the tree stump is a permanent obstruction ... look at it this way, what if it just rolled up to the base of a big tree?

one stroke penalty and drop within 2 club lengths no closer to hole OR go backwards as far as you want keeping the flag in line from the ball OR replay shot from previous location

If it rolled up to base of a tree. id hit it, righty or lefty. :popcorn2

I think between several saying one thing and only 1 dissenting vote in Reflog that you are trying to justify your bad decision to yourself in giving your buddy a free stroke and a break. Am I correct?? I am feeling this lost you the match as well as money. If you signed scorecards because of money involved then he signed an incorrect one, thus get your money back. If not, he should man up and prove a Gentlemen's game is just that.....a Gentlemen's game of integrity.

Tree was cut down with a saw, yes? Grounds crew didnt finish the job. If the tree was fallen via mother nature, different story.

The members here had the grounds crew build sand boxes around every green for their kids
to play while they're putting.
They never finished them, they're just pits with sand in them.

Do I have to hit out of the unfinished sand box

Was it marked Ground under Repair?
Are there any local rules stating that if your ball lands in a stump its a free drop?
My unprofessional thoughts are that if it wasn't marked and no local rules then its a drop with a penalty.

This is correct! Three options for relief but one stroke penalty.
