Pet Hippo Seized From Man's Yard
Tue May 28, 10:23 AM ET

SAN DIEGO (Reuters) - California fish and game officials are investigating a San Diego-area man who kept a rare 500-pound pygmy hippopotamus as a pet in his suburban backyard for at least a decade, a newspaper reported on Saturday.

Surprised state officials seized the female hippo, believed to be 12 to 15 years old, from Arthur Stehly, a resident of Escondido, who has more than 100 animals living on his property, including emus, peacocks, geese, goats and ducks, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune.

"I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it," state game warden Zeke Awbrey told the newspaper. "No one expects to find a giant hippo living in someone's backyard."

The newspaper reported that officials were investigating Stehly for allegedly not having a permit to own a hippo. It said officials seized the animal in late January after a tip from a real estate agent showing a nearby home.

Neither the hippo's owner nor fish and game officials could be reached for comment.

The hippo is now at a local center for wild animals and would be shipped on June 1 to a refuge in Florida that houses other pygmy hippos, the newspaper said.

The animals, found along streams, forests and swamps in West Africa, number between 2,000 to 4,000 in the wild.

Neighbors in Escondido, about 30 miles from San Diego, said they had known about the hippo for years, but had never seen it, the newspaper said.

"I know he used the hippo manure on his garden," said Bill Ritcher. "It can smell pretty dang bad."

I have a 100 pound Akita (Fonzie) and a 60 pound border collie (Archie).

They are both in great shape and get off leash twice a day to run with other dogs, walk in the woods and swim.

My wife will walk the Akita down this path in the woods. He'll be off running around, but if a man approaches on the path, the Akita will come and stand between him and my wife until he passes. He's protective, but has never attacked anyone. I suspect he would if my wife or I were actually in danger. He gets along well with other dogs, which is not necessarily common for the Akita.

The BC is a nut job. He can bring you a ball and stare at you for 20 minutes while you hold the ball. Amazing concentration. He lays down like he's going to sleep but usually just lies on his side with his eyes open. He also can stare at you for long periods of time while you're watching TV or reading. Just stare at you. He's a little crazy.

Just like a toothless hick, I love watching my dogs fight (not for real).

The BC was my first dog. I got him from a breeder. The Akita we found. From now on I'll probably get dogs from rescue or from the SPCA. I know too many good dogs that were acquired that way not to do it. If you are getting a dog, I receommend it.

I can't have a dog because of where I live but my parents had a dog that recently passed away :( that was awesome. Rhodesian Ridgeback was the breed. Highly suggest it. Labs of course are awesome too. How can anyone hate dogs? Dogs are #1!

Well glad to see all these dog lovers in the gang!!!

I breed Pit Bulls, and it's a big shame that a few irresponsible owners have put such a bad rap on these dogs... They are great dogs, they can out with you and catch a hundred pound wild hog, and come home and sleep with your kids. My daughter would ride him like a pony for gods sake.. Hee hee they are great companions and to me they are the best breed! :D :thefinger

I posted it here a time ago, you can check out the web site if you like.
