Capitals have home-ice disadvantage for Game 4 vs. Lightning
May 16, 2018

WASHINGTON (AP) The good news for Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals is they still lead their Eastern Conference final against the Tampa Bay Lightning. The bad news for the Capitals, counterintuitive as it may be: They host Game 4.

So far, Washington is 7-1 in away games this postseason, closing out each of its first two series on the road.

Heading into Thursday night, the Capitals are only 3-4 in their arena. The latest setback was a 4-2 loss to the Lightning on Tuesday, after victories at Tampa Bay by a combined score of 10-4 in the final's opening two games.

Ovechkin simply shrugged when asked about that discrepancy.

''We don't think about it,'' the three-time NHL MVP said. ''We just play our game.''

Others were less dismissive.

''We can take a few things that we've done on the road and put it into our home game,'' goalie Braden Holtby said. ''Just a little simpler. Simpler play. Just a kind of, like, more gritty style.''

Asked what his club could do to fare better at home, Capitals coach Barry Trotz said: ''Just play the way we do on the road. We're invested there. We're playing with real good focus. I didn't think we were as focused as we have been normally on the road. So just pretend you're on the road. All the buildings are pretty well the same these days.''

Trotz notices a difference in his players' attitude on home ice, saying: ''It's `us against the world' when were on the road.''

There is a league-wide trend here: Road teams are 38-34 in these playoffs.

So much for any supposed home-ice advantage, right?

''For whatever reason, at this time of the year there are more distractions than in the regular season, for sure. A lot of people have friends and family coming down and ticket requests. Sometimes there's that little added pressure of playing at home and wanting to obviously do good things in front of your fans,'' Lightning forward Steven Stamkos said. ''There's something to be said, too, (for) winning games on the road, when you can just kind of hear a pin drop in the crowd, sometimes, which is always a good thing.''

Holtby agreed.

''It's easier to play on the road. It's always that way on the road. Any team would say that,'' he said. ''Because you're not focused on the excitement of your fans and all that. They bring you energy in good ways, but at the same time, you need to stay realistic and play your game.''

During the regular season, Washington was a strong home team, playing in front of loud, red-wearing sellout crowds in every game.

Only five teams in the 31-club NHL had more victories at home than Washington's 28 - and that total represents seven more wins than the Capitals managed on the road.

So what is going on in the playoffs?

''I don't really have an explanation for it, to be honest with you,'' defenseman Brooks Orpik said. ''I know when we go on the road, I think maybe we feel a bit more relaxed, and when we do make mistakes, maybe we don't let the groaning affect us or whatnot. I mean, that being said, I think we should be probably mentally stronger to not let that affect us. Just got to try to find a way to win the next one at home, for sure.''

NOTES: Injured Capitals C Nicklas Backstrom, who has missed the last four games with an injured right hand, took part in the team's optional skate Wednesday. But Trotz wouldn't give any hint as to when Backstrom might return. ''When Nicky's ready to go, he's ready to go,'' Trotz said. ''You miss him in every way shape or form.'' ... Washington re-signed D Aaron Ness to a one-year, two-way contract worth $650,000 if he's in the NHL, $425,000 in the minors. Ness had one assist in eight games for the Capitals this season.

Lightning top Caps to even East finals
May 17, 2018

WASHINGTON (AP) Jon Cooper's Tampa Bay Lightning won Game 4 of the Eastern Conference final despite going the equivalent of more than a period without a shot on goal.

They won despite falling behind about 4 1/2 minutes into the game.

They won despite being called for three penalties - one right after the other - late in the first period, allowing Alex Ovechkin and the rest of the Washington Capitals' prolific power play to get all that time to operate.

And they did it, mainly, thanks to Andrei Vasilevskiy, who made 36 saves and kept things close until Alex Killorn scored the tiebreaker with about 8 minutes left, lifting Tampa Bay to a 4-2 victory over Washington on Thursday night, evening the series at two games apiece.

''When you don't have your `A' game, you need your goalie to have his `A' game,'' Cooper said. ''And he sure did.''

Now the Lightning will host Game 5 on Saturday night, with Game 6 back in Washington on Monday.

The road team has won every game in the series so far.

''It's pretty bizarre,'' said Steven Stamkos, who took a puck of the face during the morning skate, then went out and scored a power-play goal that gave Tampa Bay a 2-1 lead after the first period. ''We've got to find a way to win one at home.''

The Capitals might be thinking the very same thing. After all, they fell to 3-5 in the nation's capital this postseason, while they are 7-1 in away games.

On Thursday, they even got booed - yes, a smattering of jeers rang out in the team's first conference final in 20 years - late in the first period after failing to convert any of the trio of man-advantage chances.

