The six Pool winners and two best placed runners-up qualify for the quarter-finals, thus eight teams in all.

The Pool winner will be the club with the highest number of Pool points within that Pool.

The runners-up will be the two clubs from all the six Pools with the highest number of Pool points.

The Pool winners will be ranked 1-6 in terms of the number of Pool points earned and the two runners-up will be ranked 7-8.

Teams ranked 1-4 will have home advantage and the quarter-finals will be:

Team 1 v Team 8
Team 2 v Team 7
Team 3 v Team 6
Team 4 v Team 5
If clubs are equal on Pool points, and the clubs are in the same Pool, then qualification/ranking will be based on the two matches played between the two Clubs. The winner will be:

i. Club which has earned most Pool points from two games
ii. Club which has scored the most tries from two games
iii. Club with best points difference from two games

If the matter is still unresolved, or the two teams have not played each other previously in the Pool stage, then qualification/ranking will be based on:

i. Number of tries scored in all Pool matches
ii. Points difference from all Pool matches
iii. Club with fewest number of players sent-off in Pool matches
iv. Toss of a coin

Simple isn't it?

The Semi Finals will be played at a venue designated by the ERC Ltd, with the opponents in each match determined by a draw conducted by the ERC Ltd. The final will be played at a venue designated by the company.

I have recently been made aware of a North American book (sportsinteraction.com) that accepts bets on Rugby Union. I am surprised I was not aware of this earlier, but this is great news, and should allow the North American readers to follow these plays easier.

I am not aware of what lines they have been coming up with, but I would definitely recommend opening a account with Bet365USA as well. Hopefully between the two books, it will allow the North Americans to use these books, and not have to open accounts in Europe.

Apparently Sports Interaction take bets on super league as well. Rugby League is another sport I successfully handicap, and when this season starts in March, I will have two threads running on both codes of rugby through to the end of the year.

However, in the short term we concentrate on nothing but this weekends games. Get those accounts open with the firms mentioned above. There are four days until gametime, which leaves plenty of time.

Check back around 23:00 PM (GMT) on Thursday evening, and 18:00 PM (GMT) for Heineken Round Five picks.

quick post for now:

2pt double Edinburgh (+7) and Llanelli (-8) both 5/6 Victor Chandler - London Irish without Venter and Everitt start looks too big to me but sadly now singles allowed so forced to double with the Welsh where hopefully their excellent home record will see them through

2pts Glasgow (+13) v Sale Paddy Power 10/11

will update record/other picks etc when time

hoss:)

Edinburgh vs London Irish (Edinburgh, 19:30GMT)

Although the Scots have no realistic chance of advancing to the next stage, I like the sounds that have been coming out of the Edinburgh camp this week. They are in determined mood to avenge their defeat in London, and on a freezing cold Scottish night, they have every chance of doing so. Their heavy defeat of Borders last week which enabled them to clinch the best team in Scotland tag, will boost their confidence ahead of tonight.
The English cup holders previous defeat at Newport, has put a huge dent in their chances of progressing as one of the best runners up. Their task tonight will not have been helped due to the fact they have some big game players missing, including South African Andre Venter. I think defeat here tonight here will help concentrate the Londoners efforts on retaining the English cup, as the Heineken Cup will no longer be a concern.

1 Point Win Edinburgh (+6) vs London Irish at 5/6 with Ladbrokes

I am not doubting that Sale are the better team here tonight. Their form in the hugely competitive Zurich Premiership is very impressive, and it remains the great 2002 Heineken Cup mystery as to why they cannot take their form into Europe. Still without a win after four rounds of Heineken Cup, they will look to to tonight as a ideal opportunity to get off the mark. The team seem in determined mood to prove their doubtors wrong, and the fact they have named their first choice team proves they are looking for victory here.
Glasgow are still in with a real chance of progressing. This game is their season in effect, and should they go down tonight, then their season is over, having created no impression in the Celtic League. Looking at the spread, it seems way too much for a team with everything to play for, playing a team already dumped out of the competition. This sole fact means that fourteen points should be well within their reach.

1 Point Win Glasgow (+14) vs Sale at 5/6 with Stanley

The french coached by legendary winger Phillipe Saint Andre have been one of the exciting teams to emerge this season. This previous fixture was a points bonanza with Llanelli conceding over fifty points to the French, having scored nearly forty themselves. They come into tonights game as top of their group and victory here will guarantee they progress into the quarter finals.
However, they come up against Llanelli, perhaps the club with the proudest tradition in the world. I watched the Scarlets last Friday night, and I have yet to witness such a complete team performance this year. They are starting to peak just at the right time. Their backline including a friend of mine in Matthew J Watkins, are coming together with ease, and as always their huge pack led by Welsh rugby legend Scott Quinell, will look to dominate. It is a cold cold Friday night here in South Wales, but Llanelli are sure to warm up the Welsh hearts tonight and go top of the group. A double figure victory beckons, so take the spread and run!!!

2 Points Win Llanelli (-8) at 5/6 with SkyBet

England, u.k.
Another great post crooky and the winners keep flowing and profit building.

I wasn't able to post in forum earlier as I was putting two threads together and I posted just before games started.

I played one game and that was Sale @ -11 points. They have good home form and Glasgow not at full strength I read some where on the web. I waited for your post but you were late submitting due to work commitments.

At least I got a winner, but not to confident when I read your post at kick off time. I do hate opposing you as you know Rugby is not one of my stronger sports, yet I seem to hold my own.

Speak to you very soon, regards
Derek

Toulouse 70-18 Newport

Perpignan 23-8 Munster

Two winners for Hoss, and a very very easy winner today with Toulouse.
Firstly I must apologise for the lack of write ups today. I have been busy in work, and have had other things keeping me occupied this week, so I have been unable to dedicate as much time as usual to this weekends matches. As it is I end up 3-1 on the weekend. Looking back, I regret playing Glasgow last night. As I said in my write up, the two sides are a class apart, but with Glasgow having so much to play for, I was expecting a closer show. It was impossible to predict that Sale would finally play to their capabilities, and blew away the handicap. However that heavy defeat was compensated with the very easy winner today with Toulouse.
For those looking to have a outright bet on the tournament, then I have to recommend Toulouse as my team to take the glory this year. As a value bet, dont waste any time and get stuck into a bit of Llanelli, who providing they can win home advantage in the latter stages of this tournament will be very difficult to beat. ;)

Anyway moving on to tomorrow, I think I may have something that can make it a 4-1 weekend with tomorrows match between Montferrand and Bristol. Check back through the night for the concluding play of Round Five.

Should also point out that the Neath game was postponed so no damage there either - Toulouse was my largest single stake of the season so far, so nice to have it wrapped up so early in the game :D

Same apology as Crooky for lack of write-ups, don't get time at this time of the week..:(

Anyway ?? is ??!

season now 16/25 balance +41.17pts

I like Toulouse outright too, but felt that at 5/1 with likely home advantage in the 1/4's Leinster looked the best value play each way.

no bet tomorrow for me (unless someone makes a good case ;) )

hoss

ps we'll have to stop posting the same selections it's just not natural....

Not sure if you are aware but Neath game is rescheduled for tomorrow afternoon with kick off due at 13:00 pm GMT.

You still playing?? Dodging this one....feel the handicap of about 8-10 points is about right for Beziers.

Any idea where I can see the Montferrand team?? Looked everywhere!!

Thanks for the Toulose pick guys. Of course they jack up the price after they see what you bet. I had to take -150 (4/6) at Paddy's but hey.....it was worth it!
