05:00 PM Pacific Time Friday, Oct-17 - Stats Matchup
Boise State is an incredible 19-2 ATS ATS all time in conference home games when not favored by 26 points or more, but I don't like the idea of bucking an underrated Hawaii squad that is good defensively (5.3 yppl allowed to teams that would combine to average 5.9 yppl against an average team) and just 0.1 yppl worse than average on offense. Boise State is a very good team, but my math model only favors the Broncos by 18 points. This looks like a good game to pass on.

*BOISE STATE 41 - Hawaii 10[/b]?UH progressing under new HC McMackin. But won?t be dissuaded from supporting hopeful BCS-buster BSU, playing ferocious defense (no TD last 8 Qs!) to complement an always well-designed, fluid attack. Broncos highly-accurate RS frosh QB K. Moore (72%, 10 TDs, 3 ints.) has the diverse weaponry to exploit undersized Warrior defense that?s allowed 101 combined pts. vs. the top two attacks it has faced (Florida & Oregon State). Fast-starting BSU has outscored opponents 117-23 in 1st H.

BOISE STATE 48 - Hawaii 10 - (8:00 - ESPN) -- Two straight wins for 'Bows (10
takeaways), but still a 205-100 pt deficit in their last 6 line games. Broncos again
a power (5-0), averaging 41 ppg in their last 15 games. Moore: 8 TDs along with
889 PYs in his 3 starts, & there is always RB Johnson. A bit of a payback in this.

BLUE CHIP TOTAL

I'm playing on Hawaii and Boise State to finish UNDER the total. These teams have always had a reputation of being powerful offensive teams. That's not entirely true this year though, as Hawaii's offense is nothing like it used to be. While the Warriors run a "run and shoot offense," they are throwing fewer deep balls and are running more frequently. They come in averaging only 21 points per game including a mere 16.3 per game on the road. In those three road games, the Warriors managed only 264.7 yards per game. The Hawaii defense has really come around the last few weeks though. Three games ago, they held San Jose State to just 20 points. They followed that up by limiting Fresno State to 29. That doesn't sound all that impressive but that was on the road and the Bulldogs are a potent offensive team. Last time out, the Warriors were even better as they limited Louisiana Tech to just 14 points. Note that the Warriors have seen the UNDER go a profitable 14-6 their last 20 games (with a total) on turf. It's true that Boise State is strong offensively once again. Through five games, the Broncos are averaging 33.6 points. However, the defense has been even more impressive. The Broncos are allowing just 11.2 points per game and have held four of five opponents to a touchdown or less. In three home games, they are allowing a mere 5.7 points per game and only 278 total yards per game. Not surprisingly, both Boise home games which had a total finished comfortably under the number. Last year's meeting between these teams finished below the number and I expect tonight's game to do the same. *Blue Chip

Take "Over"
This is a short road trip for San Jose (4-0). Patrick Marleau scored two goals, Evgeni Nabokov made 31 saves and the Sharks kept new coach Todd McLellan perfect through four games with a 5-2 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday. Jonathan Cheechoo had one of San Jose's two short-handed goals, plus Marleau is doing it all, excelling as a penalty killer and forechecker. This offense takes on a terrible Anaheim defense, one that has allowed 17 goals through 4 games (0-4 record). That's the most goals allowed by any team in the NHL through four contests. This shapes up as a game with plenty of offense -- especially by the visitors. Play the Sharks/Ducks over the total.

Free pick - Boise State/Hawaii OVER

Johnny Guild

Friday, October 17th 8:00 PM EST.
Hawaii Warriors (3-3) at (15) Boise State Broncos (5-0)
Bronco Stadium - Boise, Idaho
The Warriors beat ranked team Fresno State as a 21-point underdog on the road last weekend, but the Bulldogs help out with six turnovers. Hawaii will have a tough task tonight against 15th-ranked Boise State in Idaho.

Look for the Broncos? powerful defense to close down Quarterback Inoke Funaki and his crew. However, a 24.5 spread is doable for the spirited Warriors. They do play the Broncos tough. Go easy in a close battle against the spread.

Hawaii Warriors + 24.5

Mike Huguenin

Hawaii (3-3) at Boise State (5-0), 8 p.m., ESPN
The buzz: Hawaii has steadied itself after the insertion of Inoke Funaki at quarterback. But Boise State has won 46 consecutive regular-season home games and looks to be in good shape to finish unbeaten for the second time in three seasons.
The line: Boise State by 24.5.
The pick: Boise State 48-17

SPORTS ADVISORS

Hawaii (3-3, 2-3 ATS) at (15) Boise State (5-0, 3-1 ATS)

Boise State will try to remain undefeated and avenge a heartbreaking loss from a year ago when the Broncos host Hawaii in a Western Athletic Conference matchup on the Smurf Turf at Bronco Stadium.

