WALT DISNEY WORLD, Fla. - The search for a boy who deputies say was dragged by an alligator into the water at the Grand Floridian Resort & Spa at Walt Disney World continues.

The incident happened around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday in a sandy waterfront area outside the hotel near the Seven Seas Lagoon on hotel property.

The 2-year-old boy was on vacation with his family from Nebraska and arrived at the resort Sunday, the Orange County Sheriff's Office said.

Witnesses said the family was on the beach and the boy's 4-year-old sister was in a playpen about 20 to 30 yards from the water on the sand, according to Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings. The toddler was wading in the water nearby.

"The father actually went into the water to wrestle his son from the grips of the alligator," Demings said.

Officials asid the father suffered minor scratches on his hand, but was unsuccessful in getting his son back. Demings said the boy's mother also went into the water, trying to find her child.

Jeff Williamson with Orange County Sheriff's Office said at a Wednesday morning news conference that the search for the boy is still a search and recovery mission and that they are holding out for the best outcome.

"I don't think we've had a child this young involved in an attack," Williamson said. More than a dozen boats, three with sonar, along with a helicopter and a dive team will continue to search for the boy.

"It is tragic. It is heartbreaking. You know how a father must have felt. I cannot come to grips to what it must have been like," Williamson said.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials said it removed four alligators from the lake to euthanize and analyze them, but none was believed to be the gator involved in the attack.

The alligator that grabbed the boy was described as 4 to 7 feet in length.

?We have not had any recent reports or complaints of nuisance gators in the area,? Demings said.
There are "No Swimming" signs at the lagoon, and no one else was in the water at the time of the attack besides the child, Demings said.

This body of water is not for recreational swimming, "likely for that very reason," Demings said. "This is Florida and it's not uncommon for alligators to be in bodies of water."

Nick Wiley from FWC said that it's not clear if the boy was swimming and that all officers know is the boy was on the edge of the water.

"I would tell guests this is an extremely rare occurrence, but you still have to be careful," Wiley said, adding that daylight will help the search.

"The sad reality of it is it's been several hours and we're not likely going to recover a live body," Demings said, adding, ?We?re not leaving until we recover the child."

?Everyone here at the Walt Disney World Resort is devastated by this tragic accident. Our thoughts are with the family. We are helping the family and doing everything we can to assist law enforcement,? said Jacquee Wahler, vice president of Walt Disney World Resort.

The FWC is investigating the case with the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

?Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time,? FWC officer Chad Weber said.

My daughter works at the Grand Floridian...was not on last night....but was called in today and working with the family and their 4 yd old...what a terrible accident...prayers are thoughts with the Nebraska family..talked to my daughter just now...they are from Nebraska not Wisconsin...Orlando hit with 3 major incidents...the shooting of the singer, the nightclub killing 50 and the incident at Disney.....when we were at Disney a few months ago at the Wilderness my granddaughter walked over to the waters edge...my daughter grabbed her and yelled...we all thought she was kinda over reacting by yelling...but she reminded us tonight of that incident....there are signs saying " no swimming " and under the signs its says " gator activity"... in that lagoon there are gators...even though its a man made lake...

Damn shame. Remember going to florida as a kid visiting my grandma in St. Augustine and went to DW once. I remember being told to stay away from creeks, lakes and such.

I heard on CBS This Morning that the family is going to sue Disney and will probably win easily. The lawyer they had on to talk about the validity of the case said it's an easy win. WTF? How is this Disney's fault? It's a fucking wild alligator that came by and snatched the kid, not Al E Gator, the beloved attraction. Shit happens and this was a horrific tragedy, but it isn't Disney's fault. This shit has to stop.

You guys don't have all the information. There have been repeated instances in which Gators had either chased or approached guests at the Disney Resort. These incidences were reported to Disney. Disney was negligent in removing the Gators and they did not provide appropriate signage. Even though there was signage on the property, it was not noticeable enough to warn guests. Being a resort Disney has a responsibility to keep guests safe. The attorney is 100% correct. It's an easy win.

It is Disney's fault.

I have been that resort many times when my children were younger. It's the last thing that would cross my mind when I was walking along that man made lagoon with my kids.

Disney will write a blank check, I don't think that will make a difference to the parents.

All the money in the world will not bring that child back again.

Tragic story all around.

It's not Disney's fault that a wild alligator snatched a kid! If an eagle snatches a kid off your lawn, is it your fault? Let's say that the eagle had been hanging around on your roof for weeks. Is it your fault? Fuck no.

You guys are out of your fucking minds.

"and they did not provide appropriate signage. Even though there was signage on the property, it was not noticeable enough to warn guests."

Not noticeable? Define that! WTF is going on. Better put up signs in Oklahoma, "Beware twisters".

I'll explain.

This small body of water is man-made. It was made by Disney. It is on Disney property. Disney hotels surround the body of water.

It sounds like you weren't aware of that.

Disney knew Alligators had found their way into the lagoon. People were chased by alligators and Disney knew it and did nothing, thus a little boy was eaten.

If you build a family attraction, charge money to come to the resort and you fail to protect, properly warn or adequately notify people of a potential danger, you are negligent. Period.

I love all Disney, but they had a movie night right there. There's pretty beach chairs all along the water ways there. They get rid of mosquitos , I just figured that gators weren't a problem.

It was a tragic accident, that's all it was. They had watch for alligator signs. disney is not at fault, imo.

No. They didn't have watch for alligator signs.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion. It's more interesting when those opinions are informed.

That body of water is absolutely massive. They did have signs that warn people of alligators but it is not efficient and spread out enough to warn people across the entire body of water. If you haven't been there, you have no idea.
