My employees know there are NO sick days. None! This is one of the first things I cover when I interview them. I tell them if they call in sick they better be calling from the hospital. I'm serious! Talk about pet peeves.
If a family member or your dog dies, call me immediately so I can found someone to fill in for you while you take the rest of the week off. That's the only excuse I go for.
Sorry. :0003
Do you let them surf the net while at work ? :0003
Jack, we couldn't agree more on this one. If I hire you it's because I expect YOU to do YOUR job everyday you are scheduled to do it. If you let me know in advance you need a day off I will find someone else to fill in for you and I would honestly say my batting average for doing that is over 98%. If you stick me on the day you are supposed to be at work I'm gonna be pissed and recommend you spend part of that day updating your resume.
If someone is sick with a contagious flu/virus/sickness - would you rather them come in to work and operate at 50% productivity and risk infecting the rest of your staff who will then be at 50% productivity or would you rather they just stay home that one day and be back full speed at work the next?
After a perfect 30 years you can't break THAT record.
I hear you, and yes, in a case like that I would want them to stay home.
The job my people do is done only by the person scheduled to do it and I don't have replacements standing by. If they don't come in things don't get done. Others rely on these things so they can get their job done. It's important they show up when they are scheduled.
How many times have you felt perfectly fine going to bed and then are absolutely unable to make it to work the next morning? Very few I would guess. Give me the courtesy of calling me the night before so I can find a replacement and all is well, call off the day of your shift and it's a problem for me.
I expect people to show up for work, like I have for 25 years, never missing a day.
Time to work on cross-training people.
The business shouldn't hinge on a single person coming in or not coming in.
I fully hear you though - I have the same mentality.
It's not just a sniffle though - we used to call it the "hit by a train" example. You're coming in to work in the morning and get run over by a car/truck/train - who's going to do your job for you?
It's weird this topic was started yesterday and what happened to me.
My main man was a no show yesterday. No call, nothing. This guy has never been late, never called in and missed a day, is a jack of all trades which helps me a lot in certain situations, and he's very talented in what he does.
He has negatives as well. None of the other men like working with him, he complains and whines all the time, he's two-faced and is always talking behind other peoples' back.
He even talks behind my back.
I still like the guy and even have helped him financially. He owes me 4 figures in advances because he needed help for whatever reason.
We argue a lot because he's such a whiner.
We argued Friday when he called me saying he was done for the day because the other 2 guys were slacking. I made him stay and help them finish their work.
His last words to the other guys when they left the job Friday was "I will do what I want because Jack won't fire me, he needs me."
I might lose a few days or a week, but there is going to be some serious cross training (you are right, marine).
He got FIRED!
Doing that even blew my mind, his mind, and the rest of the guys minds.
I'm not dealing with bullshit. Tired of it.