The Broncos, long known for their powerful offense, have relied on their defense this season as they rank seventh in the nation in points allowed (11.2 per game), limiting the opposition to seven points or less in four of their five games. On Saturday, Boise State went to Southern Mississippi and scored a 24-7 non-conference win as 10-point favorites, getting three touchdown passes from QB Kellen Moore, all in the second quarter. Moore has completed 71.3 percent of his throws for 1,339 yards, 10 TDs and three INTs.

Hawaii has won two straight, including a 24-14 home win Saturday over Louisiana Tech as a 7?-point favorite, forcing four turnovers and getting 224 passing yards and two TDs from QB Inoke Funaki. The last time the Warriors left the islands, they stunned then 22nd-ranked Fresno State 32-29 in overtime as a 21-point underdog, forcing six turnovers in beating a ranked opponent on the road for the first time ever.

These schools were both undefeated when they hooked up in Hawaii on Nov. 23, and the Warriors prevailed 39-27 as a 2?-point home chalk, outgaining Boise State 574-323. That result snapped a six-game Boise State winning streak in this series (4-2 ATS). In addition, the Broncos had scored at least 41 points in five straight games against Hawaii prior to last season.

The Warriors are in ATS slumps of 2-5 overall, 1-5 on the highway, 2-6 on Fridays and 8-19 against teams with a winning record, but they are 5-2-1 in their last eight October contests. The Broncos are on positive ATS runs of 7-3 overall, 5-1 in WAC contests, 8-2 on Fridays, 38-16-1 on the Smurf Turf and 39-19 following a spread-cover.

Hawaii is getting outscored by an average of nine points per game this season (30-21) and outgained by an average of 38 yards per contest (370-332). On the flip side, Boise?s stout defense is supported by an offense that nets 33.6 points and 432.2 total yards per game.

Hawaii is on over runs of 21-8-1 following a spread-cover and 19-7-1 in October, but the under is 9-2 in its last 11 overall and 6-1 in its last seven WAC contests. For Boise, the under is 7-3 in its last 10 overall, 5-1 in its last six conference games and 5-1 in its last six after a spread-cover.

Finally, the over is 4-2 in this rivalry dating back to 2002 (2-1 at Boise State).

ATS ADVANTAGE: UNDER

Hawaii/Boise State Under 52.5

Hawaii beat this team 39-27 last year at home. You remember that game? That was in Hawaii and it was for the Conference Championship. Heck, I am a huge dog bettor but this is exactly why I am staying away from this game. After all, let me ask you a question. You want to lay 24 points to a Hawaii team that just won outright at Fresno State in overtime as 3 touchdown dogs? Or against a Hawaii team that covered against a Louisiana Tech taem and seems to be getting things figured out? Or, do you want to bet against Boise State who is fired up from last year's conference loss and plays this Hawaii team on their blue turf? If anything, I think Boise will take an early lead and I expect Hawaii to come back in the second half as they are still a young team and will look to get settled in by the second half. Boise State has covered their last 3 including winning at Southern Miss and covering a tough spread in which I think Vegas expected Boise State to win but hit the cover. Yet, the Broncos managed to cover that ballgame. Something interesting you can note is that Hawaii has covered the last 3 times these 2 teams have played and Boise State has covered the last 5 times before that. The public is on the over to a tune of 75% while just 25% is on the under. So, if you are looking to fade the pubilc here, the under would be a smart play. In fact, that will be my comp play today. As remember, in a conference game, defense is much more likely to take precedence. Of course, having said that, if you think Hawaii is going to be a strong play, you would lean over. But, given that Boise State has revenge and it's a conference game, I think this game shadows their strengths. Thus, my comp pick here is on the under. The under is 5-1 for Hawaii in Conference games and the under is 6-1 for Boise State in conference games which feeds my point about conference games typically going under. gl.

