Maybe it's something I don't know since I haven't used Ebay a whole lot but why the hell don't people just set their reserve price as the starting bid? If you won't sell something for 20k because it's below your reserve then why the hell waste time. Just set it at your reserve and go from there.

from what i gather, a lower initial offering (starting price) is set low in hopes to draw attention to, entice would be bidders. the more bidders the more bids, that hopefully would push item price past reserve?

though i too get frustrated by this same thing

Yep. This has been the format since the inception of auctions.
