I thought Chuck Liddel already proved that avoiding takedowns is the only thing a boxer needs to learn to survive in mma

Btw1, no one in mma is in better shape than Floyd...period

Btw2, mma is getting better ratings b/c they put the best fighters in the ring with each other on a constistent basis. Boxing politics doesn't allow this to happen in our sport. So its not that mma is a better sport inside the ring, its just a better sport outside the ring.

Btw3, mma will never have an event as big as DLH-PBF...attendance, ppv buys, and purses for the fighters...will blow away any mma event

some good points guys.........but I have to totally disagree about the term "athlete" and who is better......ever hear the name GSP....I mean just look at that guy....there is no way a boxer is a better athlete then a mma fighter....sorry:com:

and remember.......Floyd said the following:

"I could step in the octagon today and in 10 seconds I'd knock any mma bumb on his ass"

he's an idiot.......sorry no two ways about it :SIB
(he would get smoked)

also.......ratings speak for themselves.....can't really argue that  :SIB

and I will tell you this if a big time boxer like Mayweather actually did back up his mouth.....ratings would be like the fu**ing superbowl :scared

but no boxer would ever do it......ever:SIB

Just like no mma fighter would ever step in the ring with a top notch boxer...ever

Floyd doesn't know what he's talking about, he's just running his mouth as usual. You have to realize that he doesn't represent the sport of boxing, he speaks for himself, 90% of the boxing community can't stand the guy.

I can't deny the ratings that mma has been getting, but I don't think boxing is as dead as you think. Mma is stacking every card with the best fighters in attempt to make the sport as popular as possibe, and its working. Unfortunatly boxing continues to let its politics get in the way of giving the fans what they want to see consistently, so the fringe fans are straying to the more active mma. Like I said, its not that mma is a better sport inside the ring, its just a better sport outside the ring

I never said boxers are better athlete's than mma fighters, clearly that is not the case. I actually enjoy watching the sport when there's no boxing on, but I have to defend my game

Btw, thanks for all the winners over the years kick

Jesus christ are all Canadians this ****ing dumb?

Youre like one of those D&D gamers or whatever theyre called, off in your own little world. You think your geeky wannabee sport is just the bomb.

You can think whatever you want to think but the fact of the matter is UFC fighters are bums.

They are more athletic than boxers? You are truly beyond help. They are talentless bums who cant fight with their hands so they have to try to learn a different method. If you want to think they are special you go right ahead. Its your fantasy world.

Dude what boxer is this so called great athlete? I mean do you honestly believe Tyson was a great athlete? Do you think the Klitzco's can run a 4.3 forty? Basketball players are great athletes, most football positions players are great athletes. Most boxers are not great athletes. I would also say that ufc guys are better athletes. We are talking athletes here. Its not that far apart but to think boxers are hands down better athletes is a reach.

As for Mayweather, and boxing struggling as a sport -- they are projecting that the fight this weekend will break the PPV record, and the purse could hit 50 million, these guys are doing very well for themselves. Do not think UFC will be offering that kind of cash anytime soon.

First off this is just one fight and if it wasn't Delayhoya it wouldn't even be this big. 2nd i was one of the ufc biggest critics. I thought there promotional skills were awful. That has changed now. They are ready to sign on with HBO and Showtime and now they are getting coverage in major news papers and ESPN has also agreed to cover the sport which is huge. The sky is the limit now. There are not many bigger fans of boxing than i am but this sport is coming on like a tidal wave. I do see a problem tho and that is over saturating the market with their product. Hey as a fan im getting the best of both worlds now so who cares which one is better. Honestly i think i get more jacked up over a ufc pay perview before i do with a boxing one. I'll take both tho.

Boxing tougher sport than MMA
Muay Thai tougher sport than MMA
Freestyle wrestling tougher sport than MMA
Greco Roman wrestling tougher sport than MMA
Judo tougher sport than MMA
Brazilian Jiu Jiitsu tougher sport than MMA
Sambo (Borba Sambo) tougher sport than MMA

In no way do I mean that any of the above sports are tougher in terms of requiring more skill, talent, athleticism, conditioning, speed, explosiveness, power, or strength. They are tougher simply for the fact that you are locked into one paticular skill set and you have no options but to compete based on the rules of that sport.

MMA is the TRUTH for the fact that it has the most real world application it's not even a debatable fact.

