My employees know there are NO sick days. None! This is one of the first things I cover when I interview them. I tell them if they call in sick they better be calling from the hospital. I'm serious! Talk about pet peeves.

If a family member or your dog dies, call me immediately so I can found someone to fill in for you while you take the rest of the week off. That's the only excuse I go for.

Sorry. :0003

Do you let them surf the net while at work ? :0003

Jack, we couldn't agree more on this one. If I hire you it's because I expect YOU to do YOUR job everyday you are scheduled to do it. If you let me know in advance you need a day off I will find someone else to fill in for you and I would honestly say my batting average for doing that is over 98%. If you stick me on the day you are supposed to be at work I'm gonna be pissed and recommend you spend part of that day updating your resume.

If someone is sick with a contagious flu/virus/sickness - would you rather them come in to work and operate at 50% productivity and risk infecting the rest of your staff who will then be at 50% productivity or would you rather they just stay home that one day and be back full speed at work the next?

I hear you, and yes, in a case like that I would want them to stay home.

The job my people do is done only by the person scheduled to do it and I don't have replacements standing by. If they don't come in things don't get done. Others rely on these things so they can get their job done. It's important they show up when they are scheduled.

How many times have you felt perfectly fine going to bed and then are absolutely unable to make it to work the next morning? Very few I would guess. Give me the courtesy of calling me the night before so I can find a replacement and all is well, call off the day of your shift and it's a problem for me.

I expect people to show up for work, like I have for 25 years, never missing a day.

Take the day off as vacation  In 15 years at my job I have called in sick 1 time for myself being sick and I had 103.3 temperature, when kids were born I got 5 days off with each of them...stayed home with my daughter and son when they were sick about 5 times I believe

We get 15 days vacation per year and must use it or lose it

That is why I changed my employees "sick" time a year to personal time. Dont bullshit me. I was in that spot before, with the fake cough on the Wednesday before the NCAAs. If you have paid time off and want to take it, fucking take it. This isnt Ferris Fucking Day Off.

Time to work on cross-training people.
The business shouldn't hinge on a single person coming in or not coming in.
I fully hear you though - I have the same mentality.
It's not just a sniffle though - we used to call it the "hit by a train" example. You're coming in to work in the morning and get run over by a car/truck/train - who's going to do your job for you?

I would love to cross-train people and at least somewhat solve the problem, problem is the bean counters just won't fund something like that.

Hey, I'm actually more reasonable than it sounds, but I do expect people to show up for work if there is any way they can. I think employees have a responsibility to their employer in that sense, especially when I am crystal clear when I offer you the job that that is what the expectation will be.

I fully understand someone getting the flu and not making it in. The people I have no need for are the ones who seem to get the flu twice a month and always on Saturday. You know?

It's weird this topic was started yesterday and what happened to me.

My main man was a no show yesterday. No call, nothing. This guy has never been late, never called in and missed a day, is a jack of all trades which helps me a lot in certain situations, and he's very talented in what he does.

He has negatives as well. None of the other men like working with him, he complains and whines all the time, he's two-faced and is always talking behind other peoples' back.

He even talks behind my back.

I still like the guy and even have helped him financially. He owes me 4 figures in advances because he needed help for whatever reason.

We argue a lot because he's such a whiner.

We argued Friday when he called me saying he was done for the day because the other 2 guys were slacking. I made him stay and help them finish their work.

His last words to the other guys when they left the job Friday was "I will do what I want because Jack won't fire me, he needs me."

I might lose a few days or a week, but there is going to be some serious cross training (you are right, marine).

He got FIRED!

Doing that even blew my mind, his mind, and the rest of the guys minds.

I'm not dealing with bullshit. Tired of it.

Good job doing the tough but right thing. Next time you will be prepared to nip it in the bud when it starts. When someone thinks you are dependent on them they begin to take liberties. You can treat your employees well but they all need to know they are replaceable. Your other guys will probably step up their performance now. Asking for advances, frequent complaining, inability to get along with coworkers. All red flags, all things that will get worse with time. Staff is the biggest challenge for me. But each mistake I make gets smaller because I learn good lessons along the way.

I never have. I'm too paranoid. I'd LOVE to call off and go golfing, but I'm not willing to risk getting caught....and I'm not a piece of shit. I have called off when I've been physically hurt (back issue) but I still worked from home. Did the same a couple years ago when my throat closed up on me....I just don't want to be lumped in with the slackers.
