What is wrong with the owner paying the servers a regular wage? They can up the prices on the menu, and it will be all good.

Absolutely nothing is wrong with it. I wouldnt mind it at all. But its not happening. And me stiffing a college kid or mom whos working extra money to support her kid isnt gonna make it happen. Im all for it if that ever becomes the norm but i dont think anything is accomplished or any point is proven by not tipping in the meantime.

I agree with YYZ. Just build the tips into the cost of the food/drinks and don't leave it to the customers. Many countries in Europe and Asia don't tip - what you see is what you pay; no more, no less. Now if the vendors in these foreign countries know you're American, they'll expect a tip since they know it's our custom and they can/will gouge (happened to me in Italy).

Now the tax implications could be the reason. Many servers just pocket the cash at the end of the night, whereas if it's given to them via wages in a check, Uncle Sam takes his piece.

Many restaurants now charge an automatic 3% to your bill to cover the healthcare costs of their worker and it's written at the bottom of the bill - and the customers don't even have a choice in that!

No one is asking you to stiff anyone. But I don't think you need to tip, "Just because it is expected", either.

Remember what the point of tipping is in the first place.

We disagree 100 percent on this but its cool. Everyone is different. I just know that most of these waiters and waitresses make $2.00 an hour. Before you say get a better job most cant and need the flexible hours. So yeah. I dont have too and Im sure they get stiffed a lot. Im by no means rich but if i can help someones day and life well i guess i will if I get even the most basic of service. Different strokes for different folks.

As for mosr servers hiding the tips I certainly don't have a clue but don't 90 percent of people pay with debit cards. Outside of cardrooms and casinos i dont know anyone who uses cash on a day to day basis.

I doubt these servers get stiffed "a lot". Most people tip, because that's just how it's done. And although I wouldn't ever say they need to get a better job, I won't be so naive as to think they make $2.00 an hour. When those tips are added in, they do quite well in most cases.

There is a good reason why many waitresses make careers out of it.
