Deangelo Hall is out of this game with a injury. I was kinda wondering who was going to defend that Steve Smith guy the Panthers have.

D?Angelo Hall and Mike Vick spotted at a Flowery Branch Racetrack, talking chit and flashing 50K earrings, at the gasoline pump after filling the tanks of their Mercedes. When asked why they were so excited, Hall replied, ?nobody thought I could fill this tank. Not you, not the gas pump, nobody. But I showed you all. I?m the greatest.

And Vick said.... This is my gas pump now, no one can ever say again that this isnt my gas pump.!
Yeh OK Mike, whatever you say.

The Falcons secondary is a joke. They have no one that can stay with Smith. It will be pitch and catch all day long. Not to mention Prohl and Curtis.
Delhomme gets above average time to throw which is also a big plus.

And bring in that Deshawn Foster guy and let him run rampant like he did in Carolina's stadium. The Falcons could not stop the guy. I thought he was a second coming of Larry Czonka for about a minute.

Falcons changes in linebacker corp all season, and still no Brady Smith out with a broken toe.

How the hell do you break a toe and not play. He must have huge toes and have the toe in a air cast or something.

The only thing the Falcons have to play for is having back to back winning seasons. 8-8 sure looks like a distinct possibility.

Is anyone in their right mind calling this a winning season ? Forget about it ! Play the last game, get it over with, and go home.

Now lets look at what Carolina is playing for. That should tell the story.

Carolina ranks a solid fourth in the league in rushing defense (87.5 yards per game) as Week 16 begins, and held the Saints to a modest 94 ground yards in last Sunday's win. The Panthers' three-man tackle rotation of Jordan Carstens (31 tackles, 3 sacks), Brentson Buckner (32 tackles), and Kindal Moorehead (20 tackles, 3 sacks) has been effective all season, and combined for 10 tackles in the victory over the Saints. Also putting forth a solid effort has been the linebacking corps of Dan Morgan (74 tackles, 3 sacks) in the middle and Will Witherspoon (69 tackles, 2 INT, 1.5 sacks) and Brandon Short (54 tackles, 0.5 sacks) on the outside. Morgan ranked among team leaders with six tackles versus New Orleans, and Short contributed four tackles to the proceedings.
.....................................................................................

Hey wait a minute.

The Falcons are the top of the NFL at rushing the football. Of course they wouldnt be if Vicks numbers wernt added in there.

Falcons, now meet another team in the Panthers,
that can stop the run ! This is three weeks now in a row. This is getting old.

Vick will be playing a meaningless game for him.

Will Vick put in his best effort to win this game at all costs ? I kinda doubt it, Ouch !

Carolina needs this game. The playoffs for this Panthers team is at hand.

Playoff teams dont usually lose this type of game.

They are the much better team at this juncture of the season. If the Falcons were going to win this game they would have beaten the Bucs. That was the game they needed. Not anymore.

It seems simple enough.

Mora apologizes for outburst
"If I offended anyone, I apologize," coach says

By STEVE WYCHE
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 12/27/05
Flowery Branch ? Falcons owner Arthur Blank and president and general manager Rich McKay met with coach Jim Mora Monday evening about his emotional outburst during and after a radio interview following the team's 27-24 overtime loss to Tampa Bay Saturday.

No disciplinary action was planned, according to team officials, but Blank said he and McKay felt the need to address the situation, among other football-related issues, for which Mora publicly apologized Monday after being questioned by reporters at a news conference.

"It's not that I'm angry at him. I love Jimmy. I just want him to understand that there are better ways to deal with things," Blank said while driving to the Flowery Branch headquarters to speak with Mora. "He has to set standards. There are ways to act when things don't go well."

Blank said that he, McKay and Mora probably would speak again after the season for an additional assessment about the direction of the team, which was knocked out of the playoffs with the loss to Tampa Bay.

Mora admitted throwing a radio headset to the ground when radio analyst Dave Archer asked him about possibly running a play on fourth-and-two instead of punting late in the overtime. The Buccaneers kicked the game-winning field goal a few plays after returning the punt. Mora answered the question before tossing the headset and ending the interview.

"The question that Dave asked, there was nothing at all wrong with it," Blank said. "It wasn't off base; it was fair. Jimmy knows better."

"I just was emotional, upset as anyone who just fought their guts out would be," Mora said. "I took the headphones down and slammed them down. The things bounced and I walked out. I wasn't in a mental state, at that time, to talk anymore. We'd been through too much for too long."