Almly seriously get a clue. The human leg is longer than the human arm, the distance a low kick has to travel to a lead leg is shorter than the distance a fist has to travel to the chin, it's why the leg kick is one of the best weapons in MMA. Slipping one doesn't apply like slipping a head kick it's apples and oranges. Have you ever seen a traditional Muay Thai match? If you have you would understand distance and see how effective what they refer to as a "teep" kick is for maintaining it. You seem to be under a misconception that MMA fighters don't understand the basic principles of stance, distance, circling, and footwork.....it's not like they stand in the octagon or ring with their feet glued together leading with their face. Not to mention they wouldn't stand there and trade with a great boxer, they would clinch take it to the ground and have their way, it's impossible to KO someone when they have you in a greco clinch or on the ground. You may not be aware but MMA is loaded with former Sambo world champions, BJJ world champions, NCAA champion wrestlers, Olympic Judo medal winners, Olympic Freestyle and Greco Roman medal winners. These are eltie level grapplers who can take down other elite level grapplers at will, how in the world do you think someone with absolutely no grappling skill will be able to avoid being taken down? Next time you get into a scuffle stand there and try to follow the Marquess of Queensberry rules and see how well it works when someone slams you through the ground and chokes you out.

Dana White has offered Mayweather the chance to fight Sean Sherk.... the lock of the millenium is that the fight wouldn't even last 3 minutes and Sherk would destory him. BM your my boy but I def disagree on that one, Shamrock in his prime would destroy Tyson and submit him at will it wouldn't even be close. Back in the 90's when Tyson was claiming to be the baddest man on earth and Shamrock was fighting in Pancrase in Japan and the early UFC....Shamrock challenged him to numerous fights and even went as far to submit the following to Tyson and his camp. "If Mike Tyson thinks he is so tough. I challenge him in a charity match in the octagon, if he beats me i'll donate one million dollars to any charity of his choice. But if I beat him then he has to donate one hundred thousand dollars to my charity." Tyson would never accept just like Mayweather will never accept the challenge.

I used to be biased having grown up with boxing. It is the first sport I was introduced to as a child and ever witnessed live in person or on TV. My great grandfather was a professional prize fighter and my uncle was a city golden glove champ. As long as I can remember it was my favorite sport and I still enjoy it, but to deny that it's on the decline would be stupid. MMA is on a meteoric rise, is a better sport, and is the future.

PPV STATS JAN-OCT 2006
1. BOX Oscar DeLa Hoya vs. Ricardo Mayorga 925,000
2. UFC Tito Ortiz vs. Ken Shamrock 775,000
3. UFC Matt Hughes vs. B.J. Penn 700,000
4. WWE Wrestlemania 636,000
5. UFC Matt Hughes vs. Royce Gracie 600,000
6. UFC Chuck Liddell vs. Renato Sobral 500,000
7. UFC Tito Ortiz vs. Forrest Griffin 425,000
8. BOX Shane Mosely vs. Fernando Vargas 420,000
9. UFC Chuck Liddell vs. Randy Couture 400,000
10.BOX Floyd Mayweather vs. Zab Judah 375,000

The 4 other big boxing ppv events of 2006 all were outside the top 10.

these numbers prove my point where it is Oscar and only Oscar that brings up these numbers.

my final point on this subject is that up till a few years ago i was on the side of the Boxer. growing up time and time again i saw the man with the hand skills knock out the wrestler in three different high Schools. I was always behind the theory that a good boxer will always beat a good wrestler any day of the week. This has changed because the wrestlers are getting skills with their hands. What is strange to me is that i think a wrestler will go out of his way to learn some boxing skills but a boxer will hardly ever try to get some wrestling skills. Last night in the Silva fight it was obvious that the big 6 ft 4 kid just wanted to rely on his boxing. What the other guy was doing when he took him down time and time again is another story. If this Kongo kid was fighting a guy like Monsoon he would have got pounded to death. You look at Vitor Belfort and there are not many guys walking the planet with quicker hands then him and he isn't knocking everyone out. He is vulnerable for the takedown and he has ground skills. I know he isnt a superstar boxer but he is good with his hands and top notch MMA guys find a way to avoid his punches.

One thing is clear to me: the sport of boxing takes much longer to perfect and become good at, most great boxers start at a young age and have developed thier skills. MMA on the other hand is much easier to learn, any has been in thier 30's can pick it up with a fair amount of training. There is a slew of guys in mid life crisis who decide to try MMA or jui jitsu. Not many in this age group decide to try boxing. Those skills needed to develop a good boxer have probably eroded by the time one reaches this age. To me boxers are more skillful , and whether or not that makes them better athletes depends on your definition.
With that said I dont think floyd mayweather would be my pick of a boxer to try MMA. A srtonger more sturdy boxer would be my choice someone like edison miranda, shane mosley, or cotto.

BOXLOCKS...never claimed WWE is a quality sport hell it's not even a sport, has a closer resemblance to a highschool theatrical production than an actual sport, but despite how stupid it is it makes money.

