebound to beat Bruins 4-2 in Game 2
April 30, 2018

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) The Tampa Bay Lightning have been just as resilient in the Stanley Cup playoffs as they've been all season.

Challenged by coach Jon Cooper to compete harder and raise their level of play after dropping the opener of their second-round series against the Boston Bruins, the top seed in the Eastern Conference responded with a 4-2 victory in Game 2 of the best-of-seven matchup Monday night.

Brayden Point had an empty-net goal and three assists. He also teamed with Tyler Johnson and Ondrej Palat to slow down Boston's high-scoring line of Patrice Bergeron, David Pastrnak and Brad Marchand.

Game 3 is Wednesday night in Boston.

''It feels good. I thought we played well,'' Point said after posting just the third four-point game in Tampa Bay's history. ''We had a tough night in Game 1. I thought we came back tonight knowing we'd end up better.''

Point assisted on Tampa Bay's first three goals before sealing the win with his empty-netter with 25.2 seconds left.

Yanni Gourde had a first-period goal and Johnson and Palat also scored for the Lightning, which rebounded from a 6-2 loss in Game 1.

''We needed to have a bounce back, we needed to have an answer, and I thought we did that,'' Johnson said. ''I thought we competed really hard, I thought we played well and we got rewarded with some chances and some opportunities.''

Bergeron, Pastrnak and Marchand combined for three goals and 11 points in the opener, with most of the damage coming while Point's line was trying to contain them. They had four more points in Game 2, but were unable to take over the game.

Cooper said he never considered changing the matchup against Boston's top line.

''I honestly didn't. ... We know they can do it. We have faith in them, and I thought they were outstanding tonight,'' Cooper said before turning his attention back to Point.

''The kid's a hockey player and he competes hard,'' Cooper said. ''Trust me, if there was any talk of pulling him off that line, I think those three guys would have marched right into my room and said, `What are you doing?'''

Charlie McAvoy scored for the Bruins late in the first period. Torey Krug's late goal trimmed Tampa Bay's lead to 3-2 with just over four minutes remaining.

Tampa Bay's Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 18 shots. Tuukka Rask finished with 27 saves for Boston.

''They lost 6-2 at home and didn't feel good about their game. So, you've got to expect they're going to come out and play hard,'' Boston coach Bruce Cassidy said. ''I expect it in Game 3 going forward. They'll play hard and so will we.''

The Lightning had nearly twice as many scoring opportunities as the Bruins in the series opener and controlled play early Monday night, getting off the first 10 shots of the game and taking a 1-0 lead on Gourde's power-play goal at 11:47 of the first period.

With the exception of failing to taking advantage of a long 5-on-3 power play, the Bruins made the most of limited chances, with the Bergeron line leading the way.

McAvoy's goal, with Bergeron and Marchand assisting, made it 1-1. Pastrnak and Marchand set up Krug's goal to keep the Bruins close.

The Bergeron line has 12 goals and 41 points in Boston's five playoff wins. The four assists Monday night are the only points the trio has delivered in four losses.

''I know they had a good game, but I think it's more on us,'' Pastrnak said of the play of Point's line. ''We've got to be better Wednesday.''

McAvoy said no one should be surprised the series is tied headed to Boston for the next two games.

''You want to sweep every series, obviously. But how attainable is that?'' the defenseman said.

''We're down to the last eight teams in the league. Every team here belongs here. These guys are a great team. We were battling with them all year for first place in the standings,'' McAvoy added. ''We know they're a good team, but we're a good team as well. So, this is going to be a tight series. I don't think anybody doubts that.''

NOTES: The Lightning have not fallen behind 2-0 in a playoff series since the 2014 Eastern Conference quarterfinals against Montreal. ... Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara appeared in his 111th playoff game, tying Rick Middleton for fourth place on Boston's career list. It was the 109th playoff game for Bergeron, tied with John Bucyk for the sixth-most in franchise history. ... With his 24th career playoff goal, Johnson pulled even with Vincent Lecavalier for third on Tampa Bay's all-time list.

Golden Knights beat Sharks 4-3 in OT
April 30, 2018

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) William Karlsson scored 8:17 into overtime and the Vegas Golden Knights bounced back from a blown lead late in the third period to beat the San Jose Sharks 4-3 on Monday night to take a 2-1 series lead.

After Tomas Hertl tied the game with 1:57 left in regulation, the expansion Golden Knights rebounded and won in overtime despite failing to convert on two early power-play chances.

Marc-Andre Fleury made 39 saves, including a brilliant one to rob Logan Couture early in the overtime. Couture had another chance in the sequence before the winning goal.

But the Knights broke out with the loose puck and Karlsson beat Martin Jones with a wrist shot high to the stick side and was mobbed by his teammates.

Jones made 29 saves.

The Sharks rallied to tie the game and force a second straight overtime with two goals in the third period. Evander Kane scored just seconds after the end of a power play midway through the third to set the stage for Hertl.

Hertl drove to the net with a strong power move. With the Sharks swarming in front of Fleury, Hertl whacked at a loose puck and knocked it in for the equalizer with 1:57 to go, sending the towel-waving crowd into a frenzy.

Colin Miller, Jonathan Marchessault and Reilly Smith scored in a span of less than five minutes in the second period to put the Golden Knights in control but they couldn't hold onto the lead.

Timo Meier opened the scoring with a power-play goal for the Sharks, but undisciplined play in the second period helped erase that lead and put San Jose in a hole.

Brenden Dillon held David Perron to give Vegas a power play less than a minute after Meier's one-timer off a perfect cross-ice pass from Chris Tierney gave the Sharks the lead.

San Jose had an 11-1 edge in shots on goal in the period at that point as the Sharks were controlling the play. But that quickly turned as James Neal held the puck below the goal line and fed Miller with a pass that Marc-Edouard Vlasic nearly broke up for a tap-in that tied the game.

About three minutes later, Hertl was called for roughing Neal well behind the play, giving the Golden Knights another chance with the man advantage.

They converted again when Marchessault one-timed a cross-ice pass from Alex Tuch past Jones to give Vegas the lead.

Smith then capped the three goals in 4:46 when Marchessault fed Karlsson, who was left alone at the side of the net. He deftly sent a blind, backhand pass through the crease to Smith, who tapped it in for the 3-1 lead that silenced the crowd until the third-period theatrics.

The Sharks came out energized by a raucous crowd and the presence of celebrity door opener and San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo in their first home game of the series.

San Jose got 16 shots on goal in the first period, but were unable to get anything past Fleury, who rebounded well from his first loss of the postseason.

The Golden Knights didn't manage as much pressure on Jones but did get the lone power play in the first period on a delay of game by Mikkel Boedker. San Jose killed the penalty to keep the game scoreless after one.

NOTES: Sharks F Joonas Donskoi (lower body) sat out. Chris Tierney took his place on the top line with Barclay Goodrow slotting in on the third line. ... F Tomas Tatar returned after missing the past four games as a healthy scratch. He took the place of Ryan Carpenter.

Home teams struggling in NHL playoffs
April 30, 2018

PITTSBURGH (AP) Having home ice is supposed to be an advantage in the NHL. So far in the 2018 playoffs, the only guarantee to playing at home is a monochrome backdrop provided by fans in team-specific T-shirts.

Consider the following:

- The Pittsburgh Penguins finished with the second-worst road record among the 16 playoff teams. Then the two-time defending Stanley Cup champions ripped off three wins in Philadelphia to kickstart their pursuit of a three-peat and backed it up with another victory in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series in Washington.

- The Capitals dropped Games 1 and 2 at home in overtime against Columbus in the opening round only to beat the Blue Jackets three times in Columbus on their way to advancing to the NHL's final eight for the fourth consecutive year.

- Winnipeg posted an NHL-high 32 wins on home ice. One of their seven regulation home losses, however, was a wild 6-5 setback at the hands of Nashville in February. The Predators' triumph helped them win the Presidents Trophy and guarantee home ice through the playoffs. The Jets, of course, won the series opener in Nashville to steal that advantage.

Home teams are just 25-25 so far in the playoffs heading into Tuesday, when Pittsburgh hosts Washington (7:30 p.m. Eastern, NBCSN) and Winnipeg welcomes the Predators (8 p.m., CNBC). Both series are tied after the visitors claimed their respective openers on the road.

Asked why the games have become a coin flip regardless of venue, Penguins coach Mike Sullivan - whose team was outplayed at PPG Paints Arena by Philadelphia in Game 2 and Game 5 in the opening round - admits he can't really come up with a reason.

''I don't know if I have answer for you that makes sense,'' Sullivan said Monday. ''Sometimes when teams go on the road, they have tendency to simplify their game ... I know our team historically has been very good at home and I believe we will continue to do that.''

If Pittsburgh wants to become the first franchise in 35 years to win three straight titles, it doesn't really have much of a choice. Though Sullivan is right in that the Penguins are pretty good at PPG Paints Arena, they've only been so-so when facing the Capitals. Washington won Game 3 and Game 6 in Pittsburgh during the 2017 postseason and wrapped up its third straight Metropolitan Division title with a 3-1 win there on April 1.

''You've got to create your own momentum, but it gives you good memories,'' Capitals coach Barry Trotz said. ''If you have to go back into the memory bank, at least we have one. Those are things that you can bank on maybe for some positive feeling going forward.''

Predators forward Nick Bonino couldn't offer up any specifics about Nashville's victory in Winnipeg even though it happened all of two months ago, saying only ''I'm sure we played a solid road game.''

The road does offer the visiting team a sense of routine. There aren't as many friends or family around. No kids waking up in the middle of the night. No traffic to deal with in most places. Just wake up, suit up and go play.

''You go out to dinner, there's not really any distractions,'' Bonino said. ''You're there for hockey.''

And the hockey in both series has been spectacular. Nashville avoided heading to Canada in an 0-2 hole with a thrilling double-overtime escape in Game 2. Washington responded after blowing a two-goal, third-period lead in Game 1 by winning a predictably chippy Game 2.

That chippiness included a questionable hit by Washington's Tom Wilson to Pittsburgh defenseman Brian Dumolin's head in the second period that sent Dumolin into the concussion protocol. Dumolin skated with his teammates on Monday and his status - much like the status of star center Evgeni Malkin (lower body) and Carl Hagelin (upper body) - won't be determined until Tuesday.

Wilson was not penalized for the hit and received a pass from the league when it opted not to schedule a disciplinary hearing to review the play. While Dumolin said he didn't see Wilson coming because he was bracing for a hit by Alex Ovechkin, Wilson claimed Dumolin turned his head just before impact leaving Wilson with no time to react.

''He stops and turns and I'm kind of right there as (Ovechkin) is coming in pretty aggressively,'' Wilson said. ''It's a collision.''

Pittsburgh star Kris Letang wasn't surprised Wilson's hit wasn't deemed illegal. Why?

''Because we don't know anymore (what's legal and illegal),'' he said.

And we don't know what a given night is going to bring anymore either. Home teams get to sleep in their beds. They get the luxury of the last line change before faceoffs, allowing them to get the matchups they want. And so far it has made zero difference in the result.

''It doesn't have to be pretty always on the road,'' Predators defenseman Matt Irwin said. ''I think we embrace that.''

