I've been researching travel on the cheap and came across Thailand. Has anyone ever visited? What was your experience?
[h=2]Thailand- 30 Nights in a 5 stars hotel ? $900-$1000[/h] thailand.jpg
In Bangkok you could spend one month in a 5 star hotel for $900 ? $1000. That includes accommodation for two people in a luxurious 5 star hotel room or studio/apartment. The equivalent New York City would cost a anywhere from $7000 to $20 000.
Thailand is considered one of the poorest countries in the world with an average monthly wage of approximately $490. So to live in a premium hotel for one month, excluding any other living costs including food, bills and healthcare, a local worker would need to spend two months? salary. Whilst the economy and conditions of life are very poor, Thailand attracts many tourists ? especially because it offers accommodation at such an attractive price.

It's not quite that cheap plus it costs nearly $2K to get there.

It's certainly a haven for a certain subset of the population but one I wouldn't want to associate with.

Wow. That's a very ignorant stereotypical response to say about an entire country's population.

I'm actually surprised at the response having met you.

Pretty sure he's talking about the mongers who go there strictly to party and take advantage of the legal activities that are available there.

Lots of things to do and places to see. I wouldn't be able to stand the flight unless I went in super first class and that's like $20K I believe.

Greetings,

I was in Thailand last year for six weeks. Did the whole south Asian circuit. Recommend it to anyone. Heaven/paradise for man. Anyways check out this site http://www.travelfish.org/. Also, there are so many backpacker hostels for all budgets, Thailand has so much to offer, definitely hit one of the islands up. This is a good site for hostels as well

wild, i have been researching this country for 6 months at a time....would have to come home for 14 days every 6 months to keep my health coverage.

this apt is $28 cdn per night

This new apartment is located between the centers of Kata and Karon and close to the beach. The apartments and the condo offers amazing sea views. All is at walking distance : bars, restaurants, shops, supermarkets, atm, etc...

I've been there a few times in the 90s. It certainly has many places that young single guys can get into trouble and do and see things that aren't even talked about in the US.
there is also some gorgeous beaches and wonderful cuisine. Great place to go to relax and get away from everything and just enjoy yourself and feel like a king.

It all depends what you're interested in and what you're looking for. If you're open to experiencing a different culture and a different way of life in a developing country, then you'll have a great time. However, if you're looking to just relax at a 5-star hotel at a resort, although they do have amazing places like that (Krabi for one), perhaps Thailand wouldn't be the best option. Remember, you lose a day to a day and a half traveling (each way) - not to mention the cost of flying.

I was in Bangkok for 10 days in Oct. and had an awesome time mostly hanging with the locals and some ex-pats. Torrential rainstorms, 95 degrees Fahrenheit or more each day, pad thai, street skewers, tattoos, tigers and elephants....it was fabulous!

Peace! :)

My mom has been there 2 times in the last year. She LOVED it!! She wants to go back again. The first time was a business trip and the second time she took my step dad. Surprisingly he had a really good time too.

I went to Thailand for Christmas 2010 for 17 days. My wife and I went all over the country. We had a guide that chauffeured us around. It was supposed to be a safari type trip where we went on a lot of hikes to see endangered animals. We soon discovered that the Thais eat most of there animals, protect none of them and there aren't many left. For 3 days we stayed in a floating 10x10 hut made of bamboo. It was quite the experience. When I had to piss at night I pulled up the bamboo window because I was too freaking scared I would walk off the walkway. The walkway wasn't lit and had no rails. The floor sank a foot with every step I took and I was just waiting to fall through it. On 3 of the hikes I got bloodsuckers all over my feet. The bloodsuckers live in dry dirt in Thailand so you can encounter them in many places. Saw some sights in Bangkok but we weren't overly thrilled seeing temples and a reclining Buddha. The massages are good and are incredibly cheap, maybe $8 an hour or so. The food is good and the food and drinks are very cheap. However, I don't know how we would have made it without a guide as nobody there speaks English. My wife booked us a room sleeping 200 feet up in a tree without telling me for one part of the trip. The only way to get to your room was by zip line. Fuck that, when I found out I changed the reservations. The flight was 24 hours long and it took me 3 days to get used to the time difference. We spent a lot on this trip and frankly, I was pretty disappointed with it. If you are two single guys going, you will for sure have a much different experience than we did as I'm sure you'll be experiencing the nightlife in Bangkok. Save some money and come party down here at Jaco beach and experience hotel Cocal instead!

On a side not, some of my buddies took a guy's trip to Bangkok a couple of years ago. My buddy Brian picked up a girl in a bar and took her to his room. According to Brian, he started sucking on her tits (only) then stopped to use the bathroom. He came out and found the girl had stolen his laptop and took off. He went to the police and described the girl and made a police report. The cops said of, yeah, I know that guy, we have a problem with him all the time. Oops on Brian, he had mistakenly got a little action from a ladyboy. LOL
