Notwithstanding the proximity to the U.S. Open, The Kemper Open and TPC at Avenel are an event and venue that usually escaped my radar before golf outs on the internet found me and I found them. Nondescript all the way. Woburn, too. With that dynamic I expected very little this week, but Thursday instead arrives with a decent feeling about my card, always hoping for better informed and even more confident opportunities after the week is underway.
OUTRIGHTS:
Phil Tataurangi (40/1 for 0.30* e.w.@ Bet365)
I see enough dynamics in Phil's profile to make him an interesting bet to bust through here for the first time, or to contend along the way. What I really decided is that the fumes from a fine final Sunday pairing with Nick Price make him a live choice to start well on Thursday.
Stuart Appleby(28/1 for 0.30* e.w.@ Olympic)
I'm at least 0-3 with Appleby in posted and unposted matches during the season, so now he earns my money as an Outright selection. Stranger things have happened, but not usually to me. Maybe he is trending well toward the Open.
MORE OUTRIGHTS:
In the last three weeks I have had a piece of Maruyama, Toms, Faldo and Singh, while dancing around several others during the last four weeks that would have paid as well or better. I would feel remiss if I didn't punch the accelerator just a little.
Allen Doyle(10/1 for 0.30* e.w.@ Bet 365)
I was leaning to Doyle, and was sold when Stanley noted the connection between certain golfers and various or specific celebrity events.
Morris Hatalsky(16/1 for 0.30* e.w. @ Bet365)
I was asleep at the switch last week when I heard the touting about the linemaker's mistake. I'm not too proud or too dense to scrounge about the scene for any residual value.
Justin Rose (25/1 for 0.30* e.w. @ Bet365)
My initial take was that having some idle hours last weekend would have this now finely maturing golfer determined to earn some cheers on home soil (albeit transplanted home soil). For the VERY little it's worth, I was similarly determined after Justin confirmed my thinking with this post at his website: (28 May, Woburn) "Arrived here yesterday after my 'weekend off' and the game is in good shape. I'm not sure what happened last week - I drove the ball well, which is what you need to do at Wentworth, but just not seem to get the luck you need sometimes on a golf course. This week I am staying at Ian Poulter's house, which is five minutes from the course and my grandparents are across from South Africa to watch too, so everything off the course is sorted! Hopefully I'll do better this week as I seem to have underperformed in tournaments in England - maybe because all my mates are watching - so hopefully this week I can focus on getting the job done."
And a $2 parlay on Stricker(40/1) and Leaney(50/1) e.w. @ Bet 365. Leaney was circled on my card, and Stricker made it to my final cut. You heard it here last.
Still finalizing my slate of matchups . . .
