Syracuse vs Wake Forest 06:30 pm Under 44
Let?s let Wake Forest?s head coach Jim Grobe tell the story:
?One thing we do know right now is we?ve got better depth
and more football players to put on the field than any time
since we?ve been here. I expect to play better and I expect
to be a better football team. I don?t think there?s any
question that we have the best talent we?ve had here on
defense. It doesn?t even seem close to me right now and not
just from a depth perspective. We?ve got better players
there now.??
The Deacons are tied for the largest number of returning
defensive starters (10) in the nation. This is a good thing,
because their offense is known for, and should continue to be
known for, going on long drives and coming away empty.
Starting QB Mauk had only one touchdown pass and six
interceptions last season and he won?t improve much simply
by lining up in a shotgun, which is what they have planned
for him more often. "I just want to be efficient, limit my
turnovers and mistakes and manage the game," Mauk said Tuesday.
"If I can do that, we're going to win. We have a very good
defense and good offensive skills guys."
?Game managers? are not the kind of QBs you want to be laying
two scores with. Syracuse?s offense is pretty weak. But with
Mauk playing ?not to lose,? this sets up as a cat-and-mouse
field position game. When Wake punts, Syracuse?s return men
will be either a kid who had a cast on his arm during the week,
or a 5?4? walk-on named Max. Seriously. "Fair catch" will be
the order.
Wake?s Grobe, on his QB Mauk: ?He's taken a lot of pride in
leading our football team, trying to take care of the football
and trying to keep from hurting the offense. I think he
understands if we can distribute the ball and not make a lot
of mistakes, we'll have a chance to be pretty good offensively.?
We?re not talking about a big-play guy here. "I would throw a
5-yard hitch in the scrimmage the other day and they would make
people miss and take it for 30 yards," Mauk said. "It's just
amazing the play of the receivers so far." Yeah, they did that
against their own defenders. Syracuse?s second-season head coach
is an ex-NFL and Texas defensive coordinator and for all the
offensive woes, his D has held up very nicely. No 5-yard hitches
for 30-yard gains here. Laying two scores with Wake vs.
power-conference athletes is asking for trouble.
Utah
Utah is getting about a field goal in this one, and that's just fine with me as the road dog is going to win this one outright. This is a role that Utah has thrived in over recent years as the Utes have covered 14 of their last 15 as a dog!
Utah finished solidly last season and absolutely blew out Georgia Tech in the Emerald Bowl. Now in his second season at the helm, coach Kyle Whittingham has a solid outfit in 2006 and his Utes will score and score tonight against this Swiss Cheese Bruin defense. UCLA was horrible on the defensive side of the football last fall and were equally bad at stopping the run and the pass. They finished ranked 115th overall in defense last year. Ouch!
And things don't look a whole lot better this year for UCLA, which gave up more than 468 yards per game last season. A rash of preseason injuries has forced Bruin coach Karl Dorrell to move some offensive players across the line of scrimmage to offer help in the secondary. UCLA will have a very difficult time stopping Utah's spread attack this evening. Utah passer Brett Ratliff finished 2005 on a roll and he has plenty of offensive talent around him.
A year ago, UCLA's strategy was to simply score and score and score and hope that its defense could come up with at least one or two stops a game. But the Bruins will take a major step back offensively this year with the losses of key players Maurice Drew, Mercedes Lewis and Drew Olson. Oh, and offensive coordinator Tom Cable has moved on, too.
UCLA has question marks at several offensive positions, including quarterback. Last year, the Bruins produced several comeback miracles, but that won't be the case tonight. Utah has a solid defense that returns plenty from a unit that ranked second in the MWC in both yards allowed and scoring. Utah, which has covered 21 of its last 25 as a road pup, will win this one outright by a touchdown!