That stretch was part of a chunk of nearly 21 full minutes of game time - the last 10:41 of the first period, followed by the initial 10:11 of the second - during which Tampa Bay never putt a single official shot on net.

''Our guys were gassed. That's a lot of stress. Mental stress. The same guys are on the ice the whole time. Other guys aren't playing,'' Cooper said. ''You kind of lose your whole rhythm.''

And so it was vital that Vasilevskiy played just like the Vezina Trophy finalist he is.

He was spectacular at times, including stops against Chandler Stephenson on a breakaway and Nicklas Backstrom - who returned after missing four games with an injured right hand - from the doorstep in the second period. In the third, Vasilevskiy used his left glove to swat away a try from Brett Connolly.

Following one flubbed chance, Ovechkin threw his head back and looked up, the very picture of disappointment.

After allowing 10 goals in Games 1 and 2, Vasilevskiy has given up a total of four in Games 3 and 4.

''He didn't play great in the first two. He played well in the second two. It's our job to make him look like the goalie from the first two games,'' Washington forward Tom Wilson said. ''We'll make it hard on him.''

Capitals goalie Braden Holtby didn't get a chance to make nearly as many saves, given the shot discrepancy: Washington ended up with 38 to Tampa Bay's 20. And Holtby allowed goals on two of the first five shots he faced, to Brayden Point and to Stamkos. Anthony Cirelli added an empty-netter with a second left.

The go-ahead goal came thanks to a defensive breakdown, when Killorn was left pretty much alone and scored 6 seconds after a Tampa Bay power play expired, putting in a pass from Ondrej Palat.

''Tonight was so important,'' Killorn said. ''Going down 3-1 in a series is tremendously different from 2-2.''

After his score, Killorn said, ''We played our best hockey.''

That's true.

Washington's goals had come from Evgeny Kuznetsov - off an assist by Ovechkin - in the second period, and defenseman Dmitry Orlov in the early going. But late, the Capitals could not get the tying goal in, even after pulling Holtby with a little more than 2 minutes to go so they could play 6-on-5.

''Of course,'' Ovechkin said, ''it's a missed opportunity.''

NOTES: Stamkos has one power-play goal in each game of the series. ... The Lightning have produced 11 power-play goals over their last nine games, with at least one in each. ... Lars Eller was whistled for both of Washington's penalties and has five in the past two games. ''That was way too many,'' Capitals coach Barry Trotz said. ... Kuznetsov's 21 points equaled Ovechkin (2009) for the most by a Capitals player in one postseason.

Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

Odds to win the Super Bowl this coming season:

6-1 New England Patriots

8-1 Pittsburgh Steelers, Philadelphia Eagles

10-1 Los Angeles Rams

12-1 Minnesota Vikings

14-1 Green Bay Packers, Los Angeles Chargers

18-1 Jacksonville Jaguars, New Orleans Saints

**********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here??.

13) I?d like to thank Ken Thomsen of SportsXRadio and Andy Iskoe for having me on as a guest last night on their excellent radio program.

You know what? If you go to SportsXradio.com, you can listen to an archived recording of the show. Even better? I?ll be on the show again tonight; sports talk radio at its finest!!!

12) Vegas Golden Knights are a great story, an expansion team that is six wins away from winning the Stanley Cup, but what about these Winnipeg Jets?

Before this season, the Atlanta Thrashers/Jets franchise had a combined record of 0-8 in Stanley Cup playoff games over their first 17 years. They?re a pretty good story, too.

11) We?re going to learn a lot more about Baker Mayfield this summer; HBO?s Hard Knocks will be covering the Cleveland Browns this summer.

10) NBA prospect Luka Doncic told reporters he?s still undecided about whether he?ll stay in the EuroLeague or join the NBA team that drafts him in June. He still has two games left in his season, so maybe he is just putting an announcement off until this season is finished.

9) First five picks in the 2008 NBA Draft:
1? Bulls-Derrick Rose
2? Heat-Michael Beasley
3? Wolves-OJ Mayo (traded to Memphis)
4? Sonics (Thunder)-Russell Westbrook
5? Grizzlies-Kevin Love (traded to Minnesota)
35? Clippers-Deandre Jordan

8) From 2007-17, Robinson Cano played 1,744 games at second base, the most-ever games by a second baseman over an 11-year span. Nellie Fox held the old record, playing 1,701 games from 1952-62.

7) If/when the Orioles trade Manny Machado, that will be the most pivotal transaction of the summer; Baltimore is 13-29, going nowhere, can they upgrade their future by getting some prospects for Machado, who is a free agent after this season?

6) Seattle Seahawks spent only $6.2M on their offensive line LY, least in the NFL.

