I hadn't either.

John Prine wrote and recorded ?Paradise? which was a little community in Muhlenberg County that was ?hauled away by Mr. Peabody?s coal company?. The everely Brothers recorded it a few years later. That?s what I always think of when I hear/see his name. He has Kentucky roots even though he wasn?t born there.

His parents were both from Muhlenberg County.
He was born and raised in the Chicago suburb of Maywood. After serving in the Army, he returned home and was a postman before being ?discovered? by Kris Kristofferson, but Prine used to say it was film critic Roger Ebert who was responsible for his career as he wrote a glowing review after seeing him perform.
He was friends and performed with Steve Goodman in and around the Chicago area. Goodman wrote many country music songs that became huge hits after being recorded by numerous artists such as David Allen Coe and Steve Earle.