Mora said he does not think he has an emotional issue and that what happened Saturday was a rare occurrence when frustration overrode professionalism. He has been accommodating during every public media appearance this season, including Saturday, when he addressed reporters about 25 minutes after the game.

"I'm not perfect," Mora said. "There are going to be times, because of emotions [of] a tough loss [or] getting knocked out of the playoffs, you don't react the way you want to. I'm not trying to alienate anybody, the media, anybody. It's something I've got to get better at."

Mora said he apologized to Archer near the team bus before it left Raymond James Stadium for the team flight back to Atlanta. Archer said he and Mora ironed things out, then and spoke twice more that evening. Mora appeared on a weekly radio show Monday night with Archer and play-by-play announcer Wes Durham and apologized on air.

"It's all behind us," said Archer, a former Falcons quarterback who played for the San Diego Chargers when Mora was an assistant coach there. "We've spoken and it's over with. We even wished each other a Merry Christmas."

Blank said he has spoken to Archer early Monday and Archer told him that Mora had apologized and things were fine. It is not known if Blank spoke to anyone else with Infiniti Broadcasting, the parent company of Dave-FM, which broadcasts the games.

Rick Caffey, senior vice president/market manager for Infinity Atlanta Radio Group, declined comment other than saying, "It's all behind us."

Mora said he would prefer not to do live postgame radio shows after this season. It is not known if he stated his wishes to team officials before Saturday's incident or whether he would lose any income should he opt out of a radio agreement.

Mora under pressure here.

Going for the tie and not the win thing, is not a good tag to have placed on your back in the NFL.

Even his Dad critisized him on ESPN, I think it was.

This game will not be played to win by Mora, this game will be played not to make any stupid calls or decisions. Its called keeping your job.

In trying not to make a bad call, usually some crazy things happen to make it worse.
Can almost gaurantee there will be some crazy play that will be the talk of the NFL.

When that happens , this play wins.

This is a big key to winning this game.
Just get the season over with, and get ready for a good draft and free agent spending.

Geezz Louise.....

We got one coach playing for a championship and one coach fighting for his integrity.

The weve been through to much for too long statement indicates to me a great deal of stress
in the coaching staff of the Falcons.

Uh Oh

Already without right defensive end Brady Smith (dislocated big toe) for the eighth consecutive game and oft-used reserve defensive tackle Antwan Lake (shoulder separation), Atlanta's staff decided before the game not to play starting safety Keion Carpenter (thigh bruise) even though he was taken off the injury report on Thursday. Plus, nickel back and return man Allen Rossum (knee sprain) missed his third consecutive game.

In the second quarter, Pro Bowl cornerback/punt returner DeAngelo Hall was lost with a left shoulder strain, and left guard Matt Lehr's game ended with a calf injury.

No area was more affected than the secondary, where the Falcons frequently deployed three safeties (Ronnie Heard, Antuan Edwards and Bryan Scott), and one of them at times was used as a nickel back.

Bucs quarterback Chris Simms threw two interceptions, but after halftime he completed 18 of 26 passes for 185 yards and a touchdown.

I was watching Green Bay vs Chicago the other night. I was watching Favre pass the ball. I dont know what his final percentage was in passing that game, but I mean every pass seemed to be caught. Short passes, medium passes, long passes.

I wish Vick could do that.

Linebacker Keith Brooking, exasperated after the loss to Tampa Bay, said players and coaches exhausted every resource this season. The way things unfolded could be simple: The Falcons just didn't have enough.

"All 53 guys in that locker room, including the coaching staff, including staff, worked very hard," quarterback Michael Vick said. "We fought our [tails] off all year, and unfortunately we didn't pull out the games we were supposed to, and that's the way it is."

I like this play a lot Scott. This is the game I was looking at the hardest this weekend. I am very tempted to take the Panthers - the points, but I'm worried that the Falcons may come out and play their arses off. I know they have nothing to play for, but I think they would LOVE to potentially knock Carolina out of the playoffs. But have to agree, don't see Carolina losing this one. GL on your play.

Pride best motivation for Birds

By STEVE WYCHE
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 12/28/05
Having failed to make the playoffs ? or win a game that mattered down the stretch ? the Falcons are faced with drumming up enough pride to close out their season Sunday against the Carolina Panthers.

The healthy front-liners will play. Atlanta's not going to mail it in, coach Jim Mora said. Coming off a disappointing loss to Tampa Bay which ended their playoff hopes and extended a second-half slide after a 6-2 start, however, the Falcons are reaching for something to push them through.