5) Steven Souza Jr was miked during Sunday night?s game; we could listen to him as he played in right field. Think this is a wave of the future, trying to make the game more viewer-friendly.

4) How weird is it that part of this Michael Cohen/FBI investigation includes Ice Cube?s Big 3 half-court basketball league, and foreign investors in that league?

3) Who would?ve thought that on the morning of May 17, more than 25% of the way thru the baseball season, that the Dodgers/Marlins would have the same record? 16-26 ain?t good, but at least Miami was expected to be bad.

Dodgers beat Miami Thursday, are now 17-26, but they?re struggling badly.

2) I?m walking thru the Westgate Casino Wednesday night, going to get dinner and I walk right by Mark Davis, owner of the Oakland Raiders, who will be the Las Vegas Raiders in 2020 or 2021. This does not seem like the kind of hotel an NFL owner would be staying in.

Saw him again Thursday afternoon; there are people who live in the Westgate, maybe he is one of those people.

1) Best $8 I spent so far this week was for the WiFi on my flight west, which made the flight seem a lot shorter.

NHL Western Conference final Game 4 betting preview and odds: Jets at Golden Knights

Winnipeg Jets at Vegas Golden Knights (-125, 5.5)

Golden Knights lead series 2-1.

The Vegas Golden Knights might be an expansion team, but the play of veteran goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury in back-to-back victories has lifted them to a 2-1 lead over the Winnipeg Jets entering Friday?s Game 4 of the Western Conference finals at home. Fleury made 33 saves in a 4-2 victory in Game 3, surviving relentless pressure from the Jets in pushing the first-year club to within two victories of the Stanley Cup finals - a place Fleury reached with Pittsburgh the past two seasons.

Fleury, who leads all remaining goaltenders in postseason save percentage (.945) and goals against average (1.70), admits nobody thought Vegas would play this deep into May, telling reporters after Game 3: ?It?s been a long season. It?s been a lot of fun to be a part of. Really proud of this team and the way these guys have been working.? Once again it was forward Jonathan Marchessault who sparked the Golden Knights offense, scoring a pair of goals for the second consecutive game and recording his third-straight two-point night in the series. Meanwhile, the Jets looked sloppy and slow in the initial minutes of Game 3 and allowed a goal on a defensive miscue by goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, but pounded 16 shots at Fleury in the final 20 minutes and came close to tying the score several times. ?They?re playing really well because they?re a really good team,? Jets captain Blake Wheeler told reporters after recording two assists in Game 3. ?You put yourself in a tough position when you?re down by a couple goals on the road, tough environment against a good team. So, the onus is on us to get off to a better start.?

ABOUT THE JETS (61-25-9-2, 47-47 O/U): Winnipeg did get the dynamic duo from its top line rolling again, as Mark Scheifele scored twice to give him a league-high 14 goals for the playoffs and Wheeler boosted his NHL-best assist total to 17. But second-line forward Nikolaj Ehlers was scratched with an undisclosed injury and the Jets looked out of sorts, as Hellebuyck got caught behind his net while allowing a goal 12 seconds after Scheifele tied the game in the second period. Hellebuyck finished with 26 saves as Winnipeg lost back-to-back games for the first time since mid-March and now trails a postseason series for the first time this spring.

ABOUT THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS (61-26-5-3, 47-44 O/U): Marchessault now has 17 points (eight goals) in the playoffs, and along with linemates William Karlsson and Reilly Smith continue to give the Jets defense all kinds of trouble. Playoff veteran James Neal finished with a goal and an assist in Game 3, ending the night plus-3 and leading the Golden Knights with five shots on goal. Fleury made a handful of highlight-worthy saves with Vegas nursing a one-goal lead in the final period, and got plenty of help as the Golden Knights finished with 18 blocked shots and 18 takeaways.

Preview: Jets (52-20) at Golden Knights (51-24)
Date: May 18, 2018 8:00 PM EDT

WINNIPEG, Manitoba -- If you'd like to make the Vegas Golden Knights-Winnipeg Jets Western Conference final a little more interesting, go all-in on the expansion franchise.

Since 1973, the team that has captured a 2-1 lead in the semifinal has gone on to take the series 87.5 percent of the time, winning 35 of 43 encounters. After Wednesday night's 4-2 victory, that puts the Golden Knights in the cat bird's seat.

And the team that takes a 3-1 lead has gone on to win more than 90 percent of the time.

So, yeah, you could say Game 4 on Friday night at T-Mobile Arena is pretty much must-win territory for the visitors.

If the Jets are to have any chance of pulling this series out, they're going to need some scoring from somebody not named Mark Scheifele. The No. 1 center has scored 14 of his team's 50 goals thus far in the playoffs, a 28 percent clip, including both goals on Wednesday.

