I am having a problem with internet explorer
version 5.0. I keep getting the illegal operation almost everytime i am surfing the web. Even when my screen saver comes on and no browser is opened the illegal operation will come up. I have even tried to switch to netscape and when i go to use the setup program for netscape, guess what about 40% thru the setup i get the illegal operation.

I have sifted thru microcraps webboard looking for answers and none have worked so far. I have no viruses on my system. I had it checked it with panda antivirus and at pcpitstop. I even checked my root directory for the pretty park virus non found.

here is an example of what I get for error messaging:

IEXPLORE executed an invalid instruction in
module SWFLASH.OCX at 023f:017dfc4d.

I get different errors at different times. No matter where I am surfing or doing as long as I am using a i.e. browser. I have tried using the repair option but it will not work.

I have nener had this problem before until 3 weeks ago. My cooling fan went out on my processor, when it happened I do not know. I started getting the error messages all the time and eventually my machine froze up and could not access anything the blue screen of death was all I got. Before I reformatted I decide to clean the inside of my system and noticed the fan not running. Processor was a little warm. Bought a new fan and formatted hard drive and the same thing happens. Not locking my machine totally up yet but sometimes I do have to reboot because the screen will freeze after the illegal operation message.

I asked a expert if the processor could cause this and he said the problem is with I.E. Program itself. Ok then how the heel do I fix it. I have upgraded to 5.5 that didn't work. Tried the beta 6.0 no luck there. Now I am back to 5.0 again with the same problem.

I hope I have explained this the best I can and it is understandable. Thanks for you help if possible.

Notice that 023f... comes back everytime. Looks like a RAM block address...

.... I'm no good with hardwares, but if you really formatted the hard disk and it still doesn't work then it might be a problem with you RAM.... And here really, I insist, it *might*. This is really not my "thing".

Thanks for replies so far. Fletch I do delete cookies, history and temp files everyday. i also free'd up 4000 mb of disk space for files in internet options to see if i was geeting overloaded and that did not help.

katts i have got the errors also without the o23f. I had one too paste in here just a minute ago without that and my machine locked up and had to reboot. so i could not paste the error message. I'm ready to throw this thing in the trash. I have been able to fix almost every software glich I have every had but this one has me baffled.

Microsoft vharges for support and I would hate to have them help me for money that is. Seems like support should be free to paying customers

Did you FDISK your hard drive before the format? After the format, you loaded Win98 from your Win98 CD I assume. Did you load any other software at that time? Did Win98 have the drivers for you Video (Voodoo 3) or did you load them from another source (diskette, CD)?

I think your problem is either in your RAM, or in your video adaptor. Page Faults generally indicate bad memory (RAM). An invalid instruction can be RAM or video. The last error is a doozy, EXPLORER refers to a kernel, not Internet Explorer, which again leads me to believe that the problem is in RAM. Unfortunately, I don't know enough about real addresses to tell you if the memory being referenced is in RAM or on your video card.

First think I would try is to download the latest VOODOO 3 drivers from their website and load them up. I've seen the drivers cause similar problems to this also.

Good luck, I do this kind of crap for a living and these kinds of problems are always a BITCH!!

Skinar voodoo 3 drivers are not available from creative labs anymore. I did download the latest drivers from a 3dfx site. these are not the drivers that came with the vid card. But I believe I had these drivers installed before. Or maybe not. Should I take my vid card out and reinstall or just delete drivers and install the ones that came with the card?

also how is the best way to delet drivers?

Get rid of IE 5.0 and download IE 5.5 as that is latest version. Their were many bugs with 5.0 and thus they corrected them in the 5.5 release.

downloaded 5.5 and have same problems. never had a problem with 5.o ever before. until now. i am beginning to think skinar is correct. but i switched my ram with some 256 100 mhz and that did not work. also went into my system in my control panel. removed video card and rebooted. plug and play picked vid card up again and i installed the original drivers. but have same problems.

By no means am I an expert, but I had something just like this to happen to me about 4 years ago. My computer kept locking up time after time. I tried EVERYTHING! aLthough I don't remember what the error messages said exactly, I do know that they resembled the ones you posted. After 3-4 months of periodic freezes throughout the day, I finally figured it out. My fan was working on my server, but it failed to cool my processor enough. I moved my server to another room and bought one of those clip fans and put behind it. I never had another problem again. The way I found out was that I started to begin to notice that when I took the metal cover off my machine, it worked perfectly.

Another similiar situation occured a few months ago. My friggin computer would freeze at different times throughout the day. It wouldn't let me do anything, not even a soft boot. Only way to restart was to just shut the damn thing off and boot back up(which isn't good for your machine). I put a new video card in it, and it has worked wonderfully since.

What kind of machine do ya have??
