So ban music, movies video games all of it, but lets keep the guns.

Weird Al did several heavy metal parodies.

I don't think that is what I said.

Hey bro good question. To take it even a step further why is it that the four mass shootings in Australia prior to gun reform were white males as well.

I have a theory as to why but it is only my theory but it makes sense to me and I really do try to look at things deductively but one person's reasoning is always questioned when that theory isn't what another wants to hear.

I believe it has a good deal to do with cultural norms and practices in society that are distinctly different between races and genders. Upbringing and environment are key. A young white male child is afforded far more legal leeway than blacks. A black parent that was brought up in the U.S. is far more likely to experience discrimination and racism while whites experience privilege. A young black kid playing with an airsoft gun in a park was unceremoniously gunned down by police in an instant. Nicholas Cruz, tr Unabomber, Timothy McVeigh, and so many mass murderers were taken alive and with out much bodily harm to themselves. Michael Brown was gunned down for jaywalking and while his lifeless body was still laying in the street, the police department not only released his juvenile record which is supposed to be sealed but made up a fake story about a robbery that never happened. By the time his bloody body was even mercilessly covered by a sheet after four hours laying in the street while his mother was restrained and not even allowed to approach her son the narrative was already all over the news calling him a thug. You ever notice that white mass shooters are always termed as mentally ill but never a thug.
So as a black parent that's lived through all this and with the president now who most certainly promotes white nationalism and populism so much so it has empowered long term white supremacy and privilege it truly makes sense to me that there's a much more distinct set of behaviour and dire circumstances being taught to their sons and daughters that we as white people do not do. What I mean is this, if Nicholas Cruz was black and there were 18 separate complaints made to police about his threatening to shoot up schools and mental instability do you honestly believe he wouldn't have been dealt with differently?
Do you think of he was black he would have been termed mentally ill or a thug?
Look at the black lives matter movement, the first thing our society did rather than even attempt to listen to their grievances was to diminish their message and marginalize their efforts. First we diluted the charter by pitching the all lives matter rhetoric. Nobody ever said only black lives matter, they never did, but by diluting the original charter which white America bought into with all lives matter we effectively suppressed their message.
So I think black and minority parents can readily point their children to so many incidences of far more dire consequences enacted upon blacks than whites that their kids are far more aware that they're much more at risk for even owning an assault rifle or anything else while white kids can plainly see that other white kids shooting up schools become famous.

I can put forth hundreds if not thousands of instances where systemic discrimination and racist beliefs delegated legislation.

When a contingent of black panthers armed with assault rifles marched in protest in California I believe, then governor Reagan had an assault rifle ban in place in a matter of weeks.

Unfortunately, white privilege and white domination is so prevalent and so completely dismissed as a non entity in our country that not only will most whites will not even entertain the notion as even possible and get rather irate when it's even mentioned.

Think about this, Trump's tag line is make America great again. If I'm a black man, I'm truly offended by that. What "great" American era is Trump referring too because slavery only ended three grandma's ago. Civil rights were one grandma so what "greatness" does he mean because I can't honestly see where it's ever been great for African Americans

Scraps argument and viewpoint is very similar to a white mother in the 1980's.

Not really. If a sick kid puts the head phones on and has Death Metal cranked up to 12 for 16 hours a day is a lot different than a normal kid listening to Pink Floyd while doing his homework.

How'd that work for Syd Barrett?

Or, what about the kid doing homework to death metal, while the sick kid cranks Dark Side of the Moon?

Some people sound so old and cranky and out of touch in this thread. Every generation gets old and bitchy. Nothing special about this one or the last or any. And one day these young rouble rousers will grow old and sound just like Stevie.

Do not say, "Why were the old days better than these?" For it is not wise to ask such questions.

Yeah maybe the LSD had something to do with it.

I am not saying my type of music is ok and you better not listen to that other stuff. Look. Some people can eat a donut for breakfast, have a milk shake with lunch, have dessert after supper and not gain a pound. Other people not so lucky. What I am saying is that everyone has a different tolerance to things.

I can bet every day, so far it has not caused me any problems. Other people cannot handle it.

The same goes for music. Some people can listen to it and let it go. Others not so much.

You take a kid under 4 or 5 Prescription drugs and he puts the head phones on and cranks it up for 8 hours a day....well maybe he can't handle it.

I would like to see the list of Prescriptions this Nikolas Cruz is on and have his provider explain why he is on each. That might open some eyes.

I am old and cranky that is true.

HERE ya go these nut jobs have been provoked by this music

For the unitiated, death metal emerged from heavy metal in the early 1980s with the likes of Mercyful Fate and Britain's Venom, although the genre's obsession with the devil/Satan is obvious to anyone who's ever read Kerrang! or seen a Black Sabbath or Iron Maiden album cover.

The Ipswich/Colchester band Cradle Of Filth released their debut The Principle Of Evil Made Flesh in 1994 with eight other studio albums following. Although the anti-metal music press would deride the whole genre as pantomime for teenage boys there's no denying the power of the music - all piledriving guitars and vocals forged in some dark dungeon in Dracula's castle.