Scheifele would have had a hat trick if it weren't for a couple of spectacular saves by Marc-Andre Fleury in the Golden Knights' net. Scheifele's 11 goals on the road are an NHL playoff record.

Forwards Patrik Laine, Bryan Little, Mathieu Perreault and Adam Lowry have been a shadow of their regular-season selves. Laine, who had 44 goals this year, has but four in the postseason and has hit a half-dozen posts.

Ehlers, who had 29 goals, has yet to notch one in 13 games and was a mysterious scratch on Wednesday night.

Little has one goal in 15 playoff games after producing 16 this season, Perreault has just a single point and Lowry hasn't scored since December.

Scheifele, the Jets' first No. 1 draft pick since relocating in 2011, wasn't pointing fingers, choosing instead to praise the Golden Knights.

"We're in the conference finals. They're a good team, too," he told The Winnipeg Sun. "They're going to have their games, we're going to have our games. We can't sulk on this too long. We've got to pick ourselves up."

If nothing else, it should be comforting to the Jets that home ice hasn't been quite the advantage that most people assume it is. Road teams are 38-35 in these playoffs. On the flip side, the Golden Knights are 5-1 at home in the postseason.

There's little question that Fleury has been the star for the home side. In addition to 33 saves on Wednesday, he also took part in a scrum in his crease.

But instead of planting his blocker in somebody's face, he gave Jets captain Blake Wheeler a "wet willie" by sticking his finger in his ear.

"I did that?" Fleury said at his locker afterward. "There are cameras everywhere."

The three-time Stanley Cup winner with the Pittsburgh Penguins has a 10-3 record and a sparkling .945 save percentage in the playoffs.

Vegas' wild playoff run built from bonanza
May 17, 2018

After Bill Foley agreed to pay a whopping $500 million for the right to put a hockey team in the middle of the Mojave Desert, the NHL decided his Vegas Golden Knights deserved a chance for a swift return on that investment.

If the other NHL owners had known just how huge Foley's reward would be - and how incredibly quickly he would get it - they probably wouldn't have been quite so nice to the new guy.

It's too late now, though. After reaping a bonanza from one of the most generous expansion drafts in sports history, the Golden Knights are two victories away from an unbelievable Stanley Cup Final berth.

A brand-new team in a league that has been around for 101 years already has a Pacific Division title, two playoff series victories and a 2-1 lead on the Winnipeg Jets in the Western Conference finals.

''I don't think anybody saw us here,'' Vegas goalie Marc-Andre Fleury said. ''It's been a lot of fun to be part of it. Really proud of this team and the way these guys have been working. We deserve to be here.''

Fleury and the other players accomplishing this feat refer to themselves as the Golden Misfits, yet few of Vegas' expansion draft selections were truly undesired by the clubs that lost them 11 months ago.

Instead, general manager George McPhee took full advantage of his opportunities to compile an uncommonly talented roster, and coach Gerard Gallant turned that roster into a brilliant team in shockingly swift fashion. But it all started with the draft that allowed McPhee to build this monster in less than a year.

''It had a big impact,'' McPhee acknowledged. ''The (expansion draft) rules were favorable. Gave us something to work with, and gave this team an opportunity to be a good team.''

The NHL allowed its teams to protect only seven forwards, three defensemen and one goalie, or eight skaters and one goalie. By way of comparison, when the NHL last expanded in 2000, teams were allowed to protect a whopping nine forwards, five defensemen and a goalie, or seven forwards, three defensemen and two goalies.

The league also required teams to expose players with significant NHL experience who were under contract through next season, closing loopholes and helping Vegas even more. Third-line forwards and top-four defensemen were available from almost every team.

The easiest acquisition was Fleury, of course. The Knights got a three-time Stanley Cup winning goalie with 375 career victories for nothing, and he has largely stayed healthy while playing at a formidable level.

The Knights also landed the likes of James Neal, a proven veteran talent with nine consecutive 20-goal seasons. He scored 25 goals while providing steady veteran leadership.

They plucked William Karlsson, a clearly gifted forward who had yet to reach his full potential with two NHL teams. The Swede swiftly became one of the NHL's best players, racking up 43 goals - an NHL record for an expansion team's first season - and 35 assists along with a plus-49 rating.

And the expansion draft terms allowed McPhee to get creative in trades with teams hoping to keep players who couldn't fit under the protection umbrella. For instance, the Knights ended up with Reilly Smith in a trade because Florida wanted them to draft Jonathan Marchessault - and the two ex-Panthers became two of the Knights' top four scorers.

The draft bounty isn't the only reason these upstart Knights have immediately entered their Golden years.