"We're paid to play 16 games, and we're paid to give our best for 16 games, and that's what our guys will do," Mora said. "We've got to put some things together, patch-work some things and hope we can come up with a great effort and beat Carolina at home and give our fans, who've been with us a long time, something to cheer about." :scared

Said linebacker Keith Brooking: "I'm not going to quit, and I know the guys on this team aren't going to quit. We don't have those type.

The carrot is capturing the first back-to-back winning seasons in franchise history. A victory would give the Falcons a 9-7 record, which, coming off an 11-5 mark last season, would snap a 40-year drought. A loss and it will at least two more years before the Falcons can secure the record. :scared :scared

"We still have a chance to accomplish something that hasn't been accomplished here," Mora said. "While that's not what our ultimate objective is and really should never be, and I would hope that it never is, to have a winning record ? our ultimate goal will always be to be world champions ? it could be significant. It would make a lot of fans happy."

Breaking the dubious mark was an assumed given earlier this season, as was making the playoffs.

A string of losses to playoff-caliber teams ? and lowly Green Bay ? has put the Falcons in a position of having to avoid mediocrity. :scared

Carolina, which administered the Falcons' season-worst beating three weeks ago, 24-6, must win this game to assure a playoff berth. They are tied with Tampa Bay for the NFC South division lead at 10-5, and a loss could have it sharing the non-playoff misery the Falcons have gotten an early jump on. :scared :scared

Atlanta will have to come up with a defensive scheme to corral Pro Bowl wide receiver Steve Smith since it will be without Pro Bowl cornerback DeAngelo Hall, who separated his left shoulder against Tampa Bay. Omare Lowe, a special teams ace who has participated in just a handful of plays this season, will take Hall's place.
:scared :scared

The Falcons also will need to figure out a way to combat the intense outside pass rush and the "spy" scheme Carolina used against quarterback Michael Vick in its victory earlier this season. Injuries to offensive guards Kynan Forney and Matt Lehr and tailback Warrick Dunn are not expected to keep them out of the starting lineup, but their playing time could be affected.

"To say we're not disappointed, I'd be telling you something that wasn't true, but we've still got to get away from that," Mora said. "We've got to find something that motivates us to play our best game on Sunday."
.......................................................................

Yikes !

So D Hall the Pro Bowler is out with a hurt shoulder.

Uhhm...........I got a idea why dont we put Omare in there for D Hall.

Isnt Omare on the scout team ?

Well Yeh....

Do you think Omare can handle Steve Smith, and keep him from scoring a touchdown everytime he touchs the football ?

No one can handle Steve Smith.

UH OH !

Edwards makes first start of season

By STEVE WYCHE

Tampa ? The Falcons didn't wait until the offseason to overhaul their safeties.

Antuan Edwards was promoted to starting strong safety in place of Keion Carpenter for Saturday's 27-24 loss Saturday at Raymond James Stadium. Edwards joined Ronnie Heard, who replaced free safety Bryan Scott in the starting lineup two games ago.

Scott actually started against the Bucs as the Falcons opened in their three-safety "heavy" package, which Atlanta uses in run-probability situations.

This was Edwards' first start since last postseason, when he started against the Falcons for St. Louis in Atlanta's 47-17 divisional playoff victory.

No reason was provided for the lineup change. Carpenter was listed on the injury report Wednesday with a thigh injury, but he was removed from the report Thursday. Carpenter, the fourth-leading tackler (64), started every game this season.

Carpenter was on the sideline but was not in uniform. He was deactivated for the game.

Edwards, a former first-round pick of the Green Bay Packers whose career has been sidetracked by injuries, was signed Nov. 2. He has played nickel back the past three games in place of Allen Rossum, who has been out with a right knee injury.

Rookies fill in

Rookie Chauncey Davis started at right defensive end in place of fellow rookie Jonathan Babineaux. Babineaux, who has started most of the season in place of injured Brady Smith (toe), has been moved to tackle to provide depth because Antwan Lake (shoulder) did not dress.

I don't think Delhomme is going to have to worry much about interceptions by the Falcons. Most all of the players that have interceptions this year are sitting on the Falcons bench.

In contrast the Panthers have two players with
6 interceptions each in their Secondary.

Brooking intercepting a pass vs the Bucs. So he runs five yards, gets tackled, gets up and throws the football at the Bucs bench. 15 yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct. I am still not over that one. He for sure knows better than that. Thats just stupid.

