it's called phase2 hashing. The screen keeps freezing so illegal subscribers can't really watch any programs. Do you pay for your direct tv? Dtv is attempting to crack down on illegal decoding of channels, and in an attempt to do so legal subcribers can also become affected as you were last night. It shouldn't continue very long.

From what I've read this hashing started about 7PM EST yesterday. There is some new code in the data stream which determines if H cards are accepting updates and whether or not it is a BS card. If your card does not accept updates or if it's a BS card, then your video is being hashed. This apparently effects BS cards in bootloaders as well.

DAVE wants to make sure everyone with an H card is accepting updates. I wonder why?

I'm only guessing here but this is what I think. DAVE started a mean campaign a couple of months back to make their company profitable. It is estimated that 11 million are stealing DTV signal. I read somewhere that DSS lost $400 Million last year. That's one hell of a lot of cash. However, if they could get half of the estimated signal stealers on their basic plan that would bring around $2.1 Billion per year. Very big numbers, very big stakes, a lot of very high-priced engineers and lawyers hard at work.

So they start by going after the HU cards. They continued this campaign until the current point which is that you must have a valid subscribed card (or a copy of one) in order to get video. Sooner or later these cloned cards are going to get killed. Apparently DAVE can tell if you have a cloned card, I don't know how that works.

At the same time DAVE has been cracking down on US and Canadian dealers who sell hardware to steal their signal. When they bust these folks they also confiscate their customer records and some people have received letters from the FBI. Really. Also, there are fewer and fewer places where you can buy a new receiver with a card without purchasing a one year contract. So now DAVE has taken control of the distribution channel.

That leaves H cards. As of yesterday any H card that would not accept updates and all BS cards are being hashed. So people will have to allow updates to their cards and I surmise that when DAVE thinks the time is right they will get hit just like Black Sunday. The only option is to run emulation.

And sooner or later DAVE will find a way to kill emulation as well. Free TV is becoming more and more rare.

That's just my opinion. DAVE doesn't call me and tell me what is up his sleeve.

Marseilles, France,
Where are you getting all this info from Skinar. are you sure the crooks are always one step ahead of the companies, so i heard the signal will always be stolen from DTV and there's nothing they can do to keep up with the hackers.

The info is found through research, chat, irc. The hackers are good but so is DAVE. DAVE has a lot more money and has been very proactive lately. I'm just expressing my opinion, I have no idea what the hackers may be able to produce. Generally speaking though, someone seems to be able to figure out a way to pick a lock regardless of how good the lock may be. It's just that it may take quite a bit of time.

Dave can't change technology. DTV's channels are based on a binary digit system. Each packet has to be a 1 or a 0. Ex a 10 digit packet could be 1011001001 Dave is using packet's that are longer thus making it harder to debug. DTV can't change binary technology, so some one will always come up with a fix.

Mr Bains,

At the risk of being rude, I'm afraid your argument makes no sense. The fact that the DTV signal is digital has little to do with whether or not that signal can be intercepted and decoded. As an example I will offer the 256bit encryption keys commonly used in RSA schemes. They are nothing but strings of 1's and 0's as you say, yet no one has yet been able to intercept and decode one of those encrypted messages. It was estimated by some experts that the most powerful computer on earth could crack the code by trying all possible combinations - however, the mean time to a solution was something like 5 million years.

I think that someone will probably be able to unlock whatever DTV decides to send down, but that ability is unrelated to the digital nature of the signal (in my opinion).

IMO Bains is right. I had a digital class this semester...and both cable TV and satellite TV are in digital format...there is no possibility that it can be in Analog because it would be slowwwwwwwwwww and it wouldnt work. 1s and 0s are digital...and there are alot of them!

The H cards were hashed on Tuesday. MJ, the only thing I know to tell u is emulation is the way to go. Up and running since February with no hits. They can't touch an emulation system.

I'm running an emulator and am experiencing the exact same symptoms as MJ.
SixFive, I was also under the impression that emultion systems are untouchable. Does anyone have any insite as to why emulators are being affected now?

Thanks

Juice - is your card a BS card? Which emulation program are you running? Which version?

Skinar, I don't know what you mean by BS card or which version of the emu program I am running (sorry not much help).
All I know is that I have a fifth gen receiver.
Have you heard of other emu's going down, or might this just be a bad connection on my end somewhere?

Thanks

Shitar you first come here saying this discussion is illegal and we shouldn't be discussing it online, and now all of a sudden your like an expert trying to give advice.

What's your agenda? Do you work for Dave? Do yourself a favour and stay out of these conversations and stop trying to rip me and Hellah, he's trying to be helpful, your attitude is not necessary. Go back to your computer or video games or your chess club and leave us alone.
