Ronnie Earle has a history of using his office for attacks on his political and personal enemies.

?Earle has demonstrated a past zeal for indicting conservative figures and even liberals with whom he has personal or professional disagreements. (Target: DeLay, National Review, April 11, 2005)

Earle's partisan prosecutions - which have frequently failed - are designed for political harm, not legal harm. Earle is the same partisan prosecutor who politically indicted and failed to convict:

Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison
Conservative Democrat Bob Bullock (when he was Comptroller - later he was Lt. Governor)
Democrat Attorney General Jim Mattox

Ronnie Earle's three year political vendetta against Rep. DeLay has been marked by:

Illegal grand jury leaks,
A fundraising speech by Earle for the Texas Democrat party that inappropriately focused on the investigation,
Misuse of his office for partisan purposes, and
Extortion of money for Earle's pet projects from corporations in exchange for dismissing indictments he brought against them.

Ronnie Earle has been frequently criticized for his methods:

The Dallas Morning News criticized Earle in the Hutchison case:

"the impression of partisan unfairness has certainly been reinforced by the leaks and public comment about Hutchison's case from the District Attorney's office throughout the summer. That the Grand Jury investigation has been conducted with so much fanfare such as the tip-offs to the new media when key records were seized from the former treasurer's office has added a darker tone to the cloudy proceedings." (Hutchison Probe; Fair and Speedy trial is essential, The Dallas Morning News, September 28, 1993)

The Houston Chronicle called into question Earle's impartiality and judgment:

"The fact that Earle refuses to recognize his blunder and would do it again calls into question whether he has the necessary impartiality and judgment to conduct the investigation that to a great extent will determine whether Texas election campaigns will be financed and perhaps determined by corporations or by individuals."

I'm not soft on crime--I only stated that his alleged crime would not be a crime in 32 states. I think it is obvious that "the squirrel" has an agenda--has there ever been a case that was taken before grand jury 6 times before they could get an indictment.

Now I think this will definately go no where for lack of evidence (not that he's innocent) my reasasoning it was thrown out 5 times and they had to drop charge to conspiracy.

Strangely different than the reactions when Sandy Berger was only ACCUSED of walking away with classified papers, BEFORE he was proven guilty.

If he is convicted, will we see the constant posts by the usual people decrying the fact that Delay 'committed perjury to a grand jury?' I think not.

Lets see --we are comparing Clinton crony caught on tape stealing documents vs soft money issue--no comment

i would just as soon see the Sugarland/Richmond conservatives step up and get someone else in there instead of this big spender

as far as the DeLay situation, from my perspective, the party is now strengthened with DeLay's removal as he has become an ineffective conservative and evolved into a big spender...most people in SW Houston voted for the bum just like we voted for Bush....there was a far worse alternative

Don't think Starr was reason for money spent DJV--all Clinton had to do was cum clean --as it turned out he was quilty--do you not prosecute the quilty--what is ironic is you now have someone that has to step down on very suspect charge and someone convicted of felonies remains in office?? On an interesting note I doubt if you ever see Bill move to 3 strike an out felony state--cause he's at the plate with 0-2 count ---wouldn't it be justice.

Now some fresh pickings from the Political Grapevine:

Ronnie Earle (search), the Texas prosecutor who indicted Tom DeLay, denies any political motivation for his investigation into the Republican leader. But Earle was the featured speaker at a Democratic fundraiser earlier this year, where the Houston Chronicle reports Earle compared DeLay to a bully, and talked about political corruption and the DeLay investigation.

And this summer, Earle dropped felony charges against four corporations indicted for making illegal contributions to Delay's political action committee, in exchange for contributing as much as $1 million to one of his pet causes. The National Review reports that after at least one company balked at the sum, Earle settled for pledges of up to $100,000 to a University of Texas program on how corporations influence American democracy.

I think someone commented on this earlier but it always gives me a chuckle to see how the right wing members of this board spin one of their own getting his tit caught in the ringer. Wayne softly suggests that he's no fan of this psycho but then again, what he allegedly did was legal in many states.

If this had been someone outside of the club, ie Clinton, Kerry, Edwards, et al. you would have seen post after post on this board displaying rightous indignation at such conduct, demanding the culprits head and first born as well as frying the corporate media for taking it easy on the left wing scum.

Once again, these are two separate issues, if Delay broke the law, he should pay for it. Apparently, there is enough evidence to at least investigate it. That is what grand juries are for.

Thought you might be interested in this. It's as off-topic as a Clinton pardons post in a FEMA thread, but saw one of the better Saved By The Bell episodes this morning.

It was the one where Slaters dad, who was in the military, was pushing Slater into going to West Point, but Slater wanted to go to University of Iowa on a wrestling scholarship. His dad made him agree to meeting with a congressman who would pull strings to get him into West Point.

Well, the gang came up with a plan. Since the congressman had never seen Slater before, Zack put a a black wig and went to the meeting pretending to be Slater. He acted like a total whackjob. Jumping up on the desk firing an air machine gun..etc....

When it came out, Slaters dad was ultra pissed and said he was going to 'ship out' two days earlier than planned and as a result would miss Slaters state championship wrestling match.

Slater was very sad. Then, right before the match, his dad comes through the locker room door, along with Zack. You see, Zack had 'talked to' Slaters dad and convinced him to stay in town for the match. As Slaters dad said, 'Zack can be very persuasive.' Indeed, Slaters dad, indeed.

Freeze, as a SW Houston resident who is all too familiar with this clown, I couldn't agree more.

Delay is the prototypical wheeler-dealer politician who works best from the smoke filled back rooms. There is little question that he indeed is responsible for what he is accused of only he doesn't believe that it should be illegal so he is playing the ?partisan? card. How predictable this is I can not begin to tell you.

The fact is that it was the brand of partisan politics that he and his lackeys were playing that got him into this mess to begin with. Only in the last few years has the Republican Party been in control of the Texas legislature and once in control, they proceeded to redraw the voting boundaries throughout the state so that they were extremely favorable to their own party. Anyone who doubts this need only look at the voting map and try to explain any other reason for the very haphazard manner in which these voting lines meander in and around the poorer and more affluent neighborhoods of the metropolitan areas. Delay was the ghost writer of those new boundaries.

Delay and his cronies have now been caught influencing a number of elections throughout the state by diverting corporate contributions through his ?Political Action Committee? and providing advertising for their preferred candidates that skirted the letter of the law. Delay feels that he is above the laws governing this type of behavior but has now been indicted for it.

Here?s the rub. Delay has major dirt on everyone in Washington and he is the kind of guy who will not hesitate to use it to his advantage. This prosecutor, Ronnie Earl, has no idea about the can of worms he has opened up for himself and I am confident that Delay will absolutely ruin this man?s career as well as the lives of he and his family. It would not surprise me in the least if Ted Kennedy himself came down here to have a talk with Earle in an attempt to have these charges dismissed. Those are the kind of strings that Delay can and will pull if necessary.
