Hey bro,
The little box is a rheostat switch or a double pole/throw circuit switch and will function with a ground and a power source. The reason you are seeing a third blue wire is for attachments as that is probably a generic rheostat switch that is used on ceiling fans as well. If the rheostat box is attached to the lamp then the blue wire will attach to one of the lights, probably in the stem.
Here's the deal, old rotary rheostats are awesome and many use mercury switches but are considered outdated because of the mercury switches and replacement parts are usually a double throw, negating the need for the rotary switch.
If you want take a picture of it and post it and I can tell you how to wire fairly easily. I am guessing that the blue wire will simply be attached to the bright setting light which should have a wire connection in the light pole stem.
Hope that helps,
FDC
my man.... ...heres what i have...
this is the switch that i`m pretty sure i need...http://www.bplampsupply.com/product/1888 ....used the part number and it shows this switch with 3 leads...
heres the breakdown on the lamp`s wiring...
1 line (from the power cord) is spliced to a red wire that was attached to one end of the rheostat/switch(it`s all one part)....
the second line(from the power cord) is spliced to 2 black wires that go to the respective sockets...
coming back from each socket is a black wire(again, one from each socket..and yes,i am a redundant m.f.`er)...they are spliced together with a 3rd small black wire that leads to the other side of the rheostat/switch...
those are the two wires that were connected to the rheostat/switch....as you can see in the diagram of the replacement switch, there are black/red and blue wires.....
here is where i get sand in my jockstrap..these sockets are enclosed and it might be a chore to try and get inside to fool with the thrid wire .
worst case scenario is i hook up a basic on/off switch...but if i can figure out how to get the lamp back to it`s original functioning state, that would be a win.....
if not,it`s no biggie....
if you don`t have the time to respond,it`s all good....but understand that if i burn the bunker down,my old lady may hold you responsible.....
let your conscience be your guide...:142hail:

are working on a switch."
Okay here is your issue. What you are ordering will be fine.
As you can see out of the new switch you are ordering it is a three position switch. So hook the blue wire to one socket, red to another socket and black to the power cord. That is what the diagram is showing.
So the two black wires, one from each socket, no longer have to be spliced together to the little black wire.
New switch.
Black is power which is considered position one.
Blue is position two with light one or "load one: coming on when set to that position.
Red is position three and light or "load" two and two lights coming on.
How it works is that inside that little rotary switch you are ordering is a bus bar that will provide a ground and close the circuit to both lights but that little bus bar is only closed, thus completing the circuit, when it is the last position. Don't worry about anything in the stem. You have a wire going to each socket and a wire to the power cord. You are golden bro. Use electrical tape, twist wrap them as the wiring diagram and I described and you are good bro. Let me know if you have any questions.
Hope that helps,
FDC
well that makes perfect sense.....the guy at the local electrical supply couldn`t make heads or tails of the situation and i actaully had the switch/rheostat with me.......
much,much appreciated......i`ll be shocked if this doesn`t work....:0074
and buddy...watch your p.`s and q.`s....i once killed a man in reno with a toilet bowl just to watch the s.o.b. look ridiculous....:0005
Cheers brother, anytime. :0074 :0074
if you aren`t afraid to give this crazy mofo your addy,i`ll send some pistachios your way as compensation for your time(and the fact that you had to wade through buddy`s seizure)...
jack`s p.o.`ed at me but hopefully he `ll shoot me an e mail on your behalf...
i do appreciate the help...
and btw...thanks to the others that chimed in with moral support(old school, greg.krc and 6`5")......
6-5'?...nice to weasel?...you feelin o.k.? .
Here's another perfect example of why buddy is a major dick.

Weasie,
I have no problem giving you my address, phone number, hell you can come over and bang my sister if you want to. You are good in my book.
If I may ask a favor though?
A really good guy on here has to bury his good friend tomorrow and I know that the Pistachios would be a really nice thing for him to receive right now. You don't have to at all, I just know that BleedingPurple could really use a pick me up, and a random act of kindness from the Wease!!! Well who wouldn't that be a really be a nice little pick me up for?! Just a request man and I am really glad everything worked out for you brother. :00hour :00hour
I will get you his addy or Jack may have it.
Cheers!
