First Derby Future Wagering Results

The opening pool of Churchill Downs?s Kentucky Derby Future Wager closed at 6 p.m. EST on February 15 with few surprises as the mutuel field of all other three-year-olds not individually listed closed as the 2-to-1 favorite.

The field has been the favorite in the first pool for each of the 11 years Churchill has offered the wager.

This year?s initial pool attracted $478,721 in handle, a 9% increase compared with last year but still the second-lowest total since 2001. Total handle for the future wager since its inception in 1999 has now surpassed $13-million.

Impressive performances by Gulf News United Arab Emirates Two Thousand Guineas (UAE-G3) winner Desert Party and runner-up Regal Ransom, Sam F. Davis Stakes (G3) winner General Quarters, and allowance winners Captain Cherokee and Imperial Council, coupled with two graded stakes races for three-year-olds scheduled for February 16, probably helped make the field the favorite.

Undefeated Old Fashioned, last year?s Remsen Stakes (G2) winner and a finalist for champion two-year-old male, was entered in the Southwest Stakes (G3) on President?s Day at Oaklawn Park. He closed as the 7-to-1 favorite among the 23 horses listed individually.

Last year?s two-year-old champions, male Midshipman and filly Stardom Bound closed at 19-to-1 and 22-to-1, respectively. The only other horses at less than 23-to-1 were Risen Star Stakes (G3) winner Friesan Fire at 18-to-1, Lecomte Stakes (G3) runner-up (to Friesan Fire) Patena at 22-to-1, and Robert B. Lewis Stakes (G2) winner Pioneerof the Nile at 13-to-1.

Churchill will offer two other future wagers leading up to the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) on May 2 in Louisville. Pool 2 runs from March 12 through March 15 and Pool 3 runs from April 2 through April 5. Both pools will feature exacta wagering, and Pool 2 also will include a separate pool for future wagering on the Kentucky Oaks (G1), which is slated for May 1.

Fountain of Youth speedsters work

By Mike Welsch
HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - This Ones for Phil and Notonthesamepage, the two fastest 3-year-olds in the country according to the Beyer Speed Figures, were a contrast in styles when turning in their final preps for their much-anticipated confrontation in Saturday's $250,000 Fountain of Youth at Gulfstream Park.

This Ones for Phil was the first horse to work when the track reopened following the renovation break at 7:30 a.m., and the winner of the Sunshine Millions Dash was sizzling from the moment he left the six-furlong pole under Mario Madrid. This Ones for Phil posted fractions of 11.55 seconds, 22.74, 34.06, and 45.55 for his opening half-mile before tiring a bit down the stretch to complete six furlongs in 1:11.66.

Notonthesamepage followed shortly thereafter. Breaking off a couple of lengths behind regular workmate Osceola Prince, Notonthesamepage began at a more leisurely pace of 23.89 and 47.27 for the opening quarter- and half-mile before easily running past his stablemate to complete five furlongs in 59.36. As usual, jockey Elvis Trujillo was aboard.

Despite the two different types of works, both trainers were happy with what they saw and are ready to get it on in the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth.

"He was working over a fresh track - I love a fresh track, babe - and he didn't look like he was going that fast," said Rick Dutrow, who trains This Ones for Phil. "I'm as happy as can be. I wouldn't be if Mario was hitting him with a stick when he came by me, but he wasn't. The horse was doing it all on his own."

Dutrow, who watched the work from his usual vantage point near the three-eighths pole, said he'll follow the same routine with This Ones for Phil as he did prior to the Sunshine Millions Dash, galloping him daily the remainder of the week before blowing him out the morning of the race. This Ones for Phil earned a 116 Beyer Figure for his victory in the Dash.

"We're ready to run," said Dutrow. "It's going to be a very good race. I just hope we draw an outside post."

Trainer Wesley Ward Jr. was equally delighted with Notonthesamepage's work on Saturday. Notonthesamepage received a 114 Beyer for his runaway win in the Spectacular Bid.

"Everything's great," said Ward. "He scoped clean as a whistle and couldn't blow out a match when he pulled up today. He always trains behind horses and relaxes, but it's one thing to do it in the morning and another thing once they get in the gate. When they open the gate, all he knows is go. It should be a great race. I just wish it was coming up easier."

This Ones for Phil and Notonthesamepage were two of the five prospective Fountain of Youth starters to work around south Florida on Saturday.