Sunday?s quiz
Before this week, Mets had played 14 series at Petco Park in San Diego; they won one of the 14 series, in 2011.

******************************

Tuesday?s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but??.

13) Victor Oladipo?s 3-pointer at the end of Game 7 of Pacers-Cavaliers didn?t help Indiana win the series (they lost Game 7 by 4) but it helped Pacer backers win their bets. Most sports books opened Game 7 with the Cavaliers as 6.5-point favorites and closed at either 5 or 5.5.

?It was probably a swing of $3 million to $5 million in Nevada. These types of things happen five or more times a week in our industry, whether it?s a two-run home run to cover the run line in the bottom of the ninth or an empty-net goal in the last minute of an NHL game.?
Johnny Avello, head of race and sportsbook for the Wynn in Las Vegas

12) Review of 40 notable mock drafts by the Arizona Cardinals? PR guy shows average of 1st round ?hits? (right player/right team) was just 3/32; average of the previous five years was 4.2.

For second straight year, NFL Network?s Daniel Jeremiah led these mock drafters with 8 hits.

11) Tough times for the Dodgers: Dodgers? SS Corey Seager will have Tommy John surgery, is out for the season. Yasiel Puig is on the DL after getting hurt running into the wall in San Francisco Saturday. Rich Hill is on the DL with a cracked fingernail, which is a big deal if the nail is on your pitching hand.

10) Manny Machado is making $16M this season and the Orioles are terrible; he?ll be a free agent after this season. Would the Dodgers trade for Machado to fill Seager?s spot?

9) In 1983, Palace Station Casino in Las Vegas put up a 126-foot tall sign that contained 9,280 individual lamps; they started taking that sign down Monday, as part of a $192M project to modernize the Palace Station. Hopefully they keep the good Subway sub shop in their sportsbook.

8) Veteran NBA player Ener Kanter said at the start of his N.B.A. career in 2011, he swore at referees, but exclusively in Turkish, his native tongue. He went his entire first season without referees calling a technical on him- he?s had 15 technicals since- ?I should?ve stuck with Turkish,? was how Kanter described those.

At the start of this year?s NBA postseason, 62 foreign-born players from 33 countries were on playoff rosters.

7) Red Sox (Xander Bogaerts) hit their 6th grand slam of the season last night; 14 teams haven?t hit one yet this season.

6) Leading money winners on the PGA Tour this season:
1) Justin Thomas $5,221,300 2) Bubba Watson $3,690,454 3) Patrick Reed $3,580,252

5) Leading money winners on the Senior Golf Tour this year:
1) Steve Stricker $630,235 2) Jerry Kelly $539,890 3) Vijay Singh $500,380

4) High school basketball star Romeo Lankford will stay close to home and go to Indiana this fall; the hoopla surrounding his announcement was ludicrous, with roughly 4,000 people in his high school gym for the event.

Lankford is a 6-5 guard who was listed as the #6 HS prospect in this year?s class, but he was the best prospect who had to yet to commit. This is the first time since 2007 that the Hoosiers signed up the top-ranked senior from Indiana.

3) An authenticated signed Sandy Koufax jersey that he wore pitching for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1956 was sold for $414,279 at a recent auction.

2) Cubs 3, Rockies 2? Chicago won its last five games, allowing total of four runs.

1? Guy named Joe Ganim is the mayor of Bridgeport, CT; never heard of him until just now, but he wants to enter the Democratic primary to be governor of Connecticut. He?s been elected mayor of Bridgeport five times, with a little break in between.

The ?little break? in between was a 7-year federal prison sentence; from his Wikipedia page:

?On March 19, 2003, Ganim was convicted of 16 federal counts: one count each of racketeering, extortion, racketeering conspiracy and bribery; two counts of bribery conspiracy; eight counts of mail fraud and two counts of filing a false tax return.?

Would you vote for this guy to be governor of your state? Good grief.

Washington Capitals at Pittsburgh Penguins (-145, 5.5)

Series tied 1-1.

After ending the Pittsburgh Penguins' streak of road playoff victories at six, the Washington Capitals look to extend their good fortune away from home on Tuesday in Game 3 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series at PPG Paints Arena. ABOUT THE CAPITALS (54-27-8-1, 50-38 O/U): Evgeni Kuznetsov and T.J. Oshie are expected to play on Tuesday despite both sustaining minor hand injuries during the tail end of the third period in Game 2. "Everybody's fine. Same traveling party. Same lineup," said coach Barry Trotz, who noted that Andre Burakovsky could resume skating soon following a surgical procedure last week on the heels of an upper-body injury suffered against Columbus on April 15. As for Tom Wilson, the first-line forward did not receive a disciplinary hearing for his hit to the head of defenseman Brian Dumoulin, multiple media outlets reported on Monday.

ABOUT THE PENGUINS (52-32-4-2, 49-36 O/U): Evgeni Malkin (lower body) will be a game-time decision on Tuesday after missing three contests with a lower-body injury sustained in Game 5 of the first-round series versus Philadelphia. The former Hart Trophy recipient centered the second line between wings Dominik Simon and Bryan Rust during Monday's practice while fellow forward Phil Kessel shuffled to the third line alongside Derick Brassard and Conor Sheary. Carl Hagelin (upper body) and Dumoulin (upper body) also are questionable to play in Game 3, with the former changing his non-contact jersey to a traditional yellow one midway into Monday's practice while the latter wore a non-contact sweater throughout.

