Biking won't be too bad even if you don't train unless there's a shit load of hills. Running looks good for you, it's the swim that would kick my ass. If I were you I would spend most of my time swimming laps at a pool. Are you a good swimmer? If you are, you should beat her in my opinion. Good luck Dan!

I am 33, she is 34 or 35, dunno know for sure.

eating pizza, yes.
drinking, no.

Start training everday by running. When you buy a bike try and buy one with the skinny tires and check the weight of the bike. The lighter the better. Try and get something light weight. Don't buy a mountain bike with fat tires. I do not know the course that you are takeing if it is a smooth road buy the racer. If you are on a trail buy a hybyrd bike (TREK 7200 with 1.75 tires $400) that will get the job done for you. Good Luck.

ok.

Yes, there will be a website that the results will be posted on.

I went for a run this morning - just to get a gauge of how screwed I am.

3miles - 21:40

She does 3 miles in 24:00 currently.

And, I threw up 3 times after I did my run. So I should be lighter now, which means next time I run I will probably be quicker.

Based on what I can find for times from past years events, if you guys are up for wagering amongst yourselves, I came up with what I think is a fair over/under time stamp for me.

will complete course in under/over 1 hour & 38 minutes.

Ok, so running will be your strong suit of the bunch, for sure, as compared to her. Unfortunately, it's the last leg and part of the bet is that she can not pass you at any time throughout the race.

one thing that is changing my tune a little: You mentioned in the first post that she has been "training hard". I actually read this as she does these often. I see where I was mistaken now. If this is also her first go-around, I am less inclined to back her so fervently.

I would almost be willing to back marine in the bet now, Clint... :SIB

dawgball -
to my knowledge, she has never done something like this before. This will be her first time as well.

I'm taking this is as serious as I can to beat her. Should I win, this will put her on life "tilt" - and watching her implode and go on a friggin rampage losing to me will be well worth every drop of sweat and bucketfull of vomit that leaves my body.

bike course - neighborhood/suburban road race. gentle hills, mostly straighaway, the course is laid out like a big diamond.

the run - a circle around a lake. there is a sidewalk around the lake, which I think will be the course, or they might let us run on the grass next to it. not sure. either way, that is the least of my worries.

Bike I have my eye on. A schwin road racing bike. 14 speed, 33 pounds. - $128 on the clearance rack.

If I was you I would get two spotters for race day. One to keep an eye on her and the other to let you know her pace. I'm willing to be she goes very slow but is a guaranteed finisher.

Not that it matters but about what does she weigh?

On the course!
I think you will drown.

I am not joking.

I think you will need to be hauled out of the water, or you will drown.

Picture an Olympic sized pool. You will need to go back and forth, 17 times to complete a half mile. You are telling us that you are really not in any shape at all right now. Plus, on a lake, you will have to be fighting some sort of current, I would suspect, at some point in time?

Now......Do you honestly think you could swim that much at a pool, without stopping? Swimming, is a SHITLOAD of work!

If this gal has any conditioning at all, she will probably pass you in the water, if you don't quit.

dawgball, not sure yet. Kind of like betting on jai-alai or some other sport I know nothing about.

Marine, you don't ever run but did 3 miles in less than 22 minutes?? I might have to call :bsflag on that one, but I'll take your word for it, and you're way ahead of where I thought you would be.

I was going to say the same thing...you've got to be in decent shape to run what you did.

The key will be to pace yourself. Putting in 30% more energy into your swim is not going to result in a 30% payoff regarding your time/lead...but it damn well could destroy you later in the race. Seriously just pace yourself swimming and don't bust a nut on the bike or you are in for a long run.

BTW YYZ it would be 15 laps of an olympic size pool for half a mile (1500 meters is 30 laps and is a mile)

Just have your wife chase you with a strap-on attached at her hip for your run and you'll do one of two things: average 6 minute miles or just stop running and go with the flow. I still can't figure out which.

thats a 7+ minute mile. that's not really busting a nut there bud.

and no, I don't run. Walk the dog, lead an active lifestyle.. hunting, fishing, farming etc.
Now mind you, I haven't run in probably the 9-12 months, but there are stages in my life when I was doing 50+ miles per week. It's not like I have never run before and am learning how to put one foot in front of the other.

Thanks for this thread. It offsets the boring "I'm a lifetime couch potato, now why am I going to die tomorrow" thread.

I've done the same length tri and the swimming is the problem. I did it in the ocean and with 302 people in it I didn't have a problem finding my bike because there were only 2 left:mj07: :mj07: . The rest of it is easy and should make up some time if you are not a swimmer. Start training in a pool and have someone teach you the right breathing technique. Good Luck w/the swim cap

girl who is uber competitive and snobby claims she has been "training hard" for a mini triathelon coming up on 17 Aug.

for wagering purposes amongst forum members....

I cap this as an important statement. I have met many people (esp females sorry) that have a totally different idea of what "training hard" or a real workout is. I also would put more weight in what Marine says about his past experience in pushing his mind and body to the max. I'll take a guy that's got a couple decades plus of past activity (sports, working out, military etc, been there before) who's not in top form (but probably has a tight ass) against some talker that's been breaking a light sweat with her color coordinated gear and drinking vitamin water.

An Olympic pool is 50 meters long. A half mile is 800 meters. So, there are only 8 down and backs in an Olympic pool.

The difficult part of the swim is going to be the traffic. People kicking you. There is no lane line to guide you in a lake, so you constantly need to look up at buoy and adjust.

Do lakes have currents? :)

I guess I can see how my 17 times could look like "complete rounds" of the pool. I should have wtitten 17 lenghts of the pool.

Still......It's a shitload for someone who doesn't swim.

And do lakes have currents? Currently.......yes.