Theregoesjojo, who defeated the highly regarded Quality Road under allowance conditions early in the meet, worked five furlongs in 1:01.40 at Gulfstream.

"I sat him behind horses and he ran by them down the lane," said trainer Ken McPeek. "He went his final furlong in 12. This race isn't the end-all for us. I haven't got him cranked up for this. I'm using it as a prep for something. We've still got time for one or maybe two more starts before the Derby."

At Palm Meadows, trainer Kiaran McLaughlin sent out his undefeated Taqarub to drill a bullet half-mile in 47, while at Calder, Bee Cee Cee went five-eighths in 1:01.80.

The field for the Fountain of Youth is also expected to include Break Water Edison, Jack Spratt, Salo Jak, Capt. Candyman Can, Beethoven, and Quality Road.

Midshipman Out of Triple Crown - Injured

Midshipman Injured, Out of Triple Crown

Email Print RSS ShareThisFrom Godolphin press release

Last year?s American Champion two-year-old Midshipman will miss the Triple Crown Series after he sustained a minor soft tissue injury to his left fore leg during routine exercise at Godolphin?s Al Quoz Stables in Dubai yesterday.

He will now require a period of time out of training but the prognosis for a return to racing in the second half of the year is favourable.

Racing Manager Simon Crisford said: ?Unfortunately Midshipman has knocked himself and inevitably this injury will rule him out of the Triple Crown races.

?It is a huge shame as he had been pleasing us enormously and was ready to make his reappearance next Thursday.

?He is scheduled to return to America in early April and hopefully he will be back on the track later in the season.

?We can't risk him right now as we need to give his injury time to settle. It is in his best interest to give him time to return to peak fitness later in the year

Don?t dismiss early Kentucky Derby favorite after Rebel loss

By GARY WESTgwest@star-telegram.com

Larry Jones didn?t blame Ramon Dominguez for the loss. Assigning blame often wastes time that could be better spent finding solutions. And so instead of blaming the jockey for Old Fashioned?s loss, Jones has replaced him.

Terry Thompson, the trainer said, will ride Old Fashioned on April 11 in the $1 million Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park.

Sitting atop 1,100 pounds of impetuosity isn?t like straddling a moped, and so it?s only with hesitation that I ever criticize jockeys. Their job is both dangerous and difficult. They have to make split-second decisions that only in retrospect seem clear.

Still, Dominguez?s ride on Old Fashioned in the recent Rebel Stakes won?t be something the jockey will want to include on a r?sum?. Old Fashioned entered the Rebel as the early favorite for the Kentucky Derby. He came out of it with his first loss, to a 56-1 long shot named Win Willy who rallied from last, and with questions about his stamina.

But given the strange circumstances of that loss, Old Fashioned actually gave an outstanding performance. And he still deserves to be regarded as one of the leaders on the road to the Triple Crown.

The Oaklawn surface was officially "good" for the Rebel. Actually, though, it was slow and tiring, drying out from the previous day?s rain. Dominguez didn?t ride another race on Saturday?s program. But if he had been watching closely, he would have seen just how dull the surface was.

Oaklawn?s second race was run in 1:46.87 for the 1 1/16 miles, a dawdling time for a group of allowance competitors. The ninth race, which matched some capable older horses, was run in 1:45.84. And the opening half-mile in those two races averaged 48.03 seconds, a soporific clocking.

This was a situation that called for patience, for conserving energy. It wasn?t a day for headlong speedsters or for chasing speedsters. But that?s what Dominguez did on Old Fashioned. They chased Silver City, who shot to the early lead, with an opening half-mile in 46.07 ? which was more than 10 lengths faster than the average opening half-mile for the other two-turn races that day.

The pace would have been lively even on a fast surface, but on this uncommonly dull strip it was suicidal.

Old Fashioned moved by Silver City in the second turn, completing six furlongs in 1:11.67 (1:13.87 was the average split for the other races at the distance). And then in deep stretch, on the far outside, where neither Dominguez nor Old Fashioned could see him, Win Willy rallied for the victory.

"He ran a creditable race," Jones said about Old Fashioned. "The other horse just ran a great race. The fractions were just faster than you want. This was the first time Old Fashioned was tired after a race, but he came out of it fine, and we?ll move on to the Arkansas Derby as if nothing happened."

Well, almost. Thompson will have the mount in the Arkansas Derby. Thompson knows the colt "better than anybody," Jones said, explaining the decision.

In the mornings at Oaklawn, Thompson has been working Old Fashioned, and he rode the colt in his first two outings at Delaware Park.