So there's the (tongue-in-cheek?) British version .... and then there's Europe. BBC2's This World programme Death Metal Murders (Thursday 24th November 2005) looks at the extreme end of the music and its followers in Norway and Italy.

Of the young heavy metal fans in this picture,
c584e8144062f7cd4935e2d88960273afa2619d1.jpg
three are now dead; four are on trial charged with murder; one is serving 19 years; two more of their friends are serving long prison sentences. They were called the Beasts of Satan and their story has gripped Italy for more than a year. This World asks how much did their addiction to satanic Death Metal music influence their descent into torture, sacrifices and murder?

?No-one can contradict me when I say that Heavy Metal and Satanism are closely linked. They go hand in hand, they?re inseparable. I say this without the shadow of a doubt,? says Michele Tollis, father of Fabio, who was murdered in a Satanic ritual by the Beasts of Satan. Michele has become something of an expert in the genre, having attended more than 80 Heavy Metal concerts during a six year search for his son which culminated in the discovery of the body last year.

The film also travels around the world, from Milan to Oslo to California, investigating the bizarre underground scene that is Extreme Metal music. We interview the extraordinary musicians ? from Glen Benton of Deicide (who has an upside down cross branded into his forehead) and Necrobutcher of Norwegian Black Metal band Mayhem, to a Capuchin monk who struts the stage of a Metal festival in Northern Italy roaring out Heavy Metal songs, to self-confessed Swedish Satanists Dissection.

?Bleeding on your knees/ My satisfaction is what I need/ The urge to take my fist/
And violate every orifice/ You're nothing/ ?Beaten into submission/ Raping again and again.?

:scared

These are the lyrics of Sex. Murder. Art. - a 1995 track by American band Slayer, who have sold millions of albums around the world. They and other Death Metal bands sing about rape, torture, necrophilia, murder and Satanism. Over the years, this type of music has been blamed for driving teenage boys to murder and suicide. The parents of Elyse Marie Pahler took Slayer to a California court in a failed attempt to ban the sale of this kind of music to children, after their daughter was murdered by Slayer fans obsessed with Satanism.:scared

And yet the concerns persist. According to Don Roberts of Stanford University, it is not the majority of kids we should be worrying about.

It?s the kids who already have problems with violence or depression who perhaps should be kept away from Death Metal. ?What the music may well be doing is simply reinforcing beliefs that they might have started with in the first place, and building on them and justifying their world view,

legitimizing the way they feel. The lyrics are violent, they lyrics are misogynist, the lyrics are depressed and depressing, the lyrics are satanic, they talk about suicide, they talk about self-mutilisation. The very kinds of things we?re worried that these problem kids will get engaged in.?

This appears to be born out by the experience in Norway. In the 1990s, more than 40 Churches were burnt down by followers of Norwegian Black Metal (a fusion of Satanism, Norse Paganism and noise). State Prosecutor Bjorn Soknes interviewed many of the arsonists and found they had a lot in common.
?They were young, 16 to 22, they were lonely people. Many of them told us they were listening over hours to black metal music before they burnt churches.?

Yet the hysteria that the Church burnings produced ? it is still something of a national obsession in Norway - has only served to spread the gospel of Black Metal around the world. Bands like Britain?s Cradle of Filth sell hundreds of thousand of albums.

Scrap, you might want to check out Varg Vikernes and his accomplishments...

And while at it check other nice bands: Kvelertak, Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth and so on.
Opeth might be one you actually like (really).

And here is tool for you: just type a band you like and it shows more similar bands:

How about being taught how to kill at an early age? How about the TV shows? I say no to all of it. When you are mentally psychotic you are mentally psychotic regardless. People who get voices in their head are getting them even if they listen to Jim Neighbors all day

I personally believe that if you think music and video games are to blame for mass shootings by kids.....then you are disconnected from reality and only have a Fox News/CNN window in which to view the world.

I've played tons of Madden in my time and weirdly I've never had any ambition to play in the NFL.

How INSANE?!?!?!?

Great reply FDC. This opens up a whole new can of worms. I do not look at Trumps Make America Great Again as being racist in any way. I do remember a time when America was the greatest country in the world. Now, I say that as a white man, but it was us older white men, I am 65. Who fought with the blacks in the 60's, to end segregation and try to make things right. Now we are told we are racist and sexists every time we turn around. But that is a whole other subject.

Yes it is interesting isn't it that these Mass Murderers get taken alive. Makes me think.

I do think that Black Lives Matter is a racist organization. But we are getting away from the point of the thread.

Great post

Cheers sir,
You are a dozen years older than I, so there is a small gap that I was too young to remember between us and I do recall my younger years to be a simpler less politically aggressive time. I also remember being in school during desegregation of the Chicago schools. Racial tensions from some were likely never really resolved i suppose for some people I don't know really. I think there are certainly those that take the whole "racist" thing to far and some seem a bit too sensitive to it
