Swann closes in on GOP nomination; vote is Feb. 11
Associated Press

MONROEVILLE, Pa. -- Former Pittsburgh Steelers star Lynn Swann appears to have locked up enough support to win the Republican Party nomination for Pennsylvania governor.

In the last regional GOP meeting before state Republicans meet to endorse a candidate, the NFL Hall of Famer on Tuesday picked up 33 unofficial commitments from party representatives. If they all follow through, he will have just over the 180 votes needed to win the party's official endorsement on Feb. 11.

Swann, 53, is seeking to become Pennsylvania's first black governor. Though he has revealed little about his political philosophy, he has said the Democratic Party has "taken the African-American vote for granted."

Supporters say his high profile and charisma make him the best candidate to take on Democratic Gov. Ed Rendell, who is expected to seek a second term.

Swann's leading opponent for the GOP nomination, former Lt. Gov. Bill Scranton, 58, has sharply criticized Swann's qualifications and promised to stay in the race through the May 16 primary with or without the party's backing.

Scranton's deputy campaign manager, Mike DeVanney, sought to downplay the significance of the straw voting Tuesday. "This was a divided caucus. There's not clear support for Lynn Swann's candidacy," he said.

Swann was a wide receiver for the Steelers from 1974-83 and led his team to four Super Bowl victories. After retiring from football, he worked as a commentator for ABC Sports, which along with ESPN is owned by Disney.

Why not ? If He does nothing, He will out perform 90% of the politicians in the world. Who cares ? How many people do you think will actually turn out to vote. Most Americans don't vote, so this election like most of the rest will not bring change and will have no substantial effect on the big picture.

If morons like Jesse Ventura and George Bush can be elected into higher office, Swann is a shoo in.

I'm all for any new blood into the system, we need more people like Ventura and less like Bush. This is not a party thing with me. Look at where we are. Is there anyone out there, that likes what we have allowed these two parties to perpetrate on our Country ? To many of the few that vote FALL INTO THE TRAP, yes the trap that is set by these two parties. The buzz words and the hot topics are holding us back. Like Dr King said,he may not get there with us, he made a sacrifice; You, I, and others will have to make ours. I'm not talking about race, I'm not talking about party, I'm talking about what will set us all free. Do the right thing for you and your family and the guy that lives next to you. All this other stuff is just BULL SHIT. G Bush & The Clintons are a refection of us. I don't care what party you come from. you can't be proud. Stop wasting time and breath on these two losers.

Most of us will never be part of any solutions, because we see others as to liberal or to conservative or uncle toms. I can only guess that Swann doesn't think the way weasel would like him to,so this makes him an uncle tom. I have to suggest to Mr Weasel that not all people of any race think the same. I will also say that whether you are white or black you have issues to be resolved. Uncle tom ? What is an uncle tom?
