From the pictures I've seen of Kody and the care and love you show him, he'd be the only dog with a private room and a personal nurse. Lol.
I just have to say again, I am truly humbled by the support and kindness received here. I have no words to describe how much it means to me.
I did do a good deal of studying last night on the procedure which is called a TPLO. It's basically a bone graft and rebuild of the ACL. I was very disappointed in it as it does not really provide any additional support nor prevent it from happening again. What is the most compelling is that recovery time is 8-10 weeks crated constantly, which is about the same amount of time for it to heal, albeit not properly but certainly functionally, and the pain from the surgery is acute for almost two weeks. The cost has not been a consideration to me until I read all this. I'm neither wealthy nor poor. I'd have to work for it and save for it, but I'd spend it without hesitation on any of my dogs. However, I do have to consider the value of it if she's not going to be any better off in the long run. Everything I've read and been told by those here that have been through this, she will most likely have a shorter recovery time without surgery. What's even more crazy is they can't even get her in for almost a month! At this point I'm very hesitant to have her half way to recovery only to put her right back into another painful recovery cycle.
Wrigley does not do well at the animal hospital or being boarded. She becomes instantly stressed and withdrawn and will certainly suffer mentally from the ordeal. It's an unfortunate by-product of her situation in her youth. She was mauled then completely wrapped in duct tape from head to toe, put in a cardboard box, and the box taped up and left in the Walmart parking lot. All this after being used as a bait dog at a fighting farm. So though she has proven to be far more resilient than I could ever be, I'm extremely hesitant to be the one to put her in a situation that would ultimately terrify her.
So that's where I'm at with all this now. Not surprisingly I'm sure, it took a long wordy response from me to say it. .......lol.
Once again, I can't thank you all enough for the responses. They really lifted my spirits and most importantly provided me some great insight into my decision. I would totally give you all a pig ear treat to chew on if you were here. .....you're awesome people! I'm just really humbled right now.

My advice;
have the dog put down humanely, go pick another one up free of charge from the local dog shelter. I like dogs too and hate to see any animal suffer?.just have a sense of perspective.

Dogs, like every other living thing, are completely subjected to the will of us humans. Dogs simply cannot be "better" in any way than a human being.
But that's OK. That doesn't mean we shouldn't be kind to all animals and compassionate. From a perspective of evolutionary biology, it simply means that nothing can be "better" than a human being.

FDC,,,when I was around 7 my dad raised labs,,,It had gotten cold one night and he put hay and a light in the dog house for them,,As bad luck would have it the hay caught on fire killing 4 pups. He was destroyed as was I. I have never wanted another pet from the hurt I felt even at 7. Good luck with yours.
