your problem is with the flash or shockwave module.

uninstall it.

if you absolutely need shockwave, then re-install it.

you may also have a virus.
what virus program are you using? if it is not Innoculate from computer associates, GET RID OF IT. anything else SUX! trust me.
especially Norton and McAfee version 5.
uninstall yours.
go here: http://www.tcs.ca/Links.htm
get Innoculate and install it. first thing you will notice is your machine runs about 30% faster.

i own a computer store. and have for 12 years. if i repair 15 systems a day ... 10 are virus related.

also, i doubt very much you have a 40 meg HD!
Win98 wouldn't fit on it!
most likely 40 Gig ... right?
if not, you better upgrade it.

forgot, Innoculate isn't free anymore.
but at $20 and then $10/year it might as well be.

anyway, you can get the trial first if you want.

Neverteaseit, it's proably not your computer. Somewhere in the system is a poorly writen program and everytime your computer runs accross it or maybe more than 1, the program sends your computer out looking for something that doesn't exist. This either locks the system or causes the message.

Eric, you should delete the temp inter files every day.

Prospector I.E. won't even let me view that page. everytime i click the link, the antivirus webpage starts to come up and then the good old illegal operation comes up. have tried it about 20 times same results. ughhhhhhh! i am going to try and remove the shockwave files. yes i do need shockwave, my homw page uses shockwave for movies and such. i did delete it and re-install before tho. now i deleted it from the directory as it does not have and unistall program that i can find. is there a better way to delete the entire program. thanks for help so far.

This is a real stumper. If I was trying to fix this one I would do the following:

fdisk, format, load Win98 SE from CD.
Then, I would just let the system run for a day, full 24 hours to see if any errors occur. If so, then you have hardware problems, motherboard, processor, RAM, bad video card, something in that order, but the only way to tell at that point is to begin switching things out unless you've got a $1000 system tester that plugs into a slot and runs it's own operating system.

If you pass the first test, crank up Explorer without any plugins. See what happens.

The only way you'll find the problem is to test one thing at a time. Build slowly and test thoroughly through each step.

... or build another one.

One other question. Are you overclocked anywhere? A lot of the clone motherboard manufacturers like to overclock their boards to boost their performance numbers, but then it leads to problems like the ones you are experiencing.

Well if I can't get it fixed the I am going to a 1.2 gig thunderbird then. but this is b.s. I think i have a software conflict but I cannot figure out where.

which is not expensive either.
with new 330 watt mini-tower
1.2 gig processor t-bird,orb fan and asus a7v133 motherboard
512 ram 133 mhz

only $429.00

if you guys need ram now is the time to get it

256 is only $45.00
100mhz or 133mhz

I had a similar problem before and removing IE and re-installing it worked, but if you are getting it with Netscape, too, then it is probably a hardware or OS issue.

Go to the c:\windows\downloaded program files\ directory and right click on the Shockwave Flash Object and click remove.

Click your START menu and go to RUN, type in MSCONFIG, go to START MENU tab and uncheck all the startup items. If problem continues go back and check them as this wasn't the fix. However if problem does stop, go back and add them back in one at a time until you find the program causing the conflict. I had this prob w/one of the office notebooks, taking them out worked fine.
