I've seen The Rolling Stones, Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters, Albert King, Nathaniel Ratcliffe, Lou Reed, Aerosmith, the Hives, Pearl Jam, Cake, Rage Against the Machine, Bush, and Grace Potter live in bars. Most doing an after show set somewhere. Oftentimes at the metro and I'm sure I've forgotten a few.

I like live music, some bar bands are good others, not so much. They're always better than the alternative, a deejay playing fucking 80s music.

Maybe it's different where all you guys live, but in my area most bands playing at a bar/restaurant aren't making anything unless there is a cover charge or the band passes the hat during breaks.
I know many men and women that play in local bands in all genres of music except rap and they all do it for one reason and one reason only-- they love playing live and thrive on giving the audience a fun time while they are eating/drinking/dancing.
Are most of them mediocre at best? Yes, they are. Do all but a few understand their limitations and do the best they can? Yes, they do.
This is coming from a 50-something dude who's friends that play in bands are close to my age.
I'm sure it's a totally different mindset for a bunch of 20-somethings, just as it was for my friends 30 years ago.