Ovechkin scores late to give Caps 4-3 win, 2-1 series lead
May 1, 2018

PITTSBURGH (AP) Alex Ovechkin knocked his own rebound out of midair and by Matt Murray with 1:07 remaining to lift the Washington Capitals to a 4-3 victory on Tuesday night in Game 3 of their increasingly testy Eastern Conference semifinal series with Pittsburgh.

Ovechkin gave the Capitals a 2-1 series lead when he collected a pass from Nicklas Backstrom and fired a shot that ripped by Murray before hitting the right post.

Ovechkin stayed with it and his baseball-like swat gave him eight goals in the playoffs and the Capitals their fourth consecutive road win in the postseason.

Ovechkin has also scored in four consecutive playoff games this postseason.

Matt Niskanen, John Carlson and Chandler Stephenson also scored for Washington. Braden Holtby finished with 19 saves. Backstrom had three assists.

Jake Guentzel had a goal and an assist for Pittsburgh. Sidney Crosby and Patric Hornqvist also scored, but the Penguins lost consecutive playoff games for only the fourth time since the start of their runs to consecutive Stanley Cups began in 2016.

Matt Murray made 18 stops but couldn't get his glove - a problem area all postseason - on Ovechkin's initial shot, allowing the Russian star to have a shot at the rebound.

JETS 7, PREDATORS 4

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - Blake Wheeler scored on the power play with 4:59 to play and Winnipeg roared back from an early 3-0 deficit to defeat Nashville and grab a 2-1 lead in the second-round playoff series.

After missing on a number of earlier chances, the Jets captain connected on a rebound off Mark Scheifele's shot from a tight angle for his second of the postseason.

Dustin Byfuglien had two goals and an assist for Winnipeg, while Paul Stastny added a goal and two assists.

Wheeler also had an assist and added the empty-netter with under a minute to play. Brandon Tanev also scored with Rinne on the bench in the game's final minute.

Jacob Trouba scored a goal and set up another for a two-point night. Connor Hellebuyck made 26 stops.

Filip Forsberg and P.K. Subban each had a goal and an assist for Nashville, while Mike Fisher and Austin Watson also scored.

Mattias Ekholm and Ryan Johansen both added two assists for the Predators, who got 38 stops from Pekka Rinne.

Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

Updated NFL over-under win totals for 2018:

? New England Patriots 11.5, over -$116

? Pittsburgh Steelers 10.5, under -$116

? Philadelphia Eagles 10, over -$125

? Minnesota Vikings 10, over -$125

? Green Bay Packers 10, under -$135

? New Orleans Saints 9.5, over -$135

**********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings??.

13) Kentucky Expo recently had an autograph session with members of the old Kentucky Colonels of the ABA, a team that got screwed over bigtime when the ABA folded in 1976.

The Colonels were awesome; their last five years in the ABA, they went 281-139, winning the ?75 (2nd-to-last) ABA title. Hubie Brown coached the Colonels their last two seasons; they had players like Dan Issel, Artis Gilmore, Louie Dampier, Maurice Lucas.

12) When the ABA folded, the Spurs, Nets, Pacers, Nuggets got absorbed into the NBA; the owners of the Spirits of St Louis were paid off to go away (an excellent story for another day), and that left the Colonels as the odd team out, since only four teams would go to the NBA.

11) John Y Brown owned the Colonels; he had gotten rich from buying KFC from the original Colonel Sanders. He turned a $2M investment into $284M in seven years.

The NBA paid Brown $3M to fold the Colonels and then bought half-interest in the NBA?s Buffalo Braves? he bought the other 50% the next year, then wound up trading the Braves franchise for the Boston Celtics- the guy that bought the Braves then moved them to San Diego, where they became the Clippers.

10) Think about how this all changed the course of history:
? Maurice Lucas went to Portland and the Blazers won the NBA title in his first year there.
? Buffalo Braves wound up losing their team.
? Spurs might?ve disappeared forever had the Colonels gone to the NBA.
? Brown somehow wound up being Governor of Kentucky.

9) When the 2017-18 NBA regular season ended earlier this month, there were 265 players with G League experience on NBA rosters. 17 of 30 first-round draft picks from the 2017 NBA draft spent some time in the G-League this season.

8) This past season in the G-League, players were either on an A contract that paid $28,000 or a B contract that paid $26,000. Next year, all G-League players will be paid $35,000.

7) NFL rushing yards per game leaders last year:
Ezekiel Elliott 98.3, Todd Gurley 87.0, Le?Veon Bell 86.1

6) When you think about Charlie Blackmon?s big numbers, most people would credit the thin air in Denver, but Blackmon has already hit nine homers on the road this season, one at home.

5) Giants put Johnny Cueto (elbow) on the DL.

4) A?s/Mariners will open the 2019 season in Japan, March 20-21; last time this happened was in 2012 and the A?s made the playoffs that year, so I won?t complain about it.

3) Since 2005, Cleveland Browns have drafted seven QB?s in rounds 1-3 of the draft; none of those seven guys is currently a starter in the league.

2) Braves 3, Mets 2? Third time Noah Syndergaard has allowed 10+ hits in a game; first two times were in 2015, when he was a rookie.

1) Siena finally decided on a basketball coach, after weeks of bungling their coaching search; they hire former Mount St Mary coach Jamion Christian, who was 101-95 in six years with the Mountaineers, 67-39 in NEC games.

It is getting way more difficult to be a mid-major or low major coach now, since players transfer at the drop of a hat? it is a form of free agency. If a program at a higher level doesn?t recruit well, they just poach a good player from a lower level, like they are a farm club.

Wednesday's NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs betting preview and odds

Round 2 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs continues Wednesday night with Game 3 between the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Boston Bruins and also Game 4 between the Vegas Golden Knights and the San Jose Sharks.