Thompson also knows Oaklawn Park, where he?s the leading rider. And that familiarity, with both the horse and the track, could represent the start of an Old Fashioned solution.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Top 10 Triple Crown contenders 1. Quality Road: The Fountain of Youth winner is aimed at the Florida Derby.

2. I Want Revenge: Overwhelming in the Gotham, he?ll go to the Wood Memorial.

3. Old Fashioned: Better than his loss suggests, he?ll try to rebound in the Arkansas Derby.

4. Dunkirk: Lightly raced but enormously talented, he?s on course for a showdown in Florida.

5. Friesan Fire: The Louisiana Derby winner could run in the Blue Grass or wait for the Kentucky Derby.

6. Pioneerof The Nile: Trainer Bob Baffert has another contender; the Santa Anita Derby is next.

7. Imperial Council: He rallied in the Gotham, his first start around two turns.

8. Theregoesjojo: He defeated Quality Road in his first start of the year.

9. The Pamplemousse: The big speedster will take on Pioneerof The Nile at Santa Anita.

10. Beethoven: He rallied in the Fountain of Youth and could step forward in the Florida Derby.

It would be interesting to see how good Dunkirk would be if he didn't have to run around the outside of the race track and actually got a good trip for once.....

He was 8 wide in the first turn and then wide again on the far turn in his allowance win, and Saturday was tough again.....He spots them way too many lengths on a speed biased track, then Gomez has to wind him up with about 5/8 left. He made a great move, but it was earlier than it should have been and Quality Road was just too much when Velazquez asked him.

I was skeptical of Dunkirk prior to this race, but he earned by respect. I honestly think he's the best 3yo in the bunch, but he may not make the Derby with only $150K in graded earnings. And what a joke they give away a spot to an English horse who raced on polytrack against a sub par group at best.

I'm looking forward to see if I Want Revenge can duplicate his last effort in the Wood, and the Santa Anita Derby is shaping up to be a good one with Pioneer of theNile and The Pamplemousse.

Even though there is snow on the ground here  , spring is in the air! Keeneland opens this weekend and Woodbine opens locally on Saturday.

I'm finalizing my plans to be at Churchill with some buddies on the Thursday, Friday and first Saturday in May for the Derby. :toast:

According to their website, 32 days 19 hours 35 minutes to post time!!

Dunkirk looked really really good winning that Allowance at GP. Parked the entire race about Five wide, three wide, and won convincingly?.When Gomez asked him he hit another gear. When Gomez knows he is on the best horse, he knows what he can do.
In the Fountain of Youth,I thought Dunkirk followed a solid pace, he made the same move he did in his first two starts and took the lead turning for home, but Quality Road was just the better horse. Yeah, Quality Road was on the inside and Dunkirk wide, but Quality Road was also about 4 paths off the rail when they were together in the stretch.
After the race, Dunkirk looked a little spent, Quality Road looked pretty good?.it?s going to be very interesting how this plays out?..

Just my humble opinion?.

As for your trip to Churchill, you know that is every horseplayers dream. I've been to three Breeder's Cups, but never to the Derby....someday.... :SIB

Yeah, Axle....You have to experience it at least once....I've seen Barbaro and Big Brown win and can't wait to get back there. We just hang out in the paddock with the general admission crowd drinking Budweiser until we're brave enough to get into the mint juleps, but it's great. :SIB

Curses, It?s the Santa Anita Derby

Los Angeles, March 31, 2009--The worst thing that can happen to a trainer who wants to win the Kentucky Derby is to win the Santa Anita Derby, a month before. Pioneerof the Nile and The Pamplemousse, two of the finest 3-year-olds in the land, will be trying their hardest to win the $750,000 Santa Anita Derby on April 4, but that strategy is deeply flawed, Kentucky-wise. Both of these colts would be better off finishing second, or worse, if they want to have a prayer at Churchill Downs.

Now don't get me wrong, horses prepping for Louisville by running in the Santa Anita Derby have won the Kentucky Derby, 15 in all and most recently Giacomo in 2005. By running fourth, beaten by two lengths, at Santa Anita, Giacomo was perfectly positioned to win in Kentucky, though few horseplayers knew it and most of us let him get off at 50-1, second-longest price ever for a Derby winner. It was Jeff Mullins, the trainer of Buzzards Bay, who was really in trouble at Churchill. Some said that the No. 20 post in the Derby was what got Buzzards Bay beat, but that wasn't it at all; Mullins had committed the unpardonable sin of winning the Santa Anita Derby.

