On October 14th I found out that my cholesterol was 255. Found this out while having blood work done for an upcoming colonoscopy. Since that time I have changed my diet and started exercising. I have now lost 34 pounds and just had my cholesterol checked again. I can't believe that I dropped it to 138. Now the Doctor wants me to add a little more fat back into my diet. Never satisfied. I sure feel a lot better with that spare tire missing from around my waistline.

congrats on the lowering of your cholesterol. i found out a couple of years ago i had high cholesterol also. mine was up to 297 and the dr. told me to start eating better, which is unbelievably hard, or i would have to go on medicine. for 6 months i ate mostly non fried foods and went back it was like 250-260 so she put me on zocor. since this time mine has settled to about 170 with the help of medicine. i don't watch what i eat or it would surely be lower. anyway, just wondered what you were eating? i hear that oatmeal is like the best thing. i hate oatmeal!

Tout, I have went almost fat free. I eat a lot of cheerios and oatmeal. I eat turkey instead of hambuger. Also try to eat lots of fiber. Fruit has also become a large part of my diet. He put me on crestor but I was having trouble with leg cramps so I quit taking it.

Congrats boilermaker!

As I write, I'm popping Visicol pills, 4 every 15 mins. I've got a colonoscopy lined up tomorrow morning at 730AM. I'm only 44 so I'm a bit nervous but the Dr. said he wants to be sure everything is OK. When he mentioned a "minor" possibility of colon cancer, I about crapped myself! 1st thing I think is my kids are going to be without their Dad and my wife will be w/o me(which I'm not too sure she be all the depressed about, but I digress).

My cholesterol was 255 with my LDL at 203 so I've gotten my wake-up call. I've lost 17 lbs already and am eating perfect! No more Crown Royal either! Not taking any chances. The Dr. also has me on Vytorin. He told me if I take these pills and eat properly I should see a 100 point drop in my LDL in a month. I gave blood yesterday and find out next Wed the results. I hope I have the success that you did.

It's a good feeling when you drop those lbs. Way to go!

:scared Time for more pills!

wow, congratulations, boiler!! That's awesome. If I were you, I don't think I would change anything since you are used to it now.

You also need to be cognizant of your LDL and HDL values. Do you know what those were? All my values are normal except for my "good fat" or HDL which is too low.

great job, BM. i did very similar. went from 244 to 206. went off the program in september and went steady back to 222 which held for about 2 months and just gained 8 more back in december.

definitely going BACK on the program the first of the year and am very confident it will go right back down.

just keep with it while you are used to it. once you go back to fast food, sweets, fried food, butter, breads, grease, etc, it's hard to get back on the program.

i'm pissed but it will come right back off, just have to wait until monday to start again.

congrats and STICK TO IT!

The truth of the matter is that high Cholesterol does not always indicate a fatty diet. If you eat a lot of the "Whites" (Sugar and flour) then those excessive carbs can indicate a high cholesterol total by raising your trigliceride level too high. Total cholesterol is a mathematical figure that combines the two cholesterol totals and the trigliceride level.

A lower carb diet where you replace sugar with substitutes and white flour with whole wheat flour will do amazing things for your high cholesterol total also.

A no Carb diet does you no good either- you need to mix some fats with smarter carbs.

A few years back, I was having some mild chest pains, I was 32, bad family history, my mother passed away from a heart attack at 40 so I went to the doctor. He came in and said my blood pressure was 190/110, my cholesterol was 492 and the triglycerides were 650. Basically a walking time bomb. Been on blood pressure medicine since which keeps me about 130/80. Did not go on cholesterol medicine but changed my diet and dropped it by myself down to 220, stay away from fast foods, fried foods and butter{which sucks giving that up}. Eat a lot of fish{which has omega 3 that reduces cholesterol}, chicken and garlic foods. I am 46 now and lucky enough to type this message, lol.

Good luck to you!

My god , can it even get that high?

I mean was there even room for oxygen to attach itself to blood cells. I dont even think that the Alaskan Pipeline is that dense.

i`m not a doctor(and i don`t even play one on t.v.),but,sometimes high cholesterol is hereditary......or so i`m told...

some of us need meds....that`s just the luck of the genetic draw.....

i couldn`t tolerate zocor or lipitor..felt like i was gonna die after taking them......so i tried crestor and had absolutely no side effects......the stuff is amazing...i don`t think my cholesterol`s been above 145 since i started taking it....and my good and bad cholesterol has fallen right in line(or so the doctor said)....

i get the liver and kidneys checked every 6 months....

crestor really works well for me...

btw...get that cholesterol checked dunclock...the meds are there for you....it`s pretty easy to take that extra precautionary step....

we want to keep you typing,brother...

Hereditary, EXACTLY, thank you dad for that one and the blood pressure, lol. But my Dad is a rocket scientist, 67 years old now and retired football official and still going strong. He has been on blood pressure meds for 30 years. We are both two of the most laid back, stress free people you would meet so it is not from being high strung and anxiety for the blood pressure or cholesterol. Just had an arteriogram in August and had 50% blockage but they want me to naturally break it down with exercise {doing some walking}, medicine, and stop smoking {New Years resolution}. Blockage in a bad place to do a stint and NOBODY wants open heart. Thanks for the good words and I plan on being around for a few more good years.

Taking meds is not a bad thing. Some of us need them. Garden weasel is rirght. If you need them they are out there. I have been taking high blood pressure med since I was 22 yrs. old. I have taken every test under the sun and the docs just say it's a chemical thing with my body. Keep healthy!

You're right about this, gardenweasel. Cholesterol is naturally produced in the liver and only about 15% is determined by what you eat. Some people could be vegans and still have high cholesterol. Ideally, a diet and lifestyle modification will lower it but some folks do require medication regardless of what they eat.

had a buddy once who when he was 22 years old was 5'8" and 150. His total cholesterol count was 500. He went on meds then and has been on them ever since through no fault of his own.

GW are you sitting down I agree with you. Crestor
no side affects for me either. Lipitor I swore was eating be alive. And by legs hurt like heck. Crestor even did better job for me. Lowered by total to 120. Lipitor was down to 134. And my good is way up. And with three stents in me that's important. In my case just weight lose 36# and exercise was not doing enough.
You mid age guys and up. For sure and even some of you young over weight guys. Should know your number. We have over 650000 deaths a year to heart troubles most caused by high cholesterol.