Tampa Bay Lightning at Boston Bruins (-145, 6)

Series tied 1-1.

The Tampa Bay Lightning made a strong response physically to even the Eastern Conference semifinal series and will try to match that effort when they visit the Boston Bruins on Wednesday night for Game 3. The Lightning totaled 42 hits and center Brayden Point rebounded from a rough series opener (minus-5 rating) to register a goal and three assists in the 4-2 victory Monday in Game 2.

The Lightning have a 67-44 edge in shots over the first two games and the Bruins hope to turn those numbers around at home, where they went 28-8-5 this season - including a pair of wins against Tampa Bay.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Network, CBC, TVA

SERIES PRICE (PER LV SUPERBOOK):

INJURY REPORT:

Lightning - LW Adam Erne (Questionable, Lower Body).

Bruins - D Brandon Carlo (Out For Season, Ankle), LW Anders Bjork (Out For Season, Shoulder).

ABOUT THE LIGHTNING (59-25-3-2, 53-33 O/U): Coach Jon Cooper said he never considered taking Point, Ondrej Palat and Tyler Johnson off the assignment of checking Boston?s top line after Game 1 and the trio responded by each scoring a goal Monday. Tampa Bay has yet to get a point from its top line of J.T. Miller, captain Steven Stamkos and Nikita Kucherov in the series, but the trio registered 12 shots on net combined and Miller had six hits Monday.

ABOUT THE BRUINS (55-24-9-3, 41-44 O/U): Boston?s top line of Brad Marchand, Patrice Bergeron and David Pastrnak had four assists Monday after posting three goals and 11 points in Game 1, but should get better matchups on home ice Wednesday. ?I know they had a good game, but I think it?s more on us,? Pastrnak told reporters. ?We?ve got to be better Wednesday.? Rookie defenseman Charlie McAvoy, who regularly pairs with captain Zdeno Chara, scored his first career playoff goal Monday and has four points to go along with a plus-5 rating in the first nine games of the postseason.

MATCHUP CHART:

TRENDS:

* Lightning are 17-4 in their last 21 Conference Semifinals games.

Vegas Golden Knights at San Jose Sharks (-130, 5.5)

Knights leads series 2-1.

The Vegas Golden Knights frittered away a two-goal lead for the second time in as many games and were staring at the possibility of trailing in a playoff series for the first time. William Karlsson would not let it happen, delivering the decisive tally in overtime to give Vegas a 2-1 lead in the Western Conference semifinal series entering Wednesday's Game 4 at the San Jose Sharks.

SERIES PRICE (PER LV SUPERBOOK):

LINE MOVES AND BETTING ACTION: The Sharks opened as -155 home favorites for Game 4 and steady, early action on the Golden Knights has pushed the moneyline down to -130 as of Tuesday night. 54 percent of wagers are on the underdog Knights. The total hit betting boards at 5.5 and has yet to move.

INJURY REPORT:

Golden Knights - D Clayton Stoner (Out Indefinitely, Abdominal).

Sharks - RW Joonas Donskoi (Questionable, Lower Body), C Joe Thornton (Questionable, Knee).

GOALIE SHOWDOWN:
W L OTL GAA Save % SO
Marc-Andre Fleury 29 13 4 2.24 .927 4
Martin Jones 30 22 6 2.55 .915 4

ABOUT THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS (57-24-5-3, 45-41 O/U): Marc-Andre Fleury rescued Vegas in overtime with a spectacular glove save, reaching out to snatch Logan Couture's point-blank blast from the slot to set the stage for Karlsson's heroics. Karlsson's winning goal capped another superb performance from the Golden Knights' top line as he combined with Jonathan Marchessault and Reilly Smith for seven points in the game and 19 so far through the first three games of the series. Karlsson, who has one goal and one assist in the first-round sweep of Los Angeles, has torched the Sharks for seven goals and five assists in seven meetings this season.

ABOUT THE SHARKS (50-28-8-3, 41-45 O/U): Is the time right for the return of veteran center Joe Thornton, who has been practicing with the team but has not played since Jan. 23 while recovering from surgery on his medial collateral ligament? Joonas Donskoi (lower body) is questionable for Wednesday after sitting out Game 3, which forced DeBoer to elevate Chris Tierney to the No. 1 line in place of Donskoi and insert Barclay Goodrow at center on the third line, with the latter move not proving to be fruitful. DeBoer has typically ruled Thornton out one day prior to each game but declined to do so Tuesday, listing the 38-year-old as day-to-day.

MATCHUP CHART:

Preview: Capitals (49-26) at Penguins (47-29)
Date: May 03, 2018 7:00 PM EDT

The Washington Capitals are trying to escape both their past and the second round of the playoffs, and a win Thursday in Game 4 of their second-round series against the Pittsburgh Penguins could go a long way toward that.

Washington holds a 2-1 series lead going into Game 4 Thursday at PPG Paints Arena after Alex Ovechkin scored in the final two minutes of Game 3 for a 4-3 Capitals win.

Pittsburgh, the two-time defending Stanley Cup champion, is 9-1 all-time in playoff series against Washington. The Penguins beat the Capitals in the postseason the past two seasons and in 2009 en route to Cup championships.

The Capitals prefer to look forward, however, starting with attempting to win three in a row and take what would be a fairly commanding two-game series lead.

"The biggest thing we've learned is to focus on the moment," Washington coach Barry Trotz said Wednesday. "That moment is going to be (Thursday) and nothing past that."

Both teams held optional practices at separate facilities Wednesday.

Washington will be without forward Tom Wilson, who was suspended three games by the NHL for a hit on Penguins forward Zach Aston-Reese that, according to Pittsburgh coach Mike Sullivan, left the rookie with a concussion and a broken jaw that will require surgery.