You said "I thought Chuck Liddel already proved that avoiding takedowns is the only thing a boxer needs to learn to survive in mma"

Have you ever rolled with a legitimate grappler? You make it sound like it's so simple to just sprawl and hit your whizzer. If that was the case you would never see a single takedown in Olympic Freestyle. Do you really think a boxer or anyone for that matter can just pickup an elite level takedown defense and avoid being taken down by guys with ADCC, Mundials, Olympic, or NCAA pedigree?

Chuck Liddell is also not a boxer. First and foremost he has wrestled since a young age and is a former Div. 1 NCAA wrestler, a BJJ purple belt, a Kenpo practioner, and a black belt in Koei-Kan. He has very solid sprawl, downblocking, and scrambling abilities not to mention he is very athletic, quick+ agile, and he certainly didn't acquire these skills over night. He certainly looks nothing like a boxer with his unorthodox stance, keeping his hands so low, the weird angles he throws from, and those looping bombs he throws. He is successful because he is a skilled wrestler with a very solid take down defense, is very unorthodox, athletic, and hits like a ton of bricks.

CHILL...Please list all of these thirty something has beens who have picked up MMA and had any degree of success in Pride, K-1 Heros, Shooto, or UFC.

If anyone thinks MMA is getting such great ratings because of stacked cards your either crazy, or haven't been a fan for very long. PRIDE cards were stacked and thats why it was 100x more enjoyable to watch than UFC, but the UFC cards are a big time joke full of crappy uninteresting fights. Just go and look at the cards from the events in those stats I posted. Hell go look at Hughes vs B.J. which had 700,000 buys.

BOXLOCKS......good points, but one key difference...any MMA fighter knows that if they step into a boxing ring under boxing rules they'd get killed. Name one mma fighter that has ever shot his mouth off claiming this

On the other hand you have morons like Mayweather (and some other top boxers) and almly for that matter saying that a UFC fighter would get crushed if a top boxer stepped into the octagon:SIB

and box....thanks for your winners as well!

and finally......I wish Mayweather would back up his mouth......I'd pay 400 dollars PPV to watch him step into the octagon......could you imagine the ratings for that :scared

Kickserv....def agree Floyd is without a dobut a moron. Just like James Toney heres what he claims at least he gives MMA some respect, but he's still slightly delusional:

"UFC is not ready for someone like me. I am too violent"

"99 percent of boxers who would go in the UFC would probably get their ass whopped. But I am one percent, I never got my ass whopped"

"If they want to make it boxer vs. UFC, if Dana White has the balls, like he does on TV, he can call Dan Goossen and we can make it happen. I will fight Randy Couture"

I think some boxers are starting to realize that they very well may be aboard a sinking ship. I'm sure Floyd vs Oscar will do huge numbers, but in terms of popularity in the long run I think MMA will win out.

I still find it utterly hilarious how some of you guys assume that just because someone all of a sudden works on a paticular aspect of fighting that they are instantly going to be good at it. Assumming that a few weeks or months working some no-gi submission wrestling is going to put you at a competitive level with men who have done it their whole lives.... is like me claiming that if I take 8hrs of batting practice per day for the next 3 months that I could probably hit most MLB pitchers.

Forget the fact that these boxers could not avoid being taken down in the first place, but what do you think they are going to do when they are on the ground? It's pretty hard to defend any submission when you have absolutely zero submission defense in the first place.... and lack even the most basic+elementary skills in regards to technique and position.

I love to see Toney do it. I don't even think he could knock anyone out with the small gloves. I love Toney and think he is a terrific boxer but i could just see him lying on the mat within seconds and probably trying to bite Randy after getting tied in a knot. These guys like Randy are world class wrestlers and i would hope Randy's pride wouldn't get in the way and he tries and stands with him. Im willing to bet that Toney never wrestled a day in his life. These world class wrestlers are so quick he wouldn't know what hit him. I saw that show joes against the pro's and Randy was on there and it was embarassing what he was doing to those guys. I know if i had to fight one of them it would be Toney and not Randy.

Mr. Chill,
With all due respect, most MMA guys began as grapplers and have been wrestling since elementary school. I believe boxers are probably similar, but I just wanted to note that boxers just won't "pick it up with a fair amount of training" much like a wrestler won't "pick up boxing" after sparring for a year or two.

On a side note I agree boxers are better athletes and most condition their bodies to go 12 rounds, which is considerably longer than a MMA title fight. The aspect of strategy and getting into the late rounds seems to land in the boxing area.

I enjoy both and like seeing the best matchups. DLH-MAY will be a fun night.
