"Sam Stone" (1971) "There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes/ Jesus Christ died for nothin' I suppose/ Little pitchers have big ears/ Don't stop to count the years/ Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios."

"Paradise" (1971)
"And daddy won't you take me back to Muhlenberg County/ Down by the Green River where Paradise lay/ Well, I'm sorry my son, but you're too late in asking/ Mister Peabody's coal train has hauled it away"

"Hello In There" (1971)
"You know that old trees just grow stronger/ And old rivers grow wilder every day/ Old people just grow lonesome/ Waiting for someone to say, "Hello in there, hello."

"Sweet Revenge" (1973)
"Through rock and through stone/ The black wind still moans/ Sweet revenge/ Sweet revenge/ Without fail"

his early stuff

Sam Stone[/COLOR]
John Prine

Sam Stone came home,
To the wife and family
After serving in the conflict overseas.
And the time that he served,
Had shattered all his nerves,
And left a little shrapnel in his knees.
But the morhpine eased the pain,
And the grass grew round his brain,
And gave him all the confidence he lacked,
With a purple heart and a monkey on his back.

There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes,
Jesus Christ died for nothin I suppose.
Little pitchers have big ears,
Don't stop to count the years,
Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios.

Sam Stone's welcome home
Didn't last too long.
He went to work when he'd spent his last dime
And soon he took to stealing
When he got that empty feeling
For a hundred dollar habit without overtime.
And the gold roared through his veins
Like a thousand railroad trains,
And eased his mind in the hours that he chose,
While the kids ran around wearin' other peoples' clothes...

There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes,
Jesus Christ died for nothin I suppose.
Little pitchers have big ears,
Don't stop to count the years,
Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios.

Sam Stone was alone
When he popped his last balloon,
Climbing walls while sitting in a chair.
Well, he played his last request,
While the room smelled just like death,
With an overdose hovering in the air.
But life had lost it's fun,
There was nothing to be done,
But trade his house that he bought on the GI bill,
For a flag-draped casket on a local hero's hill.

There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes,
Jesus Christ died for nothin I suppose.
Little pitchers have big ears,
Don't stop to count the years,
Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios.

He played at a lot of small venues in the panhandle of Florida, I never was into his music as I never liked Dylan either....... To each their own. Just not my kind of music... Sorry to hear of his passing :0008

Songwriters: John Prine

One of the all time greatest songwriters.
Saw him live 6 times, the last in 2018 when he was obviously having some health issues. When I heard he?d been admitted due to having COVID-19, I knew the outcome wasn?t going to be good.
This one hurts a lot. One of my all time favorite artists.
R.I.P, John Prine [emoji26]

I listened to the albums and they just didn't move me in the way, say, John Prine does. His is just extraordinarily eloquent music ? and he lives on that plane with Neil Young and Lennon."[51]

Sad day indeed.

Old school, indeed, my friend :mj07:

First show for me was in 1982. 17 years old and soon to be a senior in high school. Older cousins were into him and my family was visiting them in Minneapolis in?I think it was July? A friend of theirs backed out and they had an extra ticket. I was into hard rock and punk at the time but I went anyway. I liked the show, but it took me another 5 years before I really got into his music.

Most likely we saw the same tour if you saw him In April of ?18 as we saw him in June of that year.
