I have a question I was wondering if I could ask some of the good golfers in here.

There is this guy that I work with alot and he is a very good golfer. He shoots par and today he told me he only uses 1 ball the entire 18 holes.

He was talking about how good he was.

So before I could think about it I blurted out

I will bet you 1 thousand dollars that I can beat you if you give me 40 shots.

The worst part it was in front of other golfers.
I think some he plays with. And I know some of them.

He had one of the guys figure it up and it came to

7.3 shots a hole is what I would get.

That comes out to 131.4 shots for 18 holes

I havnt golfed in 2 years. I use my grandfathers clubs and they are pretty nice old ones.

I am pretty athletic for as old as I am but not much lately . When I am on I can hit it along ways on a driver shot maybe 240 or so.
But I am erratic as chit. Not sure where its going sometimes, but its out of sight.

And I am a good putter most of the time. I just try to get it close and tap it in.

Not to brag but I did get a lucky hole in one on a 3 par off the tee with a iron.

So it aint like it is my first rodeo.

Here is the question

Would I have any chance at all to beat this guy ?

I dont really want to back down,

I dont really want to go in from the start and not have a freaking chance at all.

See thats the kind of help I need

Not to let him set it up in his favor

Here is one I thought of

I get to choose the golf course. He point blank told me I dont care what course I play I am good.

So I will choose the course and he is not allowed to play it beforehand.

Meanwhile I am playing on it alot . I think its in May or early June.

I like that part

I am pretty sure with some practise I could shoot 120 on a course I had played on and knew.

Lets first establish that if anyone is willing to give you 40 shots then you are awful. The question is what are you least awful at. If you are more accurate with irons then only hit irons regardless. If short game sucks then putt everything around the green regardless. I am talking 20 yards off the green type of shots, putt them! At the least you are advancing it to the hole and not chili-dipping or skulling it. When in the sand dont get cute. Always blast it out and do not even go for the hole. Never try to make a putt of any distance just try to get it within 2 feet an any direction of the hole. Pick a course that doesnt penalize you for being in the rough as you are the only one that will be there anyway. Pick a course with slow greens as he is used to playing fast ones. Pick a course with little to no sand/water as you are the only one that will be hurt by this. The $ and pressure will probably cost you 10-15 strokes so if you cant break 100 on your course of choice doing the things listed, then you might want to rethink it.

wow thats good info

I admit I am awful but I think I am trainable.
I know this Pro at a club and I think he would work with me a few hours here and there.

I am best with my irons but not great. Espicailly when I am in the fairway. I might hit it 25 yds on a swing ? Short game sucks.

Bad habit of hitting over greens. Probably a weakness.

But I think its the quickest thing I could practise and get better in a short amount of time.

This friend of ours has a little girl who is taking chemo for a brain tumor. She has a foundation set up. Loser has a check ready to hand to him.

I doubt I could break a hundred. No way.

I have never .

The best I can see from me is 120

Hey this guy aint going to shoot par on a course he never played before.

He may choke some too and shoot 75

So if I go and play the course
and I can play a certain number.

But then I dont know what he is going to get

It seems kinda complicated

I need a course with no trees and bushs and not lakes around. I gravitate there and lose balls.

I need nice airy land . Room to roam

Are there any rules like waving hazard drops ?

I learned this in a movie. Move out to the desert and live in a camper at a driving range with a middle aged Mexicano. Have Susan Saranden show up for lessons. Drink a lot of tequila, and drive an old convertible cadillac.

Eventually you'll find your game but REMEMBER this, if youre out 236 and looking at water, whatever you do DON'T GO FOR IT.

Lay up, and the check is yours.

Best of luck to you.

PS

I also saw a movie where the guy punched hanging meat in a freezer and chased chickens. He didn't get a sexy girl in the end but he won the hearts of a city. I think it was Bull Durham but maybe it was Major League.... oh, and speaking of Major League, be sure to kill a chicken prior to the tournament.

Scott: What is the WORST part of your game? What is the most inconsistent?

We need to figure these two things out and either eliminate clubs or find another way. The part about using a putter off the green is what I'm referring to. Nicklaus did that because he just had no touch off the surface with wedges and irons. If you can figure out which club you are the best at consistently moving the ball forward with, understand what your average distance is, you can use that club for most of the round. You need to get as few clubs in your paws as possible so you are as confident as possible. Golf is mental and you need to believe you can make shots. Lets find a club "we know" and use it all over the course.

Now we are getting somewhere.

The worst part is driving. If I get ahold of it
I can slam it, but left and right alot.

So what iron should I use that will allow me to stay in the fairways and hit it the furthest. I have no clue about that. I would guess 2

I think I hit best with a 4 iron. But I do not have a good sense of how the clubs make it go high instead of far.

So if I am out 20 feet off the green on the fairway I use a putter ?

I was in Texas and golfing with my son who was getting married.

We were in a group of 8 ppl.

I get on the green and I slam it with all my might.

I hit it hard and it starts sailing into the atmosphere

that may go 300 yds

Uh Oh

It hooking hard to the right

Its going off the fairway, over these huge trees and we hear a window break.

and as Rolltide would say

We got a problem right here on hole 8

here is a question

Say on 3 or 4 holes I decide to take a chance with the driver and hit it long and far down the middle.

Wouldnt that be worth a few strokes to the better even if I lost the ball ?

Scott: We've got a lot of ground to cover.

Golf is about risk reward.

Let's say the average hole is 400 yards long. If you crush your driver straight, it goes 250 yds, but more often than not, you will be off to the left or right (possible lost ball, bad look at green, behind treeline). Lets say even when it hooks or slices it still goes 250 yds. You are always going to be 150 yds from the hole, but a lot of times, you're going to be in some sort of trouble. Now, lets say you can hit your 6 iron 165 yds, but it is typically straight 75% of the time.

Your goal is going to be making a 6 or better on this hole. Any ball that goes out of play, into a hazard, or behind a tree is going to make this goal unreachable. If you hit your 6 iron twice and that gets you to 70 yards out from the pin, you are in a great position to make your goal because you just need to get the next ball on or near the green and then make a 3.

You need to look at the strategy. This is the same thing you do when you buy points when betting. You are minimizing your risk. Golf is no different in that you need to forget about making the big pay day in favor of several small victories. Each time you advance the ball without putting yourself in trouble, you win a small victory. The shots add up when you take chances (using clubs with low accuracy, trying to hit over water, going for the green when you don't need to).

The people watching will put pressure on you for not using your driver, but that is just like the criticism from people telling you buying points is ignorant. You know your game, play it to your strength.

A great example of this: Every golfer on here has played with the little old man that can't hit it over 150 yards, but he hits it straight. That guy has beaten us time in and time out because most of us try to do things we're not really good at. The old man knows his capability, isn't worried about distance, and knows if he can get somewhere close to the green in two, he can probably have a shot at par. He limits his mistakes by not trying to be something he's not. If he tries to keep up with everyone else, he'll probably hit it further, but his accuracy will fall off and then he'll be stuck trying to dig his way out of trouble.

ANOTHER THOUGHT ON DISTANCE:
Scott: Your accuracy is going to be complete shit, so even if you pound a drive, your second shot probably won't be on the green. So, if you are going to need 3 strokes to get on the putting surface, what's the safest way to do so?
