All the sad things that have happen do to this storm. And now based on rumors gas stations jumping prices 10/20 cents. This before any high priced gas has even gotten to them. Thats called screw the public. For sure when one hour they go up 10 cents and three hours late they drop it back. If it's really going to be as bad as they say because of this disaster. Time for your government to step in and set a level thats fair. I don't now if thats 2.75 or 3.00 bucks. But when you see prices over 2.75 your already getting screwed. The oil companies are not at record profit's because there being fair. And that was before they were handed this excuse.

I saw a report on CNBC the other day that said gas stations make around $0.01 per gallon of gas sold. I don't know how accurate that is, but it is much less than the $0.10 per gallon that the station I worked for used to charge (15 years ago).

I have always heard that gas stations always make their money on you going in and buying products out of their store. Gas is offered just to get you to stop.

In my opinion, I don't think the gas stations are screwing us.

You may be right it could be the good old middleman. But some guys jumping prices on speculation only is wrong. Lets hope it all goes well.

I agree on that. But I'll be the first to admit that I don't have a clue as to how the price is actually driven. The more I read, the more confused I become.

Believe me they dont want us to know. Its part of making the big bucks for the gas companies.

I have been told by owners of stations that their take is only 1-3 cents for every gallon. Now they may be lieing but thats what I was told from people I know in that business.

Dawgball, with all due respect thats a bunch of :bsflag that you saw on the news.

Have you ever wondered why Gas stations near the interstate have 5-10 cents higher prices than the ones in about a half a mile? Or have you ever wondered why when you drive up the street you always see the different gas stations charging a few cents different than the next one. It's because they want to make a profit. They all get the gas for near the same price when they are in the same proximity. While I am sure that they do not make too terribly much per gallon, the amount is still substantial and more than $0.01/gallon. Also, I believe what you said about most of their profits being made from selling to walk in customers is also true (i.e beer, cigarettes, candies, soda, food).

I saw the same info from a different report. It stated that they make .01c per gallon they sell. The article discussed that with the higher prices, the number of drive-offs w/out paying has increased. There was some ridiculous stat like for every drive-off they have to sell 20,000 gallons to offset the loss.

LOOK OUT THE SKY IS FALLING!!!!

I dont know why people piss and moan so much over freaking gas prices. Its NO DIFFERENT than any other damn industry in this country. How much do you think that $15 cd costs to make that you buy? How much do you think the parts in that $1500 computer cost to make? How about that $4 latte you buy every single morning, you think that really costs $4 to make? I dont see lot of threads about how the coffee companies are screwing the man. What is this communism, should The State step in and set prices on all the other industries that are making a buck.

People bitch and moan so much that the oil companies are making so much money, want to know something, so are A LOT of industries. Its called capitalism in a free market economy. Give me a break. The bottom line is that this storm really did a number not just on the oil production, but more importantly on the refining and transportation facilities.

At least do some reading on it....

Are you listed as a beneficiary on the will of some oil tycoon or something? You sure seem to get a real hard-on defending gas prices in this forum anytime someone complains.

No, I just dont know why people think gas is any different than any other product they buy or why they need to be hypcritical about it. Like I said, I dont see any threads about how Starbucks is screwing the public by charging $4 for a 25 cent cup of coffee, but people pay @ $45/gallon for coffee that cost a tenth of that.

So why not? Should the gas and oil companies be in business to be nice and not make a profit?

Exactly. And no one will let them build more refineries. People want more gas, they want more capacity, they want increased supply and cheaper prices. But tell them that youre going to build a new high tech refinery right down the road from their kids school or down the road from their home and the NIMBYists (Not In My BackYard) come out in full force.

OH Bullchit Ace

The reasons no oil companies don't want to build refinieries, because the refineries are not profitable for them. This is where our almightly president just needs to build government run refinieries to help the ciitizens. But that will never happen in his reign because then his partners in crime the oil companies won't make as much.

Don't blame the environmenalists on this one bud!

I'm not blaming environmentalists, it has nothing to do with that. Its every locality, every local government that doesnt want drilling or increased industrial presence in their hometown. This happens from Maine to California. Everyone wants the benefits nuclear power brings this country and our military, but no one wants the sh1t stored in their backyard. Same thing. Government run refiniries? Like I said, this isnt the Soviet Union. What would they do? March into a state/town, comandeer their land and build there?

Part of Bush's energy bill was to be to allow refinieries to be built on old military bases. Guess what? Local/state governments didnt want it, they didnt want to be told what to put there. They want more profitable things there like housing or consumer friendly businesses.

why do you think refineries are not profitable anymore?

It hasn't been for years, i work w/oil companies and have been told this many times over. If u don't believe me just ask someone in the business. It is very expensive to run and if it wasn't for the product having to go through the refinieres they wouldn't exist at all. I am telling u its need to be government runned.