All of this talent wouldn't have won so many games without Gallant. He built a balanced, disciplined team that has rolled four lines and played relentless two-way hockey while mining untapped talents such as Karlsson and Eric Haula, who scored 29 goals after never managing more than 15 in Minnesota.

''Gerard has done a terrific job of making this a team,'' McPhee said. ''He has really brought a lot of players along, and they've played better than they've played anywhere else.''

Foley bought this opportunity with his $500 million expansion fee, yet nobody in the sports world expected the Golden Knights to put it all together so swiftly. That includes the 73-year-old Foley, who raised eyebrows around the league when he set a public goal of bringing the Stanley Cup to Las Vegas within six years - a goal he later revised to maybe eight years.

Instead, there's an increasingly strong chance the Golden Knights will parade the Stanley Cup down the Strip one month from now. There are 12 other NHL teams that have never won a championship, along with seven franchises that haven't raised the Cup in at least 23 years.

Potential NHL expansion owners in Seattle and Houston are probably thinking $500 million was a bargain, since the expansion fee is likely to go up when the league eventually awards its 32nd franchise. It also seems improbable that the NHL would ever make it this easy to build a team again.

But nothing will erase the Golden Knights' remarkable embrace of this unusual moment in hockey history.

''It was important to the league and to Las Vegas and to Bill Foley that this franchise had a chance to work,'' McPhee said. ''That people that were coming to the games could enjoy the product and become real fans, and we could grow some deep roots in this marketplace. So I didn't mind the rules.''

Vegas nips Jets, owns 3-1 series lead
May 18, 2018

LAS VEGAS (AP) The Vegas Golden Knights were a 500-to-1 long shot to win the Stanley Cup before the NHL season began in October. Their surprisingly successful inaugural season is still rolling along, and they're one win from a berth to the Stanley Cup final.

Reilly Smith scored on a breakaway late in the third period to lead Vegas to a 3-2 victory over the Winnipeg Jets in Game 4 of the Western Conference final Friday night.

Vegas can clinch the conference title and advance to the Stanley Cup final when the series resumes Sunday in Winnipeg.

''The last one is always the toughest to get,'' Golden Knights goalie Marc-Andre Fleury said.

William Karlsson and Tomas Nosek also scored for Vegas, and Fleury, ninth all-time in postseason wins, turned in another spectacular performance by making 36 saves to earn his 73rd career playoff victory. The 14-year veteran goalie, left exposed by the Pittsburgh Penguins for Vegas to select him in the expansion draft, continues to have a career-best postseason as he aims for a third straight Stanley Cup title.

''I think we've got to keep the same mindset,'' said Fleury, who has a 1.72 goals against average and .945 save percentage in the playoffs. ''Just take it one game at time and not think too far ahead and be ready to play that next game, because they're going to be coming hard.''

It's something the Jets have already been doing, even in their three losses in the series.

Asked how his team has been able to survive Winnipeg's tenacious attack, Smith replied: ''He's sitting right next to me,'' referring to Fleury at the postgame news conference.

But with the game tied at 2, it was Smith who made the big play after racing down the left side of the rink and beating Winnipeg's Connor Hellebuyck above his blocker to put the Golden Knights ahead with 6:58 left.

Hellebuyck made 27 saves, but lost for the third consecutive game despite telling reporters after Game 3 that he liked his game better than Fleury's. Patrik Laine and Tyler Myers scored for Winnipeg, which is on the brink of elimination.

''I know we can win a game, we're a good enough team,'' Winnipeg coach Paul Maurice said. ''We've battled. We've gone into some pretty heavy environments and won a game that we needed to win. So it's just one game.''

The Jets took over where they left off in the third period of Game 3 by outskating the Golden Knights in the first period of Game 4, but Karlsson's power-play goal was the difference. Off the draw, Smith found Jonathan Marchessault, who fed Karlsson for the one-timer that gave Vegas a 1-0 lead.

In a case of deja vu from Game 3, when Vegas responded 12 seconds after giving up a 1-0 lead, Winnipeg and the Golden Knights traded goals 43 seconds apart midway through the second period.

First, it was Laine's one-timer on the power play that even Fleury wasn't catching up to and it tied the game at the 9:29 mark. Then, it was Hellebuyck failing to secure a shot by Pierre-Edouard Bellemare, who raced to the puck and fed Nosek, who punched in his first career playoff goal to put Vegas up 2-1.

''It's a good way to be, when they get one, the next guy's up and ready to go,'' said Golden Knights forward James Neal, who is looking to make it to the Stanley Cup final for a second consecutive year after getting there with Nashville last season. ''It's always hard when you get one and the other team scores right away, it kind of takes the wind right back out of you. For us being at home, it just energizes the building. As soon as it sucks the wind out, boom, huge goal, and we're back.

''That was a great goal by Nose.''

The Jets outshot the Golden Knights 12-2 by the midway point of the third period - including Myers' tying goal - keeping Fleury busy. But the three-time Cup champion was finished allowing anything in his net.

''We win that game nine times out of 10 - tonight was that one,'' Winnipeg's Blake Wheeler said. ''Their goalie made some extraordinary saves, he's a good player. You've got to sometimes take your hat off to a good player.''

NOTES: The Golden Knights and Jets joined a record 18,697 in attendance in a moment of silence for those affected by the shootings at Santa Fe High School in Texas on Friday. ... Jets forward Mark Scheifele, who registered his 10th and 11th road goals in Game 3 to set a single-year NHL postseason record, had his six-game goal streak as a visitor end.

Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

Odds to win the Super Bowl this coming season:

100-1: Washington Redskins, Arizona Cardinals

80-1: Bengals, Browns, Bills, Jets, Dolphins, Bucs, Seahawks

60-1: Indianapolis Colts, Chicago Bears

50-1: New Jersey Giants, Baltimore Ravens

40-1: Denver Broncos

30-1: Detroit Lions, Carolina Panthers

**********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here??.

13) Solid food recommendation here in Las Vegas: Villa Pizzeria on Durango Drive. Really good pizza, and not expensive at all. Nice people work there and they had four TV?s in there showing the Golden Knights? game. One of best pizzas I?ve ever had.

12) National League hasn?t won the season series from the AL since 2003; they?re off to a 37-16 lead so far this season.

11) Talk about how fragile life is: Texas governor Green Abbott uses a wheelchair. Why?

Back in the 80?s, when Abbott was a law student, he went out jogging one day and a tree fell on him, severely injuring his spine, which is why he has used a wheelchair ever since. What are the odds that someone goes out jogging and gets hit by a damn falling tree?

10) Major league record for most one-hitter thrown by one team in same season?

The 2015 Cleveland Indians threw six one-hitters.

9) Former Louisville AD Tom Jurich gets $4.5M from the school to take a hike. I mean, the guy got fired and still gets $4.5M.

8) Texas center Mo Bamba has a wingspan of 7-feet, 10 inches, the longest wingspan ever recorded at the NBA Combine.

7) Orioles won 7-4 in Boston Friday, snapping a 13-game road losing streak. Boston is 13-13 since starting the season 17-2.

6) QB Blake Barnett will be eligible to play ball at South Florida this year, after going to Alabama and Arizona State; he started the first game of Alabama?s 2016 season but was benched before halftime of their opener with USC and never got his job back.

5) In their history, NHL?s Washington Capitals are 3-5 in series when they grabbed a 2-0 series lead. By way of comparison, Montreal is 51-5 in series that they led 2-0.

4) Ohio State graduate transfer quarterback Joe Burrow has committed to finishing out his collegiate career at LSU; he?ll have two years to play in Baton Rouge. LSU beat out Cincinnati for the young man?s services.

3) NFL star JJ Watt is going to pay for all ten funerals of the people who were murdered in Texas Friday. Watt is a great football player but a way better person.

2) I?d be remiss if I didn?t say something else about the shooting in Texas Friday; as Americans, it is our duty to speak our minds, while we still have the right to do so.

It makes me want to puke to hear a politician invoke religion, or God, or ?Sorry for your loss? after the 22nd school shooting this year. It is May 19, so in 138 days, we?ve had 22 shootings in a school. If you?re bad at Math, thats one every 6.27 days.

Hanging flags at half-staff means jack; tightening the gun laws would mean a whole lot more. Other countries have virtually eliminated these types of murders. Why can?t we?

1) Our politicians are so damn corrupt that even though ONE OF THEIR OWN SENATORS GOT SHOT last year, they are still in the NRA?s pocket. They should all be ashamed of themselves.

NHL Eastern Confernce Finals Game 5 betting preview: Capitals at Lightning

The road team is a perfect 4-0 thus far in the Eastern Conference Finals. Can Ovechkin and the Caps keep that trend going or will the Bolts break through on home ice?

Washington Capitals at Tampa Bay Lightning (-170, 6)

Series tied 2-2

Neither team has figured out a way to win on home ice yet in the Eastern Conference finals as the Washington Capitals visit the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday for Game 5 of the best-of-seven series. The Capitals had a 7-1 edge in even-strength goals to dominate the first two games in Tampa Bay and the Lightning responded by winning two in Washington with a red-hot power play and brilliant goaltending from Andrei Vasilevskiy.

