It depends on the sport....and it depends on the "fake crowd" sounds. I won't watch any sport where the TV Network pumps in the "fake crowd sounds", that is just stupid.

Watching MMA and Rugby with no crowd has been great. I actually prefer watching MMA with zero fans.

It really depends on the sport, but as I said, any sport on tv with the "fake crowd" shit is a no go for me.

I don't know anybody that wants to watch a sporting event with that fake crowd shit, it is not only annoying, it is just stupid. But I guess people do enjoy it, why else would the TV Networks do it? Obviously some out there like it.

The MMA with zero fans has been a big hit (pardon the pun), pretty much every MMA fan loves it.

I think the PGA Tour (players especially) miss having fans on the course. Although it is good watching and not have to hear the idiots yell dumb shit when a player hits a tee shot.

But with that said, of all the sports that have restarted since the virus shut-down, pro golf seems to miss the fans the most.

Really the only sport I have watched is golf and it really didn't make any difference in my viewers opinion. The announcers have more of an impact on viewing golf than the fans, with the exception of the Phoenix open. The NFL has always been boring to me verses Ncaa. College football will really be strange without the crowds/bands, but......we will have to wait and see on football. I have not watched an entire NBA game since the 80's

I have been very very unimpressed with the overall lack of creativity in sports broadcasting during the pandemic. While a large percentage of the world's workforce have had to figure out how to partially (if not completely) redo the way they get work done, the sports networks seem content to just mark time and wait for things to go back to "normal". Or they manage to make it worse. Haven't watched a ton of KBO but really pisses me off when they constantly bring in the 2 (and sometimes 3) Zoom boxes off to the side with the commentators in them. Why are you showing us this? In a "normal" baseball broadcast, you might see the commentators for 10 seconds before the inning starts. Who decided that people really wanted to see more of them? Even more annoying when they bring in an unrelated guest to interview in the middle of the broadcast. Most of the time during the interview they don't even bother commenting on the action. There is already such a lack of live sports to air - so now during the few live events you do have to air why do you want to relegate the action to the role of afterthought happening in the background. Like this:

KBO.jpg

You've got a KBO banner at the top taking up 10% of the screen; the normal sports news crawl at the bottom taking up another 10%, and then the commentator boxes on the right taking up 1/3. You're left with less than half the screen actually showing the event. I understand it's the KBO - airing when 90% of the US is asleep but still - you're supposed to act like the thing you're broadcasting actually matters to someone.

But I digress - we've had the technology to digitally insert crowds for literally decades now. I'm not saying I necessarily want that but I'd sure like to see someone give it a try. Or just darken/blur the stands. Doesn't even have to be a high tech solution - the TBT basketball tournament just put up a black curtain around the court behind the two benches and that worked great. Your eye isn't immediately drawn to all this empty space and instead you focus on the action. Watching that tournament is the closest I've felt to watching "normal" sports since March. Agree that golf still works well too - removing the loud, attention-seeking idiots while losing the overall crowd cheers is a net positive tradeoff for me. Don't follow MMA so can't comment on that.

I agree with johnnyonthespot, with the lack of live pro sports worldwide, why would a TV Network make the screen small and bring in "zoom boxes off to the side" during a live broadcast? That is just dumb:facepalm:

For the pro sports I have watched without fans.....

- Rugby, prefer fans, but actually don't mind watching with zero fans in the seats.

- Aussy Rules Football, miss the fans, better viewing with fans in the crowd.

- MMA, I prefer it with no fans, you can hear all the body shots and kicks, and the trash talking!

- Golf, prefer fans, but at least you don't have to hear the idiots in the crowd yell dumb shit.

- Soccer, most Networks use the "fake fan noise" so I have to stop watching, can't handle it.

Can't wait for NHL playoffs to begin, there better not be any "fake crowd noise" when the NHL drops the puck:mad:
