- - I love themes . . . Now we get our first read on whether these golf "playoffs" can generate any of the momentum that is so talked about in other sports (and is certainly an important aspect of match play in golf, but that's one week and one venue).

My first inclination after a big event is that the principals involved in most of the grind (with exceptions worth playing), especially from in front, have their work cut out to be standing tall at the end of a significant event the following week. But gaining momentum that plays itself out over the course of 4 weeks will get a unique proving ground in the coming days.

My "momentum" play is straightforward: Geoff Ogilvy. His record demonstrates a real ability to sustain his very best form, which might be coming into view after he's been out on the fringes, at best, through the heart of the season. I heard him in a post-Barclays interview say he was rested after the PGA, and now really pleased to have done well on a course that had gotten the better of him in the past, and looking forward to the Deutsche Bank on a course he remembers playing well on . . . As an Ogilvyaholic, it's a choice that was easy for me to make.

A few others in mind that are not derived from any momentum angle.

GLENEAGLES, Scotland (AP) - Ernie Els withdrew from the Deutsche Bank Championship on Tuesday for family reasons.

The fourth-ranked South African is returning to his home near London where his children will be preparing for their return to school, Els said in a statement released by his management company, ISM.
Els plans to return next week for the third event of the FedEx Cup in Illinois and will remain in the United States for the PGA Tour Championship in Atlanta the following week.

"I have been on the road now for almost eight weeks and it is important that I return home where my children will be preparing for their return to school," Els said. "I regret having to miss such a prestigious and important tournament and I wish everybody there an enjoyable and successful week."

Els finished fourth Sunday in the first of the four FedEx Cup events, the Barclays Classic in New York.

There are 120 men teeing it up this week in Boston, but, really, there's only one. All eyes this weekend will be on Tiger Woods, who brazenly skipped the opening event of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. The guess here is that Tiger isn't exactly quaking in his Nikes over the near 5,000 point deficit he now faces in the race for $10 million large in three weeks; not as the defending Deutsche Bank champ who also boasts five top-two finishes in the last nine years at the BMW Championship and four more top-two results at the season-ending TOUR Championship. 119 others will give it all they've got, but the FedEx Cup remains Tiger's for the hoisting in three weeks, assuming his daughter is sleeping well enough to allow him a good night's sleep.

The Favorites
Raise your hand if you predicted that Steve Stricker, K.J. Choi, and Rory Sabbatini would be the two biggest challengers to Tiger this year. Stricker is coming off an emotional win last week at The Barclays that has him atop the playoff standings and could continue his solid play at TPC Boston, where he tied for seventh a year ago. Choi has been on a roll since June. In his last seven events, he has two wins, a runner-up, and has just one finish of worse than T12. His track record at the Deutsche Bank is nothing special, but it's tough to bet against him at this point. Sabbatini has had his ups and downs this year, but he's currently in an upswing with two top-three finishes in his last three events. That makes a whopping six top-three finishes this year, which means he's a force to be reckoned with in spite of the fact he's never teed it up at TPC Boston. Vijay Singh dropped all the way to No. 6 in the standings after missing the cut last week, so it's tough to know what to make of the fact that he has never finished worse than fourth place at this event in three tries. Fantasy owners should be inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt that he can bounce back in Boston after missing the cut in each of his last two PGA TOUR events.

The Best of the Rest
Adam Scott won the inaugural Deutsche Bank in 2003 and was the runner-up a year later. After finishes of T12 at the PGA Championship and T14 at The Barclays, he seems to have found the form that deserted him in June and July, so consider him dangerous. Like Scott, Geoff Ogilvy is back on the horse after two straight top-six finishes. He tied for fifth at this event in 2003, missed the cut the following year and hasn't played since, but has enough momentum to make some noise. Phil Mickelson silenced some of his critics with a T7 last week, but he'll have to overcome the fact that he's never played in this event to be a factor. Jim Furyk is slowly fading, though a T25 finish last week at The Barclays is an encouraging sign that he's getting over his injury woes. Ernie Els would have been considered one of the favorites this week if not for the fact that he backed out due to family reasons and won't be teeing it up in Boston.