Last year, Colonel John was first at Santa Anita and sixth in Kentucky, as he became the 19th straight Santa Anita Derby winner to either not show up or not run fast enough at Churchill. Santa Anita may have added another wrinkle to the curse when it tore up the dirt track and installed a synthetic surface for the 2008 meet, but that argument, adjusting from Pro-Ride to old-fashioned loam at Churchill, didn't fit Colonel John. Not objecting to the dirt course at Saratoga, he won the Travers later in the year, reducing to moot the surface debate.

The last horse to register a Santa Anita Derby-Kentucky Derby double was Sunday Silence in 1989. The next year, Mister Frisky, the Santa Anita Derby winner, went to Kentucky with 16 straight wins, then finished eighth as the favorite. Of course, one failure does not a curse make, but this was an awfully foreboding start. Here, in living black and white, is the list since then:

Santa Anita Derby-Kentucky Derby double

Year Santa Anita
Derby Winner Kentucky
Derby Finish Kentucky Derby
Odds

1991 Dinard Didn't run
1992 A.P. Indy Scratched
1993 Personal Hope 4th 8-1
1994 Brocco 4th 4-1
1995 Larry the Legend Didn't run
1996 Cavonnier 2nd 5-1
1997 Free House 3rd 10-1
1998 Indian Charlie 3rd 5-2
1999 General Challenge 11th 9-2
2000 The Deputy 14th 9-2
2001 Point Given 5th 9-5
2002 Came Home 6th 8-1
2003 Buddy Gil 6th 7-1
2004 Castledale 14th 21-1
2005 Buzzards Bay 5th 40-1
2006 Brother Derek 4th 7-1
2007 Tiago 7th 14-1
2008 Colonel John 6th 9-2

All right, some of these Santa Anita Derby winners were cheese champions. Like Mister Frisky, some of them not only were beaten in Kentucky, but they also never won another race. Not to be confused with stiffdom, however, were A.P. Indy, who won Horse of the Year; Point Given, one of the wuda-cuda-shuda Triple Crown conversation pieces after his Preakness and Belmont wins; and Free House and General Challenge, who between them earned $6 million. A.P. Indy's absence from the Derby was an 11th-hour heartbreaker. His trainer, Neil Drysdale, scratched him the morning of the race when a hoof injury couldn't be repaired. The colt's owner, Tomonori Tsurumaki, was on a Kentucky-bound plane from Japan, and couldn't be re-routed in time.

Of the 16 Santa Anita Derby winners who made it to the gate at Churchill Downs, half of them were ridden by Gary Stevens. Now Stevens has won the Kentucky Derby three times, and only one of them, the filly Winning Colors, was pre-curse. She swept the Santa Anita and Kentucky races the year before Sunday Silence. Curse-wise, Stevens was in on a pass when he won the Kentucky Derby with Thunder Gulch, who didn't run in the Santa Anita Derby, and his other Kentucky winner, Silver Charm, barely dodged the hoodoo when he lost in a picture with Free House at Santa Anita. In fact, Free House beat Silver Charm twice that winter at Santa Anita, and went into the Kentucky Derby with a jinx that was on steroids.

Pioneerof the Nile, co-star of the 72nd Santa Anita Derby, is trained by Bob Baffert. Baffert, who's won the Santa Anita Derby four times, by now knows how it works. Cavonnier was inches short of Grindstone in Kentucky; previously unbeaten Indian Charlie, who didn't fire at Churchill, never ran again; General Challenge was the victim of a rough trip; and star-crossed Point Given was done in while in pursuit of suicidal early fractions. Baffert's finest two minutes in Kentucky came from Silver Charm and Real Quiet, after both were second at Santa Anita, and War Emblem, who changed hands, from Frank Springer's barn to Baffert's, so late in the game that the Santa Anita heebie-jeebies were behind him. All Baffert and his jockey, Garrett Gomez, can do with Pioneerof the Nile is shoot for the big money at Santa Anita, and then let the chips fall where they may in Kentucky. They seem like the right pair of horsemen to take on a curse, full bore.

Old Fashioned injured in Arkansas Derby

By Mary Rampellini

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Old Fashioned is out of the Kentucky Derby after emerging from his second-place finish in the Grade 2, $1 million Arkansas Derby on Saturday with a non-displaced slab fracture to his right knee, said his trainer, Larry Jones. The horse is scheduled to ship Monday to Lexington, Ky., where he could have surgery at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital.