It could be some bs revenge for a player that was taunting you on the field ?

Oh ok. Now I get it.

Holy hell. Omare Lowe is starting in place of Hall?! Wow. I went to school with Omare Lowe and let me tell ya, that guy was a terrible corner in COLLEGE. I still don't know how he is on an NFL roster. Panthers - the points just got a whole lot more appealing.

Although the Falcons are No. 2 in the NFL in kickoff coverage (allowing 19.5 yards per return) and tied for No. 7 in punt coverage (6.8), Atlanta's return games rank No. 13 in punts (8.5) and No. 23 in kickoffs (21.0). That's far below DeCamillis' standards. Penalties have compounded the problems.

The Falcons are the 17th-least penalized team overall in the NFL with 107 (Carolina leads the league with just 85 penalties against), and Atlanta's 40 offensive penalties are third-fewest (Carolina has 30, Denver 33).

But the Falcons' 25 special teams penalties are tied for third-most in the NFL behind Baltimore (30) and New Orleans (29).

Now that he is the number one guy, Foster says nothing really has changed in terms of preparation.

Nick Goings has taken over Foster's old role, spelling the starter several times a game. (Getty Images)

"I have been preparing myself the same way," said Foster, who has averaged 81.5 yards rushing per game over the last four contests. "I know the workload on me is going to be a little bit heavier so I just have to take advantage of it and be ready to go."

Assuming Foster's old role as understudy is Nick Goings, who filled in last season when both Davis and Foster were felled by early season injuries.

Despite leading the Panthers with 821 rushing yards a season ago, Goings accepted his role as a backup and is back in a position to help the team again. He rushed for 52 yards on 16 carries last week at New Orleans, allowing the Panthers to rest Foster for key stretches.

"He's a team player," said Foster of Goings. "That's just his personality. He's a great role player, and that just makes us better. No matter what we've asked him to do, he has always performed. He brings another element and another weapon out there for us.
....................................................................

If Foster and Goings combine for 150 yards
rushing, this game is a done deal.

Just meet me at the cash window.

If these two can run at all, Delhomme is going to find wide open receivers all around the mulberry bush.

Delhomme to throw for 300 yards with
2 touchdowns and no interceptions. This game will be won by the Panthers offense.

Its really all we need to know about this play.

I doubt the Falcons will manage two touchdowns and maybe a few field goals after not getting into the end zone from being in the red zone..

I smell money and it smells green !

Carolina needs this game. The playoffs for this Panthers team is at hand.

Playoff teams dont usually lose this type of game.

teams that NEED to win the last couple of weeks in the NFL usually dont. Needy teams tend to choke and play tight (for a recent example, see Chargers, San Diego).

Carolina running game has been mediocre at best. ONE 100 yard rushing game this year. Foster versus Dallas was extremely ineffective.

Dallas' Julius Jones WENT OFF on that vaunted Carolina rush defense. Jones has been mediocre at best this year, battling injuries, a sophomore slump, and having to share carries with Marion Barber.

I wonder if Carolina will be flat after making a nice comeback against Dallas last weekend only to lose it in the end.

Face it, with the playoffs out of reach for Atlanta, they can play looser and as a divisonal spoiler. Vick doesnt have to carry the team on Sunday. There are other guys like Dunn and Duckett that can shoulder the load.

i dont hate the play you made at all, but when i see teams that NEEEEEEEEEEED to win in the NFL...when they HAVE to have a win...they generally dont.

Carolina can still get in if washington loses (wash in a similar position as carolina) which is a minor luxury for them. i dont see philly laying down for the redskins..but that's a whole 'nother thread :)

Yeh last week the Falcons needed to win and I lost the play with them in overtime, as a moneyline dog.

Word is that Dunn is playing hurt with a tender hamstring. He may not last to get his 1500.

Duckett will run up the middle whenever he gets the ball, and that will be playing right into the Panthers hands as they have a above average defensive line.

If there is anything to worry about its the Panthers Secondary , giving up passing plays. But then I just remember its Vick back there with his 50% completion rate or maybe Schaub to mop up the loss in the furth quarter.

Strong motivation for Panthers. They are just too good offensively for the Falcons to stop.

Did you see that D Hall is out of the game ? He is the Falcons best player in the Secondary. Hall is Pro Bowl.

Delhomme is going to eat their lunch.

I better quit talking, I am getting tempted to slam this down hard.

I would be breaking a rule I have about never adding to a wager once its made.

Yeh but its at -185

hmmmmm
