MIAMI ? Barely 10 miles separate their training camps in South Florida, yet the lives ? and careers ? of middleweights Bernard Hopkins and Jermain Taylor have a more noticeable gap.

Nearly five years after winning a bronze medal at the 2000 Olympics, Taylor will try to do what 18 others have failed ? dethrone Hopkins from his middleweight reign when the two boxers meet July 16 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. "I?m supposed to be the next in line," Taylor said Tuesday, when he and Hopkins had open workout sessions in Miami. "He?s had his chance. Now it?s his chance to step down."

Little Rock?s Taylor overwhelmed his opposition leading to his challenge of Hopkins. However, the middleweight champion, who has held at least a portion of the 160-pound title and unified the crowns with victories against Keith Holmes, Felix Trinidad and Oscar De La Hoya, will loom as a difficult obstacle.

Despite turning 40 in January, Hopkins (46-2-1, 32 KOs) continues to defy age, having successfully defended his title 20 times. The Philadelphia native?s ninth-round knockout of De La Hoya made him the only fighter in the sport to hold all four major sanctioning body titles. "He has that advantage that he is 15 years or younger than myself," Hopkins said of the 26-yearold Taylor. "But I want him and the media to remember that he has used youth as his argument to win. And I want someone to remind [him] when he falls on fight night, that you?re still young, even though you?re not the champion."

Patrick Burns, Taylor?s trainer, said Taylor is focusing squarely on his training and not on what Hopkins is doing now. "Jermain stayed calm and reiterated that he is in great shape and feels ready," Burns said. "Bernard can say what he wants to say, and Jermain will quietly go about doing his job."

Taylor (23-0, 17 KOs) believes in the boxing adage of a fighter "aging overnight." He counts on his speed and talent to pose difficulties the likes of De La Hoya, Trinidad or Antwun Echols were unable to present to Hopkins. "Of course it?s a big fight, but I am not going to get too psyched about it," Taylor said. "I am faster, I am stronger than he is. I am just an all-around better fighter."

Hopkins, who has talked of retiring before he turns 41, believes Taylor has a future ruling the division but not during his watch. "Bernard Hopkins must accomplish what I have to do with this fight because it settles a big score with me," Hopkins said. "It sends a message that even though you all paraded the next heir apparent of the middleweight division, you might have to wait another five or six years before you find one.

" I want to set a high standard in the middleweight division that when I leave, a decade goes by, my name is still mentioned. That a person still hasn?t come up to accomplish 20 straight successful defenses. " Information for this article was contributed by Chris Givens of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.

CHILDHOOD DREAM: To always be a fighter. Always wanted to be champion. Started getting my reputation as a fighter in the streets. I used my talent the wrong way at first.

PRE-FIGHT FEELING: I think about all the hard training. Nine weeks. Concentrate on what I've been doing to get ready for the fight. I look at him. I look for fear. See if he's looking the other way or if he's looking down. Are his lips moving or is his ear twitching? One thing that helped me in my life is that I'd seen intimidation growing up. You cannot intimidate Bernard Hopkins.

FAVORITE MOVIES: Westerns, John Wayne and Clint Eastwood movies, Dirty Harry, Roman gladiator movies, Hercules movies, science fiction.

MUSICAL TASTES: Jazz, Miles Davis, soul music, Sade - me and my wife like her. The O'Jays, Patti LaBelle, soft music, some rap. If there's a good message in there.

FIRST JOB: Cook at Penn Tower Hotel in Philadelphia. In 1988 when I got out of the penitentiary. I was a great worker. When I first started boxing pro, the manager used to read about me in the paper.

GREATEST SPORTS MOMENT: I don't know. I got so many great moments, man. I can't tell you the greatest - you don't got enough tape, man. Everything's been a great sports moment for me.

MOST PAINFUL MOMENT: Can't answer that. Plead the Fifth, man [smiles].

WORST INJURY: When I got stabbed in '79 going to the movies with a female (age 13). On the subway. (Suffered) a collapsed lung, a scar above the heart. I was in the hospital for six months.

FAVORITE MEAL: Chicken or baked fish, pasta, linguini. But when you're a boxer you can't have a favorite meal. You gotta live healthy.

FUNNY BOXING MEMORY: Nothing funny in this business, man. Know what I mean?

PEOPLE MOST ADMIRED: People who overcome adversity. George Foreman, Tyson, Iran Barkley, people who you know where they came from. Anybody that comes from the inner-city and rises from that situation. James Toney. I could go on and on. Anybody that comes from adversity. I'll read it and know it's true. Because it's so easy to lay down. Lay down and say, I'm gonna rob a bank. That's an easy cop-out. But to say, I'm not gonna be like that...it takes a lot to do that when you have nothing in the refrigerator. It takes a lot. That's adversity. It's so easy to take the easy way out. It's so easy to lay down. It's so hard to get up.
.......................................................................

It will be so hard to get up is about right shortcakes.

I wasn't picking a fight with you and I can't argue with your play, but you could have got +152 at Pinnacle.

As I have mentioned a few times in this forum, Hopkins hasn't looked that good in his last 3 fights. DLH held his own for the first half of the fight before the obvious size difference took its toll. Eastman's punches were slow, long, and predictable, Hopkins should have dominated him but he did enough to win. He didn't impress me against Allen either, a very ugly fight.

However
Taylor is relatively untested and doesn't have big fight experience to fall back on when the nerves kick in. I have heard Taylor speak quite a few times and he doesn't seem very bright to me. Hopkins might look like a thug, but he's extremely inteligent in the ring. Only Toney has ring smarts like Hopkins, he knows all the tricks both legal and illegal and he will use all of them against a green Taylor. Hopkins has big fight experience.

I'm still riding the fence, brains or brawn.

Taylor has been brought along slowly. And thats what it takes to build up to a fight like this.

Who wants this most is pretty evident.

he will be fighting a 40 year old and close to retirement and make him a ex champion.

Box, as far as being intelligent and/or articulate, we all know about Winky Wrights talents but have you ever listened to him during an interview? Not exactly a super nova. Zab Judah wasn't ever going to imitate Stephen Douglas either, but has improved. Taylor may not sound like a rocket scientist, but I don't think that means he isn't a true talent at middleweight. Hopkins concerns me because he is so cunning it's scary. Sets traps and sucks guys in consistantly. I read an interview with Jeff Lacy and he explained how he would approach Hopkins in a fight. So far he is the only guy I've ever heard break it down to the letter. I don't believe Taylor will cave in under pressure here. He just may get outsmarted though. Bernard is the 3-card Monte king. Taylor, to me, is surely a "live dog" here at any rate. Look foward to your final decision.

1) I never said Taylor wasn't a true talent

2) Exactly

3) Exactly

Inside the ring Hopkins is one of the smartest fighters ever.
Taylor might not be mentally ready for a chessmatch with Hop this early in his career.

Its not the way Talyor talks, its what he says that makes me think he's not real bright.

As I said in previous threads, this fight has too many variables that may or may not influence the outcome.
Will Hopkin's age finally catch up to him? Is Talyor smart enough to beat Hop?

There are too many unknowns in this fight, so I probably won't play it.
But a small play on the underdog at +150 might be worth a shot.

I think it is rude and improper forum ettiquette
to address BOX in my thread about a fight I have
already played a winner on.

Geezz I thought the Off the Wall forum had more class than that.