"It's not life-threatening, it should be okay," Jones said. "Career-ending is a possibility just because of the type of horse he is. But we'll see. We'll let them make that call."

Old Fashioned set a quick pace in the Arkansas Derby and fought on through the lane to finish a half-length behind winner Papa Clem.

"He was coming back on the end," Jones said. "I'm awful proud of him."

Earlier this year, Old Fashioned was the future book favorite for the Kentucky Derby following a 2-year-old season in which he won the Grade 2 Remsen at Aqueduct then took the Grade 3, $250,000 Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn in his first start of the year in February.

Old Fashioned was the even-money favorite in the Arkansas Derby following a runner-up finish to 56-1 shot Win Willy in the Grade 2 Rebel. Old Fashioned races for Rick Porter.

thanks you guys for all the posts. Love to follow the ponies but I have been thankfully busy at work. Missed most of the prep races this year and am beyond in my study time for the derby. You have helped me to catch up a little bit.

Thanks again.

so far I think I am leaning towards

Friesan Fire, General Quarters, and finally Quality Road.

These three to me look like they will get some good odds. I think I Want Revenge should be the favorite.

What do you guys think?

I think I have a bit of a crush on Dunkirk, and that's probably not a good thing....

I understand that no horse since Appolo in 1882 has won the Derby without racing at 2, but I think this horse has gotten A LOT of experience out of his three starts, and I love the move he made in the Florida Derby.

The other one I really like is Pioneerof the Nile. It will be interesting to see how much play he gets at the windows closer to post time, but he hasn't been getting much respect lately, even though he has won 4 graded events. Check out his company lines in the Lewis - he beat Papa Clem and I Want Revenge, the latter the probable post time favourite come Derby Day, and the former beat a stubborn Old Fashioned in the Arkansas Derby.

But when asked my "Derby horse", it's gotta be Dunkirk. Pletcher just might get the monkey off his back this year.

It will also be interesting to see which horse Gomez picks, as he has the regular mounts on both Dunkirk and Pioneer.

I can't wait to get down there....:00hour

Derby Favorites Carry Jockeys and Baggage

By JOE DRAPE

Published: April 13, 2009

California?s strongest Kentucky Derby contender, Pioneerof the Nile, has never run on dirt, and there is suspicion that he does not like the surface. Florida?s finest, Quality Road, has a quarter crack in his right hind hoof, and Triple Crown races are no place for tender feet. New York?s best, I Want Revenge, has not beaten anyone of note, having come east from California because he was only the fourth- or fifth-best horse on the West Coast.

These three accomplished but flawed colts will probably be the betting favorites for the 135th running of the Kentucky Derby on May 2. So what is a horseplayer to do for the next three weeks? Look deeper at the field of 20 for an overlooked horse and a big score.

Let?s take a closer look at the holes in the r?sum?s of the top three. Bob Baffert trains Pioneerof the Nile and has not sounded this confident about the Derby chances of one of his horses since he took War Emblem to Churchill Downs and won the 2002 Kentucky Derby.

?I really feel like I have a legitimate Derby horse,? he said of his colt, a son of Empire Maker.

Who can doubt the trainer of three Derby winners, especially because Pioneerof the Nile has won four races in a row, most recently the Santa Anita Derby, since arriving in Baffert?s barn in November? What is troubling is that the colt ended up in California apparently to take advantage of the synthetic surfaces there.

His previous trainer, the Hall of Famer Bill Mott, raced him as a 2-year-old on turf at Saratoga, where Pioneerof the Nile won once. He had the feeling that Pioneerof the Nile was not at his best on dirt. Mott next tried him on the synthetic surfaces, most notably at the Grade I Breeders? Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita Park, where he encountered traffic problems but still finished only two and three-quarters lengths behind the winner.

The colt?s owner, Ahmet Zayat, has had horses with Mott and Baffert, and his decision to leave Pioneerof the Nile in California has certainly yielded results. Last year, however, Colonel John went to the Derby as the best of the West and was sent off as the second choice, but he spun his wheels in his dirt debut and finished sixth.

Quality Road looked like a special horse March 28 when he glided to victory by a length and three-quarters in the Florida Derby. He is lightly raced, winning three of his four races.

