I have the invisible fence and they learn very quickly not to go past the boundary. It's a very mild shock (it's adjustable) but they get a beeping sound when they got near the boundary. I think 3' away they get the beeps and they do an about face if they ever hear that. They don't even wear the collars anymore. They know.

I should get one of these to put around my paperwork so my wife doesn't try and help by "straighten things up"......:0003

Yep same as a "shock" collar. Can't imagine the number dogs that have been saved from roadkill because of those fences:0008

Well thanks for the responses. It was kinda silly for my 79 year parents to get a rescue dog like it but will see. My Dad got some prescription Doggy Downers, lol.

My niece had a huge mastiff/bulldog cross, great personality and folks loved the creature, which loved chasing any small animal and all large trucks. The pound told her the dog leaped thru huge picture window to chase down a truck, and previous owners decided that's it, back to the pound!

My niece decided to take on the project. I told her would take hours every day of working that positive re-enforcement, using the numerous cats we had about the house for the training. And would take months. Hours a day for months. If you want to be humane...or shock collar, or just smack the dog hard as you can across the face several times, with an open hand, and training be done in a week.

Dog was so powerful and strong, she couldn't safely walk it, and of course opted for the humane training - you guessed it, dog had to be returned to the pound...

Here is the beast getting ready to steal a buttermilk pancake....it once ate, in blink of an eye, 2 whole pounds of sausages frying in big pan. I figured the abundance of super hot oil would slow it down, but nope...

So do you feel the same about the underground fences you do "Shock" collars?

I'm against any training that involves pain for the dog. You got a dog to care for it, not to just bend it to your will no matter what. The dog really just want to please you, sometimes he doesn't know how. If that means you need to be "inconvenienced" by putting the dog on a leash or putting up a real fence, I'm sorry, that's what you signed up for, to care for the dog.

If you don't want those inconveniences then don't get a dog, no problem.

The dog can be trained without being shocked or otherwise hurt. I know, I've done it multiple times. Would it have been quicker to beat them into submission each time they got out of line, maybe. I prefer not doing that, though.

Thanks, seemed like a yes/no type of question to me as well. I will put PF in the yes section as well though as it seems that's what he was getting to. Seems curious given the number of lives they save. Have never owned either, but am not against them. Of course I bust my kids asses when they need it as well, so I am a bad parent too. :0008

I wouldn't go that far, though I never hit my kids either. Your kids at least (I'm assuming) speak the same language as you so they are choosing to disobey you. A dog doesn't get that luxury.

Your opinions on this subject are WAY beyond what was asked. NEVER doubt Clint on animal behavior/mistreatment when you are sleeping on a couch with your wife. He never said above words nor did anyone. A lot of my neighbors have this fencing system and it works, not a "beating" whatsoever. Your wife seems to be giving you a shock collar and it worked to get you to understand. None of us here know the whole story but have to trust your "side" of things.
