I was surfin on the net and clicked on the wrong thing. All of a sudden my computer froze up but the tower sounded like something was being downloaded so I pulled the plug on it. I restarted it and I think I have a virus. Now when I open the internet explorer to go on the web this shows up in my address bar...C:/windows/System32/msblank.html..When I change the homepage manually it automatically goes back to the other thing.

I ran norton antivirus 2003 (never updated) and it didnt find anything. I also ran SpySweeper but nothing. I even moved the computer back a couple of weeks but that still didnt help. (running XP)

The wife keeps asking what happened and I keep telling her it dosent matter how it happened ..it just did.

now the creation & setting of this file is controlled by a small .exe program running in the background called "popcorn32.exe" which resides in the same "system32" directory...

to get rid of it once and for all... press Ctrl-Alt-Del and goto the Processes tab...
select "popcorn32" and click 'end process'
after that navigate to the "system32" directory & delete both "msblank.html" & "popcorn32.exe"
this should get rid of the problem hopefully!

Also go to your start menu and type msconfig in the run line and hit enter, go to the last tab and look for popcorn32.exe

Then I would download:
Microsoft Anti-spyware for protection
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

If this above does not work your going to have to dig deep to fix this one

Bubba, you could at least thank bsucards or let him know if the problem is still there.

Cisco..If you wanted an update dont be a dick about it. I did what he suggested but the problem is still there so I figured I would go out and get a anti-virus program tonight and give it a try before I responded back.

I will make sure to ask you from now on what the time length is to respond to a thread.

I looked up "wrong thing" in the Dictionary (Madjacks version 2005 pat. pending)........."Usually a hyperlink located on the Net directing one to pornograpic material which usually leads to unwanted questions from spouse".

"doesn't matter" term one uses when caught looking at said matieral and wife knows...........

I got a anti-virus program called avast and ran it thru. It found about 5 trojans (I dont think they were rubbers) so I had them removed. Fired back up the computer and the same thing was happening. I turned back the computer as far as I could (3 months) and it took care of the problem. I may have had this virus for a while and never knew.

Thanks for the info Bsucards...I probably screwed something up or missed something while trying it your way..thats why I dont think I could get it to work. I still dont know how it could have gotten past my firewall... I am running Zone Alarm and Spy Sweeper so something usually pops up asking me if I want things downloaded or added to the computer.