BOISE ST over Hawaii by 21
You know Broncos head coach Chris Petersen has this game circled in blue
on his Boise State calendar: last year?s 39-27 win by the Warriors is just one
of only THREE SU losses the BSU leader has endured while compiling a stellar
28-3 SU record. There are lots of good numbers and reasons to play the Boys
in Blue this week, including a near-perfect 10-1 ATS log as conference home
chalk and a 6-1 ATS effort when playing with WAC revenge. But before we
open our wallet, we must note that Hawaii has covered three meetings
in a row against Boise ? plus the Warriors have shaken off a slow start to
show continued improvement and confi dence every week. Also don?t forget
that the Broncos fall into our ?5-0 Fat Cat Fade? scenario, a directive that
gives added value to the already substantial pointspread. If you have to get
involved in this one, our advice is to take the points.

double-dime bet8 BUF (-149)BetUS vs 7 VAN
Analysis: BUFFALO ? The Sabres were extra hungry entering this season and they?ve already proven to be a ?play on? team! Buffalo has won each of their first three games as, after missing the playoffs last season, their hunger has reached an all new level this season. The Canucks also entered this season with a full head of steam. They had an excellent camp before the season started and Vancouver started off the season with back to back wins over division rival Calgary before playing an awful game at Washington. However, after the ugly loss to the Capitals, the Canucks bounce back huge with an overtime win at Detroit last night. After a huge win over the defending Stanley Cup Champions, there won?t be much left in the tank for the Canucks tonight. That spells trouble against the refocused and re-energized Sabres on Friday! Buffalo is also coming off of a big win but it was Wednesday and it wasn?t the defending champions that they knocked off either. In other words, the Sabres are much better prepared for this game than the Canucks are, both mentally and physically. Buffalo is getting fantastic netminding from Ryan Miller and they have been excellent on the penalty kill. So far this season the Sabres have allowed just three goals in their three games and they?ve killed all 15 power plays! Even though Roberto Luongo is one of the best goalies in the game he has not been on top of his game recently as he?s allowed 12 goals in his last three starts! Also, it is expected that back-up goalie Curtis Sanford will get the start tonight in between the pipes since it?s the second night of a back to back situation for the Canucks. As a result, this one will be all Sabres and that makes Buffalo well worth the price!

Analysis:
****4 UNIT WAC GAME OF THE YEAR****

During the summer, there were three games that really stood out to me. They were Ohio State/Wisconsin, Florida/LSU and this one. So far, I'm 2-0 +7 units on those game and I go for the sweep tonight. This is a HUGE revenge game for Boise State. Last year Boise was beaten out by Hawaii for the WAC crown in their final regular-season game, losing 39-27. Head coach Chris Peterson is a huge believer in the Ric Flair-like motto to be the champs, you must first beat the champs and he's been preaching that to his team all week long. Boise has one of the best defenses in the country. Boise State ranks seventh in the nation in scoring defense, allowing an average of 11.2 points. The Broncos have given up seven points or fewer in four of their five games. And we all know that the Broncos pour on the points at home on the Smurf Turf.

But the reason I really love this game is because everything worked out for us. This spread should be around 35 but we got lucky because Hawaii is on a two-game winning streak coming into this matchup. However, looking closer into the wins and we find they aren't very impressive. La Tech is awful on the road and we now realize that Fresno State was vastly overrated at the start of the year. But because of those two wins, we get a nice 23.5 point spread here, much lower than where I think this number should be. Colt Brennan and the Rainbows ripped this defense last year for close to 600 yards and that's not good news for new starting quarterback Inoke Funaki. Funaki has led Hawaii to the two straight wins but he's in for a rude awakening tonight against a very stout Boise defense that will pressure him all game long and force him into turning the ball over.

We have the much better team at home where they hardly ever lose in a huge revenge spot. That's good enough for me to make Boise State my WAC Game of the Year.

HAWAII vs. BOISE ST.

No. 15 Boise tries to remain undefeated as the defense has been the highlight and suprise of this season coming off yet another outstanding game on defense. The Broncos (5-0, 1-0) were beaten out by Hawaii for the WAC crown in their final regular-season game last year losing 39-27 on Nov. 23 and that was against quarterback Colt Brennan and a Hawaii offense that averaged 43.3 points per game in 2007. Now Brennan has moved on to the NFL, Hawaii is 3-3 overall and the Broncos have been shutting down opposing offenses this season. Boise State ranks seventh in the nation in scoring defense allowing an average of 11.2 points per game. The Broncos have given up seven points or fewer in four of their five games. For the Broncos, their redshirt freshman quaterback has completed 71.5 percent of his passes for 1,335 yards and 10 touchdowns with only three interceptions. The Warriors also have a first-year starter at quarterback in Inoke Funaki who has helped them win two straight. The junior passed for two TDs and ran for 79 yards in a 25-17 victory over then-No. 22 Fresno State on Oct. 4 and threw two more TDs in a 26-14 victory over Louisiana Tech on Saturday night. The Broncons will have a tough time with Warriors quraterback Funaki who is hard to stop. Funaki threw for a career-high 224 yards against Louisiana Tech and also picked up his first career rushing touchdown. He is a young quarterback but he's got something special and is just putting the ball on the money now. His talent and the team picking up confidence in the last two games should keep Hawaii within the number.