That was the second controversial hit delivered by Wilson, who knocked Brian Dumoulin out of Game 2 with a hit that put one of the team's best defenseman into the NHL's concussion protocol. Wilson was not penalized, nor did he have a hearing with the league's department of player safety for that hit.

Trotz, speaking before the Wilson decision was announced, said simply that his team would "see what the league says and then we'll react off of it. We're going to prepare like we always do."

Pittsburgh, even while trailing in the series after winning Game 1, is taking the same approach.

"I don't think anything (specifically in our game) concerns us," Penguins captain Sidney Crosby said. "There are always things that you have to clean up and get better (at) as the series goes on. So there are things we definitely want to improve on, but I think that's pretty typical for any series."

What's not typical is Pittsburgh goaltender Matt Murray showing any sign of uncertainty. However, he lamented giving up Ovechkin's game-winner and described his performance in Game 3 as "shaky."

"I felt really good the first two games. ... One save could've got the job done at the end (of Game 3). So still right there, still feel pretty good overall," Murray said.

The only personnel question lingering for Pittsburgh is winger Carl Hagelin, who is practicing with bulky full-face protection but hasn't played this series because of a mouth injury. He is listed as day to day.

Pittsburgh split the first two games in Washington, but the Capitals are hoping to go one better by sweeping Games 3 and 4 on the road.

"I mean, if you want to be successful in the playoffs you have got to win on the road, and especially because they won the first game," Washington winger Nicklas Backstrom told the Washington Post. "It's nicer to be up 2-1 than being down 2-1. We're just excited for the next game."

And a chance to help leave history in the past.

"I really believe this team has felt a little bit different, even in-season. When we'd get down a couple goals, we could fight back. It seems that we're never out of it," Capitals winger Jay Beagle said. "We have a great group of guys here. We've just got to obviously continue to play a hard road game (Thursday) and know that Pittsburgh's going to play their best and make sure that we come out and match it."

Preview: Predators (53-18) at Jets (52-20)
Date: May 03, 2018 9:30 PM EDT

WINNIPEG, Manitoba -- With a three-goal first period lead, there's no doubt many members of the Nashville Predators were convinced it was just a matter of 40 minutes until they reclaimed home-ice advantage in their second-round playoff series against the Winnipeg Jets.

But then the unfathomable happened. And now, instead of preparing for Game 4 on Thursday with a 2-1 series lead, the Predators trail by that same margin and are in danger of facing elimination when they return home for Game 5 on Saturday.

After absolutely dominating the Jets in every facet of the game for the first 20 minutes, the Predators poked the bear with the pointiest of sticks and turned a three-goal cushion into a three-goal deficit.

Center Austin Watson caught Jets captain Blake Wheeler with a hit to the head early in the second period, knocking his helmet off, causing normally mild-mannered Mark Scheifele to wrestle him to the ground, negating what would have been a Winnipeg power play.

From that point on, the Jets were a different team, finishing hits, outskating and outshooting the Predators and recapturing the most elusive of intangibles -- momentum.

Winnipeg center Paul Stastny got things going less than three minutes into the second period when defenseman Jacob Trouba's shot from the point hit his skate and deflected past Pekka Rinne and the comeback was on. Within three more minutes, both Dustin Byfuglien and Trouba had bulged the twine behind arguably the NHL's best goalie this season and Bell MTS Place, which just a few minutes earlier had resembled a morgue, had been transformed into a madhouse.

When Byfuglien put the Jets ahead 4-3 with just 45 seconds remaining in the period, it was so loud that fans couldn't hear their own voices inside their own heads. Even though Nashville tied things at 4-4 in the third, the Jets had the ice tilted in their favor and Wheeler scored two goals in the third, including the game-winner.

"I was mad at (Scheifele) at first because I thought we had a power play," Wheeler told a media scrum. "It's one of those things that you hate to see (Scheifele) go to the box with anyone. I'd rather have him on the ice. I'm okay, I can take that (hit). But I would do the same for him. That's what teammates do for each other."

Byfuglien, in addition to his usual physical dominance, has also been making an impact on the scoresheet with 10 points to lead all defensemen. In fact, he has as many goals -- three -- as the entire Predators' defense this postseason. Nashville led the NHL in goals (56) and points (206) from their rear-guards during the regular season.

Predators defenseman Mattias Ekholm acknowledged that Byfuglien, who weighs 265 pounds, has been a dominant force.

"In today's game, it's all about speed and it's all about moving your feet," he told The Tennessean. "He can still do that being a large human being, so it's impressive, for sure."

Jets forward Mathieu Perreault, who has been out since the first round of the playoffs but has been skating in a full-contact jersey for a couple of days, has been cleared to play and is a possibility for Thursday.

Caps, Pens try to keep focus on series
May 2, 2018

PITTSBURGH (AP) Tom Wilson's aggression helped propel him from fourth-line grinder into a difference-maker who skates alongside Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom.

His teammates feed off the edginess of his play. His coach loves his tenacity.

''There are very few Tom Wilsons in the league,'' Barry Trotz said.

And in Game 4 of Washington's increasingly prickly Eastern Conference semifinal against Pittsburgh, there won't be any at all.

The league suspended Wilson three games for his run-in with Penguins forward Zach Aston-Reese that left the rookie with a concussion and a broken jaw.

Aston-Reese was skating in front of the Washington bench when Wilson's left shoulder hit some combination of Aston Reese's shoulder and jaw in the middle of the second period.

Following a brief conference among the on-ice officials, Wilson was not penalized on the play and the Capitals used it as a rallying point on their way to a dramatic 4-3 victory that gave them a 2-1 series lead.