Who's Hot?
Ian Poulter: The Pink Panter doesn't venture to the U.S. often, but he tends to make it count when he does. He's currently riding a streak of five straight cuts made in PGA TOUR events, including three majors, one WGC event, and a T9 last week at The Barclays that vaulted him 18 spots to No. 59 on the FedEx Cup points list.

Who's Not?
Vijay Singh: After two straight missed cuts and three awful showings in August, VJ is all the way down to No. 6 in the FedEx Cup standings.

Troy Matteson: After two third-place finishes in a three-week span in July, it looked like Matteson would go on another late-season run. In six events since the John Deere Classic, however, Matteson hasn't finished better than T48.

Robert Allenby: Once a shoe-in for the Top 30 and a trip to Atlanta at the end of the season, Allenby continues to plummet down the points list. With three missed cuts and an 81st-place showing in his last four PGA TOUR events, Bob now finds himself at No. 30 and dropping.

Player Trends
It's not a fool-proof indicator of future success, but golfers who fare well at a particular venue tend to do so time and again. With that in mind, we provide a list of players who have notable trends at this week's event (most recent results are listed first).

The Good
Charles Howell III (T18, T4, T9)
Vijay Singh (2, Win, 4)
Justin Rose (T4, T27, T29, 3)
Tiger Woods (Win, T40, T2, T7)
Carl Pettersson (Cut, T4, T11)

The Bad
Trevor Immelman (T52, T55)
Tom Pernice Jr. (Cut, T60, Cut, T32)
Heath Slocum (T44, Cut, Cut, T60)
Jason Gore (T76, T60, Cut)
Jose Coceres (T36, Cut, Cut, Cut)

The Ugly
Brett Quigley (Cut, Cut, Cut, Cut)

2006 Recap
Tiger Woods erased a three-stroke deficit with an eagle two holes into his final round, pulled ahead with a birdie three holes later, and eventually ran away from Vijay Singh with a Labor Day 63 that gave him his fifth consecutive PGA TOUR victory. Singh had fired a scorching 61 in round three, but couldn't keep the momentum going on a windy final day. Tiger avenged a loss to Singh at the same event two years earlier, a victory that, at the time, ended Woods' five-year reign as the world's No. 1 ranked player.

2005 Recap
Olin Browne entered the week ranked 119th on the money list but emerged with his first victory in six years thanks to a final-round 67. Browne shared the 54-hole lead with four other players, but all except runner-up Jason Bohn, who finished one shot back, failed to break par in the final round. Vaughn Taylor finished in third place at 10-under-par. Tiger Woods, whose charity is the main beneficiary of the tournament, did not break par in the final three rounds and ended up tied for 40th.

The Course
The par-71 TPC of Boston is the only venue on the PGA TOUR that plays host to a tournament with a Friday start and a Monday finish, because of Labor Day. At more than 7,400 yards, the course requires players to use driver off the tee more times than not, and majority of the holes are lined by tall pine trees. Though there isn't a whole lot of water in play, the course features five par fours of at least 460 yards, so long hitters certainly have a distinct advantage.

The Field
It wouldn't do fantasy golfers much good to play their top draft pick when he doesn't plan on teeing it up, which is why fantasy owners have to be very cognizant of who is playing each week. As a courtesy, we've provided this link to the official field as provided by PGATOUR.com.

Note: It's a good idea to check this list for the official field of players again on Wednesday, as it is not unusual for golfers to drop out of tournaments in the days leading up the first round.

Back woes are back
He is trying to remain encouraged, but David Toms has issues with his back -- again. He sat out nearly two months last summer, and those two bad disks are acting up again. He was walking gingerly as he practice-putted and he hopes treatments will have him ready to go by Friday's first round. "I haven't had a problem all year," said Toms. "Talk about your bad timing." He missed just his second cut of the season at the Barclays and fell to 27th in the FedEx Cup standings.