When Quality Road, a son of Elusive Quality, came up with a quarter crack ? a split in the hoof wall ? there was considerable concern. Quality Road?s trainer, Jimmy Jerkens, noticed it in the winner?s circle at Gulfstream Park. He has had the hoof patched, and Quality Road seems to be healing well. On Friday, he worked a half-mile at Belmont.

?With a big race coming up, this gives us something to go by,? Jerkens said. ?You just can?t keep guessing or kidding yourself, ?Oh, he?s all right, he?s all right.? Everyone says he?s dead fit. Sure, he?s dead fit, but you want to see it with your own eyes.?

Still, Jerkens remains concerned. ?Quarter cracks can always resurface,? he said.

Yes, they do, and among the worst places for them to occur is when running against 19 other horses in America?s greatest horse race.

Finally, there is I Want Revenge, a winner of the Gotham and of the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct. He came east after winning just once in six races in California. His trainer, Jeff Mullins, said the colt did not like the synthetic surface and needed dirt.

The suspicion here, however, is that I Want Revenge came to New York to beat inferior horses. Only West Side Bernie from the Gotham or Wood fields has enough graded stakes earnings to qualify for the Kentucky Derby. In seven starts, West Side Bernie has won only twice, and not since last September.

Is I Want Revenge, a colt with three victories against eight starts, worthy of being the Derby favorite, or even a second or third choice? That?s unlikely.

So, if not these three colts, who?

There is the Florida Derby runner-up, Dunkirk, who will take more money than he deserves after showing flashes of brilliance in his three-race career. Friesan Fire has won all three of his races this year and has been working nicely since capturing the Louisiana Derby on March 14.

How about the Illinois Derby winner, Musket Man, whose only loss in six starts was to General Quarters, the victor in the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland on Saturday? Or the Arkansas Derby winner, Papa Clem, who finished a half-length behind Pioneerof the Nile and a length ahead of I Want Revenge in the Robert B. Lewis Stakes in February.

We do not have to make our picks now. But pay attention over the next three weeks because the winner of the 135th running of the Kentucky Derby will go off at double-digit odds.

A version of this article appeared in print on April 14, 2009, on page B15 of the New York edition.

Pioneerof the Nile Busts Bullet Workout

By Blood-Horse Staff

Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) winner Pioneerof the Nile had his final workout at Santa Anita on a blustery but sun-drenched morning April 15, busting four furlongs on the Pro-Ride racing surface in a bullet :46 1/5, the fastest of 39 drills at the distance.

The son of Empire Maker departs for Churchill Downs on April 16 to prepare for the 135th Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) on May 2.

Pioneerof the Nile, winner of the Robert B. Lewis Stakes (gr. II) and the San Felipe Stakes (gr. II) at Santa Anita this season in addition to his one-length victory in the Santa Anita Derby, was ridden during the drill by former jockey Joe Steiner.

Trainer Bob Baffert said Pioneerof the Nile ran out five furlongs in :58 4/5.

"He did it pretty damn easy," Baffert said. "I didn?t think he went that fast. He went really, really nice. It?s probably the best he?s ever worked. The track was in really great shape today. It had a lot of bounce to it and they were getting over it good.?

Baffert still had no commitment from Garrett Gomez on Pioneerof the Nile for the Derby. The nation?s Eclipse Award winner as outstanding jockey the last two years also is the rider of Florida Derby (gr. I) runner-up Dunkirk for Todd Pletcher.

?Well, it?s either Garrett Gomez or somebody from Los Alamitos,? Baffert joked when asked about the rider for Pioneerof the Nile in the Derby. ?I don?t know yet. I?m still waiting.?

Owned by Zayat Stables, the dark bay has won five of eight career races and $1,234,200.

In other Southern California Derby news, potential starter Mr. Hot Stuff, third in the Santa Anita Derby, worked four furlongs on Pro-Ride Tuesday in :48 flat.

Trainer Eoin Harty still holds hope that the son of Tiznow , a full brother to Colonel John, can qualify for the Derby. He ranks 21st on the current list of graded stakes earners with $114,000.

?I?m training him like he?s going to the Derby right now,? Harty said. Corey Nakatani would ride.

Hold Me Back

Hold Me Back

Hold Me Back is now 20 to 1 on my sports web site. I do not know if I can say the site because it is not with this but I think that is crazy. This horse finished second in the blue grass. Hold Me back had a tough race all the way around. With Giant Causeway in the bloodline he has got a shot. Finished strong when he got room in the BlueGrass. I think Bill Mott will have this horse ready.