?It?s pretty bizarre,? Tampa Bay captain Steven Stamkos, who has six goals in the last seven games, told reporters, ?but you come on the road and there?s just this business-like attitude where you?re together as a group, you?re with each other for dinner, you?re watching the other game, you?re playing cards, you?re going into the hockey rink and just playing.? Vasilevskiy stopped 72 of the 76 shots he faced the last two games and the Capitals will have to find a way to cool off the Lightning power play, which is 6-for-14 in the series and that does not include Alex Killorn?s winning goal in Thursday?s 4-2 triumph that came six seconds after a man advantage. Washington, which is 7-1 on the road in the postseason, can?t complain about the chances it created the last two games at home - outshooting Tampa Bay 76-43 combined - and has a 145-99 edge in shots during the series. ?It?s a missed opportunity,? Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin told reporters. ?It is what it is. Nothing we can do. We?re not going to look back. We?re just going to look forward. This group of guys has been in different situations all year and we fight through it.?

Preview: Capitals (49-26) at Lightning (54-23)
Date: May 19, 2018 7:15 PM EDT

TAMPA, Fla. -- Four games into the Eastern Conference final, the Tampa Bay Lightning and Washington Capitals are tied 2-2, but getting there hasn't been anything as expected.

The road team has won all four games, with Washington dominating its way to a 2-0 lead in Tampa, only to see the Lightning pull back even with two road wins themselves.

The Capitals are 7-1 on the road and 3-5 at home in the playoffs, so do the Lightning really have an advantage with two of the remaining three games at Amalie Arena?

"It seems like in this series, the pressure shifts on the home team," said Lightning coach Jon Cooper, whose team is 5-1 on the road in the playoffs against the New Jersey Devils, Boston Bruins and Capitals. "The big, glaring 0-4 is staring at you. Home-ice advantage has been a disadvantage in this series. Having said that, I'd rather have Game 5 at home. I believe we'll be a different team than we showed up in Games 1 and 2."

In a battle of division winners, the Lightning are in the conference final for the third time in four years and the Capitals are here for the first time in 20 years.

Which will be the advantage to push one team to the Stanley Cup final?

Capitals forward Tom Wilson said the advantages of home ice are lessened in the playoffs, when both teams have ample energy and intensity because of what's on the line.

"It doesn't really matter this time of year, whether you're home or away," Wilson said after the Game 4 loss. "Every game is huge and the emotion is going to be there. Road, home, it doesn't matter. We're going to go after it and hopefully get the next one."

Special teams have been at the center of Tampa Bay's turnaround, as well as stellar play in net from Vezina Trophy finalist Andrei Vasilevskiy. The Lightning have gone 6 of 14 on their power play in the series, improving on the success rate for what was the NHL's best power play in the regular season.

Even more impressively, Tampa Bay's penalty kill, which ranked in the bottom five of the league in the regular season, went 7 of 7 on killing off Capitals power plays in the last two games. Three of those came in the final eight minutes of the first period Thursday night, as Tampa Bay held onto a 2-1 lead.

Steven Stamkos has dominated on the power play -- six of his seven postseason goals and six of his nine postseason assists have come on that unit, matching Nikita Kucherov for the team scoring lead with 16 total points each.

Evgeny Kuznetsov and Alex Ovechkin both have 10 goals to pace the Capitals, who now have the confidence that comes with playing on the road.

Tampa Bay tied for the NHL lead with 25 road wins in the regular season, but it will need to win a home game to win this series. Overall in the playoffs, road teams are 40-34, on pace to challenge the NHL record for most postseason wins by a road team -- 47 in 2012.

Lightning hold off Caps, lead 3-2
May 19, 2018

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) The Tampa Bay Lightning are on the brink of a return trip to the Stanley Cup Final.

Coach Jon Cooper and his players say it won't be easy to close the deal against the Washington Capitals.

''We haven't won anything yet,'' Cooper said Saturday night after Cedric Paquette scored in the opening minute and Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 28 shots to help the Lightning hold off the Caps 3-2 in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference final.

Ondrej Palat and Ryan Callahan also scored as the home team won for the first time in the best-of-seven matchup, with Tampa Bay taking a 3-2 series lead and moving within one victory of advancing to the Stanley Cup Final for the second time in four seasons.

''Let's be honest,'' Cooper added. ''You've got to get four, not three.''

The Capitals, in the conference final for the first time in the Alex Ovechkin era, have lost three straight after winning twice on the road to begin the series.

Ovechkin scored with 1:36 remaining, trimming what once was a three-goal lead to one, however Vasilevskiy made three more saves to finish the victory.

Game 6 is Monday night in Washington, where Tampa Bay has already won to improve to 5-1 on the road this postseason.

''We have a lot of unfinished business. This isn't even close to being over,'' Callahan said. ''This last game's definitely the hardest against a very, very good Washington team. ''To go in their building and try to close it out is going to be tough.''

