This post pertains to all cities and towns sans New Orleans.

Why do people like going to restaurants and listening to some local band? I get it if you know people in the band. But I have heard people seek out a bar or restaurant that has a live band.

I say this, because I have had the misfortune of stumbling into a band at a nice restaurant or bar many times. Too many times and not one band has been worth a shit.

How can a restaurant owner justify paying 500 bucks for a shit local band when people would be just fine without it.

To each his own. If you don't like live music or only like mainstream music that gets played on top 40 radio then I can see why that wouldn't be your thing. I do like live music and enjoy finding new bands to listen to other than what the radio tells me is worth listening to.

Yep, some of those bands end up not being very good, sure. There is good reason a restaurant, club, bar owner would pay the $500 to get live act and it's because people (maybe like me) who are going out on a certain night will go somewhere there is live music as opposed to a place where there isn't.

If it isn't your thing, it just isn't your thing. I can't for the life of me understand why people would spend hours reading a fiction book. Why would you give up all that time out of your life to read about something that is just never going to happen and has no bearing on the real world yet Barnes and Noble's sells a zillion books an hour. Again, to each his own.

I sat here thinking and I don't recall ever seeing a live band in a restaurant. Maybe a bar/restaurant. I've been to restaurants where a guy is quietly playing a piano or a woman playing a harp. A local rock band at a restaurant runs me right the fuck off.

A little different, but many of the freebies in Las Vegas on Fremont are really good. That's one reason I prefer Fremont over the strip along with several other reasons.

Nick, also, imo the local band situation in Nashville where I'm guessing u might have been is horrible. For being the home of country music, I have never happened on a band that I could tolerate. I have left places I was going Bc the band was so bad. The worst place ever are the lounges/restaraunts at the Nashville/BNA airport. I have to get Auntie Anne's bc of those terrible people strumming guitars and singing country horribly. Unbelievably bad.

I have seen them where there is a bar slash restaurant. Last time I saw one was when I was in Florida and was eating at a Crab Shack and they had a band setting up to play.

There is a reason they are playing in a bar/restaurant and not signed to a label. So is this the mentality.....

Gonna go out on a limb here, I would say 80% of bands suck that get a gig at a bar.

Whether it's non-fiction or fiction - reading makes you more intelligent.

Either way - I respect your opinion. :0008

Not bitter. Like I said, to each his own. Sure, most of the bands aren't great but that doesn't mean they automatically suck. Playing an instrument, well, in front of others is not the easiest thing in the world. I've tried to learn to play guitar and I'm just not very good at it. I still play/practice most days but I have earned a great deal of respect for those that can do it well.

As far as reading, I agree. I actually read a relatively decent amount. I just don't read fiction as I prefer books that teach me something or a biography of someone I admire. Fiction just doesn't do anything for me.

Not for nothing, but every band was once a small time local band.

I have friends that specifically like to go to places with live bands. It's not for me, but it's what they like. I'm sure bars and restaurants know there are a lot of people that dig it, so they pay people to play. If it wasn't working they probably wouldn't do it. I'm with you Nick, I don't get it. They're always horrible.
