Not for nothing but when you joined the league you had to answer an email and register to accept the invite. Yahoo fantasy leagues automatically generates an email to all registered owners when the commissioner posts a league message. As a matter of fact, that's pretty standard for all leagues. I would certainly check my spam folder or trash prior to refusing to pay. I'd be willing to bet that the commish is going to tell you that as well.
My only other question is that you stated you only went on the league website to register and never returned until draft night to sign in and draft. If that is the case, how did you know what position you were in the draft? Did you not do a single mock draft? Seems that if you were curious enough about the draft to actually text a stranger to ask about it, you'd have at least gone on the site first to look and see for yourself? Also, you stated the draft time and day was listed on the website when you signed up, yet you texted the guy to ask when it was when you said your already knew?
I have to tell you Saint, as a commissionerfor several leagues, I think you may have to pay here. I'm fairly sure your going to find you were notified in accordance with league rules.
Just my opinion, but rarely when it's just one player that screws up their draft is it the leagues fault.

Not a hundred percent positive what you mean here, however, it's been my experience that it's extremely rare for a commissioner to change the draft date and time for no apparent reason. Not inform anyone at all, choosing instead to make a generic post to the league message board that apparently is not attached to anyone's email. Respond to text messages concerning the exact draft date and time with wrong or absent if proper information. To do all that and only have one player not make it to the draft and not have any other players have an issue with these actions just seems to tip my bullshit indicating bird's beak into the water fairly quickly. That's all.Is this the Bud Selig school of Management? Sit around as Commish and let problems just happen.

I don't think it happened like that. I am also not insinuating Saint is lying, I'm saying it's VERY UNLIKELY that all events happened exactly as stated and that he, Saint, needs to check and make sure he wasn't notified IAW league rules before he refuses to pay his committed fee.

I interpreted the situation differently. The league message board might have been the well established mode of communication for years...but if I'm onboarding a new player who only knows one person and lives on the other coast, I am being way more proactive in my communication. I make sure to speak personally with everyone in my league the week of the draft to avoid issues like this. It's a weak Commish who does nothing, let's the problem happen, then points to a league rule after the fact. Just seems like it will be more difficult to collect in that scenerio.
Well that's very commendable that you'll go to such lengths as to personally call everyone in your league the week of the draft. It's rather pretentious to call all other commissioners that don't do that as weak. I run two leagues with bleeding purple and I don't even have everyone's phone numbers. All of our players are scattered around the nation and globe. We had one person late for our draft and he's a much loved member by myself and the mjs community, and his first couple picks were auto picked. I assure you he doesn't blame management for not massaging his nuts softly and whispering in his ear that the draft is starting. He, as well as everyone else in the league, received several emails and even a reminder posted on mjs add to when the draft was. It's his responsibility to know that and to make sure he's present for it. There is absolutely no way that any commish should have to personally call everyone to remind them to draft. That's ridiculous. Commissioners are not baby sitters, I don't call them to remind them to replace an injured player either.
Yeah dude, that's bullshit, if the method of communication is established as league message board which generates an email to each person, I give a crap where they live either, then it's the grown man's responsibility to ensure he's there. Just because he didn't get molly coddled to your or his personal level of acceptance doesn't mean he gets to cry and refuse to pay. Bullshit. He signed up to play, honor your commitment. His team isn't even bad either?
I would think as a commish you'd be more concerned with the fact that you don't know the guy. He's a friend of a friend, and here the season starts in a fortnight and he hasn't paid yet?! He's also the only one that missed the memo on the draft? Yeah, I don't know how long you've been doing the commish thing but people slow paying for a team, usually means they're trying to get out of paying if they don't get their favorite players.
By the way, extra communication doesn't remove the occurrence of a missed communication or even lessen it, quite the contrary. Just because it's your way doesn't mean it's the best way.

Which of the "several emails and posts" are counted as doing nothing by you? We have new guys in both leagues, communication in our league is done by email! That's how they accept the invitation in the first place so how is that doing nothing? Every single member has been informed no less than three times and it's posted on the league page and they get an automated reminder via email the day of the draft, how the fuck is that nothing? You're insinuating that by not personally phoning each player that a commissioner is derelict and lazy in his duties. You're wildly wrong. Do you send them a welcome aboard package? You're being ridiculous. This scenerio could never happen in my league, so it is a better way. If your preferred style of management is to do nothing and hope a brand new players just figures it out, then that's on you.

The point is that I think he needs to check his rules and his spam folders to see if he received an email. If so, he's on the hook. Period.
In the meantime I'll start typing up my essay for your commish of the year nomination.

I have 3 kids under 5 and a business to run.
What do you mean you've never heard of me? Don't you phone every member on M'S once a week to make sure we know who the Boys picked for the Hilton? Are you the Commish of Saint's league? You sure seem to know a lot about the details and are taking this very personally. I just can't believe you would change a draft date and not make sure everyone was aware of the change prior to the actual draft. But since your league is a self described global enterprise I am sure you have a handle on things.
Thanks for the nomination. I've actually never heard of you before so I am not sure your recommendation would mean much around here.

Honestly never have seen you post before?
I see you have a lot of posts but can't remember interacting before.
I have 3 kids under 5 and a business to run. If someone tells me that the draft is on x day at y time, I take it as that. I don't have time to check the dumbass league page messageboard because I've always been notified other ways. You guys are right, I am the new guy in this league. Perhaps that is standard. So the only guy I can really blame is the one guy, my friend, who invited me into the league. I'm a good guy and have a conscience and the 300$ won't break me so I will just eat it and move on.
I've participated in many leagues and not one of them relied solely on the crap message board on the league page for major things like draft changes.