The league, however, suspended Wilson following a hearing on Wednesday, ruling the hit was illegal. The league considered Aston-Reese's head the initial point of contact and called the incident avoidable.

The decision means the Capitals are now forced to push the two-time defending Stanley Cup champions to the brink of elimination without one of their most physical players.

Trotz defended Wilson, who has now been disciplined by the department of player safety three times this season.

''It was a collision,'' Trotz said Wednesday before the suspension was announced. ''They hit and to me it looked like body on body. We've stopped it, we've looked at it, there's pictures all over the Internet that you can see. He doesn't leave his feet. It's body-on-body. ... I'm surprised the player has the injury that he has.''

The incident overshadowed the kind of taut and electric play that's come to symbolize one of the NHL's top rivalries.

Sidney Crosby gave the Penguins the lead with a goal late in the second period only to have Washington - in a historically un-Washingtonlike move whenever the Capitals face Pittsburgh - beat Matt Murray twice in the third to win, the last coming on Ovechkin bunting in a rebound of his own shot with just 1:07 to play.

''I really believe this year has felt a little bit different,'' Washington forward Jay Beagle said. ''Even in season when we would get down a couple goals we could fight back. It seems like we're never out of it.''

Then again, it's been 36 months since the Penguins have exited the postseason without the Cup on the team plane.

Pittsburgh has ripped off nine consecutive series victories during its run at the top, and has only trailed after three games once, in last year's Eastern Conference final against Ottawa.

The Penguins rebounded to win in seven games and there's hardly any panic. It's not what Pittsburgh does.

The other thing the Penguins try not to do? Get so caught up in trying to retaliate against Wilson that they forget why they're out there in the first place.

Defenseman Kris Letang pointed to his team's antagonist - and entirely legal - response to Wilson in Game 3 as proof.

Jake Guentzel delivered a shot into the end boards. Defenseman Jamie Oleksiak basically begged Wilson to fight, but didn't take it too far when Wilson failed to engage.

''After the whistle we walked away,'' Letang said. ''There's not much business to do. I liked our answer.''

The Penguins will need another one if they want to keep their hopes of becoming the first team in 35 years to three-peat alive. They've only dropped consecutive games in the playoffs five times in two-plus years and have lost to Washington only once in 10 all-time postseason meetings.

The Capitals have momentum on their side. Pittsburgh has history.

''It's hard to win in the playoffs and you're going to go through ups and downs and emotional highs and emotional lows,'' Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said. ''And it's all about how you handle those and respond. ... Right now our eyes are on Game 4.''

UNDISCIPLINED OR PLAIN SLOPPY?

The Nashville Predators won the Presidents' Trophy despite leading the NHL in penalty minutes. They had played with much more discipline until melting down with three consecutive penalties helping turn a 3-0 lead after the first period into a 7-4 loss and a 2-1 deficit to the Winnipeg Jets.

Now Nashville faces a challenge on Thursday night (9:30 p.m. ET NBCSN) in their Western Conference semifinal to avoid being pushed to the brink of elimination in the best-of-seven series.

''We have a smart group,'' Predators center Ryan Johansen said Wednesday. ''We understand what we did wrong and what needs to be done.''

Not only did the Predators not help themselves with five penalties - three in the third after tying the Jets at 4-4 - they didn't play well after grabbing a big lead.

''We just sat back too much,'' Predators forward Filip Forsberg said. ''Obviously they scored a goal early and after that we just became passive and, yeah, I don't think it would have mattered which team we were playing. If we play like that, we're going to get scored on.''

---

WHERE'S PHIL?

Penguins forward Phil Kessel set a career high with 92 points during the regular season, but has just one secondary assist through three games of the series and - perhaps more troubling for a player with 330 goals - only four shots on net.

Sullivan and the coaching staff met with Kessel before Game 3 in an attempt to provide insight into what Kessel could do to get it going. The main thing? Just becoming more active. Sullivan wants Kessel to get closer to traffic in front of the net instead of loitering at the half boards looking for an opening.

Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Updated NFL over-under win totals for 2018:

? San Francisco 49ers 8.5, under -$125

? Baltimore Ravens, 8.5, under -$130

? Tennessee Titans 8.5, under -$140

? Carolina Panthers 8, over -$140

? Dallas Cowboys 8, over -$135

? Jacksonville Jaguars 8, -$125

**********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud??.

13) Sunday afternoon at Westwood Country Club in the St Louis area; 7th hole, 123 yards; two guys in the same foursome both got hole-in-1?s.

The odds of two guys in the same foursome getting an ace on the same hole are said to be 17,000,000-1. Pretty cool, but which guy had honors on the next hole?

12) Interesting article on Yahoo Sports about the Miami Dolphins? scouts and how they went about their duties leading up to last week?s draft.

Over the course of last football season and leading up to the draft, Miami?s 10-man scouting staff graded 1,504 players, wrote 3,690 reports and visited 256 colleges.

11) ESPN said that Kyle Korver had the ball in his hands for 30 seconds during Cleveland?s OT win in Toronto Tuesday night. He made the most of those 30 seconds, making 7 of 17 shots, 5 of 12 behind the arc. 17 shots in 30 seconds with the ball; sounds like a good job.

10) Colorado Rockies led off Tuesday?s game at Wrigley Field with back/back homers; that was first time since 1937 a visiting team starting a game at Wrigley with back/back jacks.

9) Dodgers were 23-4 last year when Clayton Kershaw started; they?re 2-5 this year.

8) Red Sox 5, Royals 4? Mookie Betts had three homers for Boston, which trailed 3-0 early.