The Capitals were encouraged by the way they finished the game and are confident they can force the series back to Tampa for Game 7.

''This group has got its backs against the wall, and this group has responded all year,'' coach Barry Trotz said. ''I don't expect anything different.''

The Capitals won the first two games on the road, scoring 10 goals on Vezina Trophy finalist Vasilevskiy and sending the Lightning - won had the best record in the East during the regular season - into desperation mode.

Tampa Bay responded by winning Game 3 in Washington, evening the series despite being outshot and outplayed for sizeable stretches of a 4-2 victory in Game 4 and returning home, where Cooper was confident the Lightning would be better than they were in the first two games.

Turns out Cooper was right.

Washington's Dmitry Orlov turned the puck over in the neutral zone on the opening shift of the night and Callahan made the Caps pay for the mistake, feeding Paquette for a 1-0 lead just 19 seconds into the game.

Palat's second goal of the series made it 2-0. Tampa Bay extended the advantage to three goals when Callahan scored 33 seconds into the second period.

Outshot 13-4 and limited to one scoring opportunity in the opening period, the Caps began to put some pressure on Vasilevskiy in the second.

Evgeny Kuznetsov scored a goal in his fourth straight game, giving him a franchise single-year, playoff-best 22 points (11 goals, 11 assists) and trimming Washington's deficit to 3-1 at 4:21 of the period.

The Capitals kept pressing in the third period, but didn't breakthrough against until Ovechkin scored his 11th goal this postseason.

''It's not frustrating,'' Ovechkin said. ''Of course, when you lose a game you feel bad. We just had a bad start. We didn't handle the puck in the neutral zone. They got a lucky bounce and put in the first goal. That gave them momentum.''

''It's disappointing, but I thought our second two periods were great,'' Capitals winger T.J. Oshie said. ''We showed a lot of character. Character doesn't always win you games, but I think it's going to be important to have that feeling going into Game 6 at home.''

Notes: The road team won each of the first four games of a series for the sixth time in the last 10 years and 26th time in Stanley Cup playoffs history. Under that scenario, the road team has won Game 5 only three times. ... Paquette's goal was his first in the playoffs since Game 3 of the 2015 Stanley Cup Final, ending a 34-game drought for the 24-year-old center. ... At 19 seconds of the opening period, Palat's goal was not the fastest to start a game in Lightning history. Adam Hall scored for Tampa Bay 13 seconds into Game 2 of the Eastern Conference final against Boston in 2011. ... Capitals winger Andre Burakovsky was a game-time scratch.

Armadillo: May 17, 1979: Phillies 23, Cubs 22?.a recap

On May 17, 1979, Phillies beat the Cubs 23-22 in 10 innings, in one of the strangest games ever:

13) Phillies were 24-10 at the time; Chicago was 16-16. Cubs had 26 hits in the game, Phils had 24.

12) The game was 7-6 Phillies, after the first inning. Somewhere, someone bet the under in this game.

11) Phillies starting pitcher Randy Lerch homered in the top of the first inning, never finished the bottom of the first. Both starting pitchers got only one out before being removed.

10) Pete Rose, Mike Schmidt hit 3rd/4th in Phillies? order; they combined to score seven runs and knock in eight. Light-hitting Larry Bowa was 5 for 8 in the game.

9) Bob Boone was 3-4 with five RBI?s; his son Aaron is now the manager in the Bronx. Boone and Schmidt were both walked intentionally twice.

8) Reliever Tug McGraw faced 10 batters; seven of them scored. McGraw is the father of the great singer Tim McGraw.

7) 22 of the first 53 Cubs who came to bat scored, but Rawly Eastwick slammed the door shut in the last two innings, retiring all six Cubs he faced.

6) Donnie Moore faced 14 batters and seven of them scored, but he did hit a triple, one of his two career three-baggers.

5) Phillies led this game 21-9 in the 5th inning but Cubs tied the game off of Ron Reed in the 8th inning; Reed pitched 19 years in the major leagues and also played 119 games for the NBA?s Detroit Pistons from 1965-67.

4) Dave Kingman hit three homers for the Cubs; Bill Buckner knocked in seven runs, seven years before his infamous error in the ?86 World Series.

3) Phillies went home the next day and got swept in a 3-game series by the Expos. Chicago lost its next four games after this one.

2) 1979 turned out to be the only year in a six-year stretch where the Phillies missed the playoffs; they finished 84-78, the Cubs 80-82.

Phillies fired manager Danny Ozark late in 1979, hired Dallas Green and won the ?80 World Series.

1) Naysayers like to criticize baseball now but attendance that day was 14,952; when was last time the Cubs drew less than 15,000 for a home game?
