Putting me on the spot, eh? :D

Honestly, I really don't know enough to determine for MYSELF whether she is sane or not. I'm sure I can make some fantastic arguments for both sides, which is why I don't like this "insanity" defense. It's just so easy to hide behind it for the defense. My real problem is the inconsistency of the verdicts and sentencing between this case and the "dog mauling" case. If you ask me, I'd much rather stick to Medicine where things are much more straight forward. "Take a couple of Tylenols and call me in the morning" :D

Got a game to watch, fellers. GL

I posted this in the wrong thread...and have now copied it here. Here we go...

One interesting aspect about this case that has been touched upon is that this woman had such severe post partum depression after her 4th child, I believe requiring hospitalization, that she was on the brink of suicide and/or killing her kids.

After this episode, her doctors advised her and her husband that she should under no cicumstances have another pregnancy, as the depression could well get worse...

Her husband's reply (backed incidentally,by their preacher) was that it was God's will that she bear as many children as possible. This same guy now sounds like he may try and sue her doctors...

Should he not be held responsible to some degree???

Dr Freeze, in your medical training you have no doubt been exposed to psych and O & G...have you never seen a really severe case of post=partum depression? ie with associated psychosis?

cheers

I agree 100% with Ferdville and Ozball,
While I agree with the conviction and the sentence I have no doubt something was seriously wrong with her. There was a ton of proof WAY before this happened and from professionals.

While I don't think he is as culpable as her, he KNEW and was told that there was something very wrong with her and specifically after giving birth, was told it could be serious having another child and did it anyway. He wouldn't listen to anyone, wouldn't listen to the warning signs and his kids paid the price.

what is real interesting is that Mr. Yates has been all over the press blaming doctors and everyone else but he and his wife.....there is absolutely nothing you can do if people are unwilling to follow your advice.......if she was capable of making the decision to not follow the advice of a doctor, she was capable of reasoning her way through simple moral doctrine.....

as far as how they use God and such.....nothing short of blasphemy -- a very serious offense in Christianity as any person of faith knows......

also -- most psychiatrists will tell you that any person who commits murder does such an act in an unsound state of mind....because the mother did such an act...as far as depression is concerned -- a sense of reality IS lost.....but....very hard for me to see it carried to such a limit....your sense of responsibility is still there yet somewhat blurred but obiously it was not too blurry for this lady to realize what she did was wrong.....she knew if and the evidence of this speaks for itself