7) According to ESPN, Phoenix Suns will hire Utah Jazz assistant coach Igor Kokoskov as their new head coach; he will become the first European-born head coach in the NBA..

6) Utah State?s football team will be paid $1.91M to come to Tuscaloosa and lose to the Crimson Tide during the 2022 season.

Thats the 3rd-most $$$ a team has ever gotten for a non-conference game; Florida is paying Colorado State $2M (as part of Jim McElwain?s buyout) for a game this fall and Auburn will pay Tulane $1.937M for a 2019 game

5) In case you were wondering, Albert Pujols holds the all-time major league record for first inning home runs? he hit his 142nd 1st inning homer off Dylan Bundy Wednesday night.

4) Baseball players get hurt a lot:
? Jacob deGrom hyperextended his elbow while batting Wednesday night; an MRI was taken; all Mets fans and deGrom fantasy owners are holding their breath.
? Braves? SS Dansby Swanson left that same game with a sore left wrist.
? Dodgers? P Hyun-jin Ryu left his start in the 2nd inning with an unknown injury.

3) Jazz 116, Rockets 108? Utah evens series 1-1 with a road win; they made 15-32 on arc, led by Joe Ingles? 7-9. Winning a road game without Ricky Rubio is even more impressive.

2) A?s 3, Mariners 2? Paxton blanked Oakland for seven innings, striking out 16 hitters in an overpowering performance, but they took him out after 105 pitches and the A?s beat the Seattle bullpen.

1? Random question: What would baseball be like if there was no pitchers? mound, just a circle in the middle of the infield where the pitchers threw the ball? Would scoring go way up?

Thursday's NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs betting preview and odds

Round 2 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs continues Thursday night a pair of Game 4s when the Pittsburgh Penguins host the Washington Capitals and the Winnipeg Jets, and their crazy fans, welcome the Nashville Predators.

Washington Capitals at Pittsburgh Penguins (-160, 6)

Captials lead series 2-1.

The Washington Capitals bid to keep their perfect postseason road record intact and push the two-time reigning Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins to the brink of elimination on Thursday when they play Game 4 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series. The Capitals will look to accomplish the feat without Tom Wilson, however, as the first-line forward was suspended three games by the NHL on Wednesday.

Wilson escaped punishment from the league after his hit to the head of Pittsburgh defenseman Brian Dumoulin (concussion) in Game 2, but wasn't as fortunate after his illegal check broke the jaw of Zach Aston-Reese midway into the second period of Tuesday's 4-3 win in Game 3. "We'll prepare like we always do. The focus is on the next game, and any adjustments or any changes we make, we'll react however we need to," Washington coach Barry Trotz said Wednesday before the suspension was announced. Pittsburgh's Jake Guentzel extended his point streak to seven games (seven goals, eight assists) by scoring and setting up a goal on Tuesday while superstar captain Sidney Crosby also had a goal and an assist for his sixth multi-point performance of the postseason. "I don't think anything (specifically in our game) concerns us," Crosby said. "There are always things that you have to clean up and get better (at) as the series goes on. So there are things we definitely want to improve on, but I think that's pretty typical for any series."

ABOUT THE CAPITALS (55-27-8-1, 51-38 O/U): Captain Alex Ovechkin scored his eighth goal of the postseason and fifth in four contests by swatting his own rebound out of the air and past Matt Murray to snap a tie with 1:07 remaining on Tuesday. The three-time Hart Trophy recipient's tally capped the second career three-assist postseason performance for Nicklas Backstrom and effectively sent Washington to its fourth straight road win in the playoffs and ninth consecutive dating to the regular season. "I mean, if you want to be successful in the playoffs you have got to win on the road, and especially because they won the first game," the 30-year-old Swede told the Washington Post. "It's nicer to be up 2-1 than being down 2-1. We're just excited for the next game."

ABOUT THE PENGUINS (52-33-4-2, 50-36 O/U): Coach Mike Sullivan placed the game-time decision tag on Carl Hagelin, who has been sidelined since Game 6 of the first-round series versus Philadelphia after he sustained an upper-body injury at the hands of Flyers captain Claude Giroux. "I'm definitely feeling better, so that's a good sign. Any time you're out there with the guys, it gives you energy and confidence," Hagelin said after Wednesday's optional skate. Fellow forward Evgeni Malkin returned from his three-game absence due to a lower-body injury to set up Patric Hornqvist for a power-play goal as part of Pittsburgh's three-goal second period.

Nashville Predators at Winnipeg Jets (-140, 6)

Jets lead series 2-1.

The Winnipeg Jets did not panic when they fell behind by three goals at home, and the resulting offensive breakthrough has put them in position to take control of the Western Conference semifinals entering Thursday?s Game 4 at home against the Nashville Predators. The Jets scored three times in a 2:51 span of the second period en route to a 7-4 victory in Game 3, riding two goals each from Dustin Byfuglien and Blake Wheeler to take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series.

?Nobody panicked,? Jets defenseman Jacob Trouba told reporters in referencing a 3-0 Nashville lead after the first period, adding that Winnipeg coach Paul Maurice simply told his players during intermission to, ?just go play hockey.? Winnipeg is one goal in double-overtime away from holding a 3-0 series lead while the more experienced Predators have not only lost home ice advantage for now, but also lost their composure by taking three minors in the final nine minutes Tuesday. ?We stopped playing, clear as day,? Nashville defenseman Ryan Ellis told the media afterward. ?You could see that, and you can?t win hockey games when you stop playing midway through the second.? Goals from Mike Fisher, P.K. Subban and Austin Watson staked the Predators to the early advantage, but Nashville only put 18 shots on goal in the final two periods and were outshot 45-30 on the night.
