Long story short- haven't played a round of golf in about 8 years. I only played for a 4 year span while in school. I was pretty bad, but it was fun.

i'd like to get back into golf and get a little more serious. The main reason is that I'd like my two boys to pick it up at an early age. I think it would be great to be able to leave the electronic world behind and spend quality time on the links as we get older.

I do have a set of clubs I got used but they are pretty shitty. Here is my question- Since I pretty much suck at golf, I'd prefer not to go into the store to have them watch my swing because there's not much to watch. I know the typical answer is to get a set of used clubs, play, and then get fitted for good clubs.

What if I don't mind paying 1k-$1500 off the bat? Is this a major mistake or could I get really nice clubs that I can grow into regarding my skill set? If show, how should I break it down? Iron set, woods, drivers, sand and lob wedge, and putter?

Does anyone want to "build my bag" for me here with suggestions on the above? Open to any and all advice on the topic.

I would agree, Ping irons are pretty forgiving . I also like their putters, and Cleveland 52 degree wedge will complete the irons, do not start with 56 degree wedges.... Keep with the same manufacture with the 5,3 & 1 woods. Don't get adjustable woods, especially with beginning to play again....they are BS in my opinion. Hit different ones and decide on which ones you feel comfortable with. Taylor made woods are great, JMO.

Lastly, invest in lessons......Edwin watts has a good program. Since your learning this will give you all the information to pass along to you kids as dad teaches them the game as you improve your game. The most important lesson to learn in golf is to have fun..... Understand it is about the friendships and moments spending with friends and family playing this game that makes it special. GL :0008

On the course!
You can't buy your game.

You can get a decent set of clubs for under 5 bills. I wouldn't spend too much right away, because you might just chuck it after a few months. (you just never know).

You don't need to be fitted, either. You will learn how to use clubs off the rack just fine. Unless you have a ridiculous swing speed, regular shaft will be what you will buy.

Go to the driving range and putting green.

If you still love the game after a year, then you can think about investing some money on better gear.

You all realize that saint has zero intention of doing any of this. The entire thread was posted for one sentence that everyone was supposed to notice, how much fake money he was willing to pretend to spend.

That's it.

Just like when he falsely asserted that he performs oral surgery in hospitals a few weeks ago. He must have simply forgotten about all his other narcissistic posts about his general practice and not being able to screw patients on medicare.
Or like the time he credited himself as being the sleuth that outed some tout named Hannah as being a fraud. It didn't matter that several others had already posted that very thing long prior to him announcing how heavy a burden it was to be the greatest investigative mind on the board.

Saint: Find a place that lets you hit the clubs prior to buying. Ideally, it is a place where you can hit off the turf outside or at least an indoor facility with a shot monitor so you can feel and see the the results. Find a set of Game Improvement irons in the $400 - $600 range, test them out and go with what feels best. Find a Ping or Taylor Made driver for about $200. Don't spend a shitload on a putter, just find one that goes where you aim it. Make sure to get a 3 hybrid so you don't have to struggle with 3 and 4 irons.

I don't understand your point, but I do think golf is a great sport that you can play throughout your lifetime. It takes a lot of concentration so it helps you escape from the normal day to day. It sucks that it is an expensive retreat, but if you can afford it, it sure is a great way to get away from the day to day BS. For those of us that are competitive, it's a great outlet for that, since the USGA handicap system allows for all skill levels to compete against each other on a level playing field. Anything is better than sitting home and watching TV (even sports) or playing video games.

Buy your clubs off Craigslist.
You'll be the only call they get.
Offer less than half the asking price.
They'll be happy just to get rid of them.
Wanna' practice and play for free?
Make friends with a Mexican maintenance worker
and buy him a half dozen Taco Supremes.
You'll play more golf at that course than
a club member who got suckered for an
outrageous initiation fee and monthly dues.

Good advice from YYZed and WHN. Taylormade comes out with new technology so often that you can buy their top shelf irons from 6-8 months ago on ebay for 50-70% off. Spend 3-500 on a set a clubs and the rest on lessons for your kids

Reaching much, FDC? 10 years ago I would have come back here on Friday with a scan of the receipt when I go to golfsmith and purchase some new sticks.

Or I could print out a picture of your douchebag avatar and snap a picture this Friday AM when I have my first OR case and post here. I'm a pediatric dentist. Pediatric dentists take children to hospitals when they have massive amounts of decay and are too young to cooperate in an office. Since you are the type to do so, go to the AAPD website and look at the residency tab and learn all about our training. It does make me chuckle to think you believe I feel the need to misrepresent myself on here. For what?? Some fictitious internet world? HA!

And it's medicaid you dipshit, not medicare. Kids, not geriatrics. Either way, your attempts at attack are getting weaker and weaker.

Thanks for the advice. Talk to me about the hybrids- this is new to me.

Bingo.

We are a technology light house. I have zero games on my phone nor does my wife. My kids don't have ipads or game systems. They go play outside like kids need to do.

I never grew up playing golf. So it's painful and I'm the type to get self conscious. I wish I didn't give a shit but stepping up to the 1st tee I'm anxious because I don't want to embarrass myself. I've got to think that's common for newer golfers. I just want to get competent enough to where I can go when invited and be respectable enough to not embarrass myself. I've had to pass on a lot of time with friends because I can't play well enough.

That's the main reason I'd like to start my kids young. That way they at least have a feel for the game and don't have to feel out of sorts like I do.

And most importantly, when they get to be teens and they are wrapped up in their friends/gfs/phones- what better way to get some quality time than on a golf course where it's quiet and free from all the distractions.

Thanks to all for the advice.
